In an effort to prevent the formation of DBPs from disinfection and the microbial regrowth in distribution systems, the ozonation followed by biological filtration process in drinking water treatment train has been recently developed as an alternative process to reduce effectively water-born organic matter as precursor. There are, however, insufficient for the consistent information and data about the relation between ozone dosage based on organic surrogate parameter, TOC or DOC and effect of ozonation on BDOC formation. This study is to review critically for the effect of ozonation on biodegradability on the basis of published technical papers including the output from author's research laboratory. It truned out that : 1. ozonation in the presence of organic matter has a tendancy to increase in BDOC content, 2. the rate of BDOC formation was maximum below 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC of ozone dose, but about maximum content of BDOC was obtainable at the range from 1.5mg $O_3/mg$ DOC to 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, 3. from above 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, the rate of BDOC formation became slow down, 4. from above 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, BDOC formation was quantitatively negligible, In conclusion, it needs further systematic study and research concerned to biodegradability and treatability by ozonation in terms of organic characteristics and experimental conditions because it was hard to find out the consistent experimental data comparable each other that were performed by numbers of research authors.
This study investigates the ozonation kinetics of 2-chlorophenol in wastewater under acidic condition. Intermediates and by-products generated during the process were rigorously identified and quantified. The major by-products are four carboxylic acids: tartaric acid, oxalic acid, maleic acid, and hydroxymalonic acid. The generation of these organic acids is in agreement with theoretical predictions. But hydroxylated compounds are more favorable to produce than their corresponding non-hydroxylated ones. Based on the information concerning the generation of organic acids and other aromatic intermediates, the complete reaction pathways toward mineralization can be proposed and mathematically modeled. The fitted second-order rate constants are in the same order of magnitude with the results from other studies. Using these oxidation pathways and the corresponding kinetic model, by-products generated in ozonation process can be predicted. This can help in optimizing the design and operation of any subsequent treatment processes.
The aim of this study was to optimize the ozonation and ceramic membrane integrated process for greywater reclamation. The integrated process is a repeated sequential process of filtration and backwash with the same ceramic membrane. Also, this study used ozone and oxygen gas for the backwashing process to compare backwashing efficiency. The study results revealed that the optimum filtration and backwash time for the process was 10 minutes each when comparing the filtrate flow and membrane recovery rate. The integrated process was operated at three different operating conditions with i) 10 minutes for filtration and 10 minutes for ozonation, ii) 10 minutes for filtration and 10 minute for oxygen aeration, and iii) continuous filtration without any aeration for synthetic greywater. The integrated process with ozone backwashing could produce 0.55 L/min of filtrate with an average of 18.42% permeability recovery, while the oxygen backwashing produced 0.47 L/min and 6.26%, respectively. And without any backwashing, the integrated process could produce 0.29 L/min. This shows that the ozone backwash process is capable of periodically recovering from membrane fouling. The resistance of the fouled membrane was approximately 34.4% for the process with ozone backwashing, whereas the resistance was restored by 10.8% for the process with oxygen backwashing. Despite the periodical ozone backwashing and chemical cleaning, irreversible fouling gradually increased approximately 3 to 4%. Approximately 97.6% and 15% turbidity and TOC were removed by ceramic membrane filtration, respectively. Therefore, the integrated process with ozonation and ceramic membrane filtration is a potential greywater treatment process.
Microcystin, stable compounds with circular heptapeptides, is presented inside cyanobacterial cell. So far, over 30 types have been known to exist and microcystin-LR, RR among them are the most potent toxin compound. By this reason, a strong oxidant, ozone was used in this study to remove the microcystins produced by cyanobacteria. Removal efficiency of microcystin at M water treatment plant was also evaluated. Microcystin concentration was determined by protein phosphatase inhibition assay. The results showed that dissolved microcystin in raw water detected in the range of 0.011-0.028 ㎍ Microcystin-RR equivalent/l. Above 98% of microcystin was removed through overall treatment system. Therefore, the water treatability of M treatment plant seemed to be excellent. Removal efficiency of microcystin according to unit process varied as characteristics of raw water such as DOC, UV/sub 254/ and turbidity. Removal efficiency of microcystin by ozonation was investigated in laboratory according to contact time and ozone dose. Dissolved microcystin was increased by twice fold according to ozone contact time, but increased by fifth fold according to ozone dose. So, changing of ozone dose more affected microcystin release than changing of ozone contact time. Behavior of microcystin by ozonation was similar to that of DOC, and residual ozone concentration gave influence to removal ratio of microcystin. In conclusion, single ozone treatment wasn't effective on microcystin removal in case of water containing a lot of cells. Therefore, it's more effective to use ozonation process after the removal of cyanobacterial cells in advance.

TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation was attempted to disinfect fungal pathogens causing postharvest spoilage of kiwifruits and to decompose fungicide residuals on kiwifruits. TiO$_2$Photocatalytic ozonation process synergistically degraded organic compound and inhibited conidial germination of the fungal pathogen compared to single treatment of ozonation or photocatalysis. The efficient control of fungal spoilage and degradation of residual fungicide on kiwifruits indicate that TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation is a very attractive method for postharvest disease control of kiwifruits as an alternative to fungicides application.

Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) do not fully remove micropollutants. Enhanced treatment of sewage effluents is being considered or implemented in some countries to minimize the discharge of problematic micropollutants from WWTPs. Representative enhanced sewage treatment technologies for micropollutant removal were reviewed, including their current status of research and development. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as ozonation and UV/H2O2 and adsorption processes using powdered (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) were mainly discussed with focusing on process principles for the micropollutant removal, effect of process operation and water matrix factors, and technical and economic feasibility. Pilot- and full-scale studies have shown that ozonation, PAC, and GAC can achieve significant elimination of various micropollutants at economically feasible costs(0.16-0.29 €/m3). Considering the current status of domestic WWTPs, ozonation and PAC were found to be the most feasible options for the enhanced sewage effluent treatment. Although ozonation and PAC are all mature technologies, a range of technical aspects should be considered for their successful application, such as energy consumption, CO2 emission, byproduct or waste generation, and ease of system construction/operation/maintenance. More feasibility studies considering domestic wastewater characteristics and WWTP conditions are required to apply ozonation or PAC/GAC adsorption process to enhance sewage effluent treatment in Korea.
In this study ozonation of bis(2-chloroethyl) ether (BCEE) in aqueous solution was performed in a laboratory scale batch reacter. The ozonation process of BCEE was carried out by bubbling ozone at the bottom of reactor containing the BCEE solution. Ozonation was almost complete after 80 min with an ozone concentration of $50{\pm}10mg/L$. Ozonation treatment efficiencies of BCEE were evaluated in terms of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Cr}$, and TOC. In the ozonation of BCEE a 62.79% decrease of the $COD_{Cr}$ and a 57.25% decrease of the TOC lead to biodegradable by-products ($BOD_5/COD_{Cr}$ = 0.39). The results of this research show that wastewaters containing non-biodegradable compounds, such as BCEE can be successfully treated by ozonation followed by bio-treatment. The pseudo first-order rate constants of the ozonation was $2.00{\times}10^{-4}sec^{-1}$ and the activation energy was $10.02kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$.
Removal characteristics of volatile organic carbons(VOCs) by ozone oxidation and other processes in the raw water of the 1st Nakdong water treatment plant were investigated. Dichrolomethane, toluene and other 7 compounds were detected in the raw water. With regard to detected 4 compounds in finally treated water, it was found that VOCs could not be removed effectively by traditional water treatment process. Benzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzne were not detected in the raw water but they were detected in the process of treatment. The compound of highest detection frequency was dichloromethane. When the raw water was controlled at pH 7, temperature $20^{\circ}C$, 5 minutes as contact time, 10 minutes as reaction time, the removal rate of THMFP, $KMnO_4$ demand, TOC, $UV_{254nm}$ and $NH_3-N$ were 46.4%, 22%, 19.6%, 31% and 8%, respectively. From estimating the finally treated water qualities in 7 kinds of treatment processes, P-6 process(raw water-chlorination-coagulation-ozonation) was most effective for organics removal and THMs control. Removal efficiencies for $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC by the process which combined preozonation with coagulation was twice better than only preozonation. $NH_3-N$ removal rate was shown as 10% by P-3 process(raw water-coagulation-ozonation), but 83% of $NH_3-N$ was removed by P-4 process(raw water-coagulation-chlorination). It was found that the chlorination is more effective than the ozonation for the NH3-N removal as commonly known.
The performance of ozone contactor in ozone-BAC advanced water treatment process was evaluated by the degree of decomposition of organic matters. The degree was measured by the analyses of $UV_{254}$ absorbance and the concentrations of DOC and BDOC for the sand filtered water and the ozone treated water, respectively. In addition, the ozone concentration in the contactor, required for the maximum BDOC concentration, was selected as the optimum concentration, and the appropriate residential time of ozone treated water in a reservoir was recommended based on the residual ozone concentration in the treated water. The following results were obtained from the pilot scale experiments. By ozonation $UV_{254}$ absorbance was decreased, and BDOC concentration was increased. The change of DOC concentration by ozonation was negligible, but the excess input of ozone resulted in the removal of the small amount of BDOC by complete oxidation. The optimum ozone concentration was 0.58mg $O_3/mg$ DOC. In order to remove residual ozone, 20minutes of the residential time were enough after ozonation.
Humic substances is accounted for for the largest proportion in natural organic matter(NOM) and NOM is widely distributed in varying concentration in all aquatic and soil. They can affect water quality adversely in several ways by contributing undesirable color, complexing with metal and yielding metal concentrations exceeding normal solubility. Ozonation is one of the efficient treatments for degradation of humic substances which cause some problems in water treatment. Especially, the combination of ozone and granular activated carbon was applied to degradation humic acid in aquatic system. The aim of this work to test the available of acid-treated granular activated carbon as catalyst in the ozonation of humic acid.
