This study investigated soil microbial community and growth of Zea mays to compare the toxicity of nano and micro-sized Cu and Zn oxide particles in microcosm system. In the presence of nanoparticles, biomass of Zea mays reduced by 30% compared with micro-sized particles and inhibited growth. Dehydrogenase activity was inhibited by CuO nano although it was increased by ZnO nano particles. According to the Biolog test, the microbial diversity was decreased after exposed to CuO nanoparticles and ZnO microparticles. Therefore, though it is widely recognized that nanoparticles are more harmful than microparticles, we can conclude that the diversity of microbial community does not always influenced by the size of particles of nano and micro.

The demand for powder-coated steel used in the marine industry is increasing owing to their superior corrosion resistance. However, the powder coatings used in commercial products can deteriorate easily by the penetration of brine. In an attempt to suppress brine penetration into the powder coating and significantly increase the corrosion resistance, three types of oxide particles were added to the coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 3.5% NaCl solution were performed to evaluate the corrosion behaviors of the powder coating with oxide particles. The results showed that the addition of SiO2 particles to a powder coating severely decreased the corrosion resistance due to the easy detachment of agglomerated SiO2 particles with a coarse size from the coating layer. In contrast, the TiO2 and SnO2-added coatings showed better corrosion resistance, and the TiO2-added coating performed best in the test conducted at room temperature. However, conflicting results were obtained from tests conducted at a higher temperature, which may be attributed to the effective suppression of brine penetration by the fine SnO2 particles uniformly distributed in the coating.

The micron-sized indium zinc tin oxide (IZTO) particles were prepared by spray pyrolysis from aqueous precursor solution for indium, zinc, and tin and organic additives such as citric acid (CA) and ethylene glycol (EG) were added to aqueous precursor solution for indium, zinc, and tin. The obtained IZTO particles prepared by spray pyrolysis from the aqueous solution without organic additives had spherical and filled morphologies, whereas the IZTO particles obtained with organic additives had more hollow and porous morphologies. The micron-sized IZTO particles with organic additives were changed fully to nano-sized IZTO particles, whereas the micron-sized IZTO particles without organic additives were not changed fully to nano-sized IZTO particle after post-treatment at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and wet-ball milling for 24 hours. Surface resistances of micron-sized IZTO's before post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling were much higher than those of nano-sized IZTO's after post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling. From IZTO with composition of 80 wt. % $In_2O_3$, 10 wt. % ZnO, and 10 wt. % $SnO_2$ which showed a smallest surface resistance IZTO after post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling, thin films were deposited on glass substrates by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering, and the electrical and optical properties were investigated.
In this study, by using tin chloride solution as a raw material, a nano-sized tin oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm is generated by a spray pyrolysis process. The properties of the generated tin oxide powder depending on the inflow speed of the raw material solution are examined. When the inflow speed of the raw material solution is 2 ml/min, the majority of generated particles appear in the shape of independent polygons with average size above 80-100 nm, while droplet-shaped particles show an average size of approximately 30 nm. When the inflow speed is increased to 5 ml/min, the ratio of independent particles decreases, and the average particle size is approximately 80-100 nm. When the inflow speed is increased to 20 ml/min, the ratio of droplet-shaped particles increases, whereas the ratio of independent particles with average size of 80-100 nm decreases. When the inflow speed is increased to 100 ml/min, the average size of the generated particles is around 30-40 nm, and most of them maintain a droplet shape. With a rise of inflow speed from 2 ml/min to 5 ml/min, a slight increase of the XRD peak intensity and a minor decrease of specific surface area are observed. When the inflow speed is increased to 20 ml/min, the XRD peak intensity falls dramatically, although a significant rise of specific surface area is observed. When the inflow speed is increased to 100 ml/min, the XRD peak intensity further decreases, while the specific surface area increases.
Spherical monosized pure aluminum (Al) particles are successfully fabricated by the pulsated orifice ejection method (POEM). The surface reaction between Al and the graphite crucible is investigated by analysing the microstructure and chemical composition of the materials. No significant chemical reaction occurs between Al and the graphite owing to the crystalline Al oxide (${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$) layer generated in the initial state. The ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer is clearly observed in all regions between the Al particles and graphite via transmission electron microscopy and confirmed by the selected area diffraction pattern. The morphology of the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer perfectly follows the surface morphology of the graphite crucible, which showed nanoscale roughness. This implies that molten Al could not directly contact graphite even though the surface of the crucible became rough to some extent. However, this passivation phenomenon allowed the successful fabrication of monosized pure Al particles. Therefore, POEM is a useful process at least to manufacture monosized pure Al particles.
The effect of spray deposition of oxide particles on oxidation behaviors of as-cast Mo-14.2Si-9.6B (at%) alloys at $1200^{\circ}C$ up to for 100 hrs has been investigated. Various oxide powders are utilized to make coatings by spray deposition, including $SiO_2,\;TiO_2,\;ZrO_2,\;HfO_2$ and $La_2O_3$. It is demonstrated that the oxidation resistance of the cast Mo-Si-B alloy can be significantly improved by coating with those oxide particles. The growth of the oxide layer is reduced for the oxide particle coated Mo-Si-B alloy. Especially, for the alloy with $ZrO_2$ coating, the thickness of oxide layer becomes only one fifth of that of uncoated alloys when exposed to in air for 100 hrs. The reduction of oxide scale growth of the cast Mo-Si-B alloy due to oxide particle coatings are discussed in terms of the change of viscosity of glassy oxide phases that form during oxidation at high temperature.
Synthesis and compaction of Al-base nano powders by pulsed discharge method were investigated. The aluminum based powders with 50 to 200 nm of diameter were produced by pulsed wire evaporation method. The powders were covered with very thin oxide layer. The perspective process for the compaction and sintering of nanostructured metal-based materials stable in a wide temperature range can be seen in the densification of nano-sized metal powders with uniformly distributed hard ceramic particles. The promising approach lies in utilization of natural uniform mixtures of metal and ceramic phases, e.g. partially oxidized metal powders as fabricated in our synthesis method. Their particles consist of metal grains coated with oxide films. To construct a metal-matrix material from such powder, it is necessary to destroy the hard oxide coatings of particles during the compaction process. This goal was realized in our experiments with intensive magnetic pulsed compaction of aluminum nanopowders passivated in air.

The characteristics of fretting wear are reviewed. Fretting damage depends on slip amplitude and classified into three groups: (1) an annular damage according to Mindlin's analysis at microslip region, (2) strong adhesive deformation without loose wear particles at the intermediate region, and (3) formation of fine oxide particles at the gross slip region. The critical slip amplitude of fretting is the boundary between (2) and (3). The boundary slip amplitude depends on normal load. The wear rate increases and saturates with increasing slip amplitude. But it is constant by considering the critical amplitude. The role of oxide particles are discussed. Three different actions are noted: accelerating wear, preventing wear and insignificant effect. The oxide shows two opposing effect depends on normal load and slip amplitude. This is related to the removal rate from the interface (abrasive action) and compaction rate at the interface to form a protective layer. The effect of oxidation is significant to determine the wear and friction. The diffusion of oxygen is restricted at the small amplitude. As a result, crack formation at the boundary is a predominant damage, related to fretting fatigue damage.

Tin oxide nanoparticles (n-SnO and $n-SnO_2$) were synthesized by the inert gas condensation (IGC) method under dynamic gas flow of oxygen and argon at various conditions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) method were used to analysis the size, shape and crystal structure of the produced powders. The synthesized particles were mostly amorphous and their size increased with increasing the partial pressure of oxygen in the processing chamber. The particles also became broader in size when higher oxygen pressures were applied. Low temperature annealing at $320^{\circ}C$ in air resulted to crystallization of the amorphous n-SnO particles to $SnO_2$.
