  • The cell permeability and cytotoxic effects of different-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles were investigated using a human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line called Caco-2. Morphological observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that three zinc oxides with different mean particle sizes (ZnO-1, 20 nm; ZnO-2, 90~200 nm; ZnO-3, $1\sim5\;{\mu}m$) tended to aggregate, particularly in the case of ZnO-1. When cytotoxicities of all three sizes of zinc oxide particles were measured at concentration ranges of $1\sim1000\;{\mu}g$/mL, significant decreases in cell viability were observed at concentrations of $50\;{\mu}g$/mL and higher. Among the three zinc oxides, ZnO-1 showed the lowest viability at $50\;{\mu}g$/mL in Caco-2 cells, followed by ZnO-2 and ZnO-3. The permeate concentration of ZnO-1 from the apical to the basolateral side in the Caco-2 model system after four hours was about three-fold higher than that of either ZnO-2 or ZnO-3. These results demonstrated that ZnO-1, with a 20 nm mean particle size, had poorer viability and better permeability in Caco-2 cells than ZnO-2 and ZnO-3.

  • The optimum conditions were studied for the preparation of transparent iron oxide with the air oxidation of FeOOH. The FeOOH obtained by mixing NaOH and FeSO$_4$ solution in various conditions such as R(=2NaOH/FeSO$_4$), FeSO$_4$ concentration. reaction temperature and air flow rate. When the FeSO$_4$ increased gradually, the concentration of iron ion in the solution became high. So, particle size increased precipitating Fe$_3O_4$. Goethite dehydrate at about 200$^{\circ}C$ and ended the reaction at about 320$^{\circ}C$ forming hematite. The lower the reaction temperature was, the shorter the particle length of goethite and particle size decreased. When the flow rate of air as an oxidant increased, the amount of dissolved oxygen in the solution increased, which made oxidation rate increased. And then particle size of goethite decreased.

  • In kinetic spraying process, the critical velocity is an important criterion which determines the deposition of a feedstock particle onto the substrate. In other studies, it was experimentally and numerically proven that the critical velocity is determined by the physical and mechanical properties and the state of materials such as initial temperature, size and the extent of oxidation. Compared to un-oxidized feedstock, oxidized feedstock required a greater kinetic energy of in-flight particle to break away oxide film during impact. The oxide film formed on the surface of particle and substrate is of a relatively higher brittleness and hardness than those of general metals. Because of its physical characteristics, the oxide significantly affected the deposition behavior and critical velocity. In this study, in order to investigate the effects of oxidation on the deposition behavior and critical velocity of feedstock, oxygen contents of Al feedstock were artificially controlled, individual particle impact tests were carried out and the velocities of in-flight Al feedstock was measured for a wide range of process gas conditions. As a result, as the oxygen contents of Al feedstock increased, the critical velocity increased.

  • The fabrication characteristics of porous uranium oxide granules from $U_3O_8$ powder was investigated in terms of initial particle bed motions such as slumping and rolling, thermal treatment conditions, and rotational velocities in slumping motion using a rotary voloxidizer. With respect to the initial particle bed motion the recovery rate of granule of above 1 mm in slumping motion was higher than that in the rolling motion. Rolling motion was changed into slumping motion with high slumping frequency by formation of granules from fine particles. Recovery rate of granule significantly increased with the increas in thermal treatment temperature and time of upto 10 h. As the rotational velocity of voloxidizer in the case of the initial particle bed showing slumping motion increased, the recovery rate of granule increased from 81.5 to 88.7%. However, the rotational velocity of 2 rpm provided an effective density, crushing strength and sphericity of granules.

  • In this study, we produced heat-shield coating materials using surface-treated Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) and investigated the dispersity of particle, visible light transmittance, ultraviolet light cut off, infrared light cut-off, heat-shielding property by surface-treating compounds and treatment conditions. In the case of using IPA or acryl binder for heat-shield coating, the dispersity of inorganic oxide particles was poor but in the case of using surface-treated inorganic oxide particles by hybrid compound having urethane (urea) group, acryl group and silica, dispersity of particle, visible light transmittance and haze were improved. We used the measurement kit and sunlamp for measuring heat-shielding property and confirmed that the internal temperature of the measurement kit using heat-shield film was lower more than $4.8^{\circ}C$ in comparison with using PET film for itself.

  • In this study, by using tin chloride solution as a raw material, a nano-sized tin oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm is generated by a spray pyrolysis process. The properties of the generated tin oxide powder depending on the inflow speed of the raw material solution are examined. When the inflow speed of the raw material solution is 2 ml/min, the majority of generated particles appear in the shape of independent polygons with average size above 80-100 nm, while droplet-shaped particles show an average size of approximately 30 nm. When the inflow speed is increased to 5 ml/min, the ratio of independent particles decreases, and the average particle size is approximately 80-100 nm. When the inflow speed is increased to 20 ml/min, the ratio of droplet-shaped particles increases, whereas the ratio of independent particles with average size of 80-100 nm decreases. When the inflow speed is increased to 100 ml/min, the average size of the generated particles is around 30-40 nm, and most of them maintain a droplet shape. With a rise of inflow speed from 2 ml/min to 5 ml/min, a slight increase of the XRD peak intensity and a minor decrease of specific surface area are observed. When the inflow speed is increased to 20 ml/min, the XRD peak intensity falls dramatically, although a significant rise of specific surface area is observed. When the inflow speed is increased to 100 ml/min, the XRD peak intensity further decreases, while the specific surface area increases.

  • In fine-particle injection processing, hard fine particles, such as silicon carbide or aluminum oxide, are injected - using high-pressure air, and a small amount of material is removed by applying an impact to the workpiece by spraying at high speeds. In this study, a two-axis stage device capable of sequence control was developed to spray various shapes, such as circles and squares, on the surface during the micro-particle jetting process to understand the surface-shape micro-particle-processing characteristics. In the experimental device, two stepper motors were used for the linear movement of the two degree-of-freedom mechanism. The signal output from the microcontroller is - converted into a signal with a current sufficient to drive the stepper motor. The stepper motor rotates precisely in synchronization with the pulse-signal input from the outside, eliminating the need for a separate rotation-angle sensor. The major factors of the processing conditions are fine particles (silicon carbide, aluminum oxide), injection pressure, nozzle diameter, feed rate, and number of injection cycles. They were identified using the ANOVA technique on the design of the experimental method. Based on this, the surface roughness of the spraying surface, surface depth of the spraying surface, and radius of the corner of the spraying surface were measured, and depending on the characteristics, the required spraying conditions were studied.
