Implications of High Temperature and Low Humidity on the Hatching in the Silkworm, Bombyx mori L. Under LD 12 : 12 Condition

  • The implications of temperature (25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity (RH; 60, 70 and $80\%$) on the hatching rhythmicity and hatching parameters (percentage and duration) were studied in the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. under natural photoperiod (LD 12 : 12). Disease free layings (DFLs) of two pure silkworm breeds, Pure Mysore (PM, a multivoltine breed) and $NB_4D_2$ (a bivoltine breed), and their hybrid, $PM{\times}NB_4D_2$ were introduced into the experimental conditions on the $3^{rd}$ day of oviposition till completion of hatching. The hatching rhythm was predominantly diurnal under all temperature and humidity conditions, with peaks just after 'lights-on' phase (6 hrs). Extreme temperature and humidity conditions did not alter the hatching rhythmicity, but prolonged the hatching durations, extending it to the next day, coupled with reduced hatching percentage in PM and $PM{\times}NB_4D_2{\cdot}In\;NB_4D_2$, on the other hand, hatching did not extend to the next day. Hatching percentage in this breed, however, reduced below the economic level under high temperature and low humidity conditions. The high temperature and low humidity together, though did not alter the rhythmicity, seems to exert synergetic effect on the hatching percentage and its duration in the silkworm, B. mori.

Correlation between Body Weight and Colony Development of the Bumblebee Queen, Bombus ignitus

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of body weight of queen on the developmental characteristics of foundation queens in the Bombus ignitus collected in Korean locality. Queens were classified into six groups based on their body weight (i.e., 0.4 g, 0.5 g, 0.6 g, 0.7 g, 0.8 g and 0.9 g). The average weight of 200 foundation queens collected was 0.657${\times}40.095 g and 0.6 g-class was most abundant (38 %) among six weight classes. The queen that had the heavy body weight showed the trends of higher rate of oviposition, colony foundation and progeny-queen production and shorter periods of preoviposition and colony foundation, suggesting the positive correlation between the body weight of queen and colony developmental characteristics. Also, the numbers of worker and progeny-queen emerged from the queen with heavy body weight were slightly higher than those with light body weight queen.

Ovulated female salamander (Hynobius leechii) respond to water currents

  • To determine whether or not the female Korean salamander, Hynobius leechii, responds to water currents and, if so, whether those responses depend on their reproductive conditions, we evaluated the responses of ovulated and oviposited females to 1-Hz water currents generated by a model salamander with and without the placement of a transparent water current blocker between the model and the test females. The ovulated females responded to water currents by turning their heads toward, approaching, and/or making physical contact with the model. When the water current blocker was in place, the number of salamanders that approached the model was reduced significantly. The approaching and touching responses of ovulated females were greater than those of oviposited females, whereas the other measurements evidenced no differences. None of the responses of the oviposited females to water currents was affected by the presence of the blocker. Our results indicate that female H. leechii responds to water currents via a mechanosensory system.

Influence of Thyroxine on the Economic Parameters of the Bivoltine Silkworm, Bombyx Mori L.

  • Thyroxine을 5, 10, 15$\mu$g/ml의 수준으로 이화성 누에 NB18 품종의 유충에 도말처리한 결과 유충, 견사선, 고치, 고치층 등의 무게가 증가되고 유충경과 일수는 단축되는 등, 누에의 실용형질이 개선됨을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 전반적으로 10-15$\mu$g/ml의 thyroxine 처리구에서 얻어졌고 5$\mu$g/ml처리구는 대조구와 유의차를 보이지 않았다. 화아율과 부화율은 thyroxine처리의 영향을 받지 않았고 유충경과일수는 단축되었다.

이화명충 (Chilo suppressalis W.)에 대한 벼품종 저항성에 관한 연구 (Studies on Varietal Resistance of Rice to Striped Rice Borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker)

  • 이화명충(Chilo suppressalis Walker)에 대한 벼 품종별 저항성을 알기 위하여 통일(수원 21교, 진흥, IR747, 수원 229호 등 58개 품종을 공시하여 시험을 하였다. 실내시험에서 유충기간은 품종간 대차없었다. 유충체중은 감수성 품종에서는 34.4mg이었으나 저항성 품종은 18.0mg이었으며 용화율도 저항성 품종에서 높았다. 산난선호성 시험에서는 수원 240호 천추락 등이 낮은 선호성을 보였고 포장조사에서는 Tetep, 망게스 찰 IR747등이 낮은 피해경률을 나타내었다.

벼줄점팔랑나비의 형태적 특징 및 생활사 (Morphological Characteristics and Life Cycle of Rice Skipper, Parnara guttata Bremer et Grey (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae))

  • 벼줄점팔랑나비(P. guttata)에 대한 형태적 특징과 생활사에 대한 조사를 2001년부터 2002년까지 수행하였다. 성충은 황갈색으로 체장은 암수 각각 17.4 mm, 16.2 mm이었고, 각각의 날개편길이는 35.2 mm, 30.6 mm이었다. 난은 핑크색으로 반구형이며, 유충은 유백색-황녹색으로 체장은 2.9-30.6 mm이고, 용은 회색으로 체장은 23.8-25.7mm이었다. 실온조건에서 난기간은 4.5일, 유충기간 30.2일, 그리고 용기간은 6.9일이었다. 또한 성충의 수명은 암컷이 10.1일이었고, 산란수는 205.5개이었다.

Artificial Habitat Creation of Luciola lateralis (Coleoptera: Lamphyridae) and Research of Breeding Technique for Festival at Hwadamsup, Korea

  • This study created the running water (Bandibooliwon) and lentic water (Sooryunwon) artificial habitats of Luciola lateralis in Hwadamsup, Gwangju-si, Gyunggi-do from April 2014 to February 2016. Through various habitat types, metapopulation was formed, and more sound population was induced to be maintained via interactions between habitats. We investigated coenosite at the habitat creation-target site, and 20 species in the lentic water site and 38 species in running water site were found. After releasing L. lateralis, we checked the status of settlement of L. lateralis larvae through traps and macroscopy, controlled the flow velocity of the habitats in line with the life cycle of L. lateralis (hatching, larva period, landing, pupation, copulation, and oviposition), and shaped gentle slope at water side, and planted moss. We artificially supplied melanian snails (Semisulcospira sp.), the food source, in the running water site and induced stable feeding. Also, We created artificial insectary, bred larvae stably in winter, and secured firefly population for a festival. Through night time observation, the time most suitable for a festival was confirmed to be from 20:30 to 22:00.

폴리드나바이러스와 새로운 해충방제 전략 (Polydnavirus and Its Novel Application to Insect Pest Control)

  • 폴리드나바이러스는 고치벌 및 맵시벌류에 공생하는 DNA 바이러스로 기주 염색체에 프로바이러스 형태로 존재한다. 이 바이러스의 복제는 기주 용발육시기에 난소받침 상피세포에서 시작되어 유리 바이러스 형태의 입자 구조를 이루게 된다. 바이러스 입자는 기주가 피기생체에 산란할 때 알과 함께 혈강으로 옮겨진다. 이 바이러스 게놈의 염기서열을 바탕으로 여러 폴리드나바이러스 유전자군이 동정되었으며, 이들의 생리적 기능도 알려지고 있다. 본 종설은 기생 생리적 견지에서 폴리드나바이러스 게놈을 특성화하고, 이를 토대로 생리 교란 유전자들을 응용할 수 있는 새로운 해충 방제 전략을 소개한다.

  • 경기도 시흥시 무지동 포장에 추청벼를 1989년 5월 25일 이앙하여 벼물바구미의 각 태별 발생소장을 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 시험포장내 육안 조사결과 월동성충의 발생 최성기는 5월 하순이었고, 신성충의 발생 최성기는 8월 상순이었다. 벼물바구미 월동성충의 산란시기는 5월 30일부터 6월 27일까지었고, 산란 최성기는 6월 상순이었다. 벼물바구미 유충은 6월 상순부터 8월 상순까지 발생하였고, 최성기는 7월 중순이었고, 번데기는 7월 상순부터 8월 하순가지 발생하였고, 최성기는 7월 하순이었다. 신성충의 최초 최성기는 8월 상순이었다. 공중포충망에 의한 월동성충의 유살최성기는 5월 중, 하순이었고 유아등에 의한 신성충의 유살 최성기는 7월 하순이었다.

Microarray Analysis of Genes Involved with Shell Strength in Layer Shell Gland at the Early Stage of Active Calcification

  • The objective of this study was to get a comprehensive understanding of how genes in chicken shell gland modulate eggshell strength at the early stage of active calcification. Four 32-week old of purebred Xianju hens with consistent high or low shell breakage strength were grouped into two pairs. Using Affymetrix Chicken Array, a whole-transcriptome analysis was performed on hen's shell gland at 9 h post oviposition. Gene ontology enrichment analysis for differentially expressed (DE) transcripts was performed using the web-based GOEAST, and the validation of DE-transcripts was tested by qRT-PCR. 1,195 DE-transcripts, corresponding to 941 unique genes were identified in hens with strong eggshell compared to weak shell hens. According to gene ontology annotations, there are 77 DE-transcripts encoding ion transporters and secreted extracellular matrix proteins, and at least 26 DE-transcripts related to carbohydrate metabolism or post-translation glycosylation modification; furthermore, there are 88 signaling DE-transcripts. GO term enrichment analysis suggests that some DE-transcripts mediate reproductive hormones or neurotransmitters to affect eggshell quality through a complex suite of biophysical processes. These results reveal some candidate genes involved with eggshell strength at the early stage of active calcification which may facilitate our understanding of regulating mechanisms of eggshell quality.
