  • Framed masonry wall structures represent a typical high-rise structural system that are also seismically vulnerable. During ground motions, they are excited in both in-plane and out-of-plane terms. The interaction between the frame and the infill during ground motion is a highly investigated phenomenon in the field of seismic engineering. This paper presents a numerical investigation of two distinct static out-of-plane loading methods for framed masonry wall models. The first and most common method is uniformly loaded infill. The load is generally induced by the airbag. The other method is similar to in-plane push-over method, involves loading of the frame directly, not the infill. Consequently, different openings with the same areas and various placements were examined. The numerical model is based on calibrated in-plane bare frame models and on calibrated wall models subjected to OoP bending. Both methods produced widely divergent results in terms of load bearing capabilities, failure modes, damage states etc. Summarily, uniform load on the panel causes more damage to the infill than to the frame; openings do influence structures behavior; three hinged arching action is developed; and greater resistance and deformations are obtained in comparison to the frame loading method. Loading the frame causes the infill to bear significantly greater damage than the infill; infill and openings only influence the behavior after reaching the peak load; infill does not influence initial stiffness; models with opening fail at same inter-storey drift ratio as the bare frame model.

  • The phase-averaged velocity fields of 3 dimensional turbulent wake behind a marine propeller measured by 2D PIV and stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) were compared directly. In-plane velocity fields obtained from the consecutive particle images captured by one camera in 2D PIV have perspective errors due to out-of-plane motion. However, the perspective errors can be removed by measuring three component velocity fields using SPIV method with two cameras. It is also necessary to measure three components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller for the suitable propeller design. 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}C\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the downstream region. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake developed along the blade surfaces and tip vortices were formed periodically. The perspective errors caused by the out-of-plane motion was estimated by the comparison of 2D PIV and SPIV results. The difference in the axial mean velocity fields measured by both techniques are nearly proportional to the mean out-of-plane velocity component which has large values in the regions of the tip and trailing vortices. The axial turbulence intensity measured by 2D PIV was overestimated since the out-of-plane velocity fluctuations influence the in-plane velocity vectors and increase the in-plane turbulence intensities.

  • Atomically thin graphene is the ideal model system for studying nanoscale friction due to its intrinsic two-dimensional anisotropy. Furthermore, modulating its tribological properties could be an important milestone for graphene-based micro and nano-mechanical devices. Here, we report that the tribological properties can be easily altered via simple chemical modifications of the graphene surface. Friction force microscopy measurements show that hydrogenated, fluorinated, and oxidized graphenes exhibit, 2-, 6-, and 7-fold enhanced nanoscale friction on their surfaces, respectively, compared to pristine graphene. The measured nanoscale friction should be associated with the adhesive and elastic properties of the chemically modified graphenes. Density functional theory calculations suggest that, while the adhesive properties of chemically modified graphenes are marginally reduced down to ~30%, the out-of-plane elastic properties are drastically increased up to 800%. Based on these findings, we propose that nanoscale friction on graphene surfaces is characteristically different from that on conventional solid surfaces; stiffer graphene exhibits higher friction, whereas a stiffer three-dimensional solid generally exhibits lower friction. The unusual friction mechanics of graphene is attributed to the intrinsic mechanical anisotropy of graphene, which is inherently stiff in plane, but remarkably flexible out of plane. The out-of-plane flexibility can be modulated up to an order of magnitude by chemical treatmentof the graphene surface. The correlation between the measured nanoscale friction and the calculated out-of-plane flexibility suggests that the frictional energy in graphene is mainly dissipated through the out-of-plane vibrations, or the flexural phonons of graphene.

  • In press forming of sheet metals, the material sheet is usually subjected to very large plastic strain under in-plane stressing. Moreover, the sheet also very often is subjected to out-of-plane compressive force between tools such as the upper and lower dies, the blank holder and the die, and so forth. In this paper, it is clearly demonstrated theoretically that out-of-plane stress may notably raise the forming limit strain and thus it can be effectively utilized to avoid earlier fracture of the sheet in press forming.

  • We studied magnetic properties of co thin films deposited on Pd (111) surface, which attracted much attention recently due to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, using magnetic circular dichroism(MCD). Special attention was paid on the effect of Pd capping and interface roughness on the direction of magnetic easy axis, and for that purpose MCD signals for all Co thicknesses were measured with two different ways : in-plane and out-of-plane geometry. In case of bare Co films deposited on smooth Pd(111) surface, no MCD signal was observed under 4$\AA$ co thickness. At 4$\AA$ Co thickness, MCD signal at the out-of-plane geometry was observed, and for thicker Co films, only in-plane MCD signal was measured. This type of magnetic easy axis transition has been reported for other cases like Co/Pt system. The effect of 5$\AA$ Pd capping on these bare Co films made an remarkable change on the transition of magnetic easy axis. Out-of-plane MCD signals exists up to 20$\AA$ Co thickness, and disappears at 24$\AA$ Co thickness. In-plane MCD signals first appears at 10$\AA$ Co thickness and gradually increases up to 24$\AA$ Co thickness. Between 10$\AA$ and 20$\AA$ Co thickness, in-plane and out-of-plane MCD signal coexist. The formation of multi-domain structure or the existence of tilted magnetic easy axis is an possible scenario for such an interesting coexistence. The effect of interface roughness was also tested by measuring MCD signal on Co films deposited on un-annealed Pd(111) surface. Out-of-plane MCD signal was observed up to 8$\AA$ Co thickness and the anisotropy of MCD signal at 4$\AA$ Co thickness was very large with respect to that of Co film deposited on the smooth substrate. Above 8$\AA$ thickness, there exists only in-plane MCD signal. From above results, it was concluded that both Pd capping and interface roughness induce and reenforce the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co/Pd multilayer system made by sputtering method can be well understood from our results.

  • In recent years, interest is growing in the engineering community on the experimental assessment and the theoretical prediction of the out-of-plane (OOP) seismic response of unreinforced masonry (URM) infills, which are widespread in Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings in Europe and in the Mediterranean area. In the literature, some mechanical-based models for the prediction of the entire OOP force-displacement response have been formulated and proposed. However, the small number of experimental tests currently available has not allowed, up to current times, a robust and reliable evaluation of the predictive capacity of such response models. To enrich the currently available experimental database, six pure OOP tests on URM infills in RC frames were carried out at the Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II. Test specimens were built with the same materials and were different only for the thickness of the infill walls and for the number of their edges mortared to the confining elements of the RC frames. In this paper, the results of these experimental tests are briefly recalled. The main aim of this study is comparing the experimental response of test specimens with the prediction of mechanical models presented in the literature, in order to assess their effectiveness and contribute to the definition of a robust and reliable model for the evaluation of the OOP seismic response of URM infill walls.

  • In this paper, experiment and dynamics simulations were carried out to identify and reduce the out-of-plane vibration that occurs in a centrifugal fan of an air conditioner installed to a wall. In a wall-installed air conditioner, large space between a case and heat exchanger is often required for the fan to avoid the collision with the case and exchanger. This large space hinders the slim design of the air conditioner even if air conditioner market demands a slim air conditioner. In the present study, in order to determine the cause of the vibration in the centrifugal fan, the out-of-plane vibration and the physical properties were investigated, and the dynamic characteristics of the centrifugal fan were obtained by experiments. Based on these experiments, a dynamic simulation model was established to determine the cause of the out-of-plane vibration of the centrifugal fan. It was found that the main factor of out-of-plane vibration in the centrifugal fan is the axial misalignment between the centrifugal fan and the motor shaft.

  • This paper presents the theoretical natural frequencies of out-of-plane deformable ring based on the variables such as out-of-plane deflection, torsional rotation and shear rotation. Based on the same variables, a finite element eigen analysis is carried out by using the $C^0$-continuous, isoparametric element which has three nodes per element and three degrees-of-freedom at each node. Numerical experiments are peformed to find the integration scheme which produces accurate natural frequencies, natural modes and correct rigid body motion. The uniformly reduced integration and the selective reduced integration give more accurate numerical frequencies than the uniformly full integration, but the uniformly reduced integration produces incorrect rigid body motion while selective reduced integration does correct one. Therefore, the ring element based on the three variables which employes selective reduced integration is recommended to avoid spurious modes, to alleviate the error due to shear locking and to produce correct rigid body motion, simultaneously.
