  • Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)(PTT) fiber was pretreated with organic solvent/water solution of various compositions. The organic solvents used in this experiment were benzyl alcohol, n-buthanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF). Density of the fibers were investigated as a measure of crystallite region. The dye uptake increased in the order of pretreatment with hot water < untreated < 5% benzyl alcohol < 100% benzyl alcohol < 90% benzyl alcohol; hot water < untreated $\risingdotseq$ 5% butanol < 100% beutanol < 90% butanol; hot water $\risingdotseq$ 5% DMF < untreated < 90% DMF < 100% DMF. The dye uptake increases with increase of crystallinity. It seems likely that the recrystallization process during the pretreatment with organic solvent/water solutions leads to an increase in the microvoid and then a large increase in the dye uptake. Also the dyeing rate increased and the dyeing transition temperature decreased with the pretreatments. The results obtained are corresponds with the plasticization of the fiber structure formed during the pretreatrnent.

Development of Simple Solvent Treating Methods to Enhance the Efficiency of Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

  • The interface morphology of organic active layers is known to play a crucial role in the performance of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. Especially, a controlled nanostructure with a large contact area between electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) layers is necessary to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the cells since the short exciton diffusion lengths in organic semiconductors limit the charge (hole and electron) separation before excitons recombination. In this work, we developed simple solvent treating methods to fabricate a nanostructured DA interface and applied them to enhance the PCE of ZnPc/C60 based small molecule OPV cells. Interestingly, it was observed that the solvent treatment on the donor layer prior to the deposition of the acceptor layer resulted in a significant decrease in PCE, which was due to an existence of undesirable voids at the DA interface. Instead, the solvent vapor treatment after the DA bilayer formation led to densely packed and well dispersed DA contacts. Consequently, 3-fold enhancement of PCE as compared to the untreated bilayer cell was accomplished.

  • Three different types of extraction processes, which used supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCCO_2$) and organic solvent, were attempted to improve the extraction yield of oil from Chlorella vulgaris: cosolvent-modified $SCCO_2$ extraction, $SCCO_2$ extraction with ultrasonic sample treatment in organic solvent, and static extraction with organic solvent followed by dynamic $SCCO_2$ extraction. Among these, the last $SCCO_2$ extraction process was found to be most effective in the extraction of oil. Compared with pure $SCCO_2$ extraction, the extraction yield of oil was observed to increase about 7 times.

  • Improvement of the photovoltaic efficiency via exposure of organic solar cells to solvent-vapor at room temperature is reported. Carbon disulfide ($CS_2$) vapor treatment can induce Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) self-organization into ordered structure leading to enhanced hole transport and light absorption. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the organic solar cells can be increased from 0.89 to 1.67% by solvent-vapor treatment.

  • Ultimate objective of industrial hygiene is the prevention of health impairment that may result from exposure to chemicals at workplace. Workers in solvent thinner-using occupation environment may be highly exposed to VOCs (volatile organic compounds) because solvent thinner has been used extensively such as painting, spraying, degreasing, coating and so on in Korea. The purpose of this study was to recognize, evaluate, and propose the control methods of VOCs from solvent thinner-using workplace. Five target volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, and m-xylene) were monitored in H company of Shiwa Industrial Complex and analyzed in perosnal, occupational indoor and outdoor during working hours simultaneously. Engineering control such as local ventilation should be made in considering the long-term exposure, though measured VOCs concentration did not exceed the workplace exposure standards. In addition, air cleaning device should be installed in local ventilation because Shiwa Industrial Complex has had the serious ambient air pollution. Currently, environmental purification using $TiO_2$ photocatalyst have attracted a great deal of attention with increasing number of recent environmental problems. In this study, $TiO_2$ sol coated on the ceramic bead was prepared by sol-gel method and the photodegradation of target compounds was investigated in gas phase by the exposure to UV-A lamp(365nm) in a batch system.

Carrier Gas Assisted Solvent Vapor Treatment for Surface Nanostructuring of Molecular Thin Films

  • In this study, the variation in surface morphology of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films treated with a flow of acetone vapor assisted by nitrogen carrier gas was investigated. The CuPc nanorods with similar dimensions were well dispersed throughout the whole film surfaces after ~20 min. of treatment. However, the electronic absorption spectra only changed slightly, which indicates that molecular stacking was not altered during treatment. This treating method is simple and more advantageous compared to other solvent treating technologies such as mixed solvent spray treatment using organic solvents and water since it requires relatively mild treating conditions and does not need the presence of water.

Nutritional Quality and Physicochemical Characteristics of Defatted Bovine Liver Treated by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide and Organic Solvent

  • Defatted bovine liver (DBL) is a potential source of protein and minerals. Supercritical carbon dioxide ($SC-CO_2$) and a traditional organic solvent method were used to remove lipid from bovine liver, and the quality characteristics of a control bovine liver (CBL), bovine liver defatted by $SC-CO_2$ ($DBLSC-CO_2$) at different pressures, and bovine liver defatted by organic solvent (DBL-OS) were compared. The $DBLSC-CO_2$ samples had significantly higher (p<0.05) protein, amino acid, carbohydrate, and fiber contents than CBL and DBL-OS. There was a higher yield of lipid from CBL when using $SC-CO_2$ than the organic solvent method. SDS-PAGE analysis demonstrated that the CBL and $DBLSC-CO_2$ had protein bands of a similar intensity and area, whereas DBL-OS appeared extremely poor bands or no bands due to the degradation of proteins, particularly in the 50 to 75 kDa and 20 to 25 kDa molecular weight ranges. In addition, $DBLSC-CO_2$ was shown to have superior functional properties in terms of total soluble content, water and oil absorption, and foaming and emulsification properties. Therefore, $SC-CO_2$ treatment offers a nutritionally and environmentally friendly approach for the removal of lipid from high protein food sources. In addition, $SC-CO_2$ may be a better substitute of traditional organic solvent extraction for producing more stable and high quality foods with high-protein, fat-free, and low calorie contents.

솔벤트 도핑과 후처리 공정에 따른 전도성 고분자 PEDOT : PSS의 특성 변화 (Effect of Solvent Doping and Post-Treatment on the Characteristics of PEDOT : PSS Conducting Polymer)

  • 전도성 고분자인 poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT : PSS)는 우수한 전기 전도도와 광투과도, 유연성을 가지고 있기 때문에 유기태양전지와 유기발광소자의 투명전극으로서 많은 각광을 받고 있다. PEDOT : PSS의 전기 전도도는 솔벤트를 도핑함에 따라 큰 폭으로 증가한다는 사실은 잘 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 솔벤트의 도핑과 솔벤트 후처리 공정에 따른 PEDOT : PSS 박막의 전기 전도도와 구조적 특성 변화를 연구하였다. 솔벤트 도핑으로 PEDOT : PSS의 전도도는 884 S/cm까지 증가하였고, 후처리 공정을 통해서 1131 S/cm의 전도도 값을 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 전도도의 증가는 PSS 물질이 빠져나가거나 구조적인 재배열에 따른 전도성 PEDOT 입자의 접촉 면적이 증가함에 따른 것으로 사료되고, 광학적인 방법으로 PSS의 추출을 관찰하였다. 솔벤트 후처리 공정은 PEDOT : PSS 박막의 전도도를 향상하는 매우 효과적인 방법으로 확인되었고, 저가형 플렉서블 유기전자소자의 투명전극으로써의 사용이 적합할 것으로 예상된다.

  • As far as we handle industrial products, the painting process is prerequisite; and the preparatory treatment of materials is, therefore, indispensable to the above process. However, it is a matter for regret that people are liable to overlook the importance the treatment of materials at the preparatory stage, giving themselves up to the surface of finished goods. The preparatory treatment of materials is like backstage personnel (operations) in dramatic performance; the performance cannot be successful without the support of backstage operations in surface treatment. The various methods which are being applied widely as preparatory treatment are as follow: (1) the method by using hand tools such as grinders, etc. (2) the method with blasting (3) the method with chemical coating (4) the method by getting rid of fatty substance with organic solvent The methods No. 1 and No. 2 are in use mainly for larger structures, and those No. 3 and No. 4, either singly or combined, are applied for mass-produced, smaller items (acid cleaning is applied for getting rid of rust, as the case may be). The method No. 3 is used mainly as anti-rust by forming zinc phosphate film on the surface of steel plate or enhancing the bonding power of paints by taking advantage of irregular surfaces of films. Recently are no the market steel plates treated directly with film-coating by omitting the process No. 3. Furthermore, those goods painted include not only nonferrous goods but plastics and elastomer. The present discourse describes the cleaning process by using the steam of organic acid, picked up from among No. 4, and its equipment applied.

낙산사 출토 호박사리호 보존처리에 관한 연구 (A Study of Conservation Treatment of the Amber Relic of the Buddha Excavated from the Naksan Temple)

  • This study shows the research of causes of deterioration of the amber from foreign cases. It also presents the conservation treatment as well as tests to examine the effect of the organic solvents on the amber in order to find reversible and safe reinforcing agent which will prevent further damage of the artefact. The result showed that there was no noticeable change in the weight of the artefact as well as on the appearance of the surface when Mineral spirit(White spirit), which is aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and Xylene, aromatic hydrocarbons group was applied. Reinforcement and restoration was carried out using Paraloid(R) B67, which has a broad option for the solvent, in Xylene. Finally, it is recommended that the use of polar organic solvent in the conservation treatment of amber artefacts should be limited.
