  • Latest developments on hybrid nanostructured materials fabricated by applying self-assembly strategies on organic/inorganic nanotemplates are discussed. Within this frame, numerous functional nanomaterials including arrays of composite metal/semiconductor nanoparticles, planar waveguides and functional multilayer thin films are generated using self-assembled polymers as templates or building blocks. In particular, surface plasmon resonance based optical sensing is employed to investigate nanofabrication processes occurring in nanoscale dimention. We also suggest unprecedented pathways to hybrid supramolecular multilayer nanoarchitectures in 1D or 2D geometry via layer-by-layer self-assembly.

  • Inverter surge resistant enameled wire was prepared with an organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposite, and the effect of ambient temperature on the insulation lifetime of the enameled wire in the form of twisted pair was studied by a withstanding voltage tester. The organic polymer was Polyesterimide-polyamideimide (EI/AI) and the inorganic material was a Nano-sized silica (average particle size : 15 nm). The enamel thickness was 50 μm and the ambient temperature was 100, 150, 200, and 250, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that Nano-sized Silica were evenly dispersed in EI/AI. There were many air gaps in a twisted pair, therefore, when voltage was applied to the twisted pair, enamel erosion took place in the air gap area because of partial discharge accordi, ng to Paschen’s law. As ambient temperature increased, insulation lifetime decreased according to Arrhenius relationship, which was explained by the increasing mobility of polymer chains in EI or AI. And insulation breakdown voltage value at 10 kHz was 1,864.5 sec (31.1 min), which is 1.9 times higher than at 20 kHz, 981.6 sec (16.4 min).

  • Encapsulation of organic based devices is essential issue due to easy deterioration of organic material by water vapor. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a promising solution because of its low temperature deposition and quality of the deposited film. Moisture permeation has a mechanism to pass through defects, Thin Film Encapsulation using inorganic / organic / inorganic hybrid film has been used as promising technology. $Al_2O_3$ / Polymer / $Al_2O_3$ multilayer film has shown excellent environmental protection characteristics despite of thin thicknesses of the films.

  • This study demonstrates a new method for the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid particles composed of an inorganic silica shell and organic core particles. The organic core particles are prepared with a uniform size using droplet-based microfluidic technology. In the process of preparing the organic core particles, uniform droplets are generated by independently controlling the flow rates of the dispersed phase containing photocurable resins and the continuous phase. After the generation of droplets in a microfluidic device, the droplets are photo-polymerized as particles by ultraviolet irradiation at the ends of microfluidic channels. The core particle is coated with a nano complex composed of polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and phosphate ion (Pi) through strong non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction under optimized pH conditions. The polyamine nano complex rapidly induces the condensation reaction of silicic acid through the arranged amine groups of the main chain of PAH. Therefore, this method enabled the preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid particles coated with inorganic silica nanoparticles on the organic core. Finally, we demonstrated the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid particles in a short time under ambient and environmentally friendly conditions, and this is applicable to the production of organic-inorganic hybrid particles having various sizes and shapes.

  • Hydrogen producing acidogenic microorganisms were self-immobilized using organic-inorganic hybrid polymer within 5 minutes. During the continuous tratment of synthetic wastewater at a hydraulic retention time of 20 hours, at 37$^{\circ}C$, pH 5.0, the self-immobillized granules were maintained in a stirred tank reactor. The black colored granules gradually became milky. Image analysis showed that the mean diameter of the milky colored granules ranged from 1.5 to 20. mm. The maximum bio-gas procuction rate was 380 ml/L/hy and the concentration of H$_2$was around 50%, while no methane was detected. Granular ECP was extracted and its content was measured to elucidate the role of the organic-inorganic hybrid polymer. Further increases of granule concentration are expected to increase the hydrogen production rate.

  • Optical transparency and high diffraction efficiency are two essential factors for high performance of the photopolymer. Optical transparency mainly depends on the miscibility between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer, while diffraction efficiency depends on the refractive index modulation between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer. For most of organic materials, the large refractive index difference between two polymers accompanies large structural difference that leads to the poor miscibility and thus poor optical quality via light scattering. Therefore, it is difficult to design a high-performance photopolymer satisfying both requirements. In this work, first, we prepared a new phase-stable photopolymer (PMMA) with large refractive index modulation and investigated the optical properties. Our photopolymer is based on modified poly (methyl methacrylate) as a polymer binder, acryl amide as a photopolymerizable monomer, triethanolamine as initiator, and yellow eosin as a photosensitizer at 532 nm. Diffraction efficiency over 85% and optical transmittance over 90% were obtained for the photopolymer. Second, Organic-inorganic nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing an aromatic methacrylic monomer and a photo- initiator in organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices. The film properties could be controlled by optimizing the content of an organically modified silica precursor (TSPEG) in the sol-gel matrices. The photopolymer film modified with the organic chain (TSPEG) showed high diffraction efficiency (> 90%) under an optimized condition. High diffraction efficiency could be ascribed to the fast diffusion and efficient polymerization of monomers under interference light to generate refractive index modulation. The TSPEG modified photopolymer film could be successfully used for holographic memory.

  • A variable surface coating with the potential to fulfill the requirements of industry will be presented. Via controlled radical polymerization methods from a functionalized Polymethylsilsesquioxane delivers an inorganic-organic block copolymer, which can be easily modified and tuned for different applications. Spin coated or dip coated on various substrates show promising results. By using different block copolymers the contact angle on a silicon wafer can be varied in a range of $90^{\circ}\;up\;to\;145^{\circ}$ After curing and complete condensation a perfect adhesion on glasses, plastics and metals is achieved.

  • The organic-inorganic hybrid polymer thin films were deposited using the gas phase method which known as molecular layer deposition (MLD). Titaniumchloride (TiCl4) and 1,4-phenylenediamine (PD) were used as monomers to deposit hybrid polymer. Self-terminating nature of TiCl4 and PD reaction were demonstrated by growth rate saturation versus precursors dosing time. Infrared spectroscopic and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to determine the chemical composition and state of hybrid polymer thin films. Layer by layer growth was showed by increasing UV-VIS absorption peak of hybrid polymer thin films.

  • A series of inorganic-organic hybrid membranes were prepared with a systematic variation of titanium dioxidenanoparticles content. Their water uptake, methanol permeability and proton conductivity as a function of inorganic oxide content were investigated. The results obtained show that the inorganic oxide network decreases the proton conductivity and water swelling. It is also found that increase in inorganic oxide content leads to decrease of methanol permeability. In terms of the morphology, membranes are homogeneous and exhibit a good adhesion between inorganic domains and the polymer matrix. The properties of the composite membranes are compared with the standard nation membrane.
