  • Vol-oxidizer is a device to convert $UO_2$ pellets into $U_3O_8$ powder and to feed a homogeneous powder into a Metal Conversion Reactor in the ACP(Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process). In this paper, we propose a design model of the vol-oxidizer, develop the new vol-oxidizer with a capacity of 20 kg HM/batch in $UO_2$ pellets, and conduct a verification for the device. Design considerations include the internal structure, the capacity, the heating position of the device, and the size. The dimensions of the new vol-oxidizer are decided by the design model. We determine a permeability test of the $U_3O_8$ measuring the temperature distribution, and the volume of $UO_2$ and $U_3O_8$. We manufactured the new vol-oxidizer for a 20 kg HM/batch in $UO_2$ pellets, and then analyzed the characteristics of the $U_3O_8$ powder for the verification. The experimental results show that the permeability of the $U_3O_8$ throughout mesh enhance more than old vol-oxidizer, the oxidation time takes only 8 hours when compared with the 13 hours of the old device, and the average distribution of particle size is $40{\mu}m$. The capacities of new vol-oxidizer for a 20 kg HM/batch in $UO_2$ pellets were agree well with the predictions of design model.

  • The oxidizer-rich preburner's combustion tests were fulfilled in the development process of staged combustion cycle rocket engines. The exhaust plume from an oxidizer-rich preburner is relatively transparent because combustion takes place in oxidizer rich state. During hot fire tests a still and infrared images were captured to visualize the plume structure, temperature distribution and so on. In addition, the exhaust plume was numerically investigated to figure out the detailed characteristics. The combustion was not considered for the numerical modeling, but the mixing of exhaust plume with circumstantial air was modeled by species transport model with several turbulence models. The inner structure of plume was configured out by the comparison of numerical results with experimental results, and the validity of applied numerical models was verified.

  • To understand the each performance parameter correlation of flight type liquid-propellant rocket engine for KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III), the analysis of engine stand-alone combustion test results was carried out. Considering the variation of ablative material combustion chamber caused by erosion, linear regression analysis that ignores oxidizer/fuel ratio effect and two-variable 2nd-order polynomial regression analysis that considers oxidizer/fuel ratio change were performed. It can be described that linear regression analysis is simple and very practical method, and can predict the performance within 1% error inside analyzed region. And two-variable 2nd-order polynomial regression analysis can predict with very high accuracy inside region and shows that KSR-III engine's optimum oxidizer/fuel ratio for thrust(or specific impulse) is 2.22 and that for combustion chamber pressure(or characteristic velocity) is 2.17.

  • In general, combustion characteristic of hybrid propulsion was shown with the regression rate depending on only massflow rate of oxidizer But this empirical relation was not represented well effect of the thermo-chemical properties of solid fuel. So, in this study, the combustion characteristics was studied with the mass transfer number(B number) of solid fuel instead of regression rate with various fuel. The PMMA, PP, and PE were used as fuel, and gas oxygen as oxidizer in this experiment. The mass flowrate of gas oxigen was controlled by the several chocked orifices that have different diameter, and the oxidizer supply range was $3.66\sim45.3g/sec$. As result, the empirical relation for mass flux of solid fuel was obtained with mass transfer number, and mass flux of oxidizer as follow; $\dot{m}^{'}_f\;=\;0.0175G^{0.55}B^{0.4}$.

  • Recently, environmental sustainability of the transitional explosives and propellants is an issue of growing importance in energetic materials. For examples, ammonium perchlorate(AP) as an solid propellants oxidizer could create a poisonous gas and atmospheric pollutions, such as HCl. Among the several oxidizers, hydrazinium nitroformate(HNF) is an effective candidate substance for eco-friendly oxidizer, which has high density, pressure index, and less smog generating property during combustion for the Divert and Attitude Control System(DACS). This study was confirmed a synthesis through various conditions, was performed for the essential data of solubility the crystallization process. Also, crystallization process such as cooling, drowning-out and sonication were performed.

  • Ignition tests of an oxidizer rich preburner for a staged combustion cycle liquid rocket engine were performed to evaluate combustion performance. Design operation conditions of the tested oxidizer rich preburner are about 60 of OF ratio and 20 MPa of combustion pressure. The entire kerosene and some LOx injected into the mixing head is burned in combustion chamber and the remaining LOx injected through center holes of combustion chamber is vaporized. Full flow ignition method with hypergolic fuel was used. Each propellant was supplied in two stages for soft ignition. Test results, low frequency oscillation was occurred in low flow rate conditions under 45% of design flow rate. Stable ignition in the course of design combustion pressure was able to induce by minimization of low flow rate ignition region to escape low frequency oscillation.

  • This paper presents a two-phase model for hybrid rocket internal ballistics design using $N_2O$ as oxidizer The two-phase model results are compared with data obtained from static firing test. Two-phase model is suitable for blow-down type with saturated compressible fluid as $N_2O$, presented the result by Part 1. HDPE as Fuel, and $N_2O$ as oxidizer were used during the static firing test. The combustor were designed for an average thrust of 30 kgf where oxidizer tank pressure in set to 50 bar. The numerical results of internal ballistic showed good agreements with static firing test results where thrust, oxidizer tank pressure and chamber pressure are compared.

  • The process of charging an oxidizer in the liquid propellant rocket can divide into the cooling of the oxidizer tank, the high flow charge, the small flow charge, and the replenishment charge for the correction of temperature. The oxidizer of the Naro(KSLV-I) first stage uses the liquid oxygen. And the flow rate and the temperature specification corresponding to each charge mode are presented for the requirement. The flow throttling valve and heat exchanger are installed in the oxidizer filling system in order to satisfy this kind of the flow rate and temperature requirement specification. In this research, by using the Flowmaster which is a commercial one-dimension thermo-fluidic analysis program, one dimensional flow system analyses was performed to predict the exact flow rate at each specific mode. Also, the flow rate correction sensitivity of the flow control valves was analytically determined to satisfy the flow condition refinement at each mode within the limited certification test.

  • Opening characteristics of a main oxidizer shut-off valve at different valve inlet pressures have been experimentally investigated. The pilot pressure at the moment of the valve opening increases linearly with increasing the valve inlet pressure and the increased pilot pressure reduces the valve travel time. As the pilot pressure increases at the moment of valve opening, the time to start opening the valve is delayed resulting in increasing the valve opening time. With the increment of the valve inlet pressure, the valve opening time is mainly determined by the time required for the pilot pressure to start opening the valve. Therefore the design of a pilot gas supply system can readily control the valve inlet pressure at the valve opening as well as the amount of oxidizer supplied to a combustion chamber during the engine startup.
