  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine characteristics of workers' exposures to airborne total and hexavalent chromium by job title in electroplating processes. Methods: Total Cr was determined through a modified method based on NIOSH Method 7024. Airborne hexavalent Cr, Cr(VI), was sampled and extracted according to NIOSH Method 7600 and analyzed at 520 nm using an ion chromatograph/visible detector. Results: The geometric mean(GM) of total Cr concentrations from all factories was $11.2{\mu}g/m^3$(GSD=4.9). The GM of Cr(VI) concentrations from all factories was $2.84{\mu}g/m$ (GSD=5.2), and the concentrations among factories were significantly different (p<0.05). The Cr(VI) levels were lower than total Cr levels. Total Cr exposure levels were highest among buffing workers ($21.6{\mu}g/m^3$), but Cr(VI) levels were highest among plating workers($4.15{\mu}g/m^3$). The concentrations of Cr(VI) and total Cr from plating tasks was highly correlated(r=0.91). Conclusions: In the electroplating industry, plating workers were mainly exposed to Cr(VI), but others were not. Oxidation-reduction states of Cr and job titles should be considered in the exposure or risk assessments of chrome electroplating factories.

  • Chronic wounds, pressure sores, lesions, and infections of microbial origin in bedridden, paralyzed, or malnutrition patients remain the object of study of many researchers. A variety of factors behind the development of these disorders are related to the patient's immune system, making it unable to respond effectively to the treatment of the wound. These factors can be properly controlled, giving particular importance to the ethiology and stage of the wound, as well as the time periods corresponding to the replacement of the dressings. The present research reports a novel foam/soft material, ${{\small}L}$-Cys-g-PCL, with an application for decubitus/pressure ulcers, especially for wounds with a difficult healing process due to infections and constant oxidation of the soft tissues. During this work, the interactions between S. aureus and ${{\small}L}$-Cys-g-PCL foam were studied under conditions that simulate decubitus ulcers; namely, pH and exudate. The effects of duration of grafting (1 or 8 h) and pH (7.0 and 8.9) on wettability, surface energy, swelling, and porosity were also evaluated. Results showed an effective microbicidal activity exhibiting an inhibition ratio of 99.73% against S. aureus. This new ${{\small}L}$-Cys-g-PCL soft material showed saftey to contact skin, ability to be shaped to fill in sunken holes (craters) - pressure ulcers stage III - and to act as a smart material responsive to pH, which can be tailored to develop better swelling properties at alkaline pH where exudates are normally higher, so as to address exudate self-cleaning and prevention of desiccation.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of soy protein hydrolysates (SPHs) addition on the quality characteristics of pork patties. The SPHs was prepared by subcritical water process (SWP) at 180℃ without holding time and mixed with the pork patty components at varying concentrations (0-3%), and the patties were stored at 4℃ for 14 d. As quality parameters, instrumental color, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), pH, water holding capacity (WHC) and shear force were measured at the end of storage. Regardless of SPHs concentration, the addition of SPHs significantly manifested low L* and high a* values compared to those of untreated control (p<0.05). For b* value, addition of SPHs in the 0.5-1.5% was unaffected, while >2.0% of SPHs caused significantly lower b* than control (p<0.05). The color changes in pork patties with and without SPHs were also identified in visual appearance where the pork patties containing 0.5-2.0% showed bright red color which was comparable to brownish color of control and patties containing >2.5% SPHs. Lipid oxidation was delayed by the addition of 0.5-1.5% SPHs, while it was accelerated by the addition of 3% SPHs. The pH of patties increased with increasing concentration of SPHs, whereas there were no significant differences in WHC and shear force of patties. Consequently, the results indicated that the addition of 0.5-1.5% SPHs had a potential advantage in suppressing oxidative deterioration of fat-containing meat products during chilled storage.

  • The nickel-based alloy Nimonic 80A possesses the excellent strength, and the resistance against corrosion, creep and oxidation at high temperature. Its products are used in aerospace engineering, marine engineering and power generation, etc. Control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate, temperature and holding time is important because change of the microstructure in hot working affects the mechanical properties. Change of the microstructure evolves by recovery, recrystallization and grain growth phenomena. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range of $950\~1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range of $0.05\~5s^{-1}$ using hot compression tests. The metadynamic recrystallization and grain growth evolution has been studied in the temperature range of $950\~1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range $0.05,\;5s^{-1}$, holding time range of 5, 10, 100, 600 sec using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are proposed to represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. Parameters in modeling equations are expressed as a function of the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The modeling equation for grain growth is expressed as a function of the initial grain size and holding time. The modeling equations developed were combined with thermo-viscoplastic finite element modeling to predict the microstructure change evolution during hot forging process. The grain size predicted from FE simulation results is compared with results obtained in field product.

  • Experiment study on a down scaled two-phase catalytic reactor is presented. As a preliminary step for the development of catalytic reactor, nano-particulate catalyst was prepared. Perovskite La$\_$0.8/Sr$\_$0.2/CoO$_3$is chosen and synthesized as a catalyst considering superior catalytic performance in reduction and oxidation process where oxygen is involved among the reagent. Reactor that has a scale of 2${\times}$10${\times}$25mm was made by machining of A1 block as a layered structure considering further extension to micro-machining. Hydrogen peroxide of 70wt% was adopted as reactant and was provided to the reactor loaded with 1.5 g of catalyst. Reactant flow rate was varied by precision pump with a range of 0.15cc/min to 17.2cc/min. Temperature distribution within reactor was recorded by 3 thermocouples and total amount of liquid product was measured. Temperature distribution and factors that affect temperature were observed and relation between temperature distribution and production rate was also analyzed. Relative time scale plays a significant role in the performance of the reactor. To obtain steady state operation, appropriate ratio of flow rate, catalyst mass and reactor geometry is required and furthermore to get more efficient production rate temperature distribution should be evenly distributed. The database obtained by the experiment will be used as a design parameter for micro reactor.

  • The thermal barrier coating must withstand erosion when subjected to flowing gas and should also maintain good stability and mechanical properties while it must also protect the turbine component from high temperature, hot corrosion, creep, and oxidation during operation. In this study we investigated the influence of subsurface layer, $Al_2O_3$ or NiCrCoAIY bond coat layer, on the indentation damage behavior of YSZ thermal barrier coating layers deposited by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The bond coat is deposited using different process such as air plasma spray (APS) or spray of high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and the thickness is varied. Hertzian indentation technique is used to induce micro damages on the coated layer. The stress-strain behaviors are characterized by results of the indentation tests.

  • ZnO is of great interest for various technological applications ranging from optoelectronics to chemical sensors because of its superior emission, electronic, and chemical properties. In addition, vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorods on large areas with good optical and structural properties are of special interest for the fabrication of electronic and optical nanodevices. To date, several approaches have been proposed for the growth of one-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructunres. Several groups have been reported the MOCVD growth of ZnO nanorods with no metal catalysts at $400^{\circ}C$, and fabricated a well-aligned ZnO nanorod array on a PLD prepared ZnO film by using a catalyst-free method. It has been suggested that the synthesis of ZnO nanowires using a template-less/surfactant-free aqueous method. However, despite being a well-established and cost-effective method of thin film deposition, the use of magnetrons puttering to grow ZnO nanorods has not been reported yet. Additionally, magnetron sputtering has the dvantage of producing highly oriented ZnO film sat a relatively low process temperature. Currently, more effort has been concentrated on the synthesis of 1D ZnO nanostructures doped with various metal elements (Al, In, Ga, etc.) to obtain nanostructures with high quality, improved emission properties, and high conductance in functional oxide semiconductors. Among these dopants, Ga-doped ZnO has demonstrated substantial advantages over Al-doped ZnO, including greater resistant to oxidation. Since the covalent bond length of Ga-O ($1.92\;{\AA}$) is nearly equal to that of Zn-O ($1.97\;{\AA}$), high electron mobility and low electrical resistivity are also expected in the Ga-doped ZnO. In this article, we report the successful growth of Ga-doped ZnO nanorods on c-Sapphire substrate without metal catalysts by magnetrons puttering and our investigations of their structural, optical, and field emission properties.

  • Thin films of vanadium oxide($VO_{x}$) have been deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering from $V_{2}O_{5}$ target in gas mixture of argon and oxygen. The oxygen/(oxygen+argon) partial pressure ratio of 0% and 8% is adopted. Crystal structure, chemical composition, molecular structure and optical properties of films sputter-deposited under different oxygen gas pressures and in-situ annealed in vacuum at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1h and 4h are characterized through XRD. RBS, FTlR and optical absorption measurements. The films as-deposited are amorphous and those annealed for time longer than 4h are polycrystalline. $V_{2}O_{5}$ and lower oxides co-exist in sputter-deposited films and as the oxygen partial pressure is increased the films become more stoichiometric $V_{2}O_{5}$. When annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, the as-deposited films are reduced to a lower oxide. It is observed that the oxygen atoms located on the V-O plane of $V_{2}O_{5}$ layer participate more readily in the oxidation and reduction process. The optical transmission of the films annealed in vacuum decreases considerably than the as-deposited films and the optical absorption of all the films increases rapidly between 400 and 550nm.

  • The oxidative stress causes many diseases like cancer, aging, cardiovascular disease, degenerative neurological disorders (Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer's disease) by damage of cell membrane, protein deformation, and damage of DNA due to the oxidation of lipid of cell membrane, protein of tissue or enzyme, carbohydrate, and DNA. It is caused by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) that is produced in the metabolic process of oxygen in cell. The superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in cell systemize the antioxidative enzymes to control the oxidative stress. In this research, it is measured that the survival rate of cell by the typical isoflavonoid of daidzein or genistein, activity of antioxidative enzyme, and ROS level, in order to study the effect of isoflavonoid over the ROS production in cell and antioxidative system. As the similar action of the isoflavonoid with the estrogen is examined, women are encouraged to get bean. In view of this trend, it is very important to find out a combination medicine that lowers the oxidative stress caused by the daidzein in the ovarian cell. In the combined treatment of the typical antioxidant of vitamin C to oxidative stress which induced by daidzein recover the control level particularly lowering the ROS in cell by 30%. However, it made no effect in the combined treatment with genistein. Therefore, the research took the combination effect of daidzein with vitamin C in order to check it effect over the antioxidative system. In conclusion, it was disclosed that the oxidative stress caused by daidzein is related to the lowering activity of SOD, and the specific combination effect of daidzein with vitamin C is related to the recovery of SOD activity.

  • Reactive oxygen species(ROS) or free radical-mediated oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiologic process of disease state. This study investigated antioxidative effects of Phellinus linteus extract on the generation of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical, superoxide anion radical(${O_2}^-$), hydroxyl radical(${\cdot}OH$), nitric oxide(NO), and peroxynitrite($ONOO^-$) radical and free radical-mediated protein oxidation under in vitro assay systems. This results showed that Phellinus linteus extract effectively inhibited the generation of free radicals in the all assay system with dose-dependent manner and also significantly reduced the protein oxidative level. Thus, the present study indicates that Phellinus linteus extract possesses a potent antioxidant activity and plays a beneficial role against free radical-induced oxidative injury.
