  • We approximately obtain heights of cnoidal waves overtopping on a porous breakwater using both the one-layer Boussinesq equations (Vu et al., 2018) and the two-layer Boussinesq equations (Huynh et al., 2017). For cnoidal waves overtopping on a porous breakwater, we find through numerical experiments that the heights of cnoidal waves overtopping on a low-crested breakwater (obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations) are smaller than the heights of waves passing through a high-crested breakwater (obtained by the one-layer Boussinesq equations) and larger than the heights of waves passing through a submerged breakwater (obtained by the two-layer Boussinesq equations). As the cnoidal wave nonlinearity becomes smaller or the porous breakwater width becomes narrower, the heights of transmitting waves obtained by the one-layer and two-layer Boussinesq equations become closer to the height of overtopping waves obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations.

  • The large uprush could be occurred when the waves hit the coastal structure and this uprush by wave could make the overtopping. The downfall of the wave overtopping water over the structure brought about the vertical impact loads. The vertical impact loads should be evaluated in order to design the pavement behind the crown wall however these loads were still unclear. In this study, the hydraulic model tests for the downfall impact loads by wave overtopping were performed and the various conditions were applied to the tests. The effect of the incident wave condition, the freeboard, the armour crest height and the height of the parapet were investigated. The test results showed that the parapet on the crown wall could reduce the wave overtopping however the inclusion of parapet could lead to the increased downfall wave pressures behind the crown wall. The empirical formulae were proposed for evaluating the maximum downfall pressures behind the crown wall of rubble mound structure.

  • Wave overtopping rate is one of the most important design parameters for coastal structures. In this study, the physical model tests for measuring the wave overtopping have been conducted with the foreshore slope in front of the seawall. The bottom seabed for the coastal road area was fabricated at the wave flume for two areas in the East sea areas. The wave overtopping rate was measured for various water depths and wave conditions in each coastal area. In particular, the impulsive wave conditions were compared with the previous research and the similar trends of wave overtopping was observed. It could be known that the effect of foreshore slope was significant and should be concerned for applying theses formula like EurOtop.

  • In Korea, the hydraulic model tests for measuring the wave overtopping have been almost conducted with no bottom slope or single slope condition in Korea. In this study, the bottom seabed for the coastal road area was fabricated at the wave flume and the wave overtopping was measured. The overtopping rate was also measured with the numerical modelling by OLAFoam. The measuring data were compared with EurOtop manual. It could be known the the influence of the foreslope in front of the vertical wall was significant and the these effects should be concerned when designing the coastal structures. And also it could be known that OLAFoam could be used to predict the wave overtopping rate for the complex bottom topography.

  • The allowable mean overtopping discharge is used as a design parameter for coastal structures. The crest elevation of coastal structures should ensure the wave overtopping discharge within acceptable limits for structural safety and the safety of pedestrians, vehicles, operations, and so on. In this study, two-dimensional physical model tests on typical rubble-mound structure geometries were performed and the the mean wave overtopping discharges under various water depth and wave conditions were measrued. The various test conditions were applied to the tests with the change of the wave steepness, relative freeboard and relative wave height. An empirical formula from the experimental data was proposed to predict the mean wave overtopping volumes.

  • Overtopping discharge for sea dike having low mound and high wave wall (LMHW sea dike) is investigated with hydraulic experiments in this study. Vertical, Flare and Bullnose type wave walls are selected and Tetrapods (double layer) and Accropode (one layer) are adopted for armour layers of the front slope. The results of the hydraulic experiments are compared to the overtopping formulas for armoured rubble slopes and vertical sea dikes suggested by EurOtop Manual. Predicted overtopping discharges are underestimated as the roughness efficiency factors (γf) of armour blocks suggested by EurOtop are adopted when the overtopping formula for armoured rubble slopes sea dike is used. Meanwhile the predicted overtopping discharges agree well with the hydraulic experiments when the modified roughness efficiency factors redefined by multiplying efficiency factor of the heights of armoured crest berm and wave wall (γAR) are adopted. Return wall effects on a vertical wall (Kortenhaus et al., 2003; Pearson et al., 2004a) and the effects on a smooth dike slope (Van Doorslaer et al., 2015) in EurOtop Manual are investigated for Flare and Bullnose type wave walls. As a results of the comparison between experimental results and 2 formulas, return wall effect on a smooth dike was more valid for LMHW sea dike.

  • Specially shaped concrete blocks are used for the armor layer of rubble structure for breakers, seawalls, or other shore protection work. In this study, the hydraulic characteristics of the Modified-Tribar(MTB), which addresses the shortcomings of the Arch-Tribar, and the most widely used Tetrapod(TTP) in Korea are examined through hydraulic model tests. The MTB are much more stable than the TTP, as shown through the stability model tests under non-breaking and non-overtopping condition. The value of the stability coefficient(KD) was obtained at around 30. The model tests show that the TTP random two layers and MTB uniform 1.5 layers have similar effects, but the MTB one layer shows slightly low effects in dissipating wave energy. The TTP random two layer model is the most effective in reducing wave overtopping rate, under overtopping condition, while the MTB uniform one layer and the MTB uniform 1.5 layer models follow respectively.

  • The performance of a multi-level overtopping wave energy converter (OWEC) has been numerically and experimentally investigated in a two-dimensional wave tank in order to study the effects of opening width of additional reservoirs. The device is a fixed OWEC consisting of an inclined ramp together with several reservoirs at different levels. A particle-based numerical simulation utilizing the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is used to simulate the flow behavior around the OWEC. Additionally, an experimental model is also built and tested in a small wave flume in order to validate the numerical results. A comparison in energy captured performance between single-level and multi-level devices has been proposed using the hydraulic efficiency. The enhancement of power capture performance is accomplished by increasing an overtopping flow rate captured by the extra reservoirs. However, a noticeably large opening of the extra reservoirs can result in a reduction in the power efficiency. The overtopping flow behavior into the reservoirs is also presented and discussed. Moreover, the results of hydrodynamic performance are compared with a similar study, of which a similar tendency is achieved. Nevertheless, the LBM simulations consume less computational time in both pre-processing and calculating phases.

  • Coastlines are protected by breakwater structures against the erosion of sand or other materials along beaches due to wave action. This research examined the use of physical modeling to determine the effects of the tetrapod size and vertical walls of a rubble mound on the volume of wave overtopping under irregular wave conditions in coastal areas in Busan Yacht Harbor. In this analysis model, the structures were studied using irregular waves and the JONSWAP wave energy spectrum. To understand the effects of the tetrapod size and heights of the vertical wall, the study considered vertical walls of 0, 1.78, 6.83, and 9.33 cm with armor double layered material tetrapods of 8, 12, 16, and 20 tons. An extensive number of experiments covering a relatively large range of variables enabled a comprehensive discussion. First, in the presence of a short vertical wall, the water level played a key role in the overtopping discharge. In such circumstances, the values of the wave overtopping discharge decreased with increasing freeboard size. In the presence of a tall freeboard and middle, the value of the wave overtopping discharge was equally influenced by the vertical wall factor. Moreover, the tetrapod size decreased by an increase in the vertical wall factor, and relationship between them resulted in a short wall height. From an engineering point of view, considering a small water level may allow the choice of a shorter vertical wall, which would ultimately provide a more economical design.

  • A wave overtopping rate from a sea dike of various toe depths is formulated based on a weir model in an unidirectional flow. To evaluate the wave overtopping rate from a seadike on an artificial reef by the weir model, a numerical procedure for predicting wave transformations including the effect of forced wave breaking on the reef is constructed. After confirming the applicability of the model by experiments with regular and irregular waves, the effect of artificial reef on wave overtopping is discussed. So-called individual wave analysis method is shown to be applicable to the wave overtopping caused by irregular waves.
