Tree Ring Ca/Al as an Indicator of Historical Soil Acidification of Pinus Densiflora Forest in Southern Korea

  • BACKGROUND: Soil acidification, which is known to be one of the reasons of forest decline, is associated with decreases in exchangeable Ca and increases in Al concentration, leading to low Ca/Al ratio in soil solution. As tree rings are datable archives of environmental changes, Ca/Al ratios of annual growth ring may show decreasing pattern in accordance with the progress of soil acidification. This study was conducted to investigate Ca/Al pattern of Pinus densiflora tree ring in an attempt to test its usefulness as an indicator of historical soil acidification. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three P. densiflora tree disks were collected from P. densiflora forests in Jeonnam province, and soil samples (0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm in depth) were also collected from the tree locations. Soils were analyzed for pH and exchangeable Ca and Al concentrations, and Ca/Al was calculated. Annual growth rings formed between 1969 and 2007 were separated and analyzed for Ca/Al. Soil Ca/Al was positively (P<0.01) correlated with soil pH, suggesting that soil acidification decreased Ca while increasing Al availability, lowering Ca/Al in soil solution. The Ca/Al of tree rings also showed a decreasing pattern from 18.2 to 5.5 during the period, and this seemed to reflect historical acidification of the soils. CONCLUSION(s): The relationship between soil pH and Ca/Al and the decreasing pattern of Ca/Al of tree ring suggest that Ca/Al of tree ring needs to be considered as a proxy of the progress of soil acidification in P. densiflora forest in southern Korea.

  • There are a number of methods to evaluate the quality of squid. However, when purchasing the fish, consumers and retails rely only on the sensory test and flavor in the field. Therefore, this study was aimed to prove relationship between scientific indicator and sensory test. Total viable cell count (TVC), viable cell count of Pseudomonas spp., pH and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) were selected as scientific indicators and mesured during the storage of squid at different temperature. The squid was storaged at 3 different temperature (5℃, 15℃, 20℃). Off flavor determination time was measured by R-index, and kinetic modeling was conducted. Activation energies of off-flavor determination time, TVC, Pseudomonas spp, VBN, and pH were 51.210 kJ/mol, 42.88 kJ/mol, 50.283 kJ/mol, 72.594 kJ/mol and 41.99 kJ/mol respectively. Activation energy of off-flavor determination time was approximated to viable cell count of Pseudomonas spp., TVC, pH and VBN as an order. Especially, viable cell count of Pseudomonas spp. had best match of the activation energy. Therefore, it was judged that indicator of off-flavor determine time was viable cell count of Pseudomonas spp..

Total Organic Carbon Analysis Chip Based on Photocatalytic Reaction (광촉매 반응을 이용한 총유기탄소 분석 칩)

  • Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis equipment, which was previously used to prevent eutrophication in advance, is heavy, bulky, and expensive; therefore, so it is difficult to be carried and has been used as an experimental unit. In this study, a through-carbon analysis chip that integrates pretreatment through photocatalytic oxidation and carbon dioxide measurement using a pH indicator was investigated. Both the total carbon - inorganic carbon method and the nonpurgeable organic carbon (NPOC) measurement method require an acidification part for injecting an acid solution for inorganic carbon measurement and removal, an oxidation part for total carbon or NPOC oxidation and a measurement part for Carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement. Among them, the measurement of oxidation and CO2 requires physical technology. The proposed TOC analysis chip decomposed into CO2 as a result of the oxidizing of organic carbon using a photocatalyst, and the pH indicator that was changed by the generated CO2 was optically measured. Although the area of the sample of the oxidation part and the pH indicator of the measurement part were distinguished in an enclosed space, CO2 was quantified by producing an oxidation part and a measurement part that shared the same air in one chip. The proposed TOC analysis chip is less expensive and smaller, cost and size are disadvantages of existing organic carbon analysis equipment, because it does not require a separate carrier gas to transport the CO2 gas in the oxidation part to the measurement part.

A Study on Indicator Bacteria for Water Quality Management of Urban Artificial Lakes (도심지역 인공호의 수질관리를 위한 지표세균에 관한 연구)

  • Distribution of fecal pollution indicator bacteria and environmental parameter were investigated of urban artificial lakes. An average concentration of temperature, pH, SS, DO, $COD_{Mn}$, T-P, T-N, Turbidity, Chl-a were $21.5^{\circ}C$, 8.07, 116.70 mg/l, 8.66 mg/l, 2.24 mg/1, 0.52 mg/l, 1.71mg/l, 80.54 NTU, and 52.12 mg/l respectively. From the results of bivariate correlation analysis, fecal contamination indicator bacteria were found to be mutually correlated. And turbidity and suspended solid were correlated. From the results of principal component analysis, four factors were extracted. And four factors of variance explained up to 81.5 percentage. Factor 1 was pollution pattern by fecal contamination, factor 2 was physical pollution pattern by pollution source, factor 3 was natural pollution by precipitation, and factor 4 was artificial pollution pattern by organism.

Effect of Acid Rain on Vegetation (산성(酸性)비가 식생(植生)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • In this paper, the current knowledge on the formation of acid rain and its effect on vegetation are reviewed. The pollutants which were emitted into the air are oxidized by photochemical reaction and affect the vegetation by dry and wet deposition. Acid rain at pH 4.0 affected sensitive plants and when it was below pH 3.0, visible symptoms developed in most of the crops. The acid rain treatment at pH 2.0 decreased dry weight, leaf area and chlorophyll contents in soybean but it increased rate of photosynthesis and respiration rate. Rain treatment at pH 2.8 increased ethylene production, but it’s not a suitable indicator of sensitivity to acid rain. At pH 2.0 treatment, the contents of soluble Mn and Al were increased but the cultivated soil pH at upper layer(0-5cm) was significantly decreased. The pertubation of glandular trichome which is existed along the vein was developed at all treatment except the control(pH 6.0) and non-treatment. Histological pertubation of spiked trichome and disintegration of chloroplast were developed only on the leaves of sesame treated with SAR(simulated acid rain) of pH 2.0.

Soil Acidification and Soil Buffer Capacity Change in Urban Forests of Seoul Area (서울지역(地域) 도시림(都市林) 토양(土壤)의 산성화(酸性化)와 완충능력(緩衝能力) 변화(變化))

  • Soil pH change is an important factor which determines soil chemical properties. It is an indicator of the effect of urban environmental pollution on soils and plant growth. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of air pollution on the soil of Seoul urban forests during the course of the air pollution being dipersed toward suburb area. Study sites were divided into four sections of concentric circles with 5km interval. Soil samples were collected from A and B horizons in the urban forests, and analyzed for soil pH, soil buffer capacity, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation. Soil pH ranged from 3.96 to 5.08 for A horizon and from 4.10 to 5.25 for B horizon, which were not significantly different among the sections. However, there was a trend of soil pH lowered at the sections close to the urban center. Soil buffer capacity was lower at 0-5km and 5-10km sections compared to that at the outer sections. Cation exchange capacity and base saturation were not different significantly among the sections. Following the pattern of air pollutants being dispersed from urban center to suburb, soil acidification was observed at the urban forests in Seoul area. Low level of soil buffer capacity toward the urban center was an indicator of soil acidification at the urban forests.

  • Alkalinity is one of the basic variables, which determine geochemical characteristics of natural waters and participate in processes changing concentrations of various contaminants either directly or indirectly. However, not a few laboratories and researchers of Korea still use alkalinity-measurement methods not appropriate for groundwaters, and which becomes one of the major reasons for the poor ion balance errors of the geochemical analysis. This study was performed to review alkalinity-measurement methods, to discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and, thus, to help researchers and analytical specialists in analyzing alkalinity of groundwaters. The pH-titration-curve-inflection-point (PTC-IP) methods, which finds the alkalinity end point from the inflection point of the pH titration curve are revealed to be most accurate. Gran titration technique among them are likely to be most appropriate for accurate estimation of titrant volume to the end point. In contrast, other titration methods such as pH indicator method and pre-selected pH method, which are still commonly being used, are likely to cause erroneous results especially for groundwaters of low ionic strength and alkalinity.

Impact of Water Quality Parameters on the Disinfection of Total Coliform with Chlorine Dioxide

  • This study investigated the inactivation of the total coliform, an indicator organism in chlorine dioxide, in order to assess the optimal disinfection procedure for drinking water treatment and distribution systems. This research focus on a number of factors, including the dosage of disinfectant, contact time, pH, temperature and DOC. Water samples were taken from the outlet of a settling basin at a conventional surface water treatment system. As the pH increased in the range of pH 6-9, the bactericidal effects of disinfectants decreased. Changes in levels of pH did not significantly after the disinfection effect of chlorine dioxide for total coliform. With an increase in temperature, there was a subsequent increase in the bactericidal effects of disinfectants. Thus, it is evident that a decrease in temperature will higher the CT values required to inactivate coliform for during the winter. DOC addition can also reduce total coliform inactivation. DOC is the most significant variable in total coliform inactivation with chlorine dioxide.

A Study on Yeast and Mold Contamination of Fermented Milk Products in Korea (우리나라 유산균 제품의 Yeast, Mold 오염에 관한 조사연구)

  • This Study was carried out to investigate yeast and mold contamination in fermented milk products produced by 9 different domestic manufacturers from October 20. to December 5. 1980 The results obtained in the study were as follows 1) pH values of the products were ranged from pH 3.14 to pH 4.20 and average of sour milk drinks was pH $3.66\pm 0.19$ and fermented milks pH $3.74\pm 0.11$. Therefore the difference of pH average among sour milk drinks and fermented milks was statistically significant. (p<0.01) 2) In case of yeast contamination, yeast was found on all the four producted at the same date. From this result, it seemed that yeast contamination occured during the manufacturing progress. 3) Degree of contamination by the indicator organisms was E. coli positive, 3.7%: over 1,000 yeasts/ml, 14.8% over 10 molds/ml, 0.9%. 4) In the range of over 1,000 yeasts/ml, degree of contamination by yeast was 8.4% in fermented milk and 16.7% in sour milk drink. 5) Yeasts in product C increased to the spoilage number within 5 days and in H increased within 10 days at 5C. At 15$\circ$C, yeast increased to the spoilage number within 15 days in product A.D. 6) It seems that the yeast number of initial contamination should be important than the increase rate as criteria on the fermented Milk products.
