  • The unmanned underwater vehicle(UUV) requires the highly dense energy source because of its limited space. Especially, for the UUV designed for long-term operation, it should be reviewed first whether it is possible to install the energy source against required total power. Therefore, this study identifies whether it is possible to install the energy source for the energy requirement of the UUV. And fuel and oxidizer requirement for the fuel cell system are calculated to determine its location and layout inside of the vehicle. Finally, we design the closed type 1kW polymer-electrolytic fuel cell system and check the applicability to underwater operations with UUV.

  • A systematic study of Cu CMP in terms of the effect of slurry chemicals(oxidizer, corrosion inhibitor, complexing agent) on the process characteristics has been performed. In acidic media, a corrosion inhibitor, benzotriazole(BTA) and tolytriazol(TTA) was used to control the removal rate and avoid isotropic etching. When complexing agent is added with $H_2O_2$ 2wt% in the slurry, a corrosion rate was presented very good. Most of in, it was appeared that BTA is possible to be replaced by TTA. The tartaric acid was distinguished for the effect among complexing agents. n we apply this results to copper CMP process, it is thought that we will be able to obtain better yield.

  • For the development of high efficiency and low emission combustion systems, high temperature air combustion technology has been tested by utilizing preheated air over 1100 K and exhaust gas recirculation. In this system, combustion air is diluted with large amount of exhaust gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$), such that the oxygen concentration is relatively low in the reaction zone, leading to low flame temperature. Since, the temperature fluctuations and sound emissions form the flame are small and flame luminosity is low, the combustion mode is expected to be flameless or mild combustion. Experiment was performed to investigate the turbulent flame structure and $NO_X$ emission characteristics in the high temperature air combustion focused on coflowing jet diffusion flames which has a fundamental structure of many practical combustion systems. The effect of turbulence has also been evaluated by installing perforated plate in the oxidizer inlet nozzle. LPG was used as a fuel. Results showed that even though $NO_X$ emission is sensitive to the combustion air temperature, the present high temperature air combustion system produce low $NO_X$ emission because it is operated in low oxygen concentration condition in excess of dilution.

  • In this paper, the feasibility study and the parametric design of hybrid motor with HTPB/LOX were conducted for micro air launch system. Design results were compared with 1st stage of Pegasus XL for verification of hybrid motor. Results showed that hybrid motor replace solid booster if Isp of hybrid motor reaches 330sec. In addition, mission analysis was established for micro air launch system, and parametric design was conducted with design variables: number of port, initial oxidizer flux, and chamber pressure. And the region of Isp was identified by parametric study which satisfied design constraints and mission analysis.

  • Micro catalytic reactors are alternative propulsion device that can be used on a nano satellite. When used with a monopropellant, $H_2O_2$, a micro catalytic reactor needs only one supply system as the monopropellant reacts spontaneously on contact with catalyst and releases heat without external ignition, while separate supply lines for fuel and oxidizer are needed for a bipropellant rocket engine. Additionally, $H_2O_2$ is in liquid phase at room temperature, eliminating the burden of storage for gaseous fuel and carburetion of liquid fuel. In order to design a micro catalytic reactor, an appropriate catalyst material must be selected. Considering the safety concern in handling the monopropellants and reaction performance of catalyst, we selected hydrogen peroxide at volume concentration of 70% and perovskite redox catalyst of lantanium cobaltate doped with strondium. Perovskite catalysts are known to have superior reactivity in reduction-oxidation chemical processes. In particular, lantanium cobaltate has better performance in chemical reactions involving oxygen atom exchange than other perovskite materials. In the present study, a process to prepare perovskite type catalyst, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$, and measurement of its propellant decomposition performance in a test reactor are described.

  • SU-8 is an epoxy-type photoresist widely used for the fabrication of high-aspect-ratio (HAR) micro-structures in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). To fabricate highly integrated structures, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) has emerged as the preferred manufacturing process for planarizing the MEMS structure. In SU-8 CMP, an oxidizer decomposes organic impurities and particles in the CMP slurry remove the chemically reacted surface of SU-8. To fabricate HAR microstructures using the CMP process, the adhesion between SU-8 and substrate material is important to avoid the delamination of the SU-8 film caused by the mechanical-dominant material removal characteristic. In this study, the friction force during the CMP process is measured with a CMP monitoring system to detect the delamination phenomenon and investigate the delamination of the SU-8 film from the silicon substrate under various pressure conditions. The increase in applied pressure causes an increase in the frictional force and wafer-edge stress concentration. The frictional force measurement shows that the friction force changes according to the delamination phenomenon of the SU-8 film, and that it is possible to monitor the delamination phenomenon during the SU-8 CMP process. The delamination at a high applied pressure is explained by the effect of stress distribution and pad deformation. Consequently, it is necessary to control the pressure of polishing, which can avoid the delamination in SU-8 CMP.

  • In gas turbine technology, the flame stability is inherently greater in conventional diffusion type combustion over a wider range fuel to oxidizer ratio. However, premixed type combustion which has narrow flame stability region, is widely used due to environmental reason. It has been observed in experiments that combustion instability of low frequency (${\sim}10Hz$) results from the modulation of equivalence ratio at fuel injection hole when a pressure fluctuation propagates upwards along the channel of the burner under an unchoked fuel flow condition. In this study, a commercial program was used to determine how the fuel flow rate changed with respect to the pressure, velocity of the fuel flow and the mass fraction in a choked and an unchoked condition. The calculation focuses on the upstream of the dump plane to know how the forced pressure with the fuel injection conditions affects the modulation of the equivalence ratio. Therefore, it is found that pressure fluctuation leads to oscillation of mass flow rate and then results in equivalence ratio modulation under the unchoked fuel flow condition.

  • The study has been conducted to know ablation microstructures and characteristics in carbon /phenolic composites. Ablation properties depend on mole fraction of $H_2O$ and $C0_2$ gas which were produced by reaction between propellant and oxidizer. However, the results of this study shown that the ablation also depended on weaving structure, density of fabric, and tow size of carbon fiber. 3K 8HS fabric showed superior ablation resistance to others, 3K twill and 12K 8HS fabric structures.

  • Recent experimental data shows that an irregular fuel surface pops up during the combustion test. This may contribute to the agitated boundary layer due to blowing effect of fuel vaporization. Blowing effect can be of significance in determining the combustion characteristics of solid fuel within the oxidizer flow. LES was implemented to investigate the flow behavior on the fuel surface and turbulence evolution due to blowing effect. Simple channel geometry was used for the investigation instead of circular grain configuration without chemical reactions. This may elucidate the main mechanism responsible for the formation of irregular isolated spots during the combustion in terms of turbulence generation. The interaction of turbulent flow with blowing mass flus causes to breakup turbulent coherent structures and to form the small scale isolated eddies near the fuel surface. This mechanism attributes to the formation of irregular isolated sopt on the fuel surface.

  • In this study, the solution combustion method was employed to synthesize stoichiometric mullite, and hence the attrition process was employed to prepare ultrafine mullite particles with nano size. The thermal decomposition behavior and partial pressure of equilibrium species of both oxidizer and fuel were considered during solution combustion process. The synthesized product was mullite phase with 40 nm crystalline size, and the alumina contents of the product by TEM/EDS quantity analysis was 3.12$\pm$04 mole. The result showed that the synthesized mullite was almost close to the it's stoichiometric composition. For attrition process, the dispersion behavior of the mullite suspension was controlled and was comminuted with the condition of 800 rpm for 4 hours using 0.3 mm zirconia ball media. As a result of comminution, the mean particle size was 80 nm.
