  • In this paper, a noble method for rapid cooldown of pulse tube refrigerator (PTR) was proposed and experimentally investigated. An orifice pulse tube refrigerator generates refrigeration effect by expansion PV work at the cold-end, and its amount is affected by the orifice valve opening. There exists the optimum valve opening for maximum cooling capacity and it varies as cold-end temperature. It is verified from simulation results using isothermal model that the optimum valve opening increases as the cold-end temperature increases. In the experiments, a single stage orifice pulse tube refrigerator is fabricated and tested. The fabricated PTR shows 97.5 K of no-load temperature and 10 W at 110 K of cooling capacity with the fixed orifice valve opening. From experiments, the initial cooldown curve with four cases of valve opening control scenario are obtained. And it is experimentally verified that the initial cooldown time can be reduced through the control of orifice valve opening.

  • This paper investigated the characteristics of the turbulent incompressible flow past the orifice ring in an axi-symmetric pipe. The flow field was the turbulent pulsatile flow for Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^{5}$ which was defined based on the maximum velocity and the pipe diameter at the inlet, with oscillating frequence $(f_{os})=1/4{\pi}$ which was considered as quasi-steady state frequence. In the present investigation, finite analytic method was used to solve the governing equations in Navier Stokes and turbulent transport formulations. Particularly at high Reynolds number and low oscillation frequency, the effects of orifice ring on the flow were numerically investigated. The separation zone behind the orifice ring during the acceleration phase was found to be decreased. However, during the deceleration phase, the separation behind the orifice ring for pulsatile flow continuously grow to a size even larger than that in steady flow. The pressure drop in steady flow was found to be constant and always positive while for pulsatile flow the pressure drop change with time. And large turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation rate were found to be located in the region where the flow passes through the orifics ring. The maximum turbulent kinetic energy, generally occurs along the shear layer where the velocity gradient is large.

  • Vent ports are installed on the walls of closed compartments of a launch vehicle to control the pressure drop in the compartments. The ports can be modelled as an orifice, and the accurate prediction of the discharge coefficient of an orifice is essential for the design of vent ports. Experimental methods have been used to determine the discharge coefficients for various shapes of orifices, and extensive databases are available. Wind tunnel tests have been also done to evaluate the effect of interaction between venting outflow and freestream for limited conditions. The goal of the present research is to predict the discharge coefficient of an orifice using CFD and evaluate the accuracy of the method, especially for the orifices exposed to the external flow.

  • In this numerical analysis, the distortion of flow measurement by inlet velocity profile of orifice flowmeter was investigated. To validate the numerical method, the convergence was monitored and the grid dependency was also checked. realizable k-e model was selected and y+ was about 50 in this calculation. the results shows that the pressure at the pressure tab near pipe wall was changed by inclined inlet velocity profile and it leads to distorted a measurement values of flow through the orifice plate from -3.8% to 9%. Therefore, the fully developed inlet flow was required for accurate flow measurement by orifice flowmeter. If not, the orifice plate installed at wrong location should be re-installed or additional actions should be taken.

  • This study is concerned with the method of equilibrium-pressure prediction from transient data. Pressure measurement system consisted of pressure sensor and pressure tube. The surface orifice where pressure is measured is connected to a pressure sensor by a tube. In case of high orifice pressure, the pressure sensor responds rapidly to the orifice pressure. But when the orifice pressure is low the pressure sensor does not respond rapidly to the orifice pressure and time lag occurs seriously. Various test conditions are applied to investigate the time lag and to assess the methods of equilibrium-pressure prediction. The test time of the low-pressure measurement can be reduced by the method of equilibrium-pressure prediction of the present study.

  • When the heat release and acoustic pressure fluctuations are generated in the combustor by irregular combustion, these fluctuations affect the mass flow rate of the propellants injected through the injectors. Also, the variations of the mass flow rate by these fluctuations again bring about irregular combustion and furthermore that is related with combustion instability. Therefore, it is very important to identify the mass variation for the pressure fluctuation on the injector and to investigate its transfer function. So, we first have studied quantifying the variation of mass flow rate generated in simplex swirl injector by injection pressure fluctuation. To acquire the transient mass flow rate in orifice with time, we have tried to measure of the flow axial velocity and liquid film thickness in orifice. The axial velocity is acquired through theoretical approach after measuring the pressure in orifice and the flow area in the orifice is measured by electric conductance method. As results, mass flow rate calculated by axial velocity and liquid film thickness measuring in orifice accorded with mass flow rate acquired by direct measuring method in the small error range within 1 percents in steady state and within 6 percents as average mass flow rate in pulsated state. Hence this method can be used to measure the mass flow rate not only in steady state but also in unsteady state because the mass flow rate in the orifice can acquire with time and this method shows very high accuracy based on the experimental results.

  • In this study, a shock absorber whose orifice area changes according to the oil pressure inside the absorber is developed. The orifice widens and narrows when the oil pressure is high and low, respectively; thus, the orifice area changes according to the oil pressure, in other words, according to the extension/compression velocity. It is well known that the damping force can be expressed as $C{\cdot}v^{\alpha}$. For fluid film damping, the force is proportional to velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=1$, and for orifice damping, it is proportional to the square of velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=2$. The shock absorber proposed in this paper can exhibit different relationships between the damping force and velocity because the orifice area changes according to the induced oil pressure. The motivation of this study is to develop a method for designing a shock absorber with desired values of C and ${\alpha}$ which is not just 1 or 2. Theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted to verify the damping characteristics of the shock absorber. The effect of some major design parameters on damping characteristics has been also examined to relate the design parameters to the damping characteristics.

  • Because of the advancement of digital computers and software technologies, simulation methods have been used to reduce time and costs. A lot of simulation methods have been developed for the improvement of charging efficiency on the intake and exhaust system of engines. In this study, as a basic step for the development of the gas flow simulation program for the intake and exhaust system, the gas flow in a pipe-orifice system was calculated with three algorithms(Method of Characteristics, MacCormack Method for conservation, and MacCoramck Method for nonconservation). The calculated results using three numerical algorithms were compared with measured result to verify the calculation accuracy.

  • Bluff bodies under the external periodic force vibrate at their own natural or forced frequency. Rectangular bodies or similar structures such as high-rise towers and apartments, and recently a well-cited application - offshore floating bodies, usually needs to reduce these vibrations for stability and the mode control. Therefore, this study is aiming to reduce or control the vibration of a structure by a passive control method, i.e., TLCD (Tuned Liquid Column Damper). Controlling a moving body with a TLCD based on a variety of the orifice shape has been preliminary studied. In order to get a proper control, an optimized study is made on the design of the orifice shape, which has internal plates with the holes. The results show the force acting on the body due to the periodic movement highly depends on the number of holes on the plate and the height of the water level. Therefore, the optimum shape of the orifice and the height of the water level should be confirmed by a series of experiments.
