  • Steady-state structure and acoustic-pressure responses of $H_2$/Air counterflow diffusion flames are studied numerically with a detailed chemistry in view of acoustic instability. The Rayleigh criterion is adopted to judge acoustic amplification or attenuation from flame responses. Steady-state flame structures are first investigated and flame responses to various acoustic-pressure oscillations are numerically calculated in near-equilibrium and near-extinction regimes. The acoustic responses of $H_2$/Air flame show that the responses in near-extinction regime always contribute to acoustic amplification regardless of acoustic-oscillation frequency Flames near extinction condition are sensitive to pressure perturbation and thereby peculiar nonlinear responses occur, which could be a possible mechanism in generating the threshold phenomena observed in combustion chamber of propulsion systems.

  • A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted using the hybrid turbulence model. The model adopted is a modified type of DES using k- ε two-equation model. Cavity geometry and flow condition are based on Cattafesta's experiment. Computational results are compared with the results of Cattafesta's experiment. The simulation successfully predicts the oscillatory features and the Strouhal number of the oscillation compares very favorably with that of the dominant mode of experimental data. Vorticity contours obtained from the simulation data are consistent with the smoke visualization of the Cattafesta's experiment. The coherent structures of cavity flow are also investigated using Q criterion.

  • We studied on the design of electrical parameters for ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma) light sources which can be effective to improve the electrical power efficiency of it. These parameters were derivated from Barkhausen theory about the oscillating condition of a ballaster. The relationships of $f-I_p$ and f-n were calculated theoretically and then these relationships were compared with the measured results about $I_p$ and power depending to a discharge length(l) of ICP light source. Finally, we can see that a specific range of induced current depending to a discharge length would be necessary to minimize the change of magnetization inductance and driving frequency at driving.

  • In the recent years flow around bridges are investigated using computer modeling. Selvam (1998), Selvam and Bosch (1999), Frandsen and McRobie (1999) used finite element procedures. Larsen and Walther (1997) used discrete vorticity procedure. The aeroelastic instability is a major criterion to be checked for long span bridges. If the wind speed experienced by a bridge is greater than the critical wind speed for flutter, then the bridge fails due to aeroelastic instability. Larsen and Walther (1997) computed the critical velocity for flutter using discrete vortex method similar to wind tunnel procedures. In this work, the critical velocity for flutter will be calculated directly (free oscillation procedure) similar to the approaches reported by Selvam et al. (1998). It is expected that the computational time required to compute the critical velocity using this approach may be much shorter than the traditional approach. The computed critical flutter velocity of 69 m/s is in reasonable comparison with wind tunnel measurement. The no flutter and flutter conditions are illustrated using the bridge response in time.

  • Acoustic pressure response and NO formation of hydrogen-air diffusion flames at various pressures are numerically studied by employing counterflow diffusion flame as a model flame let in turbulent flames in combustion chambers. The numerical results show that extinction strain rate increases linearly with pressure and then decreases, and increases again at high pressures. Thus, flames are classified into three pressure regimes. Such non-monotonic behavior is caused by the change in chemical kinetic behavior as pressure rises. Acoustic pressure response in each regime is investigated based on the Rayleigh criterion. At low pressures, pressure-rise causes the increase in flame temperature and chain branching/recombination reaction rates, resulting in increased heat release. Therefore, amplification in pressure oscillation is predicted. Similar phenomena are predicted at high pressures. At moderate pressures, weak amplification is predicted. Emission index of NO shows similar behaviors as to the peak-temperature variation with pressure.

  • In this paper, it is suggested that the selection method of optimal parameter of power system stabilizer(PSS) with robustness in low frequency oscillation for power system using Real Variable Elitism Genetc Algorithm(RVEGA). The optimal parameters were selected in the case of power system stabilizer with one lead compensator, and two lead compensator. Also, the frequency responses characteristic of PSS, the system eigenvalues criterion and the dynamic characteristic were considered in the normal load and the heavy load, which proved usefulness of RVEGA compare with Yu's compensator design theory.

  • The autoreclosing is applied to power system for maintaining system stability and continuity of supply. Developments on distributed generation(DG) grows significantly by environmental issues and economical issues. If the DG is connected to distribution system, the DG influences the technical aspects such as power quality, protection and stability. It causes the challenges to protection, especially to reclosing. In order to achieve reliability and safety of the distribution system, the rules and guidelines suggest that the DG units should be rapidly disconnected from the network before the reclosing. If the DG is disconnected whenever the fault occurs, it cannot be utilized effectively. This paper presents the adaptive reclosing algorithm considering the DG. The algorithm consists of angle oscillation's judgment, EEEAC(Emergency Expanded Equal-Area Criterion), calculation of optimal reclosing time and re-connection algorithm. The simulation is implemented for the DG technology by using EMTP MODELS. The simulation results show that the transient stability is maintained and the DG is protected against disturbance.

  • In this paper, the effects of torsional flexibility on a flapping airfoil are investigated. The aerodynamic forces of a torsional flexible flapping airfoil is computed using 2-D unsteady vortex panel method. A typical-section aeroelastic model is used for the aeroelsatic calculation of the flapping airfoil. Torsional flexibility and excitation frequency are considered as main effective parameters. Under heavy airfoil condition , the thrust peak is observed at the points where the frequency ratio is about 0.75. Based on this peak criterion, there exists two different motions. One is an inertia driven deformation motion and the other is an oscillation driven deformation motion. Also, in the thrust peak condition, the phase angle is kept 85 degrees, independent of the torsional flexibility and the excitation frequency.

  • Large amplitude oscillation of steepled main cables usually presents during construction of a long-span bridge. To study this phenomenon, six typical main cables with different cross sections during construction are investigated. Two main foci have been conducted. Firstly, aerodynamic coefficients of a main cable are obtained and compared through simulation and wind tunnel test: (1) to ensure the simulation accuracy, influences of the numerical model's grid size, and the jaggy edges of main cable's cross section on main cable's aerodynamic coefficients are investigated; (2) aerodynamic coefficients of main cables at different wind attack angles are obtained based on the wind tunnel test in which the experimental model is made by rigid plastic using the 3D Printing Technology; (3) then numerical results are compared with wind tunnel test results, and they are in good agreement. Secondly, aerodynamic coefficients of the six main cables at different wind attack angles are obtained through numerical simulation. Then Den Hartog criterion is used to analyze the transverse galloping of main cables during construction. Results show all the six main cables may undergo galloping, which may be an important reason for the large amplitude oscillation of steepled main cables during construction. The flow structures around the main cables indicate that the characteristic of the airflow trajectory over a steepled main cable may play an important role in the galloping generation. Engineers should take some effective measures to control this harmful phenomenon due to the big possibility of the onset of galloping during the construction period.

  • In this research, design and fabrication of marine repeater capable to extend communication coverage in monitoring system of fishing gear automatic identification, which is one of implementation method of the real-name electric fishing gear system declared by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2016, is reported. The proposed marine repeater is fabricated in a form of RF repeater with interference cancellation system (ICS), which can cancel the oscillation due to feedback signal between service antenna and link antenna. In design process, we secure the isolation of 30 dB between service antenna and link antenna. It is confirmed that when the level of feedback signal into repeater input be lower of 15 dB than repeater gain, error vector magnitude due to oscillation can be lower than the performance criterion of 6%, from the test verification. It is expected that the service coverage will be extended by applying the developed marine ICS RF repeater into marine IoT network including monitoring system of fishing gear automatic identification.
