They were classified into drugs for clearing away heat, drugs for detoxification, drugs for promoting diuresisr.
Methanol extracts of 27 Brazilian plant samples and 10 oriental medicinal plant samples (27 families), using spectrophotometric and paper disc agar diffusion methods under anaerobic conditions, were tested in vitro for their growth-inhibiting activities against Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Clostridium perfringens, and Bacteroides fragilis. The responses varied with bacterial strains, plant species, and tissues sampled. In a test with B. longum and B. bifidum(20 mg/disc), extracts of Acanthopanax sessilifolinus stem bark and Ampelozizyphus amazonicus leaves strongly inhibited the growth of B. longum, whereas other plant samples did not inhibit any intestinal bacteria tested. At 5 mg/disc, adding extracts of Aralia eleta, Euterpe oleracea, and Syzygium guineense to the media strongly inhibited the growth of C. perfringens and B. fragilis without growth inhibition of B. adolescentis, B. longum, and B. bifidum. Extracts of Jacaranda mimosifolia and Ulmus paraifolia significantly inhibited the growth of C. perfringens and B. fragilis as well as B. adolescentis. These results may be indications of at least one of the pharmacological actions of the five Brazilian plants but not oriental medicinal plants tested.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of medicinal plants application as an edible functional food resources. We carried out to develop a traditional functional beverage by using hot-water extraction of 4 medicinal plants(Polygonatun sibiricum, Ophiopogonis radix, Lycii fructus, Schizandriae fructus) and we examined the effects of drink on physiological function in aorta relaxation. Thus, the effect of developed beverage on phenylephrine induced contraction of isolated rat thoracic aorta. Contractile force was measured with force displacement transducer under 1.5g loading tension. Brix, pH and titratable acidity of developed drink were 9.5%, 3.3 and 0.22%. The approximate nutritional composition of beverage was carbohydrate, 5.98%, crude protein, 0.70%, crude fat, 0.20% and crude ash, 0.20%. Developed beverage contained K(4.00 ㎎%), Na(3.68 ㎎%), Ca(2.54 ㎎%), Mg(1.60 ㎎%) and Fe(0.29㎎%). The contraction forces by injection of phenylephrine in isolated thoracic aorta were significantly low in each experimental groups compared with control groups, These results that developed drink with medicinal plants can be used as a functional material to decrease aorta contraction.

This study was aimed to evaluate an agonistic activity to benzodiazepine receptor of several medicinal plants, which have been used as sedatives in oriental medicine. Methanol extracts of medicinal plants which were used in this study inhibited the binding of $[^3H]Ro15-1788$, a selective benzodiazepine receptor antagonist to benzodiazepine receptor of rat cortices. Inhibitory activity of Cyperus rotundus was observed to be the highest among the tested medicinal plants. Methanol extracts of Cyperus rotundus and Zizypus jujuba inhibited a $[^3H]flunitrazepam$, a selective benzodiazepine receptor agonist, binding to benzodiazepine receptor. GABA significantly enhanced the inhibition of $[3H]flunitrazepam$ binding by Cyperus rotundus and Zizypus jujuba, and these positive GABA shifts supported the strong possibility of agonistic activity to benzodiazepine receptor. From these results, it may be concluded that the substance or substances with neurochemical properties characteristic of a benzodiazepine receptor agonist may be important components and contribute to the sedative property of these medicinal plants.
Objective : For the purpose of developing Korean herbology of the plants to Polyporaceae in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : The examined herbological books and research paper which published domestically and abroad. Results : 1. Polyporacease plants (raised in Korea) are devided into 31 classes with 59 species. Among them, 26 species in 19 classes were found serviceable, which indicates 44 % of all Polyporacease plants. 2. Among those 59 species, $Coriolus$$Phellinus$$Trametes$ includes 5 species. $Ganoderma$, a medicinal plant, includes 3 species. 3. Dividing the serviceable plants of Polyporacease, the fruit body family had the largest number; 25. 4. Out of plants Polyporacease, neutral taste plants was 17 species and sweet taste was 14 species. 5. Only 8 species of Polyporaceae plants were found to enterd into the spleen and heart. 6. 11 species were found to prevent cancer, 7 species were found to dispel wind-dampness and Alleviate edem antittusive and antasth matic. 7. There were no toxic species in the Plyporaceae. Conclusion : There were totaled to 31 genera and 59 species in Polyporaceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 19genera, 26 species, some 44% in total.
Ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is a perennial herbaceous plant which grows very slowly. It takes about 3 to 4 years from seeding to collecting the ripe seeds and the ginseng propagation is very difficult. and so, it is very difficult to breed ginseng plant. Ginseng tissue culture was started from at 1960, and ginseng commercial product by in vitro callus culture was saled, however upto now, regenerants were not planted to soil normally. Recently, plant genetic engineering to produce transgenic plants by introducing useful genes has been advanced greatly. In a present paper, transformation of ginseng plants was achieved by co-cultivation with Agrobacterium harboring the binary vector coding Proteinase-II gene, which confer resistant or tolerant to insect pests, The binary vector for transformation was constructed with disarmed Ti-plasmid and with double 35S promoter. The NPT II gene and introduced genes of the transgenic ginseng plants were successfully identified by the PCR. Especially the transgenic ginseng plants were regenerated using new techniques such as repetitive single somatic embryogenesis.
Schizonepeta tenuifolia (Korean name "Hyung- Gae") is an oriental medicinal plant that is widely used in Korea, China and Japan. S. tenuifolia (Hyung-Gae) has many pharmacological activities and is mostly used for many medicinal preparations. The dried aerial part (spikes and stems) of three oriental medicinal plants, S. tenuifolia (Hyung-Gae), Agastache rugosa (Kwhak-Hyang) and Elsholtzia ciliata (Hyang-Yoo) belonging to the same family, mint family Labiaceae, have such similar shape and smell that it is difficult to differentiate between them. The trnL-F regions of chloroplast DNA of the three medicinal plants were sequenced and used as targets in multiplex PCR reaction to identify S. tenuifolia. After alignment of trnL-F sequences of the authenticated plant samples, one single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) specific to S. tenuifolia was found. Based on this SNP, a new primer was designed that specifically amplifies the trnL-F region of S. tenuifolia. The established multiplex-PCR was proven to be effective in the differentiation of commercial S. tenuifolia samples from A. rugosa and E. ciliata. This rapid and accurate molecular method is highly promising for use in the food industry.
Several medicinal Plants in Jeonbuk are screened for the contraction or relaxation to the acetylcholine and histamine induced contraction in the isolated rat and guinea pig's trachea smooth muscle. Contractions evoked by acetylcholine and histamine were inhibited by Flos Farfarae, Poria and Rhizoma alismatis, but contractions were increased Tuber Pinelliae, Herba Chelidonii, Fructus Qusqualis, Radix Asari, Semen Perillae, Folium Artemisiae and Fructus Schizamdrae increased the contractions evoked by acetylcholine and histamine. Radix Puerariae, Radix Osterici Koreani, Rhizoma Zingiberis siccatum, Radix Sanguisorbae, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Fructus gardeniae and Cortex Magnoliae did not effect the contractions evoked by acetylcholine and histamine.

Korean medicinal plants were screened for their inhibitory activity against HIV-1 protease. The inhibitory activity of protease was determined by incubating the extracts in reaction mixtures containing protease and substrate $His-Lys-Ala-Arg-Val-Leu-(p-NO_{2}-Phe)-Glu-Ala-Nle-Ser-NH_{2}$ to perform proteolytic cleavage reactions. In this study the twenty six extracts from medicinal plants were investigated. Of the extracts tested, the extracts from the stem of Morus alba. exhibited the strongest activity with inhibition of 81% at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/ml$. The extracts of the flower of Saxjfraga stolonifera, and stems of Euonymus japonica and Castanea crenata showed appreciable inhibitory activity (>50%) against HIV-1 protease at same concentration.
An oriental medicinal database was used from medicinal plants for screening of anticancer agents. The prescription frequency and dosage of medicinal plats in 170 anticancer prescriptions were analyzed. From the total prescription score of each medical plant, it was found that high-scored medicinal plants have been widely studied in the previous research on the cancer treatment. Consequently, dangui, hwangui, banha, bachul, jinpy, insam, bacjakyak, deahwang, chungoong, jimo, chunnamsung, omija, hyunggae, huekchook, banggi, boclyung, osooyou were selected as raw materials for the screening of anticancer agents.
