  • The objective of this study was to investigate the proper operation conditions of fenton oxidation such as initial pH, $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ ratio, $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ dosage amount, and neutralizing agent for pretreatment of the livestock wastewater. Fenton oxidation reagents were reacted with the livestock wastewater for 2 hours at 120 rpm and the settling was performed for 2 hours using jar-tester apparatus under the different experimental conditions. And then the supernatant was sampled and measured for the residual $H_2O_2$, $COD_{Cr}$, and SS. The results are as follows; optimum initial pH=4, optimum $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ ratio=10:1, optimum $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ dosage amount=5,000/500 mg/L and $Ca(OH)_2$ as proper neutralizing agent. The removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ and SS were 43% and 84% under those optimal fenton oxidation conditions.

  • In order to develop an intelligent delivery system for cosmetic active agents (e.g., arbutin, ascorbic acid, and adenosine), pH-responsive P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles having an average size of approx. $2{\mu}m$ and spherical shape were synthesized via dispersion photopolymerization. There was a drastic change in the swelling ratio of P (MAA-co-PEGMA) hydro gels at a pH 5, which is the $pK_a$ of the hydrogel. To determine the factors that have an effect on the loading of cosmetic active agents into the hydrogel, the loading efficiency of the active agents was investigated at various MAA and EG compositions of the hydrogel and the loading pH conditions. When the MAA contents in the hydrogel decreased, the loading efficiency of the active agents increased. In loading experiments with different pH conditions, the active agents showed higher loading efficiency into the hydrogel at the pH where the hydrogel was at the swollen state than at the pH where the electrostatic repulsion was minimized.

  • Chemical and photochemical processes during storage and preparation rapidly degrade retinol, the most active form of vitamin A. therefore, the efficacy of incorporation into liposomes in order to modulate the kinetics of retinol degradation was investigated. Retinol was readily incorporated into multilamellar liposomes that were prepared form soybean phosphatidylcholine; the extent of the incorporation was 98.14±0.93% at pH 9.0 at a ratio of 0.01 : 1 (wt:wt) retinol : phospholipid. It was only marginally lower at higher retinol concentrations. The pH of the hydration buffer had a small effect. The incorporation efficiency ranged from 99.25±0.47% at pH 3 to 97.45±1.13% at pH 11. The time course of the retinol degradation in the aqueous solution in liposomes was compared to that of free retinol and free retinol with α-tocopherol under a variety of conditions of pH(3, 7, and 11), temperature(4, 25, 37, and 50℃), and light exposure(dark, visible, and UV). The retinol that was incorporated into the liposomes degraded significantly slower than the free retinol or retinol with α-tocopherol at pH 7 and 11. At pH 3, where the free retinol degrades rapidly, the degradation kinetics were similar in liposomes and the presence of α-tocopherol. At pH 7.0 and 4℃ in the light, for example, free aqueous retinol was completely degraded within 2 days, while only 20% of the retinol in the liposomes were degraded after 8 days. In general, the protective effect of the liposome incorporation was greater at low temperatures, at neutral and high pH, and in the dark. The results suggest that protection is greater in the solid, gel phase than in the fluid liquid crystalline phase lipids. These results indicate that the incorporation into liposomes can extend the shelf-life of retinol under a variety of conditions of temperature, pH, and ambient light conditions.

  • This study was carried out to optimize the concentration of Ca2+ and pH of fusion medium which affected electrofusion frequency of protoplasts isolated from Nicotiana tabacum L. (cv. BY4) mesophyll cells and callus. The protoplasts were electrofused in the fusion media containing two different Ca2+ concentrations and three different pH regions. Fusion frequency was lower in the fusion medium containing only 13% mannitol as osmotic stabilizer. However, higher degree of fusion frequency (47.3%) was observed in the fusion medium containing 50mM CaCl2 at pH 10.5 than any other conditions. Cell viability was decreased by Ca2+ and high pH treatment in the fusion media, while fusion frequency was increased. It is concluded that Ca2+ is involved in electrofusion of protoplasts.

  • The effects of important parameters such as reaction time and pH on the Fenton's process were evaluated using a batch reactor. It was proven that organic materials and heavy metals in leachate could be successfully removed by Fenton's reagent. Favorable operation conditions were investigated. It was observed that the reaction between ferrous iron and hydrogen peroxide with the production of hydroxyl radical was almost complete in 10 minutes. That is, the oxidation of organic materials by Fenton's reagent was so fast that it was complete in 30 minutes with batch experiments. With the formation of carbonic acid, pH of the batch reactor decreased to favorable acidic conditions without acid addition. The oxidation of organic materials in the leachate showed a pH dependence and was most efficient in the pH range of 2-3.

  • Mulberry leaves containing 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) have been recognized as a potentially important source for prevent or treat hyperglycemia. However, DNJ content of natural mulberry leaf are as low as 0.1%. Thus, the most effective method for increasing ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity with the DNJ high-production is needed. In this study, we investigated the influence of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity according to different pH values (6-9) and inoculation amounts (0.1-0.5%) when Bacillus subtilis cultured on mulberry leaf powder media. We confirmed that ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity was difference according to culture conditions of different pH values, inoculation amounts, and fermentation times. The results of mulberry leaf fermentation according to pH values and inoculation amounts were shown that the optimal conditions for ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity were defined as pH 7 and 9, inoculation amount 0.4%, and incubation until 2 to 4 days. These results can be provided a basic data for the optimal culture conditions increasing ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity from mulberry leaf fermentation.

  • An anaerobic acidogenic fermentation experiment was carried out in order to investigate the distribution of volatile acid products and gas generations with varing temperatures and pH values. The experiment was carried out using $1\%$ glucose as substrate and a pair of 3.5 liter vessle as bench scale batch reactors. The reactors were operated for 7 days at 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$ and at pH values of 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0 at each temperature conditions. Major products at all experiment pH's at $35^{\circ}C$ were acetic acids and butyric acids which together composed around $90^{\circ}F$ of total product acids. At higher pH values at $35^{\circ}C$, propionic acid reached around $10\%$. At all experiment conditions, 52 to $55\%$ of generated gases comprised of hydrogen gas and 45 to $48\%$ of carbon dioxide. With temperature increase from 25 to $35^{\circ}C$, the production rate of acetic acid increased 2.9 fold, butyric acid 22 fold, hydrogen gas 2.0 fold and carbon dioxide gas 2.3 fold. Optimum reaction conditions for highest production of acetic acid and hydrogen gas was determined to be pH 5.5 at $35^{\circ}C$.

  • Coagulation can be used for pretreatment of NF membrane filtration. Foulants such as organic matter and particulate can be removed effectively with the process while high flux recovery is maintained. Recently various types of polyaluminium coagulants including polyaluminium chloride(PAC) are commercially available for water treatment. This study examines effects of polymeric Al and hydrolysis products of PAC on nanofiltration membrane performance. Dominant hydrolysis products were polymeric Al, $Al(OH)_3$, and ${Al(OH)_4}^{-1}$ at acidic, neutral, and alkaline pH conditions, respectively. Under acidic pH condition, flux decline was increased with increasing PAC concentrations, possibly due to polymeric Al adsorption on membrane pore and/or surfaces. For neutral and alkaline pH conditions, little flux decline was observed with increasing PAC concentrations except the highest ${Al(OH)_4}^{-1}$ concentration, with which rapid flux decline was shown. Removal of ionic matters was also varied with pH conditions in this study. Especially, conductivity removal was substantially low and $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the permeate was quite high at neutral pH condition.

  • Biohydrogen production from food waste via dark fermentation was conducted by using mixed culture under various environmental conditions (initial pH, initial F/M ratio, initial ferrous iron ($Fe^{2+}$), and temperature condition) in batch reactor. The results revealed that the maximum hydrogen yield of $46.19mL\;H_2/g\;COD_{add}$ was achieved at the optimal conditions (initial pH 8.0, initial F/M ratio 4.0, initial iron concentration 100 mg $FeSO_4/L$ and thermophilic condition ($55{\pm}1^{\circ}C$)). Furthermore, major volatile fatty acid (VFA) productions of butyrate (765.66 mg/L) and acetate (324.69 mg/L) were detected and COD removal efficiency was detected at 66.00%. Therefore, these optimal conditions could be recommended to operate a system.

  • The effects of various bath conditions such as surfactant concentration, bath pH, bath temperature, agitation of bath; as well as pulse parameters such as cathodic current density, pulse duty cycle and frequency, on the grain size, surface finish, and appearance of the tin plated coatings have been investigated. The plating bath under investigation is an aqueous acidic solution composed of a mixture of $SnSO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, and a surfactant. The bath conductivity and pH are measured by a glass pH electrode. The microstructure of the coatings produced is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and surface profilometry. XRD analysis shows that the deposits consist of tetragonal ${\beta}$-Sn crystal structure irrespective of plating conditions. The mechanism involved in the morphology evolution in response to various parameters and conditions has also been discussed.
