  • The corrosion behavior of the Inconel X-750 alloy was investigated for its potential application under a Cl2-O2 mixed gas flow in an Ar atmosphere. The corrosion rate was found to be negligible at temperatures up to 400℃ under a flow rate of 30 mL·min-1 Cl2 + 170 mL·min-1 Ar, whereas an exponential increase was observed in the corrosion rate at temperatures greater than 500℃. The suppression of the corrosion reaction due to the presence of O2 was verified experimentally at flow rates of 30 mL·min-1 Cl2 (4.96 g·m-2·h-1), 20 mL·min-1 Cl2 + 10 mL·min-1 O2 (2.02 g·m-2 ·h-1), and 10 mL·min-1 Cl2 + 20 mL·min-1 O2 (1.34 g·m-2·h-1) under a constant Ar flow rate of 170 mL·min-1 at 600℃ for 8 h. The surface morphology analysis results revealed that porous surfaces with tunnel-type holes were produced under the Cl2-O2 mixed-gas condition. Furthermore, the effects of the Cl2 flow rate on the corrosion rate were investigated, indicating that its impact was negligible within the range of 5-30 mL·min-1 Cl2 at 600℃.

  • It is important to keep stable effluent water quality and minimize operation cost in biological wastewater treatment plant. However, the optimal operation is difficult because of the change of influent flow rate and concentrations, the nonlinear dynamics of microbiology growth rate and other environmental factors. Therefore, many wastewater treatment plants are operated for much more redundant oxygen or chemical dosing than the necessary. In this study, the optimal control scheme for dissolved oxygen (DO) is suggested to prevent over-aeration and the reduction of the electric cost in plant operation while maintaining the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration for the metabolism of microorganisms in oxic reactor. For optimal control, The oxygen uptake rate (OUR) is realtime measured for the identification of influent characterization and the identification of microorganisms' oxygen requirement in oxic reactor. Optimal DO seT-Point needed for the microorganism is suggested based on real time measurement of oxygen uptake of microorganism and the control of air blower. Therefore, both stable effluent quality and minimization of electric cost are satisfied with a suggested optimal setpoint decision system by providing the necessary oxygen supply requirement to the microorganisms coping with the variations of influent loading.

  • A series of experiments using atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasma coupled with transition metal catalysts were performed to remove ethylene from agricultural storage facilities. The non-thermal plasma was created by dielectric barrier discharge, which was in direct contact with the catalyst pellets. The transition metals such as Ag and $V_2O_5$ were supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The effect of catalyst type, specific input energy (SIE) and oxygen content on the removal of ethylene was examined to understand the behavior of the hybrid plasma-catalytic reactor system. With the other parameters kept constant, the plasma-catalytic activity for the removal of ethylene was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ from high to low. Interestingly, the rate of plasma-catalytic ozone generation was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, implying that the catalyst activation mechanisms by plasma are different for different catalysts. The results obtained by varying the oxygen content indicated that nitrogen-derived reactive species dominated the removal of ethylene under oxygen-lean condition, while ozone and oxygen atoms were mainly involved in the removal under oxygen-rich condition. When the plasma was coupled with $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, nearly complete removal of ethylene was achieved at oxygen contents higher than 5% by volume (inlet ethylene: 250 ppm; gas flow rate: $1.0Lmin^{-1}$; SIE: ${\sim}355JL^{-1}$).

  • This paper presents the characteristics of lifted height and flame length from non-premixed jet flames in highly preheated air to investigate the detail combustion mechanism in the gas turbine or HCCI engine, etc. Special attention was paid to the effect of preheated air temperature, oxygen concentration and fuel injection flow rate on flame length and lifted hight. By using highly preheated air, stable flames were formed even in low oxygen concentration condition. The lifted height increased with decreasing preheated air temperature, where the flame length showed opposed phenomena. The flamelet model, which is thought to have very thin flamelet, is difficult to applicable to the present flame conditions which is formed In low oxygen concentration in highly preheated air.

  • ZnO thin films on (001) sapphire substrates have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition(PLD) technique using an Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 266nm. Before post-annealing treatment in the oxygen ambient, the experiment of the deposition of ZnO thin films has been performed for substrate temperatures in the range of $300\~450^{\circ}C$ and oxygen gas flow rate of $100\~700\;sccm$. In order to investigate the effect of post-annealing treatment of ZnO thin films, films have been annealed at various temperatures after deposition. After post-annealing treatment in the oxygen ambient, the structural properties of ZnO thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and the optical properties of the ZnO were characterized by photoluminescence(PL).

  • Slopping deteriorates the productivity and the stability of operation in BOF refining process, and hence POSCO has developed methods to predict and prevent slopping. Specific equipment was developed to measure the change of the reacting force to the oxygen-blowing lance against oxygen jet and the force was gathered and analyzed with the flow rate of oxygen and the height of lance. From this study, it was found that the reacting force is strongly correlated to the slag foam height. Currently, the modeling of the relation of the slag foaming level and the vertically acted force to lance is being approached for predicting the slopping.

  • The oxygen consumption of fresh and aged slices of potato tuber was 40.6 and 168.0 ,$0_2$ $\mu$l/g fr $wt{\cdot}h$, respectively. After initial burst of oxygen consumption within 2 minutes(i.e., 40% for fresh and 12% for aged slices) in the treatmentof $50{\mu}M$ alantolactone, gradual decrease of respiration rate was observed during 3 hours of incubation. In case of the aged slices the initial burst of oxygen consumption was not observed by salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) or KCN. The combined effect of SHAM and alantolactone showed increase of 12%, while SHAM and KCN combination showed 60% decrease. In addition, the lipophilicity of cell membrane of onion inner epidermis was increased by lantolactone treatment. The results suggest that the primary effect of alantolactone on the cellular respiration may be associated with an alteration of lipophilic phase of cell membrane and a consequent increase of electron flow throuh the cytochrome system.

  • A numerical analysis of reactive flow in a MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustor is accomplished to elucidate the characteristics of combustion phenomena in the furnace with the change of fuel and air nozzle position and air mass flow rate. For the case with the fuel nozzle located near center position of combustor, the reaction zone started at the fuel nozzle and had inclined shape toward combustor wall when the air mass flow rate was relatively smaller. On the other hand, the end of reaction zone moved toward center of combustor from combustor wall when the air flow rate was relatively larger. For the case with the air nozzle located near center position of combustor, the reaction zone started at the fuel nozzle and had inclined shape toward combustor wall when the air mass flow rate was relatively small, which was similar as the previous case with smaller air mass flow rate. On the other hand, the end of reaction zone moved toward combustor wall when the air flow rate was relatively larger. The maximum temperature increased as the air mass flow rate increasing for both cases, and the concentration of thermal NOx increased also from the previous reason of temperature characteristics. The concentration of NOx for the case with the air nozzle located near center position of combustor was considerably smaller than that for the case with the fuel nozzle located near center position of combustor. From the present study, the case with the air nozzle located near center position of combustor and theoretical air flow rate was the most effective condition for the NOx reduction and perfect combustion.

  • The treatment of chemically stable perflourocompounds (PFCs) requires a large amount of energy. An energy efficient arc plasma system has been developed to overcome such disadvantage. $CF_4$, $SF_6$ and $NF_3$ were injected into the plasma torch directly, and net plasma power was estimated from the measurement of thermal efficiency of the system. Effects of net plasma power, waste gas flow rate and additive gases on the destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of PFCs were examined. The calculation of thermodynamic equilibrium composition was also conducted to compare with experimental results. The average thermal efficiency was ranged from 60 to 66% with increasing waste gas flow rate, while DRE of PFCs was decreased with increasing gas flow rate. On the other hand, DRE of each PFCs was increased with the increasing input power. Maximum DREs of $CF_4$, $SF_6$ and $NF_3$ were 4%, 15% and 90%, respectively, without reaction gas at the fixed input power and waste gas flow rate of 3 kW and 70 L/min. A rapid increase of DRE was found using hydrogen or oxygen additional gases. Hydrogen was more effective than oxygen to decompose PFCs and to control by-products. The major by-product in the arc plasma process with hydrogen was hydrofluoric acid that is easy to be removed by a wet scrubber. DREs of $CF_4$, $SF_6$ and $NF_3$ were 25%, 39% and 99%, respectively, using hydrogen additional gas at the waste gas flow rate of 100 L/min and the input power of 3 kW.

  • The KSR-III Main Propulsion System configuration of the liquid oxygen (LOX) feed line is analyzed. This feed line includes a tighter radius and cavitation venturi for flow mass flow-rate passive control. There were concerns that these configurations might generate a great flow distortion at the engine interface. Also both the pressure drop at the feed line and any presence of separation area are a great concern according to the propellant flow. To resolve these issues, a computational fluid dynamic analysis was conducted to determine the flow field in the LOX feed lines.
