  • The pH of recycled aggregate is over 12 because of high alkalinity of cement. This high alkalinity give circumstance harmful effect. The high alkalinity of recycled aggregate can appear variously according to aggregate properties, elution time of alkalinity, aggregate size, and so on. This study analyzed recycled aggregate properties according to wet and dry type manufacture process; different test methods: waste official test, soil contamination official test, BS EN 1744-3 standard; elution time and different size to test effects of various condition. These test results can contribute to solving environmental problems by recycled aggregate. In the test results, pH of recycled aggregate was as higher as smaller particle size and as time elapsed. There was no difference between dry and wet type recycled aggregate except for difference according to elapsed time. Waste official test method got the highest pH value between pH test methods. So unified pH test method need to test recycled aggregate pH.

  • In general, the pH measurement follows calibration of glass electrode system using pH standard solution. When pH is measured at constant temperature, uncertainty factors are mainly related to the accuracy of pH standard solution and the accuracy and precision of glass electrode. Participants in this proficiency test were the volunteers trying to know the distribution of the measured pH values for the same sample and the sources of error through 1998 and 1999. The samples for proficiency test are phosphate salt standard solutions specially prepared in KRISS, of which pH values were 6.860, 7.415(at $25^{\circ}C$), and the stability test was performed for the same periods of proficiency test. The results of the proficiency test were plotted according to Youden plot, which shows whether the error is random or systematic. The results of Youden plot showed that the source of error was from the systematic effect of laboratories in each year. This shows that the source of error is the standard solutions used in laboratories.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of feeding illite(yellow soil component) on meat quality of pork. 40 pigs were fed with commercial formulated feed (control group) and 1% illite added feed(treatment group). Pigs grown up to 100~110kg of weight were slaughtered in commercial abattoir. After chilling for 24hours, samples were collected from M. longissimus dorsi muscle, and stored at $4\pm$$1^{\circ}C$ for analyses. The physico-chemical properties was determined during storage days as follows. Ultimate pH was not significantly different between control and treatment(pH 5.58 and 5.60, respectively). Water-holding capacity measured using filter paper press method of the treatment group was slightly higher than that of the control group. Cooking loss of treatment group were significantly lower than that of the control group at 1 and 7 days(p〈0.05). Shear force between control and treatment group was not different. L*- and a*-value were not significantly different between the two groups(p〉0.05), but b*-value of treatment group was lower than that of the control group(p〈0.05). The drip loss of all samples was increased with storage days, and that of the treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control at 1 and 3 day storage. Meat color measured using NPPC pork quality standards was not significantly different between the two groups(p〉0.05), but marbling content of the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control group(p〈0.05). Sensory characteristics of, flavor taste and tenderness did not show significant differences(p〉0.05), but juiciness of the treatment group showed higher value than that of the control group(p〈0.05)

  • The artificial rain (pH 4.0, pH 5.6 and pH 6.85) and weathering simulation test are applied in dolomitic marble for the prediction of deterioration of the stone monuments constructed with carbonate rock by acid rain. pH of the applied rain all increase to about neutral pH after reaction of marble. The contents of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ have increased more than twofold in two acid rain and deionized neutral rain after reaction of marble. The weight of marble is expected to decrease $0.00037kg/m^2$ each test cycle by pH 4.0 rain. This weight reduction rate of marble is 1.4 and 3.1 times more in pH 5.6 and pH 6.85 rain respectively, and 3.7 times more in only artificial weathering test. The compressive strength of marble is expected to decrease 0.2468, 0.1791 and $0.1280kg/m^2$ per test cycle with pH 4.0, pH 5.6 and pH 6.85 rain, respectively. These results mean that more acidic rain more enfeeble the strength of marble. Dolomite and small amount of calcite are precipitated in the rains after reaction of marble.

  • Experiments were carried out to study the effectiveness of METAP as a slow released fertilizer on the growth, grain yield and its components of paddy rice, and to compare its effects with those of single fertilizers in the fields of 3 Crop Experiment Stations and 7 provincial Offices of Rural Development. The effectiveness of METAP seems to be different according to the physical and chemical characteristics of soil, the time of application, climatic conditions, variety and cultural methods. Therefore, the experimental results obtained from the above experiment are summurized as follows: 1. When METAP was applied into sandy soil, grain yield was increased due to increase of the number of panicles, and split application of METAP was more effective than basal only. However, in the reclaimed soil, not heavily percolated soil and fertile soil, no differences were observed between MET AP and single fertilizer applied plot. 2. When a rice variety, 'TONGIL' which is sensitive to the low temperature and produce higher yield in the early transplanting, was not transplanted early and air temperature is relatively lower during the ripening stage, the percentage of ripened grains and 1,000 grains weight were not higher in the METAP applied plots than in the single fertilizer applied plots.

  • Various leaching tests were applied to the soil affected by accidental leakage of HF in an industrial area in Korea. Three different leaching methods including pH-stat, continuous batch leaching, and column tests were adopted to assess leaching characteristics and mobility of fluorine(F) in soil and the potential risks to ecosystem. Both natural and spiked samples were used for the leaching tests. F concentrations in the batch tests increased by leaching rapidly in the early stage of leaching and then maintained rather constant levels. Column leaching test also show similar result to that of the batch test. pH also controlled the leaching behavior of the soil. With increasing pH, more F was released in the pH-stat test. This is mainly due to the competition and exchange with hydroxyl ions, as pH increase to the alkaline range. Most of the F released by the accident seem to have removed in the very early stage of leaching, whereas some natural proportion from soil minerals are thought to have been released very slowly. Therefore, little F released during the accident remained, based on the results of this study on the samples after two years of the accident. We could conclude that soil contaminated by external effects such as chemical accidents should be managed immediately, especially with F.

  • This study examines the characteristics of mortar mixed with various boron compounds. The adapted boron compounds, classified into acid, slightly alkaline and strongly alkaline with respect to the value of the pH are acid-based boron (AA), low-alkaline-based boron (AB), and high-alkaline-based boron (HB). The pH test, setting test and compressive strength test are performed to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of mortar, and SEM imaging is conducted to analyze the microstructure of mortar. The measured pH shows that the specimens mixed with boron compounds have lower pH than the basic mortar without boron and that loss of pH occurs according to time. The setting test reveals that the initial and final setting times of the specimens mixed with boron compounds occur later than the basic mortar, which disagrees slightly with the previous literature stating that the setting time can be shortened according to the alkalinity. From the compressive strength test and SEM imaging results, it is recommended to determine the optimal content of boron considering type and composition of the boron compounds.

  • Calcium powder from whey (WCF) was added to enrich the calcium content of kimchi, and the mixing ratios of it to salted Chinese cabbage were 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%. Quality characteristics of kimchi such as pH, titratable acidity, reducing sugar content and microbial loads were measured during fermentation at 10$^{\circ}C$. Kimchi samples with WCF showed a higher level in pH and titratable acidity than that of control during fermentation. Kimchi having higher WCF maintained a higher in pH and titratable acidity, and titratable acidity was above 1.0% about 12 days in kimchi sample with 0.5% WCF. Reducing sugar content was steadily decrease after 5 days, and control maintained a higher than others. Microbial load was similar until 10 days, but control was lower than kimchi samples with WCF. Based on the titratable acidity, kimchi with WCF had a limitation in shelf life.

  • This study is performed to examine the ground reinforcement effect and the environmental impact of LW injection, which is widely used during the excavation of high-rise apartment buildings. In addition, it proved that by conducting field exploration and laboratory test the engineering ground reinforcement effect of LW injection in the ground has low coefficient of permeability. The environmentally friendly aspect was evaluated through an assessment of environmental impact. The results of laboratory test shows that LW coagulating material with SC type soil structure has significant improvement of uniaxial compressive strength, increasing by three times and the shear strength increasing by twice, coefficient of permeability decreasing six to seven times. And the result of environmental impact tests show that from 6 hour after where the pH increases until 7.96 to initially it diminished, it started and to 80 hour after it recovered a pH 7.25 initially with 7.30. The chemical composition analysis test result that unpolluted water and polluted water hydrogen ion concentration (pH) show that the unpolluted water pH 7.36, polluted water pH 7.85, which is inside the Ministry of Environment standard of drinking water (the pH 5.8~8.5). The assessment of environmental impact and chemical analysis test also demonstrate that the LW coagulating material is environmentally friendly. In the $Cr^{6+}$ and the salinity detection test, it was proven that the salinity is slight and the $Cr^{6+}$ is not detected.

  • In Korea, the production of reclaimed concrete materials has been increased due to the increase in the concrete structures taken down every year. The reclaimed concrete materials have been reused as road materials. However, the studies on their mechanical and environmental properties have been very limited. The recycled rate of the materials is currently low in Korea. This paper presents the investigation of mechanical and environmental properties of the reclaimed concrete materials, as well as the comparisons with those of gravel. For the evaluation of the mechanical and environmental characteristics, following tests were conducted on both reclamed materials and gravel; liquid limit, plasticity index, CBR, sand equivalent test, abrasion test, pH test, and column leaching test. The test results showed that the reclaimed concretes satisfy the requirements for use as roadbase, subbase, and subgrade materials, except base materials. The pH of reclaimed concrete materials was less than 11 and the leaching test results satisfied the regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Based on the investigations, it appears that the reclaimed concrete materials are environmentally safe and applicable for use as road materials.
