  • Immersive space is a new type of space, which is converged with other domains and expressed in various ways and here, a mutual exchange between space and participants is realized with active intervention of participants. The purpose of this study is to examine boundary changes and characteristics in virtual space and reality or inside and outside, focusing on immersive space. For this study, a case analysis was conducted, based on the key words regarding flow experience and boundary characteristics in immersive space. The boundary characteristics extracted are as follow. First, while immersive space is overlapped in many different ways, the boundary in space gradually changes and one unique and convergent space is formed. Also, a combination of overlap is made with internal and external physical force and a convergent boundary is created. Second, forms are mixed in diverse ways and an unrealistic boundary space is revealed. For new experience, it has familiar, but new experiential characteristics and also shows an expanded boundary by the medium of different domains. Third, a simultaneous space, based on variability of time and space, has an ambiguous boundary due to a meaningless physical boundary of space and changing into a space region constantly, it becomes an unlimited variable space. Fourth, a linear expansion-based emergent space has nonlinearity, which creates a meaningless boundary, recognized as an irregular, dynamic and transformative space and expands to a creative space. In conclusion, it is anticipated that based on diverse characteristics found in immersive space, this study would give unlimited inspiration to many design fields and art creation activities and contribute to a further development through continued research on immersive space.

  • As the paradigm of science education has been changing from offering scientific knowledge to 'Public Understanding', ways of communication through visual tools in science education has become increasingly important. In this study, I considered 'Pataphor' as a visual tool for scientific communication, and suggested its functions and forms. By studying the notion of pataphor, which was used an overlapped image of virtual reality and reality in literature, in the perspective of contents design, I defined 'Pataphor' as a visual way of deducing or making the metaphysical similarity with the reality based on scientific imagination. Also, I deduced the functions of pataphor as a visual mediacy and suggested its types as "Pataphor of duplicated reality", "Pataphor of reflected reality", "Pataphor of metamorphosed reality", and "Pataphor of artificial reality". Through this study, it was found to be necessary to study in detail the ways to use pataphor depending on contents producing media's and learners' awareness process of contents so there will be a follow-up study on the ways to use pataphor.

  • The movie, X-men, develops the narrative with metamorphosis as the main motif making visual effects of characters and background. The objective of this study is to suggest that the metamorphosis motif can be materialized based on the virtuality of "pataphysics" as one of the genre characteristics of superhero movies and the newly materialized virtuality can be aesthetic characteristics of metamorphosis motif movies. With the virtuality that has its own characteristics with metaphorical symbols such as satire on an absurd society out of existing traditions, pataphysics started in mid-twentieth century and has had an impact on art movements of dadaism, surrealism, pop art, and postmodernism. Analyzing the characteristics of pataphysics which were shown in these artworks, we applied it to metamorphosis scenes of the movie. As a result, we found out that it visualized the shape and aspect of inner and outer strength of a superhero with aesthetic characteristics of metamorphosis scenes and it realized the presence, hybridity, and ex-formal properties of pataphysics consisting of overlapped virtual and physical reality, with technical virtuality.

  • This paper presents a hole-filling method using extrapolated spatio-temporal background information to obtain a synthesized view. A new temporal background model using non-overlapped patch based background codebook is introduced to extrapolate temporal background information In addition, a depth-map driven spatial local background estimation is addressed to define spatial background constraints that represent the lower and upper bounds of a background candidate. Background holes are filled by comparing the similarities between the temporal background information and the spatial background constraints. Additionally, a depth map-based ghost removal filter is described to solve the problem of the non-fit between a color image and the corresponding depth map of a virtual view after 3-D warping. Finally, an inpainting is applied to fill in the remaining holes with the priority function that includes a new depth term. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method led to results that promised subjective and objective improvement over the state-of-the-art methods.

  • In the roaming case, the cost of using the visited network is larger than that of home network. So, if a mobile terminal is connected to the visited network, even though it actually came back to the home network, the user may unduly pay for communication. Such a problem frequently occurs when many networks are overlapped in the same region, as shown in the case of Poland. In this paper, we propose a network search algorithm to support the fast comeback to home network in the roaming environment. In the proposed scheme, which is based on the 3GPP specification, the mobile terminal tries to search the home network by using a database of network information, as fast as possible. For performance evaluation, we construct a virtual testbed with real terminal and network equipment to emulate the service providers in Poland. From the experimental results, we can see that the proposed scheme can reduce the time of comeback to the home network by 3~60 minutes, compared the existing 3GPP scheme.

  • CCTV-applied monitoring is an effective measure to suppress potential crimes and record objective relationship; however, there is no methodology that can quantitatively compare and assess the afore-mentioned effects. Thus, this study intended to construct the methodology and analysis application that can measure the changes in the space-corresponding performance of CCTVs depending on installation measures by using 3-dimenstional virtual simulation technology. For analysis, the raster-based Isovist theory was 3-dimensionally expanded and the amount of incident sight line to each point was accumulated. At the same time, the amount of overlapped monitoring in the CCTV cameras that were connected to each measurement node was accumulated for cross-analysis. By applying the examples and analyzing the results, it was possible to construct an analysis application in use of collision detection model and quantify the changes of monitoring performance depending on positioning alternative of the cameras. Moreover, it enabled intuitive review and supplementation by reproducing visible shadow areas in a graph.

  • In order to effectively distribute the resources, it is very critical to understand the status or progress of construction site quickly and accurately. Augmented Reality (AR) can provide this situation with information which is convenient and intuitive. Conventional implementation of AR in outdoor or construction site condition requires additional sensors or markers to track the position and direction of camera. This research is aimed to develop the technologies which can be utilized in gathering the information of constructing or constructed buildings and structures. The AR technique that does not require additional devices except for the camera was implemented to simplify the system and improve utility in inaccessible area. In order to do so, the position of camera's perspective center and direction of camera was estimated using exterior orientation techniques. And 3D drawing model of building was projected and overlapped using this information. The result shows that by using this technique, the virtual drawing image was registered on real image with few pixels of error. The technique and procedure introduced in this paper simplifies the hardware organization of AR system that makes it easier for the AR technology to be utilized with ease in construction site. Moreover, this technique will help the AR to be utilized even in inaccessible areas. In addition to this, it is expected that combining this technique and 4D CAD technology can provide the project manager with more intuitive and comprehensive information that simplifies the monitoring work of construction progress and planning.

  • In prostate IMRT planning, the planning target volume (PTV), extended from a clinical target volume (CTV), often contains an overlap air volume from the rectum, which poses a problem inoptimization and prescription. This study was aimed to establish a planning method for such a case. There can be three options in which volume should be considered the target during optimization process; PTV including the air volume of air density ('airOpt'), PTV including the air volume of density value one, mimicking the tissue material ('density1Opt'), and PTV excluding the air volume ('noAirOpt'). Using 10 MV photon beams, seven field IMRT plans for each target were created with the same parameter condition. For these three cases, DVHs for the PTV, bladder and the rectum were compared. Also, the dose coverage for the CTV and the shifted CTV were evaluated in which the shifted CTV was a copied and translated virtual CTV toward the rectum inside the PTV, thus occupying the initial position of the overlap air volume, simulating the worst condition for the dose coverage in the target. Among the three options, only density1Opt plan gave clinically acceptable result in terms of target coverage and maximum dose. The airOpt plan gave exceedingly higher dose and excessive dose coverage for the target volume whereas noAirOpt plan gave underdose for the shifted CTV. Therefore, for prostate IMRT plan, having an air region in the PTV, density modification of the included air to the value of one, is suggested, prior to optimization and prescription for the PTV. This idea can be equally applied to any cases including the head and neck cancer with the PTV having the overlapped air region. Further study is being under process.
