  • Network-based IDS(Intrusion Detection System) gathers network packet data and analyzes them into attack or normal. They raise alarm when possible intrusion happens. But they often output a large amount of low-level of incomplete alert information. Consequently, a large amount of incomplete alert information that can be unmanageable and also be mixed with false alerts can prevent intrusion response systems and security administrator from adequately understanding and analyzing the state of network security, and initiating appropriate response in a timely fashion. So it is important for the security administrator to reduce the redundancy of alerts, integrate and correlate security alerts, construct attack scenarios and present high-level aggregated information. False alarm rate is the ratio between the number of normal connections that are incorrectly misclassified as attacks and the total number of normal connections. In this paper we propose a false alarm classification model to reduce the false alarm rate using classification analysis of data mining techniques. The proposed model can classify the alarms from the intrusion detection systems into false alert or true attack. Our approach is useful to reduce false alerts and to improve the detection rate of network-based intrusion detection systems.

  • Multi-processor system with fast I/O devices improves processing performance and reduces the bottleneck by I/O concentration. In the system, the Performance influenced by shared memory used for exchanging data between processors varies with configuration and utilization. This paper suggests a prediction model for buffer and shared memory optimization under interrupt recognition method using mailbox. Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) packets are used as the input of system and the amount of utilized memory is measured for different network bandwidth and burstiness. Some empirical studies show that the amount of buffer and shared memory varies with packet concentration rate as well as I/O bandwidth. And the studies also show the correlation between two memories.

  • Background Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) and deoxycholate (DCA) compound has been recently used for the purpose of partial lipolysis and is valued for its efficacy and lower invasiveness compared to liposuction and dermolipectomy used previously. In this article, the authors discuss the efficacy of the PPC dissolved in DCA via an experimental rat study model, along with suggesting a useful animal experimental model for the study of adipose tissue and lipolysis. Methods Bilateral inguinal fat pads of an experimental rat were elevated with the deep inferior epigastric vessel as the sole vascular pedicle. Normal saline was injected on one side as a control group and a PPC and DCA compound was injected on the other side. After 4 days, the rats were euthanized for microscopic tissue examination. The pathology was scored by a sem-iquantitative system in 4 categories: normal fat amount, fat necrosis, inflammatory activity, and stage of fibrosis. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test powered by SPSS packet program was used for statistical analysis and to determine significance. Results Microscopic examination was performed on the obtained samples, and the experimental data of all four categories showed significant histologic differences compared to the control group. All of the data also showed statistical significance by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (P<0.01). Conclusions In the inguinal fat pad rat model, the control group and the experimental group had a differed significantly in the amount of normal fat tissue, inflammation, necrosis, and fibrosis. We recommend the rat inguinal fat pad model used in this study, as it is likely to be useful in related research.

  • VANET(Vehicular Ad-hoc Network), standardization of IEEE 802.11p specification is in process. 802.11 MAC protocol grants all nodes equal opportunity to acquire channel without regard to their bit-rates, making it possible for lower bit-rate nodes to occupy communication channel for a fair amount of time thus keeping the higher bit-rate nodes from acquiring connection channel which downward-equalize the overall network performance. Also with the 802.11p MAC protocol, the probability of collision occurring increases as the number of nodes grow. The proposed algorithm is a new MAC protocol that guarantees nodes with acquired channel a firm priority over other nodes for a fixed amount of time with TXOP concept added to 'packet burst' according to the current transmitting speed. This newly designed algorithm allows the construction of wireless network with enhanced network throughput, decreased probability of collisions as well as providing the means to grant each node a fair chance of acquiring connection according to their channel conditions. The algorithm sets the CW's (Contention Window) width wider than the standard's and modulates the continuous transmitting threshold value depending on channel acquired time, thus improving the overall performance of the network.

  • In recent years, the demands of multimedia data in wireless sensor networks have been significantly increased for the high-quality environment monitoring applications that utilize sensor nodes. However, since the amount of multimedia data is very large, the network lifetime is significantly reduced due to excessive energy consumption on particular nodes. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose a high efficiency data compression scheme in wireless multimedia sensor networks. The proposed scheme reduces the packet size by a multiple compression technique that consists of primary compression that deletes the lower priority bits considering characteristics of multimedia data and secondary compression based on Chinese Remainder Theorem. To show the superiority of our scheme, we compare it with the existing compression scheme. Our experimental results show that our proposed scheme reduces the amount of transmitted data by about 55% and increases network lifetime by about 16% over the existing scheme on average.

  • The command that game users give should be reflected to the game immediately and should be transferred to several objects at once. Also, all game users who participate in game should keep the same progress situation in Real-Time Strategy game. But it takes a certain amount of time to get the command pass to other users, and it is important issue that many commands are synchronized in a short amount of time on server of RTS game. Therefore we propose a scheme for an efficient synchronization based on event locking method on RTS game in this paper. We design and implement the gaming server applying to our proposed scheme. Also, we show efficiency of our proposed scheme by performance analysis in this paper.

  • Ethernet is the most widely deployed access network protocol around the world. IEEE 802.3az WG released the EEE standard based on LPI mode to improve the energy efficiency of Ethernet. This paper proposes improved adaptive power control mechanism that can enhance energy-efficiency based on EEE from small Ethernet switch. The feature of this mechanism is that it predicts the traffic characteristic of next cycle by measuring the amount of traffic flowing in during certain period and adjusts the optimal threshold value to relevant traffic load. Performance evaluation results indicate that the proposed mechanism improves overall performance compared to traditional mechanism, since it significantly reduces energy consumption rate, even though average packet delay increases a little bit.

  • Ad hoc cognitive radio wireless sensor networks allow secondary wireless sensor nodes to recognize spectrum opportunities and transmit data. Most existing protocols proposed for ad hoc cognitive radio wireless sensor networks require a dedicated common control channel. Allocating one channel just for control packet exchange is a waste of resources for channel-constrained networks. There are very few protocols that do not rely on a common control channel and that exchange channel-negotiation control packets during a pre-allocated time on the data channels. This, however, can require a substantial amount of time to access the channel when an incumbent is present on the channel, where the nodes are intended to negotiate for the data channel. This study examined channel access delay on cognitive radio wireless sensor networks that have no dedicated common control channel.

  • A discontinuous reception (DRX) operation is included in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system to achieve power saving and prolonged battery life of the user equipment. An improvement in DRX power saving usually leads to a potential increase in the packet delay. An optimum DRX configuration depends on the current traffic, which is not easy to estimate accurately, particularly for non-real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a novel way to vary the DRX cycle length, avoiding a continuous estimation of the data traffic when only non-real-time applications are running with no active real-time applications. Because a small delay in non-real-time traffic does not essentially impact the user's experience adversely, we deliberately allow a limited amount of delay in our proposal to attain a significant improvement in power saving. Our proposal also improves the delay in service resumption after a long period of inactivity. We use a stochastic analysis assuming an M/G/1 queue to validate this improvement.

  • Long-Reach PON (LR-PON) is a broadband access network using passive optical network (PON) technology which the reach is extended to 100 km or higher. A major challenge in LR-PON is that the propagation delay between OLT and ONUs is increased by a very significant amount. To effectively and fairly distribute the upstream bandwidth dynamically in LR-PON, we propose a new periodic and multi-thread polling based dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm. We compare the proposed algorithm with traditional DBAs and show its advantage on average packet delay. Numerical results are analyzed under varying offered loads.
