  • Studies of unsteady-airfoil flows have been motivated mostly by efforts to avoid. or reduce such undesirable effects as flutter, noise and vibrations, dynamic stall. In this paper, we carry out a computational study of viscous flows around a two-dimensional oscillating airfoil to investigate unsteady effects in these important and challenging flows. A fully implicit incompressible RANS solver has been used for calculating unsteady viscous flows around an airfoil. The cell-centered End order finite volume method is utilized to discretize governing equations. in order to ease the flow computation for fluid region changing in time, improve the qualify of solution and simplify the grid generation for an oscillating airfoil flow, the computational method adopts a moving and deforming grid generation technique based on the multi-block grid topology. The numerical method is applied for calculating viscous flows of an oscillating NACA 0012 in uniform flow. The computational results are compared with available experimental data. Computed results are compared with experimental data and flow characteristics of the experiment are reproduced well In the computed results.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of pressure oscillation and heat transfer performance in an oscillating capillary tube heat pipe were experimentally investigated with respect to the heat flux, the charging ratio of working fluid, and the inclination angle to the horizontal orientation. The experimental results showed that the frequency of pressure oscillation was between 0.1 Hz and 1.5 Hz at the charging ratio of 40 vol.%. The saturation pressure of working fluid in the oscillating capillary tube heat pipe increased as the heat flux was increased. Also, as the charging ratio of working fluid was increased, the amplitude of pressure oscillation increased. When the pressure waves were symmetric sinusoidal waves at the charging ratios of 40 vol.% and 60 vol.%, the heat transfer performance was improved. At the charging ratios of 20 vol.% and 80 vol.%, the waveforms of pressure oscillation were more complicated, and the heat transfer performance reduced. At the charging ratio of 40. vol.%, the heat transfer performance of the OCHP was at the best when the inclination angle was 90$^{\circ}$ the pressure wave was a sinusoidal waveform, the pressure difference was at the least, the oscillation amplitude was at the least, and the frequency of pressure oscillation was the highest.

  • The seawater exchange breakwater equipped with an oscillating water channel and water transmitting pipes has a very spectacular function that seawater supply can be greatly increased due to the upsurge of the water surface inside the channel at resonance condition which can be reached when the incident wave period becomes close to the natural period of the channel. The variations of the water level and period inside the channel are very important factors in enhancing the efficiency of sea water exchange, especially when designing the breakwater cross-section in shallow water zone which requires longer resonance period with the elongated horizontal projection of the channel. In the present study, a hydraulic experiment was performed varying the length of the oscillating channel, and the resonance periods and water surface variations are analyzed in terms of water transmission through the pipes.

  • The power output of the stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide basic data for the design of the regenerator matrix, characteristics of working fluid velocities were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, two different wire screens were used. The results are summarized as follows; 1. When a regenerator is not filled with any wire screen, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow shows 1.3 times faster than that of one directional flow. 2. When a regenerator is filled with the wire screen of No.50, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow reveals 2.5 times faster than that of one directional flow. 3. When a regenerator is filled with the wire screen of No. 100, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow shows 2 times faster than that of one directional flow, regardless of the number of packed wire screens. 4. Working fluid velocity is decreased wire the increase in number of meshes and packed wire screens.

  • An approximate analytical method has been developed for estimating hydrodynamic forces acting on oscillating inner cylinder in concentric annulus. When the rigid inner cylinder executes translational oscillation, fluid inertia and damping forces on the oscillating cylinder are generated by unsteady pressure and viscous skin friction. Considering the dynamic-characteristics of unsteady viscous flow and the added mass coefficient of inviscid fluid, these hydrodynamic forces including viscous effect are dramatically simplified and expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number and the geometry of annular configuration. Thus, the viscous effect on the forces can be estimated very easily compared to an existing theory. The forces are calculated by two models developed for relatively high and low oscillatory Reynolds numbers. The model for low oscillatory Reynolds number is suitable for relatively high ratio of the penetration depth to annular space while the model for high oscillatory Reynolds number is applicable to the case of relatively low ratio. It is found that the transient ratio between two models is approximately 0.2~0.25 and the forcea are expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number, explicity. The present results show good agreements with an existing numerical results, especially for high and low penetration ratios to annular gap.
