  • Purpose: To investigate the effects of tissue inhomogeneity corrections on the dose delivered to prostate cancer patients treated with Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Methods and Materials: For five prostate cancer patients, IMRT treatment plans were generated using 6 MV or 10 MV X-rays. In each plan, seven equally spaced ports of photon beams were directed to the isocenter, neglecting the tissue heterogeneity in the body. The dose at the isocenter, mean dose, maximum dose, minimum dose and volume that received more than 95% of the isocenter dose in the planning target volume ( $V_{p>95%}$) were measured. The maximum doses to the rectum and the bladder, and the volumes that received more than 50, 75 and 90% of the prescribed dose were measured. Treatment plans were then recomputed using tissue inhomogeneity correction maintaining the intensity profiles and monitor units of each port. The prescription point dose and other dosimetric parameters were remeasured. Results: The inhomogeneity correction reduced the prescription point dose by an average 4.9 and 4.0% with 6 and 10 MV X-rays, respectively. The average reductions of the $V_{p>95%}$ were 0.8 and 0.9% with the 6 and 10 MV X-rays, respectively. The mean doses in the PTV were reduced by an average of 4.2 and 3.4% with the 6 and 10 MV X-rays, respectively. The irradiated volume parameters in the rectum and bladder were less decreased; less than 2.1 % (1.2%) of the reduction in the rectum (bladder). The average reductions in the mean dose were 1.0 and 0.5% in the rectum and bladder, respectively. Conclusions: Neglect of tissue inhomogeneity in the IMRT treatment of prostate cancer gives rise to a notable overestimation of the dose delivered to the target, whereas the impact of tissue inhomogeneity correction to the surrounding critical organs is less significant.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the fad dieting status and needs of nutrition education on healthy dieting in male and female collegians according to the desired loss weight. The subjects were 611 students (287 males, 324 females) from universities in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces in Korea. The subjects were divided into the following four groups based on the difference between their current body weight and their desired body weight: no desired weight loss (WL0), desired weight loss less than 5 kg (WL5), desired weight loss 6 to 10 kg (WL10), and desired weight loss more than 11 kg (WL11). The fad dieting status was surveyed using a questionnaire about 11 selected trendy dieting methods. The higher desired weight loss group showed higher current weight and BMI in both males and females. Self weight overestimation was higher in the females than in the males, and in the WL10 group than in the other groups of males. As desired loss weight increased, weight loss trials and experienced trendy dieting types increased in both males and females. In the male subjects, the experience of the half meal diet and the chicken breast diet was significantly associated with the desired loss weight. In females, trials of more trendy diet types including the half meal diet, cereal diet, fasting, and Atkins diet were significantly associated with the higher desired loss weight. The need for nutrition education on healthy dieting was high among all the different desired weight loss groups, showing that a minimum of 60% of subjects in each group answered 'necessary and strongly necessary', with the highest in the WL11 group in both males and females. From these results, desired loss weight is associated with higher current weight status, unhealthy weight control practices, and needs for nutrition education in both male and female subjects. Therefore, in the future, nutrition education programs should give greater attention to providing healthy dieting methods for young collegians who desire more weight loss.

  • BACKGROUND: Although 1 M $NH_4OAc$ (pH 7.0) is predominantly used as the extractant of exchangeable cations in agricultural soils, this method is unsuitable for extracting the cations in saline and calcareous soils. This study was performed to select a proper method to determine exchangeable cations in vinyl greenhouse soils. METHODS AND RESULTS: Exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na) in saline vinyl greenhouse soils were determined after extraction with 1 M $NH_4OAc$ (pH 7.0 and 8.5) and 1 M alcoholic $NH_4Cl$ (pH 8.5). Sum of exchangeable cations of the soils extracted with 1 M $NH_4OAc$ at pH 7.0 was 1.9-2.5 times greater than soil cation exchange capaity determined at pH 7.0, even though soluble salts were pre-removed. A similar result was found when the cations were extracted with 1 M $NH_4OAc$ at pH 8.5. Those results are mostly due to the overestimation of exchangeable Ca and Mg, linked to a partial dissolution of sparingly soluble salts in $NH_4OAc$ solution. When extracted with 1 M alcoholic $NH_4Cl$ at pH 8.5, extractable Ca and Mg decreased significantly due to the lower solubility of Ca and Mg carbonates in the extractant. And the sum of exchangeable cations was very close to the corresponding exchange capacity of soils. CONCLUSION: Alcoholic $NH_4Cl$ (pH 8.5) is proposed as a reliable extractant in determination of exchangeable cations in saline vinyl greenhouse soils. And soluble salts should be removed prior to the extraction of exchangeable cations.

  • Previous studies for analyzing optimal haulage routes of dump trucks in open pit mines mostly used raster data. However, the raster data has several problems in performing optimal route analyses: (1) the jagged appearance of haulage roads according the cell resolution often causes overestimation of the travel cost; (2) it difficult to trace the topological relationships among haulage roads. These problems can be eliminated by using vector network data, however a new method is required to reflect the performance characteristics of a dump truck according to terrain gradient changes. This study presents a new method to create vector network data with the consideration of terrain gradient for analyzing optimal haulage routes of dump trucks in open pit mines. It consists of four procedures: (a) creating digital elevation models, (b) digitizing haulage road networks, (c) calculating the terrain gradient of haulage roads, and (d) calculating the average speed and travel time of a dump truck along haulage roads. A simple case study at the Roto South pit in the Pasir open pit coal mine, Indonesia is also presented to provide proof that the proposed method is easily compatible to ArcGIS Network Analyst software and is effective in finding optimal haulage routes of dump trucks with considering terrain gradient in open pit mines.

  • Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one the common lethal cancers in Iran. Detection of GC in the early stages would assesses to improve the survival of patients. In this study, we attempt to evaluate the accuracy of EUS in detection depth of invasion of GC among Iranian Patients. Materials and Methods: This study is a retrospective study of patients with pathologically confirmed GC. They underwent EUS before initiating the treatment. The accuracy of EUS and agreement between the two methods was evaluated by comparing pre treatment EUS finding with post operative histopathological results. Results: The overall accuracy of EUS for T and N staging was 67.9% and 75.47, respectively. Underestimation and overestimation was seen in 22 (14.2%) and 40 (25.6%) respectively. The EUS was more accurate in large tumors and the tumors located in the middle and lower parts of the stomach. The EUS was more sensitive in T3 staging. The values of weighted Kappa from the T and N staging were 0.53 and 0.66, respectively. Conclusions: EUS is a useful modality for evaluating the depth of invasion of GC. The accuracy of EUS was higher if the tumor was located in the lower parts of the stomach and the size of the tumor was more than 3 cm. Therefore, judgments made upon other criteria evaluated in this study need to be reconsidered.

  • In this paper, an adaptive CAC(Connection Admission Control) method is proposed. The adaptive CAC uses traffic estimates derived from both traffic parameter specified by user and cell flow measurements. Traffic estimation using user-specified parameters is performed at every moment of connection request or connection release by recursive formula which makes real-time calculation possible. Traffic estimation using cell flow measurement is carried out when the number of connected calls does not change during a measurement reflection period-renewal period. The most import ant thing for the traffic estimation using cell flow measurement is the determination of the length of a renewal period to trace a real traffic flow with an allowable time lag and the measurement reflection ratio(MRR) both to reduce the portion of overestimation and to avoid underestimation of real traffic flow. To solve these problems, the adaptive CAC updates renewal period and MRR adaptively according to the number of connections and the elapsed time after last connection or release respectively. Performance analysis for the proposed method is evaluated in several aspects for the cases of both homogeneous and heterogeneous bursty traffic. Numerical examples show the adaptive CAC method has the better performance compared with conventional CAC method based on burst model from the both utilization and QOS point of view.

  • An accurate pedestrian-delay model is essential for the pedestrian-oriented evaluation of signalized intersection (SI). The crossing behaviors of pedestrians at signalized pedestrian crosswalks (SPCs) are various, and their arrival behaviors consist of two types, random and platoon. It is natural, hence, that the behaviors of pedestrian crossing and arrival should be considered in order to estimate accurate pedestrian delay. Despite this necessity, a simple pedestrian-delay model that cannot explain these behaviors of pedestrian movements is still recommended in Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). For these reasons, a pedestrian-delay model, suitable for various SPCs and SIs, is required to make pedestrian-oriented decisions on the design and operation of various SPCs and SIs. This paper proposes a novel pedestrian-delay model that is based on the behaviors of pedestrian crossing and arrival. The proposed model consists of two sub models: the one for SPC and the other for SI. The SPC delay model was developed based on the behaviors of pedestrian crossing during pedestrian green time. The SI delay model was designed based on the behaviors of pedestrian crossing and platoon arrival. The results of a numerical simulation showed that the proposed delay model can successfully overcome the under- and overestimation problems of the HCM model with explaining various behaviors of pedestrian crossing and arrival.

  • Multiple life models are useful in multiple life insurance and multiple life annuities when the payment times of benets in these insurance products are contingent on the future life times of at least two people. A reverse mortgage is an annuity whose monthly payments terminate at the death time of the last survivor; however, actuaries have used female life table to calculate monthly payments of a reverse mortgage. This approach may overestimate monthly payments. This paper suggests a last-survivor life table rather than a female life table to avoid the overestimation of monthly payments. Next, this paper derives the distribution of the future life time of last survivor, and calculates the expected life times of male, female and last survivor. This paper calculates principal limits and monthly payments in cases of male life table, female life table and last-survivor life table, respectively. Some numerical examples are discussed.

  • This study is to estimate Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) daily spatial evapotranspiration (ET) comparing with eddy covariance flux tower ET in Seolmacheon mixed forest (SMK) and Cheongmicheon rice paddy (CFK). The SEBAL input data of Albedo, Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from Terra MODIS products and the meteorological data of wind speed, and solar radiation were prepared for 2 years (2012-2013). For the annual average flux tower ET of 302.8 mm in SMK and 482.0 mm in CFK, the SEBAL ETs were 183.3 mm and 371.5 mm respectively. The determination coefficients ($R^2$) of SEBAL ET versus flux tower ET for total periods were 0.54 in SMK and 0.79 in CFK respectively. The main reason of SEBAL ET underestimation for both sites was from the determination of hot pixel and cold pixel of the day and affected to the overestimation of sensible heat flux.

  • Hydrological models with many parameters and complex model structures require a powerful and detailed model calibration/validation scheme. In this study, we proposed a multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation framework for the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model applied in the Gap-cheon catchment located downstream of the Geum river basin. The sensitivity analysis conducted before main calibration helped understand various hydrological processes and the characteristics of subcatchments by identifying sensitive parameters in the model. In addition, the model's parameters were estimated based on existing data prior to calibration in order to increase the validity of model. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients and correlation coefficient were used to estimate compare model output with the observed streamflow data: $R_{eff}\;and\;R^2$ ranged 0.41-0.84 and 0.5-0.86, respectively, at the Heuduck station. Model reproduced baseflow estimated using recursive digital filter except for 2-5% overestimation at the Sindae and Boksu stations. Model also reproduced the temporal variability and fluctuation magnitude of observed groundwater levels with $R^2$ of 0.71 except for certain periods. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of multi-variable and multi-site method provided high confidence for the structure and estimated parameter values of the model.
