  • Unite cell of soid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) that consists of a dense yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) electrolyte a porous nickel-YSZ cermet anode and a porous strontium- doped lanthanum manganate(LSM) cathod was fabricated from using pore former through co-firing technique. Initial sintering shrinkage rates of each layer were identified for fabricating SOFC. Heterogenous sintering was very effective in tailoring shrinkage rate for three layers. The powder tailoring necessary for shrinkage rate matching are as follows ; electrolyte of 60% TZ8YS/ 40% TZ8Y mixture anode of 51wt% NiO/49 wt% (70wt% TZ8YS/30 wt% UT ZrO2) mixture and cathode of 80% LSM/20% UT ZrO2 mixture . The overall sintering shrinkage rate differences of three layers using these compositions were maintained in a few percent.

  • The simulation model for metal-supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC) is developed in this study. Open circuit voltage is calculated using Nernst equation and Gibbs free energy is required by thermodynamic. The exchange current densities are compared with experimental results since exchange current density is most effective factor for the activation loss. Liu's study is used for the exchange current density of cathode, BSCF, and Koide's result is applied for the exchange current density of anode, Ni/YSZ. For the ohmic loss, ionic conductivity of YSZ is described from Kilner's mode and the data are compared with Wanzenberg's experimental data. Diffusivity is an important factor for the mass transfer through the porous medium. Both binary diffusion and Knudsen diffusion are considered as the diffusion mechanism. For validation, simulation results at this work are compared with our experimental results.

  • This study has been investigated that traps generated inside of the oxide and at the oxide interfaces by the stress bias voltage. The traps are charged near the cathode with negative charge and charged near the anode with positive charge. The charge state of the traps can easily be changed by application of low voltages after the stress high voltage. These trap generation involve either electron impact ionization processes or high field generation processes. It determined to the relative traps locations inside the oxides ranges from 113.4A to 814A with capacitor areas of 10$^{-3}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$ The oxide charge state of traps generated by the stress high voltage contain either a positive or negative charge.

  • This work involves a method for modeling the flow distribution in the stack of a solid oxide fuel cell. Towards this end, a three dimensional modeling of the flow through a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) stack was carried out using the CFD analysis. This paper examines the efficacy of using cold flow analysis to describe the flow through a SOFC stack. It brings out the relative importance of temperature effect and the mass transfer effect on the SOFC manifold design. Another feature of this study is to utilize statistical tools to ascertain the extent of uniform flow through a stack. The results showed that the cold flow analysis of flow through SOFC might not lead to correct manifold designs. The results of the numerical calculations also indicated that the mass transfer across membrane was essential to correctly describe the cathode flow, while only temperature effects were sufficient to describe the anode flow in a SOFC.

  • This study aims to devise and analyze a power generation system combining the solid oxide fuel cell and oxy-fuel combustion technology. The fuel cell operates at an elevated pressure, a constituting a SOFC/gas turbine hybrid system. Oxygen is extracted from the high pressure cathode exit gas using ion transport membrane technology and supplied to the oxy-fuel power system. The entire system generates much more power than the fuel cell only system due to increased fuel cell voltage and power addition from oxy-fuel system. More than one third of the power comes out of the oxy-fuel system. The system efficiency is also higher than that of the fuel cell only system. Recovering most of the generated carbon dioxide is major advantage of the system.

  • This paper summarized concept, manufacture and results of the micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The cells were fabricated by co-sintering of extruded micro-tubular anode support and electrolyte coating layer, and then additional cathode coating. The cells showed quick voltage rising within 1 minute, and the electrochemical performances were closely related to the balance of fuel utilization and performance loss. And a thermal-fluid simulation model was also reported in combination with the electrochemical evaluation results on the GDC-based micro-tubular SOFCs.

  • The demands to improve the performance of the vanadium redox flow battery have attracted an intense research on modifying the carbon-based electrode. In this study, the surface of graphite felt was reformed, using cobalt oxide. The cobalt oxide was implanted into graphite felt during hydrothermal and two step heat treatments. The cobalt was deposited by hydrothermal method and the two step heat treatments made lots of holes on the graphite felt surface which is called as porous surface. The porous surface acts as an electrochemically active site for the cathodic reaction of vanadium redox flow battery. The reformed electrode shows the electrochemically improved performance compared with the pristine electrode.

  • A new small sized Lateral Trench electrode Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor(LTEIGBT) was proposed to improve the characteristics of conventional Lateral IGBT (LIGBT) and Lateral Trench gate IGBT (LTIGBT). The entire electrode of LTEIGBT was replace with trench-type electrode. The LTEIGBT was designed so that the width of device was no more than 19 ㎛. The Latch-up current densities of LIGBT, LTIGBT and the proposed LTEIGBT were 120A/㎠, 540A/㎠, and 1230A/㎠, respectively. The enhanced latch-up capability of the LTEIGBT was obtained through holes in the current directly reaching the cathode via the p+ cathode layer underneath n+ cathode layer. The forward blocking voltage of the LTEIGBT is 130V. Conventional LIGBT and LTIGBT of the same size were no more than 60V and 100V, respectively. Because the the proposed device was constructed of trench-type electrodes, the electric field moved toward trench-oxide layer, and punch through breakdown of LTEIGBT is occurred, lately.

  • The layered nickel oxides (LiNiO$_2$) have been studied for possible use as cathode materials i3l 4V lithium batteries. Although LiCoO$_2$ has been known as the best candidate material for Li-ion batteries, which produces the best performance LiNiO$_2$ is generally accepted as an attractive cathode material, because of its various advantages such as lower cost higher discharge capacity and better reversibility. In this investigation, we calculated the electric state of LiNiO$_2$ using DV-X$\alpha$ molecular orbital method in order to obtain the information of chemical bonding among the Li, Ni and O. In LiNiO$_2$, alternate layers of Li and Ni occupy the octahedral sites of a cubic close packing of oxide ions, making up a rhombohedral structure with an R-3m space group, Li in 3a, Ni in 3b, and O in 6c sites. On the basis of this, we made the cluster model and studied ionization of each atoms and interaction between atoms according to Mullilcen population analysis.

  • A new small scaling Lateral Trench Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (SSLTIGBT) was proposed to improve the characteristics of the device. The entire electrode of the LTIGBT was replaced with a trench-type electrode. The LTIGBT was designed so that the width of device was no more than 10$\mu\textrm{m}$. The latch-up current densities were improved by 4.5 and 7.6 times, respectively, compared to those of the same sifted conventional LTIGBT and the conventional LTIGBT which has the width of 17$\mu\textrm{m}$. The enhanced latch-up capability of the SSLTIGBT was obtained due to the fact that the hole current in the device reaches the cathode via the p+ cathode layer underneath the n+ cathode layer, directly. The forward blocking voltage of the SSLTIGBT was 125 V. At the same size, those of the conventional LTIGBT and the conventional LTIGBT with the width of 17$\mu\textrm{m}$ were 65 V and 105 V, respectively. Because the proposed device was constructed of trench-type electrodes, the electric field in the device were crowded to trench oxide. Thus, the punch through breakdown of LTEIGBT occurred late.
