  • Human plasma low density lipoprotein(LDL) is the main carrier for cholesterol, and recent studies suggest the normal LDL can be readily oxidized by free radical and not interact with LDL receptor. Lipoprotein pariticles are consisted of lipid andprotein, and fatty acids of lipoproteins are prone to oxidation. LDL particles readily undergo oxidative modification by copper. From the results, oxidized LDL altered its biological properties. A marked increase in the electrophoretic mobility of LDl on agarose gel indicated that negative surface charge of the LDL particles was increased. Also, the results from the HPLC showed that oxidized LDL was degraded into several polypeptides nonenzymatically. Degradation tests which measured the amount of 5-IAF labelled oxidized LDL were carried out by monocyte and hepatocyte cell culture. Hepatocyte cell culture of modified LDL did not show consistent pattern. However, binding rate of modified LDL with HMDM(human monocyte derived macrophage) was enhanced with oxidation, but was retarded by addition of antioxidants(hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, vitamin E). Also comparisons of oxidized-LDL, acetyl-LDL and MDA-LDL showed significant differences in the chemical properteis and binding affinity to HMDM. Thus, modificaition of normal LDL altered its biological properties.

  • We fabricated MTJ devices that have doubly oxidized tunnel barrier using plasma oxidation method to from oxidized AlO$\sub$x/ tunnel barrier. Doubly oxidation I, which sputtered 10 ${\AA}$-bottom Al layer and oxidized it with oxidation time of 10 s. Subsequent sputtering of 13 ${\AA}$-Al was performed and the metallic layer was oxidized for 50, 80 and 120 s., respectively. Doubly oxidation II, which sputtered 10 ${\AA}$-bottom Al layer and oxidized it varying oxidation time for 30∼120 s. Subsequent sputtering of 13 ${\AA}$-Al was performed and the metallic layer was oxidized for 210 sec. Double oxidation process specimen showed MR ratio of above 27% in all experiment range. Singly oxidation process. 13 ${\AA}$-Al layer and oxidized up to 210 s, showed less MR ratio and more narrow process window than those of doubly oxidation. Cross-sectional TEM images would that doubly oxidized barrowers were thinner and denser than singly oxidized ones. XPS characterization confirmed that doubly oxidation of Fe with bottom insulating layer. As a result, doubly oxidation could have superior MR ratio in process extent during long oxidation time because of preventing oxidation of bottom magnetic layer than singly oxidation.

  • The mutagenicity of the thermally oxidized soybean oils was investigated. Each oil sample was taken after 0, 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, and 48 hours of heating at a temperature of $180{\pm}3^{\circ}C$, and was used to study the changes of peroxide value(POV), acid value(AV), iodine value(IV), conjugated dienoic acid content(CDA content, %), and fatty acid composition. Another set of samples was fractionated into non-oxidized and oxidized fractions by column chromatography using silica gel. The mutagenicity of the samples taken from the thermally oxidized oils as well as the non-oxidized and oxidized fractions was investigated with the Ames test. Bacterial tester strains used in the present study were the histidine auxotrophic strains of S. typhimurium TA100, TA1535 and TA 102 for the detection of base pair, and TA98 and TA1537 for frame shift mutations. Each set of samples was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and tested at doses ranging from 0.05 to 5 mg/plate. The oxidized fractions increased significantly the number of $His^+$ revertant colonies of TA100, TA1537 and TA102, thereby showed mutagenic activity on these strains. However none of the oil samples taken within the 48 hours oxidation period showed any mutagenic activity with and without metabolic activation.

  • All lipoproteins are made up of three major classes of lipids : triglycerides, cholesterol, and phospholipids. Lipoproteins vary in their relative content of these lipids as well as in size and protein content. Human low density lipoprotein (LDL) is a main carrier for cholesterol in the blood stream, and it is well established that cholesterol deposits in the arteries stem primarily from LDL and that increased levels of plasma LDL correlated with in increased risk of atherosclerosis. Various lines of research provide strong evidence that lDL may become oxidized in vivo and that oxidized-LDL is the species involved in the formation of early atherosclerotic lesions. the most crucial findings in this context are the following : (1) Oxidized -LDL has chemotactic properties and if present in the intimal space of the arteries would recruit blood monocytes which then can develop into tissue macrophages ; (2) marcrophages take up oxidized-LDL unregulated to from lipid laden foam cells ; (3) Oxdized-LDLis highly cytotoxic and could be responsible for damage of the endothelial layer and for the destruction of smooth muscle cells.

  • Periodate-oxidized soluble starch increased pH stability of Aspergillus awamori a-glucosidase. After incubation for two hours, the enzyme in the absence of oxidized soluble starch was stable in the range of pH 3-7 at 40℃, pH 3-6 at 50℃ and the enzyme in the presence of oxidized soluble starch was stable in the range of pH 3-9 at 40℃, pH 3-8 at 50℃. At 60℃, the enzyme was stable in pH 3-6 regardless of the presence or absence of IO₄-oxidized soluble starch, but when IO₄-oxidized soluble starch existed in pH 5-6, remained activity of the enzyme increased 20% more than when it didn't exist. The enzyme modified with IO₄-oxidized soluble starch remained 70% of activity in pH 9, but native enzyme didn't remain, showing the increase of stability due to modification. In thermal stability, modified enzyme remained 12% at 50℃ and 7% at 80℃. But native enzyme remained 8% at 50℃ and didn't remain at more than 70℃. The result of HPLC analysis revealed the subunit of the enzyme at under pH 2 or over pH 9 was separated or the enzyme was denatured and conjugated. Protein structure of native enzyme was denatured by acidic and basic pH but was stable in the presence of IO₄-oxidized soluble starch.

  • We study the relationships between the thermal emissivity of nuclear graphites (IG-110, PCEA, IG-430 and NBG-18) and their surface structural change by oxidation using scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The nonoxidized (0% weight loss) specimen had the surface covered with glassy materials and the 5% and 10% oxidized specimens, however, showed high roughness of the surface without glassy materials. During oxidation the binder materials were oxidized first and then graphitic filler particles were subsequently oxidized. The 002 interlayer spacings of the non-oxidized and the oxidized specimens were about $3.38{\sim}3.39{\AA}$. There was a slight change in crystallite size after oxidation compared to the nonoxidized specimens. It was difficult to find a relationship between the thermal emissivity and the structural parameters obtained from the XRD analysis.

  • The membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) creates a natural partnership of a membrane and biofilm, because a gas-transfer membrane delivers a gaseous substrate to the biofilm that grows on the membrane's outer wall. $O_2$-based MBfRs (called membrane aerated biofilm reactors, or MABRs) have existed for much longer than $H_2$-based MBfRs, but the $O_2$-based MBfR is a versatile platform for reducing oxidized contaminants in many water-treatment settings: drinking water, ground water, wastewater, and agricultural drainage. Extensive bench-scale experimentation has proven that the $H_2$-based MBfR can reduce many oxidized contaminant to harmless or easily removed forms: e.g., ${NO_3}^-$ to $N_2$, ${ClO_4}^-$ to $H_2O$ and $Cl^-$, ${SeO_4}^{2-}$ to $Se^0$, and trichloroethene (TCE) to ethene and $Cl^-$. The MBfR has been tested at the pilot scale for ${NO_3}^-$ and ${ClO_4}^-$ and is now entering field-testing for many of the oxidized contaminants alone or in mixtures. For the MBfR to attain its full promise, several issues must be addressed by bench and field research: understanding interactions with mixtures of oxidized contaminants, treating waters with a high TDS concentration, developing modules that can be used in situ to augment pre-denitrification of wastewater, and keeping the capital costs low.

  • We have fabricated advanced metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors with thin (${\approx}10\;nm$) Inductive-Coupled Plasma (ICP) CVD $Si_xN_y$ dielectric layers and investigated electrical properties of nitrided $SiO_2$/4H-SiC interface after oxidizing the $Si_xN_y$ in dry oxidation and/or $N_2$ annealing. An improvement of electrical properties have been revealed in capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current density-electrical field (J-E) measurements if compared with non-annealed oxidized-SiN. The improvements of SiC MOS capacitors formed by oxidized-SiN have been explained in this paper.

  • This paper describes the effects of thermally oxidized tallow on the serum lipids profile and radical scavenging activity (RSA) of the lipids extracted from the different tissues of the rabbits. Tallow was thermally oxidized at $130^{\circ}C$ for 9, 18, 27, 36 and 45 h respectively. Thermally oxidized tallow was fed to the local strain of Himalayan rabbits for one week. Results show that oxidation increases the formation of hydroperoxides and decrease the level of radical scavenging activity of the tallow. The rabbit serum lipids profile showed a dose dependent increase in triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. However, no statistically significant increase was observed in the HDL-cholesterol with an increase of oxidation time. Serum glucose and rabbits body weight decrease significantly (p < 0.05) and was highly correlated with the serum lipids profile. The percent RSA of the lipids extracted from the liver, brain and muscles tissues showed a significant decrease with respect to 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/body weight as well as oxidation time. Data suggests that thermal oxidation and use of thermally oxidized beef tallow is harmful and therefore an alternative way of cooking should be used.

  • An oxidized starch ester was prepared and used for surface sizing. Esterification of starch decreased both Brookfield viscosity and Brabender viscosity substantially even though the solids level was increased by 2% from 14% to 16%. Surface sizing with the esterified starch gave better performance in tensile strength, stiffness and compressive strength than surface sizing with oxidized starch in the laboratory. Advantages in strength improvement, however, were not obtained when it was applied in commercial papermaking process. This was attributed to the fact that the influence of starch types has been nullified by high pressure penetration that occurs in the commercial papermaking process. Drying energy consumption, however, decreased by 3.3% by substituting the low solids oxidized starch with a high solids starch ester.
