  • The stability of low-crested structure (LCS) and overtopping discharge over a seawall behind the LCS are influenced by the water level behind the structure. Hence, the experimental results can be distorted unless the increase of water level is known when two-dimensional experiment is carried out. In order to estimate increase of the mean water level behind the low-crested structure, this study applied a hybrid technique that combined results of two-dimensional model test and hydrodynamic numerical modeling based on the relationship between the water level and discharge. By using this technique, the mean water level increase and flow field can be obtained almost at the same time, which resolved the above problem considerably. In addition, this method can provide an approximate information about the outflow velocity from the openings of the structure, which is helpful for selecting appropriate planar configuration of the low-crested structure.

  • Korea's multi-purpose dams, which were constructed in the 1970s and 1980s, have a single outlet located near the bottom for hydropower generation. Problems such as freezing damage to crops due to cold water discharge and an increase the foggy days have been raised downstream of some dams. In this study, we analyzed the effect of water intake depth on the reservoir's water temperature stratification structure and outflow temperature targeting Hapcheon Reservoir, where hypolimnetic withdrawal is drawn via a fixed depth outlet. Using AEM3D, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic water quality model, the vertical water temperature distribution of Hapcheon Reservoir was reproduced and the seasonal water temperature stratification structure was analyzed. Simulation periods were wet and dry year to compare and analyze changes in water temperature stratification according to hydrological conditions. In addition, by applying the intake depth change scenario, the effect of water intake depth on the thermal structure was analyzed. As a result of the simulation, it was analyzed that if the hypolimnetic withdrawal is changed to epilimnetic withdrawal, the formation location of the thermocline will decrease by 6.5 m in the wet year and 6.8 m in the dry year, resulting in a shallower water depth. Additionally, the water stability indices, Schmidt Stability Index (SSI) and Buoyancy frequency (N2), were found to increase, resulting in an increase in thermal stratification strength. Changing higher withdrawal elevations, the annual average discharge water temperature increases by 3.5℃ in the wet year and by 5.0℃ in the dry year, which reduces the influence of the downstream river. However, the volume of the low-water temperature layer and the strength of the water temperature stratification within the lake increase, so the water intake depth is a major factor in dam operation for future water quality management.

  • Daecheong Reservoir was made by the construction of a large dam (>15 m in height) on the middle to downstream of the Geum River and the discharge systems have the watergate-spillway (WS), a hydropower penstock (HPP), and two intake towers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the limnological anomalies of turbid water reduction, green algae phenomenon, and oligotrophic state in the lower part of reservoir dam site, and compared with hydro-meteorological factors. Field surveys were conducted in two stations of near dam and the outlet of HPP with one week intervals from January to December 2000. Rainfall was closely related to the fluctuations of inflow, outflow and water level. The rainfall pattern was depended on the storm of monsoon and typhoon, and the increase of discharge and turbidity responded more strongly to the intensity than the frequency. Water temperature and DO fluctuations within the reservoir water layer were influenced by meteorological and hydrological events, and these were mainly caused by water level fluctuation based on temperature stratification, density current and discharge types. The discharges of WS and HPP induced to the flow of water bodies and the outflows of turbid water and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively. Especially, when hypoxic or low-oxygen condition was present in the bottom water, the discharge through HPP has contributed significantly to the outflow of phosphorus released from the sediment into the downstream of dam. In addition, HPP effluent which be continuously operated throughout the year, was the main factor that could change to a low trophic level in the downreservoir (lacustrine zone). And water-bloom (green-tide) occurring in the lower part of reservoir was the result that the water body of upreservoir being transported and diffused toward the downreseroir, when discharging through the WS. Finally, the hydropower effluent was included the importance and dynamics that could have a temporal and spatial impacts on the physical, chemical and biological factors of the reservoir ecosystem.

  • In this study we quantified the long-term change in discharge against precipitation in a forested watershed and investigated how the growth of forest trees influences these changes. We found a proportional relationship between precipitation and discharge for each year, and discharge decreased gradually with time. Precipitation and discharge were highest in July and August, and the changes in precipitation, discharge, and runoff rate did not always coincide, given that high runoff rate was shown in August and September. The monthly coefficient of variation (CV) for discharge was larger than that for precipitation, and the deviation between precipitation and discharge increased gradually. From 2011 to 2017, the gradient of the trend line for the change of total discharge and direct runoff against precipitation decreased, whereas the gradient of the base flow increased in this same time period. A possible explanation is that the water holding capacity of soil deposits increased as the forest soil of the Palgong Mountain watershed developed and the increase of base flow rose with groundwater level together with that of outflow quantity. The coefficient of flood recession was lower in the period 2011 to 2017 than in 2003 to 2010; thus, the reduction of discharge was mitigated and remained steady as time progressed. We conclude from these results that the discharge of surface runoff decreased as tree growth and base flow increased; however, the water yield function of the forest increased gradually.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of concentrations of pollutants such as TN (Total Nitrogen), TP (Total Phosphorus) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) in outflow from a nonpoint source dominated watershed ($6.7km^2$). Regular flow measurement and water sampling were taken at five-day intervals during two years (February 2002 to January 2004) in the Ingyeong River, a tributary of the Han River. The mean concentrations of pollutants during rainy days were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those during dry days. For dry days, the flow-weighted mean concentration (0.06 mg/L) of TP during paddy irrigation periods were higher than that (0.02 mg/L) during non-irrigation periods. The seasonal mean concentration of TN was highest in spring likely due to nitrogen fertilization, but those of TP and COD were highest in summer due to particulate phosphorus and sediment-associated organic matter caused by increased discharge. The pollutant concentrations significantly increased with discharge, suggesting that the measures to reduce the increase in the concentrations during storms are needed to control nonpoint source pollution.

  • Due to severe flooding, the long-term residence of turbidity flows within the stratified Daecheong Reservoir have lengthened. A long-term residence of turbidity flows within the stratified Daecheong Reservoir after floods has been major environmental issue. The objective of this study was to assess the impact to water supply from the hydrodynamics and turbidity outflow. Two gate operation scenarios were investigated. Scenario A refers to gate operations according to rainfall events, and scenario B refers to gate operations according to inflow. From the results of secenario A, the SS concentrations decreased from 0.44mg/l to 0.54mg/l at the front of the dam, whereas SS concentrations increased from 0.24mg/l to 1.24mg/l at the intake points at Munhi and Daejeon. From the results of scenario B, the SS concentrations decreased from 0.61mg/l to 0.83mg/l at the front of Dam; howeve, SS concentrations also decreased from 0.16mg/l to 0.48mg/l at the intake points at Munhi and Daejeon. It seems that it may be more efficient to control turbidity by creating additional outflows of generated discharge after intensive rainfalls than not.

  • Works for dam heightening plan have dual purposes: flood disaster prevention by securing additional storage volume and river ecosystem conservation by supplying stream maintenance flow. Now, the dam heightening project is in progress and there are 93 dam heightened reservoir. After the dam heightening project, 2.2 hundred million ton of flood control volume in reservoirs will be secured. Thus it is necessary to evaluate the effects of the dam heightening project on watershed hydrology and stream hydraulics, and resulting flood damages. This study was aimed to assess the impact of outflow from the dam heightened reservoir group on the Whangryong river design flood. The HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System) model was used for estimating flood discharge, while HEC-5 (Hydrologic Engineering Center-5) was used for reservoir routing. This study analysed flood reduction effect on 100yr and 200yr return periods about the before and after heightening of agricultural dams. Based on the results of this study, the reduction of flood peak discharge at downstream of the reservoir group was estimated to be about 41% and 53% for 100yr and 200yr frequencies, respectively.

  • The inflow and outflow loads of T-N and T-P from a paddy field area during the irrigation period were investigated. For the concentration of T-N and T-P, surface water in paddies showed highest among irrigation water, drainage water and percolation water. For T-N, the average concentration of drainage water is higher than that of irrigation water before middle of June but is lower since. It is shown that the L(load)-Q (discharge) equation of T-N has high correlation for irrigation water, but the L-Q equation of T-P has high correlation for drainage water.
