  • Objectives : The purpose of this literature review was to clarify the procedure of historical changes centered on medications of 10 kinds of headache in "Donguibogam"(東醫寶鑑). Methods : We searched the database-China Academic Journals(CAJ). For papers published since 2007-2011, which are classified in categories. Results : 1. By searching medications of 10 kinds of headache in "Donguibogam"(東醫寶鑑), 32 prescriptions were selected. 2. We reviewed the books, which is clarified as the reference of the aforementioned 32 prescriptions in "Donguibogam"(東醫寶鑑). 3. 31 books mentioned in head part of "Uibujeonrok"(醫部全錄) were also selected as the reference, and we searched the aforementioned 32 prescriptions in the former 31 books. Conclusions : 1. The herb medications of 10 kinds of headache in "Donguibogam"(東醫寶鑑) were mostly affected by "Seuideukhyobang"(世醫得效方). 2. 21 prescriptions among 32 prescriptions in "Donguibogam" were directly quoted from the books that the prescriptions were firstly appeared and 11 prescriptions among the 32 prescriptions were re-quoted from other books that succeeded the source books. 3. We suspect that the components, dosages of the herb medications of headache in chapter Du(頭) of "Donguibogam" were revised, according to the author's clinical experience and circumstances. 4. Cheon-gungdajo-san(川芎茶調散) was the most cited prescription in medical books. A total of 12 books were recorded from "Hwajegukbang(和劑局方)" to "Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)".

  • The leaves of Hippophae rhamnoides were extracted with methanol and then further fractioned with hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water in order to investigate biological activity. Two flavonol glycosides were isolated and identified from ethyl acetate soluble fraction, which showed the strongest antioxidant activity ($RC_{50}$ = 4.33 ${\mu}g/ml$). Isolated two compounds have shown strong free radical scavenging activity. Especially, quercetin 3-O-glucoside ($RC_{50}$ = 2.60 ${\mu}g/ml$) was more active than ${\alpha}$-tocopherol ($RC_{50}$ = 4.67 ${\mu}g/ml$). Total phenol and flavonoid contents were the highest to 4.17 and 1.14 mg/ml in the ethyl acetate soluble fraction. In addition, ethyl acetate soluble fraction was shown to the strongest ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$ = 137.88 ${\mu}g/ml$) among the fractions. The results suggest that leaves of H. rhamnoides could be a potential source of natural antioxidant.

Methods : Four patients diagnosed with delirium by DSM-$IV^{TM}$ was treated Onbaek-won(Wenbai-yuan), Jugeo-hwan(Zhouju-wan) and herb medicine. The severity of delirium was assessed by using MMSE-K. And then, we investigated and analyzed the clinical symptoms of the patients. Results : After oriental medical treatments, the symptoms of delirium were disappeared and MMSE-K score was improved. Conclusions : It could be suggested that oriental medical treatments were effective on delirium. Further study of the effect of oriental medical treatments on delirium is needed in the near future.

The Effect of Herb-acupunctures of Bojoongiggi-tang (Buzhongyiqi-tang), Ginseng Radix, and Astragali Radix on Immune Responses in Rats (보중익기탕(補中益氣湯), 인삼(人蔘) 및 황(黃)기 약침(藥鍼)이 MTX로 약침(誘發)된 백서(白鼠)의 면역기능저하(免疫機能低下)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Objectives : To investigate the effects of herb-acupunctures of Qi tonification herbs or formula on the rat immune depression induced by an anticancer drug, methotrexate (MTX) Methods: Animals were divided into 5 groups; Normal control group was not given any treatment. Immune depression was induced by oral administration of 1mg/kg MTX b.i.d for 4 days in Control, Sample I, II, and III groups. We treated on CV 4 (Guanyuan) with saline, Bojoongiggi-tang (Buzhongyiqi-tang), Ginseng Radix and Astragali Radix herb-acupunctures in Control, Sample I, II, and Ill groups, respectively. In both blood and spleen, the assessment of CD4+ T-cell count, CD8+ T-cell count, CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio was performed. Results: Here we show that 3 herb- acupuncture groups have an influence, to some extent, on CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell counts and CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio in both blood and spleen. Astragali Radix herb-acupuncture, in particular, was found to have significantly increased CD4+ T-cell count in blood and CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio in blood and spleen. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that herb-acupunctures of Bojoongiggi-tang (Buzhongyiqi-tang), Ginseng Radix and Astragali Radix may have an influence over rat immune depression induced by MTX.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the inhibitor effects of an traditional oriental herb, Sophora flavescens on the pancreatic & cardiac side effects of chemotherapy were studied by using Bl6-BL6 melanoma-injected C57BL6 mouse tumor model. In this study, the effects of an traditional oriental herb, Sophora flavescens, on the side effects of chemotherapy were studied using B16 melanoma-injected C57BL6 mouse tumor model. Anticancer drugs widely used in clinical situation. Sophora flavescen has significant effect on the reduction of the side effects of chemotherapy. Water extract of Sophora flavescens significantly inhibited cisplatin-induced increase of amylase (AMY) which is a good indicator of pancreatic toxicity. Sophora flavescens extract does not decrease the anti-tumor activity of cisplatin showing that it can selectively inhibit side effects of anticancer drugs preserving beneficial effect. Theses results suggest a possibility that Sophora flavescens extract can be used for cancer patients for the reduction of the side effects and improving the quality of life during chemotherapy of cancer patients.

  • After treating a patient suffering from metacarpophalangeal joint extension disturbance which is caused by posterior interosseous nerve palsy, some results are gained as follows. The symptom of posterior interosseous nerve palsy is simillar to the it of radial nerve palsy. But posterior interosseous nerve palsy isn't accompany with wrist drop. posterior interosseous nerve palsy is accompany with metacarpophalangeal joint extension disturbance. This symptom is caused by posterior interosseous nerve palsy. Posterior interosseous nerve palsy is correspond to MAMOKBULIN(麻木不仁), SUTONG(手痛), SUGI(手氣) in oriental medicine. The cause of this case on oriental medicine is Deficiency of qi and blood. Treatment which based on cause of oriental medicine-herb medication, acupuncture treatment- have a good effect to patient.

  • This study was performed to report the effectiveness of oriental medical treatment and muscle energy techniques on a patient with piriformis syndrome. The patient was diagnosed as piriformis syndrome and treated with acupuncture, herb medicine, physical therapy and muscle energy techniques. We have evaluated curative efficacy with measuring changes of visual analogue scale and physical examination according to period of hospitalization. After treatment, pain and visual analogue scale decreased. Physical examinations were recuperated nearly to normal findings and ambulation was improved. These results suggest that oriental medical treatment and muscle energy techniques were effective on patient with piriformis syndrome.
