Objective : The aim of this study is to assess the impact of chronic atopic dermatitis (AD) on quality of life (QoL) as well as the economic burden associated with oriental medical treatment on adult patients with chronic AD in Korea. Methods : The EQ-5D health states, existence and duration of AD in the 2007 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used to obtain the study subjects. A questionnaire including the questions on direct medical and direct non-medical costs associated with oriental medical treatment for adult patients with AD was specifically designed. Twenty-nine, members of the Korean Oriental Medical Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Dermatology Society (KOMOODS), completed the questionnaires. Results : The incidence of AD was around 3.09% in 2007 NHANES (sample survey, n=2981). Three months and above in duration of disease was 1.35%. The QoL data revealed as follows: 0.932 in non-chronic AD, 0.916 in chronic AD, and 0.908 in non-AD. We also stratified our analysis by age. The QoL data in 40's was statistically significant (P<0.023). But, no significant differences were reported in 20's, 30's, and 50's. The total direct medical costs of oriental medical treatment for AD was about 2,560,717 Won, and total direct non-medical costs was about 605,125 Won in a year. Conclusions : This study might be applied to find the evidence of economic evaluation in oriental medicine for AD. More rigorous studies are warranted.
This study was carried out to compare perceptions about nursing activities in oriental medical hospital settings. Data were collected from 47 patients hospitalized in an oriental medical hospital, and 41 nurses and 47 oriental medical doctors working in four oriental medical hospitals from July 10th to Sept.20th, 1991. The findings of this study are as follows. 1. There were significant differences in the perceptions about physical nursing activities between patients ( M=44.07) and nurses (M=48.44) (t=-3.09. p=0.003) , and between nurses and oriental medical doctors (M=41.47) (t=-5,20. p=0.000). 2. There were no differences in perceptions about psychological and emotional nursing activities between patients ( M=27.64) and nurses (M=28.52) (t=-1.02, p=0.310), but there were differences between nurses and oriental medical doctors ( M=24. 31) (t=-5.31, p=0.000). 3. There were differences in perceptions about observation, recording and implemention of medical care activities between patients (M=53.65) and nurses (M=57.08) (t=-2.15, p=0.034), but there were no differences between nurses and oriental medical doctors (M=57.28) (t=0.14, p=0.892). 4. There were no differences in perceptions about nursing management activities between patients (M=24.88) and nurses (M=26.42) (t=-1.91, p=0.059), but there were differences between nurses and oriental medical doctors (M=24.25) (t=-3.24, p=0.002).
Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of oriental medical therapy on obesity and the progress of weight loss through an oriental obesity program. Methods The subjects were treated from January 2008 to February 2009 in J Korean Medical Hospital. Herbal medical Hospital. Herbal medicine, electrolipolysis, auricular acupuncture were performed during the treatment period. We checked the change of weight every treatment time and measured the body composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA) every 2 weeks. Results The progress of weight loss was steady in the first 4 weeks except for the sixth weight check. After 4 weeks treatment, the weight loss was 3.52${\pm}$1.98Kg and 4.83${\pm}$2.68%. Total fat mass measured by BIA significantly decreased 2.58${\pm}$1.30Kg after 4 weeks. Age and the weight loss were significantly negative correlated. Conclusions Oriental obesity treatment could be effective on obesity, but further studies would be needed for the foundation of a clinical guideline reflecting various factors.

To develop a new natural cosmetic hair care product for scalp treatment, we investigated the effect of enzyme modified (Viscozyme, Pectinex) oriental medical prescriptions on hair growth and melanogenesis. Enzyme modified oriental medical prescriptions showed the antioxidative effect, inhibitory effects on lipoxygenase activity and $5{\alpha}$-reductase activity and melanogenic activity. In human irritation test, they did not show any adverse effect. Based on these results, we suggest that enzyme modified oriental medical prescriptions may potentially be used in a cosmeceutical hair care product for scalp treatment.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to find out the characteristics of children patients who had been treated in the Oriental Medical Hospital due to traffic accidents. Methods The study was carried out with 121 children patients who visited the Oriental Medical Hospital from April 2011 to March 2012 and was analyzed by reviewing the patients' charts. Results In the distribution of sex the ratio between boys and girls were similar, but regarding the age, 0~6 year-old group was more than that of 7~15 year-old group. In the traffic accident patterns, 87.6% of the entire children patients were injured by car crash. The highest type in the collision between cars was rear-ending impact. The most patients (48.8%) visited our hospital for oriental medical treatment in less than 3 days after the traffic accident. The number of the first visitors in the Oriental Medical Hospital were 77 (63.6%) and those who visited other western hospitals before and were 44 (36.4%). The most frequent duration of admission and treatment in OPD was less than 7 days. Sleeping disorders (37.1%) were diagnosed the highest in 0~6 year-old group and C-spine sprain (49.0%) was diagnosed the highest at 0~7 years-old group. Herb medications were prescribed to relieve anxiety for 0~6 year-old group and for 7~15 year-old group, those were prescribed to activate blood eliminating phlegm and to normalize Qi flow. The highest effective treatment period was less than 7 days. Conclusions This data suggested that the oriental medical care could be more effective in treating children victims of traffic accidents by confirming many different symptoms depending on the age.
The Korea-Uzbekistan Friendship Hospital of Korean Medicine has been providing care and education of Korean medicine in Uzbekistan since 1997, while overseas expansion of Korean medicine is expanding each year. The status of these activities is investigated to suggest methods of development of Korean medicine in Uzbekistan. The hospital treats about 15000 people in Uzbekistan for free every year. Among patients visiting the hospital, the distribution of female, age 50s to 70s is most common, Uzbek, Russian, and Korean are common ethnicities, musculoskeletal disease, neurologic disease and gastrointestinal disease are common ailments. In addition, the hospital has educated students of Tashkent Medical Academy and doctors belonging to the Department of Acupuncturists of Korean Oriental Medicine of the Uzbekistan Medical Association. Korean medical care, education and research in the field of systematic support on a long-term roadmap should be continued for developing Korean medicine on Uzbekistan.

This study examined the knowledge and understanding of integrative medicine in Korea, specifically conflicts between western and oriental medicine within Parallel (Dual) health care systems. Qualitative methodology using grounded theory guided semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Western Medical Doctors (W.M.D., n = 6), Oriental Medical Doctors (O.M.D., n = 5) and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (T.C.M.P., n = 4). Thematic analysis was used to determine broad themes from the interviews. 15 professionals (W.M.D. (40%), O.M.D. (33%), T.C.M.P. (27%), 10 males (67%) and 5 females (33%), mean age 45) were interviewed, recorded, and transcribed. Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: systematic conflicts, integration and future directions. Subthemes of systematic conflicts included: credibility of Oriental Medicine, commercial imperatives, maintaining social standing of O.M.D., professional qualifications and lack structures supporting collaborative practice. Integration subthemes included lack of academic linkage and clarity for appropriate triage, opposing medical paradigms and limited social imperative. Future directions should include: social justification, guarantee of oriental medicine legitimacy, role of government and understanding of scientific evidence. To successfully integrate dual medical systems there is a need to address differences in social-environmental factors and perceptions of scientific understanding, as well as developing strong academic links in clinical practice.

Koreans has regarded a fair skin as the supreme beauty emphasizing the white beauty so long, and mugwort and garlic were used as whitening materials. Also, it was recorded that the people of Eub-Rue (挹婁) applied some lard to protect their skin from cold and prevent frostbite, and this must be a great way of beauty care in the light of modern sense. The basic beauty care materials currently used as skin care materials, include natural minerals like loess or mud, and the ones composed of a highly polymerized compound. However, by reason that they are produced without consideration of an individual skin condition, and rather bring about a number of problems leading to skin diseases. To complement this issue, using natural resources would have priority to make up for the weak points. For this, we decided to select and study "Dongeuibogam".
