  • The surface of SiC particles were partially oxidized to produce SiO2 layers on the SiC particles to prepare Al2O3/SiC composite by formation of mullite bonds between the grains of Al2O3 and SiC during sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. This process is considered to enable the sintering of Al2O3/SiC composite at lower temperature and also to relieve the stress, produced by thermal expansion mismatch between Al2O3 and SiC. In fact, Al2O3/SiC composite prepared by oxidation of SiC was observed to be more effectively sintered and densified at lower temperature. Maximum density, flexural strength and microhardness were obtained with 5.65 vol% of mullite content in Al2O3/SiC composite.

  • To prevent or reduce air pollutant from methanol fueled vehicles, methanol oxidation reaction was carried out using a heteropoly acid catalysts. Catalytic activities of catalysts have been experimented at atmospheric pressure in a fixed bed flow reactor. Catalysts were characterized by XRD, IR, thermal analysis, N $H_{3}$-TPD and GC pulse technique. Acidities of catalysts were highly affected by poly-atoms. Methanol conversion was much higher on catalyst with W than on catalyst with Mo as a poly-atoms. With the increase of copper content(X) in C $u_{x}$ $H_{{3-2x}}$PMo catalyst, acidity was decreased and oxidation ability was increased. Methanol conversion and product distribution were affected by the acidity and oxidation ability of catalyst. Especially, supported PdSiW(1wt%) catalyst has a very good methanol conversion and C $O_{2}$ selectivity as high as a commertial 3-way catalyst.t.

  • The effect of oxidation-reduction heating conditions on coating adherence of hot-dip galvanized steel containing silicon has beeninvestigated. The presence of a stbke sillicon oxide formed on the steel surface has been shown to be very detrimenal to proper wetting by liquid zinc. When the steel has more than the critical sillicon content neeled to from a stable external oxide, the use of oxidation-reduction method has been found successful in obtaining a good quality, coated product with excellence adhreence. This can be explained by the formation of an iron oxide. The iron oxrtion of the scale is reduced, leaving the stable oxides dispersed in a fresh metallic iron surface layer. This reduced iron surface is easily wetted by the liquid zinc and excellent adherence is obtained.

  • A study of the pack cemcented SiC coating on graphite was performed and the process conditions were evaluated by means of experimental design. The content of Si, P2O5, B and Al2O3 reaction temperature, reaction time and acid treatment wast tested as the experimental variables. The results were analyzed and compared by the characteristic value of 10% weight loss by oxidation. The acid treatment exhibited the most effective anti-oxidation property and the optimum conditions were the powder composition of 20% Si, 3% B and 77% SiC, the reaction temperature of 1550$^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours with phosphoric acid treatment. The pack coating performed under this condition improved the 10% weight loss oxidation temperature by 514$^{\circ}C$ compared to the bare graphite.

  • The initiation and growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3/metal composites by the directed oxidation of molten commercial AlZnMg-alloy at 1223-1423K were investigated. Spontaneous bulk growth did not occur on the alloy alone. but the uniform initiation and growth of the composite were obtained by putting a thin layer of SiO2 particles on the surface of the alloy. Without SiO2 the external surface of the oxide layer was convered by MgO and MgAl2O4. But with the SiO2 reaction initiate the porous ZnO layers were found on the growth surface. The higher process temperature yielded a lower metal content. The oxidation product of $\alpha$-Al2O3 was found to be oriented with c-axis parallel to th growth direction. The growth rates increased with temperature and the apparent activation energy was 111.8 kJ/mol.

  • Acid sulfate soils occur in the Gimhae plain where they have been formed from brackish alluvial sediments along the sea coast and river estuary. Acid sulfate soils suffer extremely acidity as a result of oxidation of pyrite. Total sulfur content of the soils was the highest in B horizon of Gimhae series and the lowest in A horizon of Deunggu series. The dominant fractions of sulfur in the soils were jarosite-S for Gimhae series, pyrite-S for Bongrim and Haecheog series, and organic-S for Deunggu series. The essential chemical processes of acid sulfate soils are, firstly, the formation of pyrite in waterlogged environment, and subsequently, the oxidation of this pyrite following natural or artificial drainage. Jarosite [K Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6] is a common sulfur mineral of the oxidation condition. Jarosite shows cubic particles with tetrahedral faces.

  • Effects of vacuum packaging and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on shelf life of selenium-supplemented chicken meat during refrigerated storage were examined. Body weight and feed efficiency were unaffected by dietary selenium level. Dietary treatments and packaging methods had no significant effects on level of microbial growth, lightness, and metmyoglobin content. MAP decreased purge loss (10.9-34.5%) and lipid oxidation (15.2-15.9%) more efficiently than vacuum packaging. Broiler chicks supplemented with ${\alpha}$-tocopherol or ${\alpha}$-tocopherol + selenium had similar TBA values. Dietary supplementation of 4 and 8 ppm selenium reduced lipid oxidation, and this effect was less significant in MAP breast meat.

  • Thin films of polyaniline (PANI) salts were in situ deposited on a Pt plate during either chemical polymerization or electrochemical polymerization. The oxidation states of the salt films were controlled by the applied DC potential. AC impedance of the Pt/PANI electrode were measured in monomer-free 1 N HCl solution in order to investigate the electrodic properties of the films at the following applied DC potentials: 0, 0.45 and 0.75 V vs. SCE. Very small differences in film conductivity according to its oxidation state were observed by analysis of the impedance spectra, the reasons of which are complicated by enriched water content in the film and possible decrease in the film thickness during the measurements. The electrochemical activity of the film/solution interface varied with its oxidation state. Stability of the film in 1 N HCl solution was also evaluated by impedance and cyclic voltammetry measurements.

  • The stress-assisted oxidation behaviour of Inconel 52 M/316 austenitic stainless-steel (SS) dissimilar weld joints (DMWJ) in a simulated pressurised water reactor environment was investigated. A corrosion galvanic couple formed between the Inconel 52 M and 316 SS due to differences in their nonferrous metal content. The electric field from the corrosion couple attracted metal cations (e.g. Fe2+, Cr3+) to the Inconel 52 M that were deposited as FeCr2O4. An additional corrosion galvanic couple was generated due to variations in the plastic deformation of the DMWJ. The superposition of electric fields from the different couples resulted in ridge-like oxide depositions in the fusion zone.

  • This study aimed to investigate the use of golden thread extract (GTE), clove extract (CE), and commercially available nitrite for retarding lipid and protein oxidation and for maintaining color stability and sensory attributes in beef patties stored at $4^{\circ}C$. GTE, CE, and nitrite treatment samples were found to be efficient in retarding lipid oxidation as all three treatments resulted in low thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) content (p<0.05). By using GTE, CE, and nitrite into beef patties, protein oxidation was not developed. Incorporation of GTE and CE into beef patties maintained color stability by protecting against the decrease of $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$, chroma, and hue angle values and exhibited significant influence on sensory characteristics, including color and odor of beef patties (p<0.05). Compared to commercially available nitrite, GTE and CE were more effective as antioxidants for inhibiting lipid oxidation, and preserving color stability of fresh beef patties. The study indicated that GTE and CE could be utilized efficiently to extend the shelf life of beef patties.
