  • The solvent extraction and cleanup processes for the simultaneous gas-liquid cliromatographic determination of 16 kinds of organochlorine pesticide residues were investigated. The pesticides were extracted out from-various crops with the aqueous acetone solution acidified (pH < 1.5) by adding conc. $H_3PO_4$. Most of the pesticides were partitioned from the solution with petroleum ether. Evaporated the extracting solvent, the residues were dissolved in ethylether-petroleum ether (6 : 94) eluent and eluted through the Florisil column activated at 650$^{\circ}$C for 2.5hrs. The extraction efficiency was over 94% and impurities were effectively removed by the column chromatography.

  • Pesticide residues in some fruits collected at Noeun wholesale market, Daejeon were surveyed and assessed its risk. In 120 samples, the detection rate of pesticide was 70.8% and the rate exceed MRL was 1.67%. Highly detection rate of commodities was apple, peach and grape. Organophosphorus, organochlorine and pyrethroid insecticide were found with similar rate relatively, but most of fungicides were procymidone(dicarboximides) and chlorothalonil(organochlorine). The order of detected pesticide were chlorothalonil, chlorpyrifos, fenvalerate, procymidone, deltamethrin and EPN. In order to assess risk estimated intake amount of each pesticide was compared to ADI. Although some peach were exceed MRL the total amount and uptake pesticides was less than 1.22% comparing to ADI.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using HR-GC/MS for the rapid screening of dieldrin residues in soils. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) of organochlorine pesticides such as dieldrin, were analyzed in sedimentary rock and granite rock collected from greenhouses, Niigata, Japan. Dieldrin remains in Japanese farming soils, more than 40 years after their use as insecticides was prohibited. The averages in soil moisture ranged from 2.79% to 7.20% in soils derived from sedimentary rock and from 25.59% to 31.40% in soils derived from granite rock. Mean concentrations of dieldrin residues in sedimentary rock and granite rock were $39.7ng\;g^{-1}$ and $40.51ng\;g^{-1}$, respectively. Dieldrin residue was detected at a slightly higher concentration in granite rock than sedimentary rock samples. There was no consistency between the two soils or between surface and subsurface soils. The coefficients of variation of the two soils were 10.6% and 8.7%, respectively. These results suggest that our high-resolution mass spectrometry detector (HR-GC/MS) is effective at analyzing residual organochlorine pesticides in soil. In order to increase the precision and sensitivity for chemical analysis of POPs, high-resolution gas chromatography coupled with a HR-GC/MS is highly recommended.

  • This study was carried out for the dietry safely based on the level of pesticide residues In 13 kinds of agricultural products consumed in Kyonggi-Do. Korea. From June to October 2000, sixteen organochlorine pesticides in 397 samples were analyzed by using GC/ECD and GC/MSD. According to the results, endosulfan were detected in 27(7.8%) samples and chlorothalonil were detected in 4(1.0%) samples. Detection ranges of endosulfan were 3.7437∼ 0.0488ppm for lettuce, 2.1902 ∼0.1423ppm for spinach, 2.4909 ∼0.0786ppm for mallow and 3.2333∼0.3997ppm for mustard leaf, respectively Chlorothalonil were 5.8097 for lettuce and 0.8962ppm for spinach. Consequently, six agricutural products were detected more than the maximum residue limits in Korea Endosulfan were detected In 5(1.8%) samples and cholrothalonil were detected in 1(0.3%) sample. Detection rates of endosulfan sulfate(45.9%) of agricultural products were more than $\alpha$-endosulfan(28.5% ) and $\beta$-endosulfan (23.9% ) .

  • Atmospheric concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were measured at Gosan, Jeju in November 2001 and spring 2002, each time for two weeks. Primary target pollutants were organochlorine pesticides, coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (co- PCBs), and dioxin/furans listed in the Stockholm Convention adopted in May 2001. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also measured in order to understand the overall characteristics of the POPs distribution as well as PM$_{2.5}$, a potent carrier of POPs. In the latter part of the measurement period of November 2001, almost every pollutant of combustion origin including dioxin/furans went high probably due to influence of emissions in the nearby area. The characteristics of atmospheric environment at Gosan in this period were rather close to urban areas far from those of a background area. A severe dust storm swept for three days at the end of the measurement period of spring 2002. However, changes in pollutant concentrations were relatively small except PM$_{10}$. Nevertheless, increases in particulate PAHs and OCDD (octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins), mostly present in fine particles, were observed. Trends in organochlorine pesticide variations were mixed although possible volatilization of DDT residues from soil was inferred from the measurements of spring 2002.2.2.

  • In recent years, organophosphorous (OP) pesticides have largely replaced the use of organochlorine pesticides and have been widely used in agriculture because of their rapid breakdown in water and their low environmental persistence. Consumers are directly or indirectly exposed to organophosphorous pesticides through several food groups in which a significant amount of pesticide residues have been found.(omitted)

  • After selecting four places in the main shellfish habitat, 118 items of the sample were collected in the mud flat from August to October in 1983, in order to analyze organochlorine pesticide residues by a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. The results obtained were summarized as follows; ${\alpha}-BHC,\;{\gamma}-BHC\;&\;PCNB,\;heptachlor,\;{\gamma}-endosulfan,\;{\beta}-endosulfan,$ p, p'-DDE, dieldrin, o, p'-DDT and p, p'-DDT were detected in the range from 2 to 98 percent and their levels of mean residues ranged from trace to 0.041ppm, in the order of ${\gamma}-BHC\;&\;PCNB,\;{\alpha}-BHC,\;heptachlor{\approx}{\alpha}-endosulfan{\approx}p, p`-DDE{\approx}dieldrin{\approx}{\beta}-endosulfan{\approx}$o, p'-DDT, and p, p'-DDT. The mean of total residues in regions was Kangjin(0.058ppm), Kwangyang(0.080ppm), Yoch'on (0.016ppm), and Yonggwang(0.75ppm). ${\gamma}-BHC\;&\;PCNB$ peak were separated by column packed with DC-200. PCNB was identified by making a PCA(pentachloroaniline), the reduced derivative of PCNB, and this confirmed that PCNB residues were detected in the soil sample.

  • To obtain basic information for the safe use of pesticides, the aquatic environment of 5 major rivers was surveyed in April and August 1982 for organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticide residues. Regardless of sampling times and sites, pesticide residue levels were very low. Of the organophosphorus pesticides surveyed, only IBP and diazinon were detected in water samples while fenthion, fenitrothion, chlorpyriphos, chlorpyriphos-methyl, chlorfenvinphos, phenthoate, and edifenphos were not detected in any water samples. Residue levels and detection frequencies of IBP or diazinon were much higher in water samples collected in August than those collected in April. Detection frequencies of organochlorine pesticides, on the other hand, were high, but their actual residue levels were very low. BHC was detected nearly in all water samples while aldrin was not found in any samples. Detection frequencies of heptachlor, endosulfan, and o.p`-DDT were considerably high but dieldrin and p.p`-DDT were detected in a few water samples and their residue levels were also very low.
