  • Overlay multicast is proposed as an alternative approach for providing muticast services. A logical infrastructure is built to form an overlay network on top of the physical layer. In this paper, we propose an efficient overlay multicast in wireless ad hoc networks. The overlay multicast tree adapts to the changes in underlying networks. The multicast tree adjusted according to the local member information.

Resilient Routing Overlay Network Construction with Super-Relay Nodes

  • Overlay routing has emerged as a promising approach to improve reliability and efficiency of the Internet. The key to overlay routing is the placement and maintenance of the overlay infrastructure, especially, the selection and placement of key relay nodes. Spurred by the observation that a few relay nodes with high betweenness centrality can provide more optimal routes for a large number of node pairs, we propose a resilient routing overlay network construction method by introducing Super-Relay nodes. In detail, we present the K-Minimum Spanning Tree with Super-Relay nodes algorithm (SR-KMST), in which we focus on the selection and connection of Super-Relay nodes to optimize the routing quality in a resilient and scalable manner. For the simultaneous path failures between the default physical path and the overlay backup path, we also address the selection of recovery path. The objective is to select a proper one-hop recovery path with minimum cost in path probing and measurement. Simulations based on a real ISP network and a synthetic Internet topology show that our approach can provide high-quality overlay routing service, while achieving good robustness.

Framework for End-to-End Optimal Traffic Control Law Based on Overlay Mesh

  • Along with the development of network, more and more functions and services are required by users, while traditional network fails to support all of them. Although overlay is a good solution to some demands, using them in an efficient, scalable way is still a problem. This paper puts forward a framework on how to construct an efficient, scalable overlay mesh in real network. Main differences between other overlays and ours are that our overlay mesh processes some nice features including class-of-service(CoS) and traffic engineering(TE). It embeds the end-to-end optimal traffic control law which can distribute traffic in an optimal way. Then, an example is given for better understanding the framework. Particularly, besides good scalability, and failure recovery, it possesses other characteristics such as routing simplicity, self-organization, etc. In such an overlay mesh, an applicable source routing scheme called hierarchical source routing is used to transmit data packet based on UDP protocol. Finally, a guideline derived from a number of simulations is proposed on how to set various parameters in this overlay mesh, which makes the overlay more efficient.

  • 오늘날 인터넷 및 IP 기술의 발달에 의해 다양한 통신 형태와 응용 서비스가 제공되고 있다. 인터넷 기반 서비스 제공을 위한 기술로 각광을 받고 있는 P2PSIP overlay 기술과 NGN의 진화에서 채용된 IMS 네트워크와의 상호접속을 통해 두 기술의 서비스 영역 확대를 기대할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 P2PSIP overlay와 IMS 네트워크를 상호접속 시켜 서비스의 확장이 가능한 방법에 대해 연구한다. 특히 상호접속 방법으로 가입자 가입 유형별로 적용이 가능한 구조를 나타내고, 세션 설정 시간 관점에서 트래픽 모델과 지연 특성을 분석한다. 그리고 제안 방식의 특성 분석 및 평가를 위해 시뮬레이션 모델을 통해 세션 설정지연 시간을 분석하고, 가입자 가입 유형별 적절한 상호접속 방법을 제시한다. 그 결과 P2PSIP overlay 전용 가입자인 경우는 gateway AS를 통해 IMS에 접속하는 구조 그리고 P2PSIP overlay와 IMS 네트워크에 동시 가입한 경우는 I-CSCF을 통해 접속하는 구조가 세션 설정 지연 특성 관점에서 가장 우수함을 분명히 한다.

Load-Balanced One-hop Overlay Multipath Routing with Path Diversity

  • Overlay routing has emerged as a promising approach to improve reliability and efficiency of the Internet. For one-hop overlay source routing, when a given primary path suffers from the link failure or performance degradation, the source can reroute the traffic to the destination via a strategically placed relay node. However, the over-heavy traffic passing through the same relay node may cause frequent package loss and delay jitter, which can degrade the throughput and utilization of the network. To overcome this problem, we propose a Load-Balanced One-hop Overlay Multipath Routing algorithm (LB-OOMR), in which the traffic is first split at the source edge nodes and then transmitted along multiple one-hop overlay paths. In order to determine an optimal split ratio for the traffic, we formulate the problem as a linear programming (LP) formulation, whose goal is to minimize the worse-case network congestion ratio. Since it is difficult to solve this LP problem in practical time, a heuristic algorithm is introduced to select the relay nodes for constructing the disjoint one-hop overlay paths, which greatly reduces the computational complexity of the LP algorithm. Simulations based on a real ISP network and a synthetic Internet topology show that our proposed algorithm can reduce the network congestion ratio dramatically, and achieve high-quality overlay routing service.

  • 오버레이 네트워크는 하부계층의 네트워크에 변화가 있어도 응용계층의 트리에는 변화를 줄 필요가 없으며, 오버레이 네트워크가 멀티캐스트를 지원하지 않는 노드들이 존재하는 환경에서도 만들어질 수 있게 해준다. 오버레이 프로토콜은 동적인 그룹을 모니터링하는 반면, 하부계층의 유니캐스트 프로토콜은 동적인 네트워크를 책임짐으로써, 동적인 환경에서도 제어 오버헤드를 줄이고, 프로토콜의 오퍼레이션을 안정적으로 만든다. 그러나, 만약 오버레이 멀티캐스트 프로토콜이 구성원의 위치정보를 모른다면, 효율적인 멀티캐스트 트리를 만드는 것은 매우 어렵다. 그래서, 위치정보를 이용한 계층적 오버레이 멀티캐스트 구조(HOMA: Hierarchical Overlay Multicast Architecture)를 본 논문에서 제안한다. 제안된 구조는 멀티캐스트에 참여하는 호스트들만으로 정적인 지역을 기반으로 동적 그룹을 만들어서 상위 계층에서는 그룹을 대표하는 호스트들 간의 오버레이 멀티캐스트 망을 형성하근 하위 계층에서는 지역에 속한 멀티캐스트 호스트들 간의 멀티캐스트를 지원하는 응용 계층의 2-계층 오버레이 멀티캐스트이다. 이것은 GPS를 사용하고, 지리적 영역을 활용하며 노드의 이동에 크게 영향을 받지 않는 지역 기반의 상위 계층의 오버레이 멀티캐스트 트리를 보여준다. 시뮬레이션 결과는 멀티캐스트의 효율성의 문제를 효과적으로 해결하였음을 보여준다.

Adaptive Call Admission Control Scheme for Heterogeneous Overlay Networks

  • Any future heterogeneous overlay network system must be able to support ubiquitous access across multiple wireless networks. To coordinate these diverse network environments, one challenging task is a call admission decision among different types of network. In this paper, we propose a new call admission control scheme to provide quality of service (QoS) while ensuring system efficiency. Based on the interplay between network structure and dynamics, we estimate the network's QoS level and adjust the service price adaptively with the aim of maximizing the network performance. A simulation shows that the proposed scheme can approximate an optimized solution while ensuring a well-balanced network performance in widely different network environments.

MANET에서의 지리 정보를 이용한 오버레이 멀티캐스트 (Overlay Multicast using Geographic Information in MANET)

  • 이동 애드혹 네트워크(Mobile Ad Hoc Network; MANET)에서의 오버레이 멀티캐스트 기법에 대한 최근의 연구들은 동적으로 변화하는 MANET의 네트워크 토폴로지 정보를 유지하기 위해 심각한 오버헤드를 야기하는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 그룹 멤버들의 지리 정보를 이용하는 영역(region) 기반의 새로운 오버레이 멀티캐스트 기법인 ROME(Region-based Overlay Multicast in MANET)을 제안한다. ROME에서는 토폴로지를 작은 영역들로 나누고 그룹 멤버들의 위치 갱신 범위를 하나의 영역으로 한정함으로써 위치 정보 유지와 관련된 오버헤드를 줄인다. ROME은 데이터 패킷의 목적지로서 해당 영역의 멤버들의 주소 목록이 아닌 목적지 영역의 중심점(center point)의 좌표를 사용함으로써 확장성을 제공한다. 시뮬레이션을 통해 ROME이 패킷 오버헤드 측면에서 다른 기법에 비해 성능이 우수함을 보인다.

OTP: An Overlay Transport Protocol for End-to-end Congestion and Flow Control in Overlay Networks

  • The problem of architecting a reliable transport system across an overlay network using split TCP connections as the transport primitive is mainly considered. The considered overlay network uses the application-level switch in each intermediate host. We first argue that natural designs based on store-and-forward principles that are maintained by split TCP connections of hop-by-hop approaches. These approaches in overlay networks do not concern end-to-end TCP semantics. Then, a new transport protocol-Overlay Transport Protocol (OTP)-that manages the end-to-end connection and is responsible for the congestion/flow control between source host and destination host is proposed. The proposed network model for the congestion and flow control mechanisms uses a new window size-Ownd-and a new timer in the source host and destination host. We validate our analytical findings and evaluate the performance of our OTP using a prototype implementation via simulation.

An MPEG-4 Compliant Interactive Multimedia Streaming Platform Using Overlay Networks

  • This paper presents a multimedia streaming platform for efficiently transmitting MPEG-4 content over IP networks. The platform includes an MPEG-4 compliant streaming server and client, supporting object-based representation of multimedia scenes, interactivity, and advanced encoding profiles defined by the ISO standard. For scalability purposes, we employ an application-layer multicast scheme for media transmission using overlay networks. The overlay network, governed by the central entity of the network distribution manager, is dynamically deployed according to a set of pre-defined criteria. The overlay network supports both broadcast delivery and video-on-demand content. The multimedia streaming platform is standards-compliant and utilizes widespread multimedia protocols such as MPEG-4, real-time transport protocol, real-time transport control protocol, and real-time streaming protocol. The design of the overlay network was architected with the goal of transparency to both the streaming server and the client. As a result, many commercial implementations that use industry-standard protocols can be plugged into the architecture relatively painlessly and can enjoy the benefits of the platform.
