  • There is a worldwide interest In the development and commercialization of PEMFCs for vehicular and stationary applications. The major problem in the practical use of PEMFCs is the deactivation of the Pt anode electrocatalyst by the adsorption of carbon monoxide. Therefore, intensive work has been devoted to finding electrocatalysts that are tolerant to CO in hydrogen at operating temperatures bellow $100^{\circ}C$. Also, DMFC is considered to be one of the most promising technologies for energy generation. But, the most important problem associated with the DMFC is the slow reaction rate of methanol oxidation and the second major problem is fuel crossover. So, the performance of a state-of-the-art DMFC is considerably lower than that of hydrogen-fuelled PEMFC. In this research, the preparation and characterization of electrode materials will be introduced. Also, some electrochemical techniques for the characterization of PEMFCs will be presented.

  • The aging characteristics of 2 kinds of 3 years field-aged distribution polymer insulators which were dismounted from 5 regions have been investigated by electrical test and material characterization. Although the tan $\delta$of specimens prepared from weathershed was increased with surface aging, the tan $\delta$and leakage current of real products had no difference between virgin and dismounted ones. Due to the aging, all dismounted polymer insulators had micro-cracks on the surface of weathershed and only the products of manufacturer B showed the reduction of OIT(oxidation induction time). But, there were no differences between virgin and dismounted products in contact angle and chemical structure. Therefore, it can be considered that the aging is only limited on the surface of dismounted polymer insulators and that NMR technique are very useful to evaluate the aging of polymer materials.

  • Colloidal synthesis of nanoparticles with well-controlled size, shape, and composition, together with development of in situ surface science characterization tools, such as ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), has brought new opportunities to unravel the surface structure of working catalysts. Recent studies suggest that surface oxides on transition metal nanoparticles play an important role in determining the catalytic activity of CO oxidation. In this talk, I will outline the recent studies on the influence of surface oxides on Rh, Pt, Ru and Co nanoparticles on the catalytic activity of CO oxidation [1-3]. Transition metal nanoparticle model catalysts were synthesized in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) polymer capping agent and deposited onto a flat Si support as two-dimensional arrays using the Langmuir-Blodgett deposition technique. APXPS studies exhibited the reversible formation of surface oxides during oxidizing, reducing, and CO oxidation reaction [4]. General trend is that the smaller nanoparticles exhibit the thicker surface oxides, while the bigger ones have the thin oxide layers. Combined with the nature of surface oxides, this trend leads to the different size dependences of catalytic activity. Such in situ observations of metal nanoparticles are useful in identifying the active state of the catalysts during use and, hence, may allow for rational catalyst designs for practical applications. I will also show that the surface oxide can be engineered by using the simple surface treatment such as UV-ozone techniques, which results in changing the catalytic activity [5]. The results suggest an intriguing way to tune catalytic activity via engineering of the nanoscale surface oxide.

  • The catalysts composed of Pt, Pd and W as active-components, $Al_{2}O_{3}$ and $SiO_{2}$ as supports, were perpared on the honeycomb type substrate and characterized by BET, SEM, TGA, FT-IR and XRD for diesel emission control. CO, $C_{3}H_{6}$, and $SO_{2}$ oxidation was carried out over these catalysts in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor at the temperatures between 100-500.deg.C and reactant gas was composed of 10 vol.% $O_{2}$, 1 vol.% CO, 0.8 vol.% $C_{3}H_{6}$ and 88.2 vol.% $N_{2}$. It was found that under these experimental conditions, the CO, $C_{3}H_{6}$ oxidation activity of Pt-W catalyst was higher than that of any other prepared catalyst, and this catalyst had also a good inhibition effect on $SO_{2}$ oxidation. Also it was show that the influence of $SO_{2}$ on $Al_{2}O_{3}$ was more sever than that of $SO_{2}$ on $SiO_{2}$.

  • Recently, NiO films have been studied as a buffer layer to fabricate the superconductor with preferred orientation and as a diffusion barrier to prevent the reaction between superconductor and textured nickel substrate . We fabricated NiO films on textured Ni substrate by thermal oxidation with various variables of temperature, oxidation time, atmosphere, and cooling rate. We investigated the alignment of NiO films by XRD and pole figure and the microstructures by SEM. (200) <001> alignment of NiO film was observed at the oxidation condition of $1200^{\circ}C$ far 10min and slow cooling in O2 atmosphere. During the process in Ar atmosphere, we could also observe the thermal faceting which affects the alignment of NiO alms on Ni substrate.

  • Powdered infant formula is susceptible to oxidation in the presence of oxygen. Even though the product is usually packaged in nitrogen atmosphere, the oxygen ingress through the package layer may occur in case of flexible pouches and affects the oxidation of the product. $O_2$ barrier of the package is thus important variable to protect the product from oxidative deterioration. $O_2$ barrier property was investigated for aluminum-laminated small pillow packs of $3.5{\times}17.5cm$. Storage temperature and combination of primary and secondary packages were evaluated as variables affecting the barrier for conditions of empty pouch flushed with nitrogen. Apparent oxygen transmission rate of the primary package exposed to air was $2.32{\times}10^{-3}mL\;(STP)\;atm^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$ and its temperature dependence could be explained by activation energy of $28.5kJ\;mol^{-1}$ in Arrhenius relationship. The additional secondary package of nylon/PE film containing 20 primary packages was ineffective in modulating package $O_2$ transmission and was only marginally helpful when combined with oxygen scavenger. The same was true in suppressing the product oxidation when the primary package was filled with 14 g of the formula.

  • In this study, the current-voltage curves for metals were measured using cyclic voltammetry. The relationship between the electrochemical properties and surface states of metals were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In cyclic voltammetry, we used a 3-electrode system for the electrochemical measurements. The measurement was conducted at the condition that consists of the first reduction from the initial potential to -1350 mV, continuous oxidation to 1650 mV, and last reduction to the initial potential. The scan rates were 50, 100, 150 and 250 mV/s. The results show the C-V characteristics of metals to be for an irreversible process, which was caused by the oxidation current from cyclic voltammogram, when monoethanolamine (MEA) was used as a corrosion inhibitor. When we used MEA as a corrosion inhibitor, the diffusion coefficient was decreased as the concentration of electrolyte was increased. In the SEM images of copper, we observed an increase of surface corrosion at the increased electrolyte concentration. Addition of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ corrosion inhibitor MEA reduced the effect of corrosion prevention due to the relatively large diffusion coefficient at the electrolyte concentration of 0.1N.

  • Objective: The aim of this work was the characterization of the qualitative aspects of meat obtained from Teramana goats, an Italian indigenous breed of the Abruzzo region. Specifically, the study included a comparison with meat samples deriving from Saanen goat kids reared in the same environment and applying the same feeding protocol. Methods: Upon reaching about 7 months of age the animals were slaughtered and samples of muscle tissue were collected to be analyzed. Specifically, meat samples were subjected to evaluations of the physical parameters, including color and the meat ability to retain water, in addition to chemical evaluations that were focused to the determination of the total lipids amount, fatty acids composition, lipid oxidation, and volatile profile. Results: The meat samples obtained from the indigenous breed showed a less intense reddish color and no significant variations for the muscle tissue tendency to retain water, both regarding fresh and cooked meat. Several differences were instead observed in the fatty acid profile. The Teramana samples were richer in saturated fatty acids (p<0.01) and interestingly showed higher concentrations of rumenic acid (p<0.05), a conjugate of linoleic acid that has been associated with important health benefits for the consumers. Another important finding for these meat samples was the marked resistance to oxidative events, as evidenced by the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances-test (p<0.05) and by the characterization of the volatile profile that highlighted a strong reduction in the relative percentage of hexanal (p<0.05), commonly associated to lipid oxidation and the development of unpleasant aromatic notes. Conclusion: The collected data, therefore appeared useful for the valorization of the food product derived from the Teramana goat, although no sensory information has been collected to define the degree of acceptability by the consumers.

  • The enzymatic isolation of residual lignins obtained from spruce and beech pulps (obtained by sulfite, kraft, ASAM and soda/AQ/MeOH pulping processes) and their characterization was described in previous publications. Here, the residual lignins have been submitted to potassium permanganate oxidation (KMnO4 degradation), and 9 aromatic carboxylic acids (3 of them are dimeric) were identified after methylation with diazomethane by GC/MS. The analytical challenge during qantification by the internal standard methods was the partly high protein content of the samples, which resulted in elevated anisic acid yields in the degradation mixture of sulfite residual lignins. The results are compared with the KMnO4 degradation of the corresponding MWLs and discussed in terms of S/G ratios and degrees of condensation. The latter was calculated as a quotient between the aromatic carboxylic acids derived from condensed and non-condensed lignin structures. Typical degradation patterns for the various processes have been observed. Among other parameter, the relative compositions between iso-hemipinic acid (which is for condensation in pos. 5 of the aromatic ring) and meta-hemipinic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphthalic acid (both are for condensation in pos. 6 of the aromatic ring) was found to be process specific. Kraft and soda/AQ/MeOH residual lignins yielded higher amounts of iso-hemipinic acid. In contrast, the relative yields of meta-hemipinic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphthalic acid (the latter in beech lignins) are higher in sulfite and particularly in ASAM residual lignin. In case of beech residual lignins the amount of acids originated from non-condensed syringyl type lignin units was surprisingly high. The condensation degree of residual lignins was shown to be generally higher than that of MWLs. This was especially true for the G units. ASAM residual lignin exhibited very high S/G ratios and degrees of polymerization. Causality between condensation degree and total yield of degradation products was demonstrated.

  • In this study, NO oxidation reaction using $Mn/TiO_2$ catalysts was investigated. NO oxidation results revealed that the different trend was observed upon physicochemical properties of $TiO_2$ and interactions between Mn and $TiO_2$ support. $Mn/TiO_2(A)$ catalyst has a superior NO oxidation activity, which increased with decreased space velocity and increased Mn amounts from 10 to 30 wt%. The results indicated that the SCR activity could increase by the fast SCR reaction process using the $Mn/TiO_2(A)$ catalyst located in front of the SCR unit.
