Review on the Educational Possibilities of The Virtual Museum as Online Learning Environments (온라인 학습환경으로서 가상박물관(Virtual Museum)의 가능성에 대한 탐구)

  • As digital technologies have strongly impacted the whole social aspects, so museum recently emerging as an alternative or supplementary learning environment to school, after active adoption to the technologies, gave birth to museum websites called 'Virtual Museums' which, then, result in enhancing the educational roles and functions of physical museum. In this context, this study aimed to review the process of how virtual museum has been developed in terms of its educational roles and characteristics in accordance with the evolutionary development of web. Especially, the analysis of the status quo of the current virtual museums in both Korea and overseas presented specific aspects of the educational elements and roles embedded in virtual museum which have been emphasized in many related research and studies. The categories of the roles of the virtual museum, as a result, were classified into 'digital archive,' 'learning resources,' and 'communigy,' each of which were, then, further elaborated for its individual educational uses. Eventually this study purposed to expand the public awareness and knowledge of virtual museum as the alternative online learning environments needed in the 21st century.

Overseas exhibition and organization of Korean exhibition room in foreign museum. (해외 전시와 외국 박물관의 한국실 설치-그리스 특별 전시 사례를 중심으로)

  • Among many functions of the museum, the educational function is being emphasized. Museums should actively expand their scope of action through special exhibits or various educational activities. It is through exhibits that museums prove their reason for existence and raise calls for support. Through such activities, university museums should demonstrate the role and reason of existence of a museum inside a university to the members of the university. They should carry out various activities to raise the presence of the museum in the university. That may be the way for university museums, which face many difficulties in reality, to find their breakthrough. Especially in a situation of a low-budget, holding overseas exhibition may be a good opportunity to display the excellence of the Korean culture and, at the same time, publicize the school and the museum. Also, through such overseas exhibition, benchmarking of facilities and activities of advanced museums can be made and networks can be set up with museums around the world. This paper introduces the planning and progressing procedures of exhibitions abroad through the experiences of the Korea University Museum. I sincerely hope that it will contribute to the hereafter development of university museums. Aside from such overseas exhibition, the Korea Foundation has been supporting prestigious foreign museums to establish a Korean exhibition room in order to form a perpetual space to systematically introduce Korean culture and art to foreign audience. Thus far, the National Museum of Korea has stood in the forefront in lending relics to Korean exhibition rooms abroad. I believe it would be a worthwhile activity for the Korea Association of University Museums, which has approximately 100 institutions as its members, to actively participate in the establishment of Korean exhibitions rooms of foreign museums for the development of university museums. Participating in the establishment of Korean exhibition rooms is attractive as it will lead to a constant exchange with foreign museums instead of a one-time exchange. Localization and globalization, which became a big issue about ten years ago, is reality from which university museums cannot be free. In such reality, it is time for university museums to look back on whether they are ready to make their way forward in this era called the century of culture.

(A) Study on the Formative Characteristics of Embroidery Panels of Hwarot at the Victoria and Albert Museum (빅토리아 앨버트 박물관 소장 활옷의 조형성 연구)

  • This research examines embroidery panels of Hwarot belonging to the Victoria and Albert Museum (the V&A). There are a total of seven objects and are all disassembled into clothe pieces. They were classified into two groups according to their acquisition year. One group, four objects, was acquired by the Museum in 1920. Considering their materials, embroidery threads, techniques and formative characteristics of patterns, it can be assumed that the objects formed an original dress, Hwarot. Although they look very similar to the embroidery patterns of Hwarot belonging to National Folklore Museum of Korea, they are more finely embroidered with very thin embroidery thread that uses the Jarisu technique. There are some differences in used embroidery threads and embroidery skills between Hwarot artifacts of the National Museum of Korea and the V&A. The embroidery of the National Museum of Korea used thicker threads and longer (approximately 0.7cm) Jarisu stitch techniques. With these details, they would have been made in different time periods. Comparison of the V&A and Changdeok Palace' Hwarot objects show that their patterns' motifs are almost similar but the pattern units, expressions and embroidery techniques are different. Regarding the colors of their patterns, it is noticeable that the peonies are generally expressed in reddish and the lotus patterns are expressed in either bluish or purplish color. It seems that they are contrasted with red-colored flowers and show harmony between yin and yang symbolically. Three artifacts of another group were acquired in 1925. Two of them show patterns almost the same as those of the sleeves of Hwarot (no.33156, no.33158) in Chicago Field Museum collection. The pattern of the remaining object is very similar to Hansam of Hwarot (no.33158).

An Evaluation of Applying Knowledge Base to Academic Information Service

  • Through a series of precise text handling processes, including automatic extraction of information from documents with knowledge from various fields, recognition of entity names, detection of core topics, analysis of the relations between the extracted information and topics, and automatic inference of new knowledge, the most efficient knowledge base of the relevant field is created, and plans to apply these to the information knowledge management and service are the core requirements necessary for intellectualization of information. In this paper, the knowledge base, which is a necessary core resource and comprehensive technology for intellectualization of science and technology information, is described and the usability of academic information services using it is evaluated. The knowledge base proposed in this article is an amalgamation of information expression and knowledge storage, composed of identifying code systems from terms to documents, by integrating terminologies, word intelligent networks, topic networks, classification systems, and authority data.

A Preliminary Study on the Multiple Mapping Structure of Classification Systems for Heterogeneous Databases

  • While science and technology information service portals and heterogeneous databases produced in Korea and other countries are integrated, methods of connecting the unique classification systems applied to each database have been studied. Results of technologists' research, such as, journal articles, patent specifications, and research reports, are organically related to each other. In this case, if the most basic and meaningful classification systems are not connected, it is difficult to achieve interoperability of the information and thus not easy to implement meaningful science technology information services through information convergence. This study aims to address the aforementioned issue by analyzing mapping systems between classification systems in order to design a structure to connect a variety of classification systems used in the academic information database of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, which provides science and technology information portal service. This study also aims to design a mapping system for the classification systems to be applied to actual science and technology information services and information management systems.

Conservation Treatment of a Modern-period Folding Screen with Embroidered Character Design (근대 자수백수백복자도 병풍(百壽百福 字圖屛風)의 보존 - 미국 포틀랜드박물관 소장 《자수백수백복자》10폭 병풍을 중심으로 -)

  • This study presents the results of conservation treatment and research on a folding screen with embroidered classical Chinese characters "壽" (su) for longevity and "福" (bok) for good fortune in various scripts. The project was conducted as part of the program for supporting overseas Korean galleries in 2016. The present mounting of this ten-panel folding screen was difficult to identify as it had previously been remounted in a modern style. However, clues to the original mounting were discovered during the conservation process. It was revealed that the folding screen was decorated with colors frequently used in Joseon-period, such as teal silk at the top and bottom of each panel and a violet frame. These features provided clues to the original mounting of the folding screen, of which only a few elements have survived. Since this study analyzes only case of one folding screen, further research is required to reveal the method of mounting folding screens applied during this same period.

Use of Visible Storage for Display and Conservation Treatment of a Large-sized Jar Coffin (대형 옹관의 보존처리 과정과 이를 활용한 개방형 수장고의 운용)

  • This paper describes the restoration and display of a large jar coffin at the Naju National Museum. Excavated from Tomb No. 3 at Bokam-ri, Naju, the large jar is 194 cm in height and its rim diameter is 108 cm. The jar had been broken into approximately forty fragments prior to its restoration, and a supporting structure was installed to ensure the safety of the relic during the restoration process. The restoration was conducted inside a visible storage for large jar coffins for approximately three weeks from February 5 to February 27, 2018. Over two weeks during this period, the restoration efforts inside the storage were visible to the public in the permanent exhibition space so that visitors could observe the process in person. This was planned to help visitors understand and arouse their interest in large-sized relics such as jar coffins and the restoration process. This study also investigates the practices of overseas institutions in order to suggest plans for raising public awareness of conservation treatment at conservation science centers.

Study on Hwal-ot at the Field Museum of Chicago (시카고 필드 박물관 소장 활옷에 대한 연구)

  • Hwai-ot is the embroidered bridal red robe that represents the beauty of Korean traditional costume. As there are very few remains of Hwal-ot that are pass to date, the study on Hwal-ot has been limited to the Hwal-ot of Princess Bok-on and some civilian Hwal-ot relics. In this study, I tried to perform a positive research on Hwal-ot of the latter Joseon dynasty by inspecting these Hwal-ot remains housed at Field Museum of Chicago. This study has its meaning in the fact that it tried to illuminate diverse features and beautiful formation of the Korean traditional Hwal-ot by comparing those possessed by overseas museums with the ones in Korean museums. Number 33157 Hwal-ot has very unique pattern with both embroidery and gold imprint decorated. It has less embroidery than the Princess Bok-on's Hwal-ot but has much diverse gold imprint patterns. Other four Hwal-ot remains, other than the number 33157, have similar characteristics with the Hwal-ot housed at Changdeok-gung, whose reproductions are also kept at Dankook University Muesum and Ewha Womans University Museum, which makes it possible to deduce that they have typical characteristics of the Royal Hwal-ot of the latter Joseon dynasty.

The Appearance and Its Development of Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain (베트남 청화백자의 출현과 전개)

  • Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain is famous for its unique form and colour of cobalt. It is said to be producted from the late of 14th Century to now. Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 14th Century has a Mum design similar to that of Blue and White Porcelain of 14th Century in China. The Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 15th, 16th Century was trade Ceramics which were shipped overseas. A base, having a dated inscription corresponding to 1450 and kept in the Topkapi Saray Museum is the best example of Vietnamese trade ceramics. The Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 15th, 16th Century was a substitute for Chinese trade ceramics in these times when China had a police of the closure of China borderers to sea trade to protect China and was exported to the western Asia and the Southeast Asia. In recent, Fustat relics of Egypt was excavated the Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain. It means that Vietnamese Ceramics of 15th, 16th Century was substitute for Chinese trade ceramics. In addition, Thai Blue celadon of 15th Century was exported to the western Asia as like Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain. But when a police of the closure of China borderers to sea trade in China was stopped in the late of 16th Century and Chinese Ceramics were reborn in the same time, the Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain was declined as trade items.
