  • The causes of indebted overspending were investigated by examining household expenditure patterns using the data from the 2002 Family Expenditure Survey. The five major expenditure categories were identified by factor analysis, and the six types of indebted overspending were clustered. About 28% of the indebted overspending was done out of necessity, and food, utilities, housing, and health care accounted for about 42% of the household expenditure. Luxury spending accounted for about 25% of the overspending by indebted households who spent about 24% of the household expenditure on clothing, entertainment, and private education. Cars (22%) and education (20%) were found to be other major causes of indebted overspending. Paying off debt and durable purchases were identified as the major causes of indebted overspending, but had a low frequency. Finally, the financial status of the four major types of indebted overspending households was evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the overspending in Korean urban households. Data for this study were from the 2001 Household Income and Expenditure Survey and consisted of a sample of 3,250 households. The mean of the spending to income ratio was 1.02 and 37% of the households spent more than 100% of their taken-home income. Multiple logistic regression was used to investigate the determinants of overspending. Education, job, household type, the number of earners, the number of children, life cycle, location, and home ownership were significant variables which influence the overspending. The results of this study is useful for financial planners and counselors to make a guide line for overspenders.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply ratio analysis, which indicates the rate of income to total expenditure, to examine wage-earners' overspending in Korea. We use the Family Income and Expenditure Survey produced by National Statistical Office Republic of Korea and total sample size is 40,691 including households complete income reported. Through the t-test, among 17 expenditure categories, overspenders is likely to spend more on housing, apparel, medical, education, and leisure expenditures more than non-overspenders significantly. Interestingly, overspenders have more income, but less financial assets than non-overspenders. To analyze the effect of socio-demographic variables on overspending, ordinary least square is utilized. The results shows that the more educated, larger family size, and older consumer tend to overspend. The results of study are leaded into two aspects. First, overspending can be solved by consumer education with efficient financial management practice. Second, overspending may be not solved unless policies in various ways enhance the overall quality of living to lessen each household's budget constraints.

  • The determinansts of expenditure spent on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure were investigated using the 2002 House Income and Expenditure Survey by the Korea National Statistical Office, which consisted of a sample of 918 elderly households. There were significant differences in expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure between elderly and nonelderly households. Age, education, overspending were significant factors that determine the expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure. Overspending is the most important factor related to expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure.

  • This study was to examine whether the hedonic and utilitarian shopping values were expressed in shopping experience among the undergraduates and how the consumers with different shopping values vary in the perception of credit cards' benefit and risk. The 215 undergraduates in Seoul were surveyed. The results indicated that undergraduates were divided into hedonic shoppers and utilitarian shoppers according to their shopping value and that the perception of credit cards' benefit and risk was explained by the four factors including the increased cost, the removing the immediate need for money, the additional service and benefits, and the overspending and credit crime. The overspending and credit crime as one of the risk factors was affected by the types of shopping values.

  • Micropayment is an electronic payment system for small value transaction. It needs to use a little amount of resources, such as communication and computation due to its small value. In other words, the processing cost for the micropayment must be less than the value of the payment. Several kinds of transactions are suitable for micropayment, eg. the purchasing of train tickets or digital newspapers. Since micropayment systems are designed for small-amount payment the key factor for any micropayment system design is believed to be the minimization of resource consumption without compromising the standard security. In this paper, we propose an adaptive agent approach to credit-based micropayment system, which employs the concept of dynamic balancing between the resource consumption and the risk in the system. As a result of the dynamic balancing, our system not only solves the problem of global overspending but also uses fewer amount of resources than existing approaches. Our approach limits the amount of money spent by untrusted customers to all merchants. Thus, our approach provides a boundary of the global overspending. In addition, for trusted customers, our approach requires less scale of communication for verifying authorizations than all existing approaches.

  • Determinants of consumption patterns of elderly couple and elderly single were investigated using the 1996 National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure by National Statistical Office. There were large differences in consumption patterns between the elderly couple and single in terms of monthly expenditures and average budget shares of individual consumption items. Consumption functions of individual items were estimated using double-log function. Major determinants of consumption functions were income, overspending behavior, educational level of householder, and net worth for both groups, householder's job status and city residence mainly for elderly couple, and age of householder mainly for elderly single. In addition, income elasticity of elderly households was larger than net worth elasticity for all consumption items.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of young debtors at risk of repayment problems. A cumulative logistic model is used in order to examine the effects of explanatory variables on the probability for young adults to pay off debt obligations. The following conclusions can be drawn from the results. First, the high indebtedness of young debtors increases the probability of payment delinquency whereas high income by young debtors decreases the probability. Second, financial emergencies that young debtors experienced and payment delinquency are positively related. Finally, financial resources for emergency needs reduced the probability of being delinquency on payment of household debt.

  • Observation of the effects of a handset subsidy on the mobile telecommunication industry has revealed two different aspects. The activation of various mobile services and the handset market, has led to the rapid acceleration of the related technological development, which is a desirable result, while rising prices and the overspending of related resources are undesirable. A great deal of research has been conducted to assess both desirable and undesirable factors using qualitative methods. However, quantitative studies into the effects of a handset subsidy are rare. In this study, we consider the positive and negative effects on consumer welfare of a change in demand and prices brought about by a handset subsidy. Then, we quantitatively compare the positive and negative effects and analyze their direct effects on consumer welfare.
