  • Ras expression has been suggested as a marker for tumor aggressiveness of breast cancer, including the degrees of invasion and tumor recurrence. We previously showed that p38 MAPK is a key signaling molecule differentially regulated by H-ras and N-ras, leading to H-ras-specific cell invasive and migrative phenotypes in human breast epithelial cells (Cancer Res.: 63, 5454-5461, 2003).(omitted)

  • Hypertrophy and the alteration of renal cell growth have been reported as early abnormality in diabetic nephropathy. However, the effects ot high PKCglucose and its action mechanism in renal proximal tubular cell (PTC) have not been elucidated. High glucose condition increases diacyl glycerol (DAG) and activates protein kinase C (PKC) in renal tubular cells. The PKC activates mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), such as extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 MAPK. (omitted)

  • This study was conducted to select proper soil amendments in order to reduce the occurrence of potato scab and maintaining soil health by applications of dolomitic lime, sulfur, potassium sulfate, shell meal fertilizer, silicate fertilizer, lime nitrogen and ammonium sulfate fertilizer in different pH levels of volcanic ash soil with continuous cultivation of potato. In potassium sulfate-applied plot with a low soil pH, the incidence rate and disease severity of scab were lowest at 84.4% and 28.4%, respectively. Those were lowest among the treatments. Value of potato scab control was 12.3% and marketable yield of potato was highest at 93.2%. In lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a), the incidence rate was low at 38.3%, and control value was 23.8% and marketable yield of potato was high at 66.3%. In relatively higher pH soils, the incidence rate of scab was lowest at 38.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot (60 kg/10a). Value of potato scab control was 23.8%, which was four times higher than that in sulfur-applied plot. Marketable yield of potato was highest at 66.3% in the lime nitrogen-applied plot. In the lime nitrogen plot infected with potato scab pathogen such as S. acidiscabies and S. scabiei were remarkably lower than other soil amendments at 2.5, 5, and 10 g/L concentrations of lime nitrogen using Glucose Yeast Malt (GYM) medium. In conclusion, this study suggests that potassium sulfate application in low pH soil (less than pH 5) and lime nitrogen application in relatively higher pH soil (more than pH 6) before potato seeding might be helpful to reduce the occurrence of potato scab.

  • The ELISA titers to avian pneumovirus (APV) and avian reovirus (ARV) were surveyed to sera of 38 breeder farms (78 blocks, 1,560 hens) in Jeonbuk province during February to October, 2005. In APV, the positive ELISA were detected 36 (94.7%) breeders, 71 (91.0%) blocks, 1,057 (67.8%) hens, and their S/P ratio was 1.940. Regionally, the positivity of 24 breeders farms in the Jeonju, Jeongeup, Namwon, and Jangsu were noted as 100%, whereas 85.7% in Iksan. The positivity to species such as Cobb (20), Ross (13) and Hanhyup-3 (5), all of the breeding farms were detected as positive, 40 (86.9%), 17 (94.4%) and 14 (100.0%) in blocks, 553 (60.1%), 285 (79.2%) and 219 (78.2%) in hens, and their mean S/P ratio were 1.677, 1.769 and 2.254, respectively. The positivity of the breeders vaccinated with ARV, all of the 9 breeder farms (38 blocks) were noted as 100%, but 627 (82.5%) in hens, and its mean S/P ratio was 1.273. Whereas nonvaccinated with ARV were 28 (96.5%) in breeders farms, 38 (95.0%) in blocks, 660 (82.5%) in hens, and the mean S/P ratio was 1.612. In species which were vaccinated with ARV, 11 breeder farms (38 blocks) were noted as 100%, but 82.5% in hens, and their mean S/P ratio were 1.315. Whereas in nonvaccinated with ARV, 25 (92.6%) in farms, 38 (95.0%) in blocks and 660 (82.5%) in hens were positive, and their mean S/P ratio was 1.532.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of baking on the physicochemical and sensory properties of white pan bread with red wine (RW). RW was substituted for water at four levels (0, 19, 38 and 63%). For bread crumb color, lightness decreased with increasing levels of RW, whereas redness and yellowness increased (p<0.05), in proportion to RW levels. Compared to control bread, specific volume of breads added with RW was decreased. The degree of dough raising power decreased significantly depending on the amounts of RW. The hardness of control bread was $87.35g/cm^2$ while the hardness of breads with RW ranged from 85.37 to $94.19g/cm^2$. Hardness, cohesiveness, springiness and gumminess of breads added with RW showed higher scores than the control group. In the sensory evaluation, the highest flavor and taste preference scores were observed in bread containing 38% RW, whereas the lowest score was observed in bread with 63% RW. Accordingly, the quality of bread can be improved by addition of 38% RW substituted for water.

  • Dendropanax morbiferus leaves (DPL) has been used as a medicine since ancient times in various diseases such as inflammation, diabetes, and cancer. In particular, it has been found to have anticancer effects on several types of cancer cells, but the anticancer effect on breast cancer cells SK-BR-3 has not yet been revealed. Therefore, in this study, DPL caused proliferation inhibition in breast cancer cells SK-BR-3 and the anticancer effect by inducing apoptosis was confirmed, through an in vitro experiment. In order to examine the effect of DPL on cell viability, MTT assay was performed to confirm a significant decrease in the concentration of cell viability. DAPI staining was performed to examine the effect of DPL on cellular morphological changes and increase of apoptotic bodies. To supplement this, an increase in the apoptosis rate was also confirmed through flow cytometry after staining with annexin V/PI. Western blot was performed to confirm apoptosis-related proteins. DPL increased the expression of Cleaved-PARP, Bax whereas decreased the expression of Bcl-2. Changes in the expression levels of MAPK pathway proteins p-ERK1/2, p-JNK, and p-p38 were also confirmed, and a significant increase in p-p38 was observed. These results indicated that DPL induced apoptosis, through p-p38 MAPK signal pathway in SK-BR-3 breast cancer cells.

  • The genus Paeonia belongs to the family Paeoniaceae having significant medicinal and ornamental importance. The present investigation was undertaken with an aim to understand phylogenetic relationships of three Paeonia species (P. lactiflora, P. obovata, and P. suffruticosa) that are widely distributed in China, Korea, and Japan, using nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence and to compare the phylogeny results with investigations reported earlier using existed sequences of the same species. The size variation obtained among sequenced nrDNA ITS region was narrow and ranged from 722 to 726 bp. The highest interspecific genetic distance (GD) was found between P. lactiflora and P. suffruticosa or P. obovata. The phylogram obtained using our nrDNA ITS sequences showed non-congruence with previous hypothesis of the phylogeny between section Paeonia and section Moutan of genus Paeonia. This result was supported by the phylogenetic relations showed in the phylogram constructed with existed sequences in NCBI. The present study suggested that P. obovata belonging to section Paeonia was phylogenetically closer to P. suffruticosa representing section Moutan of genus Paeonia than P. lactiflora belonging to section Paeonia. The main reason of the paraphyly of section Paeonia is thought to be nucleotide additivity directly caused by origin hybridization. This study provides more sequence sources of genus Paeonia, and will help for further studies in intraspecies population, and their phylogentic analysis and molecular evolution.

  • In this paper we discuss some interesting properties of (p, q)-special polynomials and derive various relations. We gain some relations between (p, q)-zeta function and (p, q)-special polynomials by considering (p, q)-analogue Euler sum types. In addition, we derive the relationship between (p, q)-polylogarithm function and (p, q)-special polynomials.
