Esophageal pH and Combined Impedance-pH Monitoring in Children

  • Esophageal pH monitoring is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease because of the normal ranges across the pediatric age range. However, this method can only detect acid reflux. Multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring has recently been used for the detection of bolus reflux in infants and children. This method allows for the detection of liquid, gas or mixed reflux in addition to acid, weakly acidic or weakly alkaline reflux. MII-pH monitoring can record the direction of flow and the height of reflux, which are useful parameters to identify an association between symptoms and reflux. However, the technique is limited by its high cost and the lack of normative data of MII-pH in the pediatric population. Despite certain limitations, MII-pH monitoring will become more common and gradually replace pH monitoring in the future, because pH monitoring is part of MII-pH.

나노세공 실리카 분말의 합성과 열적 특성에 관한 연구 (Study on the Synthesis and thermal Characteristics of Nano Porous Silica Powder)

  • Silica hydrogel was synthesized by the reaction of liquid sodium silicate with sulfuric acid. The condensation polymerization of the synthesized hydrogel was carried out via an aging process under the acidic or alkaline conditions. Nano porous silica with the pore size below 3 nm and surface area of $715m^2/g$, was obtained by the above processes in acidic ranges(pH : 3~5). The pore size and surface area of the silica varied with pH, and in alkaline ranges(pH : 8~10), those were 21 nm and $300m^2/g$ respectively. The characteristics of the silica varied with the thermal treatment which caused the change of surface area, pore volume and pore diameter.

  • An Aero-NFT nutriculture system using microcomputer for cultivation of greenhouse melon was developed and the performance of the system was evaluated through experiments. The system could control temperature, EC and pH of the nutrient solution within the error ranges of $\pm$ 0.2$^{\circ}C$, $\pm$ 0.2 mS/cm, $\pm$ 0.1 pH, respectively. The results of cultivation experiment showed that temperature, EC and pH of the nutrient solution were generally controlled within the setting ranges during cultivation period. The growth results were good until pinching, but the fruit quality of melons was not high except sweetness and shape. To optimize performance of the system, more techlical information for nutriculture of greenhouse melon was needed.

들깨종실단백질 중의 phytate 제거에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Removal of Phytate from Korean Perilla (Perilla ocimoides, L.) Protein)

  • pH를 달리한 수용액 및 농도를 달리한 염류수용액에서 들깨종실의 단백질과 phytate의 용해도를 측정하여 단백질로부터 phytate를 제거할 수 있는 조건을 검토하였다. 들깨종실단백질의 용해도는 pH4.0에서 가장 낮은 9.5%로 등전점을 보였고, 그보다 산성 또는 알칼리성쪽으로 갈수록 증가되었다. 반면에 phytate의 용해도는 pH5.0에서 가장 높았으며 그보다 산성 또는 알칼리성쪽으로 갈수록 감소되었다. NaCl 수용액을 처리하였을 때 단백질의 용해도는 pH $3.0{\sim}4.0$ 범위에서 가장 낮았고 pH 6.0 이상에서는 현저히 증가되었다. Phytate의 용해도는 pH$2.0{\sim}5.0$ 범위에서는 약 90%내외로 높았으나 pH6.0 이상에서는 급격히 감소되었다. $Na_2SO_3$ 수용액처리에서는 단백질 용해도가 $pH2.0{\sim}3.0$ 범위에서 가장 낮았고 phytate의 용해도는 $pH5.0{\sim}6.0$에서 최대치를 보였고, 3%의 경우는 전 pH 구간에 걸쳐서 낮았으나 5%와 7%에서는 전 구간에서 높았다. $CaCl_2$ 수용액처리에서는 단백질 용해도가 3% 수용액에서는 전 pH 구간에서 낮았으나 5%와 7%에서는 $pH5.0{\sim}10.0$에서 높은 값을 보였으며 phytate의 용해도는 $pH2.0{\sim}3.0$ 사이에서 최대값을 나타내고 pH4.0이상에서는 급격히 감소하였다. 이상의 결과에서 3% NaCl 용액을 사용하여 pH9.0에서 단백질을 추출하고 pH4.0에서 침전시켰을 때 단백질 수율이 좋고 phytate 잔존량이 가장 적어, 저(低)phytate 분리단백질을 만드는 가장 좋은 조건이었다..

Effects of Soaking pH and Extracting Temperature on the Physicochemical Properties of Chicken Skin Gelatin

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of soaking pH and extraction temperature on the physicochemical properties of chicken skin gelatin. In order to extract gelatin from chicken skin, the chicken skin was soaked at various pH ranges (1-13) and was extracted at 75 and $100^{\circ}C$. For the rate of weight increase, the highest value was obtained from two pH ranges (1-2 and 12-13). In addition, the rate of weight increase was affected by soaking time. The alkali treatments had greater crude protein content as well as total extraction yield compared to the acid process (p<0.05), and the increased extraction temperature resulted in a significant (p<0.05) increase of crude protein content and total extraction yield. All treatments showed ${\alpha}1$ and ${\alpha}2$ chains derived from type I collagen on SDS-PAGE. The pH value and color of gelatin gel (6.67%) were affected by soaking pH and extraction temperature. Chicken skin gelatin gel extracted at $75^{\circ}C$ after soaking at a pH of 2 had the highest melting point (p<0.05) and gel strength among all treatments. Although the chicken skin treated with the alkali process had a higher yield, a lower extraction temperature following the acid process would be better for obtaining superior gelatin from chicken skin.

폐당밀(廢糖蜜)카라멜 색소제조시(色素製造時) 첨가제(添加劑)가 색소(色素)의 성장(性狀)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of catalysts on the Corn Sugar Molasses Caramel color properties)

  • 폐당밀(廢糖蜜)을 정제(精製)하여 caramel 색소(色素)를 제조(製造)할 목적(目的)으로 탄산암모늄, glycine 및 lysine과 같은 촉매(觸媒)를 사용(使用)하여 각(各) pH별로 caramel 화(化)시켰을 때의 제품(製品)의 성상(性狀)을 실험(實驗)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같았다. 탄산암모늄을 촉매(觸媒)로 첨가(添加)했을 때 산성(酸性)보다는 알칼리성(性)에서 색력(色力)이 강(强)하였고, 그 중에서도 pH 9에서 0.6%를 첨가(添加)했을 때 색력(色力)이 0.396으로 가장 강(强)하였다. 색조(色調)에 있어서는 표준색조(標準色調)와 비교(比較)하여 보면 pH 3에서 6까지는 황색대(黃色帶)는 비슷하나, 적색대(赤色帶)는 약(弱)하였다. 그리고 pH 8에서 10 사이에서는 황색대(黃色帶)는 약(弱)하나, 적색대(赤色帶)는 비슷한 경향(傾向)을 나타내었다. 청색대(靑色帶)는 pH 2에서 pH 10까지 모두 표준색조(標準色調)보다 $1.2{\sim}2.5$배(倍) 정도 강(强)하였다. 내(耐)탄닌성(性), 내식염성(耐食鹽性), 내(耐)알코올은 모두 안정(安定)하였으며 내산성(耐酸性)은 pH 9. pH 10에서 다소(多少) 불안정(不安定)하였다. glycine을 촉매(觸媒)로 첨가(添加)한 경우에 있어서는 pH 9에서 0.8%를 첨가(添加)했을 때 색력(色力)이 0.285로 가장 강(强)하였고, 색조(色調)에 있어서 전체적(全體的)으로 황색대(黃色帶)는 약(弱)하고, 적색대(赤色帶)는 약간 강(强)하였으며 청색대(靑色帶)는 표준색대(標準色帶)보다 $1.2{\sim}2.5$배(倍) 정도 강(强)하였다. 내산성(耐酸性), 내(耐)탄닌성(性), 내식염(耐食鹽) 및 내(耐)알코올성(性)은 모두 안정(安定)하였다. lysine을 촉매(觸媒)로 첨가(添加)한 경우, pH 9에서 0.4% 첨가(添加)했을 때 색력(色力)을 0.249로서 가장 강(强)하였다. 색조(色調)에 있어서는 황색대(黃色帶)와 적색대(赤色帶)는 표준색조(標準色調)와 거의 비슷한 경향(傾向)을 나타내고 있으며, 청색대(靑色帶)는 표준색조(標準色調)의 $1.2{\sim}2.5$배(倍) 정도(程度) 강(强)하였다. 그리고 내산성(耐酸性), 내(耐)탄닌성(性), 내식염성(耐食鹽性) 및 내(耐)알코올성(性)은 모두 안정(安定)하였다.

알칼리 추출법에 의한 탈지 미강 단백질 추출의 최적 pH 조건 (Optimum pH Condition of Defatted Rice Protein Extraction by Alkaline Method)

  • 알칼리를 이용하여 탈지미강에서 단백질을 추출하기 위해 용출 pH(8, 9, 10, 11, 12) 5개 구간과 등전점 침전 pH(2, 4, 6) 3개 구간을 설정하고 각 pH 구간에서의 회수된 단백질 함량과 갈변, 전기영동 패턴 및 최종 수용성 단백질의 회수율을 비교 확인하였다. 용출 pH가 증가할수록 수용성 단백질의 회수율은 증가하였으나 동시에 갈변현상도 증가하였다. 등전점 침전 pH는 4에서 가장 많은 단백질을 회수할 수 있었다. SDS-PAGE 결과, 사용한 pH에 따라 추출된 단백질의 주요 패턴은 뚜렷한 차이가 없었으나, 높은 알칼리조건이 35 kDa 이하의 단백질 추출에 좀 더 용이하였다. 각 pH 구간별 용출 대비 수용성 단백질 회수율은 평균 31.5% 이었다. 용출 pH 11 및 침전 pH 4 구간에서 46.95%의 가장 높은 회수율을 나타냈으나 갈변이 급격히 증가하였다. 따라서 37.65%의 회수율을 나타낸 용출 pH 10 과 침전 pH 4 구간이 미강 단백질의 최적 추출조건임을 확인하였다.

Hypochlorite treatment of polyamide membrane for improved reverse osmosis performance

  • The pH-dependent inter-conversion of the three free chlorine species ($Cl_2$, HOCl, OCl-) present in the aqueous hypochlorite solution was theoretically investigated. Each species was found overwhelmingly present in a characteristic pH range. Hypochlorite treatment of the polyamide membrane was carried out over these pH ranges and various membrane responses were observed. As pH is less than 8, membrane tends to be N-chlorinated by $Cl_2$ and HOCl, and N-chlorinated membrane showed reduced water permeance and salt rejection. As pH rises to 10-12, $OCl^-$ appears to be the dominating chlorine species. Membrane hydrolysis was found to well interpret the improved water permeance and salt rejection. When the pH is between 8-10, both N-chlorination and hydrolysis contribute to the response of the membrane, and the treated membrane showed improved salt rejection but reduced water permeation. Excessive hydrolysis occurred while the membrane was treated at pH 13 for the much stronger alkalinity.

Kinetic and Molecular Orbital Stuides on the Reaction of 5-nitrofurfural Hydrazone Formation

  • Kinetic measurements of the 5-nitrofurfural-hydrazine reaction in various pH ranges of aquous solution were carried out by ultraviolet spectrophotometry at $25^{\circ},\;35^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}C$. The observed rate of the reaction varies with the change in pH, which gives characteristic "bell-type" rate acidity profile. The maximum rate is shown in the vicinity of pH 4. This reaction procceds with rate-determining attack of hydrazine on the 5-nitrofurfural at low pH and undergoes a change in rate-determining step to dehydration of the addition intermediate as pH increases. The reaction has a "reactant-like transition state" which precedes intermediate in low pH and "product-like transition state" which follows it in neutral pH. The geometry of 5-nitrofurfural-hydrazine intermediate was estimated with PCILO method associated with CNDO/2 scheme.

Characterization of Chitinase in Oak Tissues and Changes in Its Activity Related to Water Stress and Inoculation with Hypoxylon atropunctatum

  • Chitinase activities from Shumard oak tissues were determined to study changes in chitinase activities related to water stress. The enzyme extracted in sodium acetate buffer (0.1M, pH 4.5) was assayed by a colorimetric method. In addition, the fungal hyphae of Hypoxylon atropunctatum in xylem tissues of oak were observed through scanning electron microscopy. The enzyme in oak tissues was mainly endochitinase, and optimum pH for enzyme activity was 5. Specific chitinase activities from both of stems held under high relative humidity (ranges of 0.63-1.11 pKatal/$\mu\textrm{g}$ of protein) and stems held under low relative humidity (ranges of 0.41-0.99 pKatal/$\mu\textrm{g}$ of protein) were significantly increased following fungal inoculation with H. atropunctatum. However, there was no significant difference in chitinase activities between tissues held under high and low humidities, which might be due to fungal chitinase. Scanning electron microscopy showed holes in fungal hyphae in the xylem tissues of stems held under high humidity but not in the stems held under ow humidity, suggesting that hyphae might be hydrolyzed by plant hydolases such as chitinase.
