Expression Analysis of the Modern Fashion Design Used Origami's Expression Methods (오리가미의 표현 기법이 나타난 현대 패션 디자인의 표현 분석)

  • Origami’s formative characteristics have been used in modern fashion design usefully. This article categorized origami expression methods by making technique as three category; producing methods, organized principles and expressive characteristics. And then, this article argued characteristics of fashion design used origami expression methods. Fashion design using origami expression methods had three characteristics; basic tailoring, decorative surface, fluidity & rhythm. The proceeding article on paper folding argued formative aspects of paper folding widely, while this study focused on origami’s basic expression methods in detail and clarified characteristics of fashion design used origami. This article’s originality existed in that point. And also a result of this study would be regarded as a important sources in design processing of fashion design.

A Soft Actuation System with Origami Pump for Maximizing Haptic Feedback (햅틱 피드백 극대화를 위한 오리가미 펌프 기반의 소프트 구동기 시스템)

  • Traditional actuation system such as electric and pneumatic actuator has obvious advantages and disadvantages. To combine advantages and compensate disadvantages of the traditional actuation, a pneumatic actuation system with an internal air pressure source is noteworthy approach. In this paper, a soft pneumatic actuation system based on origami pump is described for haptic feedback glove. To improve wearability, an origami pump is introduced because the origami pump is much lighter than air compressor. The miniaturized electric actuation system is also designed with 3D printed planetary gear in order to reduce the volume of the system. To figure out the performance of the system, shrinkage distance of origami pump was measured with vision camera. The pressure in the origami pump was also estimated to understand the performance of the system.

  • The paper-folding effect of origami signifies a planarization of the body which questions the three dimensional construction of the body in a more conventional clothing system. Un-structured, variable space posited between the body and clothes, and an absence of gender identification characterizes the planarization of the body. Origami inspiration in fashion stresses a will-to-form rather than mere bodily proportion and structure, which explores a trans-extensity that goes beyond the boundary of the body. This study inquires on the influence of origami as a method to create new vestmental space in contemporary fashion. The flat-plane clothes of origami-inspired design are no longer cut to the body and the clothes could be altered by the wearer. The space is introduced in between a three-dimensional dress-body and the body. Origami-inspired design in Japanese avant-garde fashion deconstructs the convention and promotes a symbiosis of body and clothing instead. The shape of the body is completely estranged by three-dimensional sculptures, alluding to the paper folds of origami and the movement of the body that are transmitted to the clothing through fine folding that transform into an unexpected event.

  • Creative application of exaggerated measurements and origami principles can make clothing design unique and formative clothing design possible. There have been many techniques applied to formative clothing design, but, in particular, origami principles, in company with exaggerated measurements, play a significant role in enlightening clothing uniqueness and formativeness in contemporary fashion design. The primary purpose of this study was to make a new suggestion for the production of high value-added fashion by reviewing and synthesizing exaggerated measurements and origami principles. Diverse relevant designs were retrieved through a comprehensive literature review on topic-related theses, books, and fashion media from 2000 and significant cases were retrieved from Rick Owens, Damir Doma & Haider Ackermann out of 2008 & 2009 F/W collections. From a comprehensive review, the following formative characteristics of exaggerated measurements and origami principles applied to clothing design were identified: (1) expandability, (2) fluidity, (3) deconstruction, and (4) irregularity. In addition, the following value of exaggerated measurements and origami principles applied to clothing design were identified: (1) alterability, (2) form potentiality, and (3) contradistinctive formativeness.

The Effects of Origami on the Improvement of Hand Dexterity

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of making an origami crane on the improvement of hand dexterity. Subjects composed of 20 normal adult males were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups of 10 people respectively. For the experimental group, a training of making an origami crane was conducted for 40 to 50 minutes a day during a 4-week training period. The control group was made to engage in everyday activities as usual. For pre and post assessment, Groove Pegboard test, Purdue Pegboard Test, and Jebsen Hand Function Test were used. The results on the effects of making an origami crane showed that there was a statistically significant difference in both the Grooved Pegboard test and Purdue Pegboard test(p<.05). In the Jebsen hand function Test, a significant difference was found in handwriting and building pieces of chess(p<.05), but there was no statistically significant difference in comparison with the right hand during the average performance of picking up small stuffs. The activity of making an origami crane for normal adults was confirmed to be helpful to improve the hand dexterity. Accordingly, making an origami crane is suggested to be an effective way to improve the hand dexterity.

  • DNA origami is the most fitting nano-technology for synthesis of complex nano-structures. DNA crossover which ties DNA helices together are the main reason for the stable sustenance of origami structures with respect to other nano-scale structures. The mechanical properties of DNA crossovers have profound connection with structural rigidity, and it is a known fact that the rigidity changes depending on the arrangement of crossovers. It is possible to control the rigidity of origami structures for functionality and furthermore extends the field of DNA origami application. Here, we investigate the effect of crossovers on 2-Dimensional DNA structures varying crossover arrangement by sensitivity analysis based on finite element model. The crossover properties obtained from this analysis are compared with the existing experimental results.

  • From traditional ceremony to science technology, origami was used as technique for artistic creativity and functionality based on formative characteristics. The purpose of this study is to analyze the expressive characteristics of functionality in fashion design using origami technique. The method of this study was to analyze recent documentaries, fashion books, fashion magazines, internet web site and so forth. The results were as follows: In various fields of design, the category of the expressive characteristics was classified as efficient correspondence of space, compositive convergence of function, variable potentiality of form and human ergonomic optimum. In recent origami fashion based on functionality, the efficient correspondence of space was expressed constructive or decorative pocket design, using on clothing surface and varied design by lifestyle. The compositive convergence of function was expressed innovative connection of fashion items or non-fashion items and deconstructed classical clothing pattern. The variable potentiality of form was expressed control of form by irregular fold, dynamic metamorphosis by organic fold and creation of varied clothing silhouette. The human ergonomic optimum was expressed metamorphosis mechanism from two dimension to three dimension, suitable construction to physical ability and limit and organic form based on articular folding. The functional origami fashion means reflection of nomadic lifestyle, maximum of usability, pursuit of playful sensibility, creation of new body aesthetic and pursuit of technology and humanism. And the result of these study may be used for creative inspiration in fashion design because of unique characteristics.

Design, Fabrication and Analysis of Walking Robot Based on Origami Structure (종이 접기 구조를 활용한 단일 구동기 보행 로봇의 설계, 제작 및 분석)

  • Recently, there have been many researches about applications of origami to mechanical engineering, which realizes a 30 sturcture by folding a 20 plane material. With this simple manufacturing process, origami was even adopted by some roboticists as a way to build an entirely new robot with benefits in terms of cost, weight, and structural simplicity In this paper, we propose a new type of a walking robot based on origami structure. Because all the components of the robot that generate gait motion are mechanically connected, it can actually walk fotward with only a single actuator. We also showed the similarity of gait trajectories between a kinematic analysis and the actual gait motion measured by video tracking. This result proved the possibility of designing an origami-based robot with the identical gait trajectory as we plan.

Fashion accessory bag design apply to paper-folding technique of twelve zodiac (십이지(十二支) 동물의 종이접기 기법을 응용한 가방 디자인)

  • The purpose of this study is to attempt to diversify artistic expression through combinations of the twelve zodiac animals and origami techniques and to propose new directions for fashion design by applying these to fashion accessory bag designs. For the research method, this study researched the representative forms and characteristics of twelve zodiac animals based on the cultural background. Also, diverse cases of origami techniques were sought to apply them to the development of bags. The results are as follows. First, expressed forms of the Chinese zodiac were newly expanded by realizing the form of Chinese zodiac animals through various origami techniques. Origami work displays abstract visual effects rather than intuitive feelings or expressions of flat designs. With this, detailed realizations could be made through the characteristics and cultural implications of animals. Second, the work created in this study utilized zero-waste patterns that use origami techniques on one whole piece. During pattern production, folded parts were marked without waste and the outer fabric and lining were produced. Patterns were all symmetrical lines so most forms were expressed with squares and equilateral triangles. Third, through actual work produced using fabric instead of paper, effects that are brought about through folding are determined in diverse ways according to fabric textures or material types and thicknesses. When paper is folded, shapes are created as folded, but fabric requires the use of supportive material to create the effects of origami. Polyester and blended fabric were easy to use with high levels of function and practicality. Through such diverse production attempts, fixing methods, hand sewing, sewing machines, double-sided tape, and leather adhesive were used.
