  • In order to promote recycling of animal and plant residues, it is necessary to prepare detailed statistics on the sources, generation amount and the state of disposal so that waste recycling companies and enterprises can obtain the information easily. Also, the recycling methods specified in the law should be appropriate. For this, the study reviewed the appropriateness of detailed classification of animal and plant residues and permitted recycling methods in the Enforcement Regulations of the Waste Management Act of Korea. For improvement of the detailed classification, the study conducted literature review on European and Japanese ones. Additionally, we visited slaughterhouses of livestock and poultry, vegetable oils manufacturing companies, starches and glucose or maltose manufacturing companies, which generate the waste and recycle the waste, to grasp the status of recycling in Korea. Based on the results, the study proposes improvement measures for the detailed classification and the permitted recycling types in the law.

  • This study assessed the effects of treatment with sap extract from onion residues postharvest and purslane on the quality and quantity of organic onions. At the bending stage, onions treated with the sap extract showed vigorous growth, with higher plant heights, more leaves, and longer sheath lengths than untreated onions. The onion yield was significantly increased when the plant was treated with extracted sap as compared with that of untreated plants (p<0.05). The bulb weight distribution of onions in the mixed onion and purslane treatment was also significantly increased (~300 g) as compared with that of the other treatment (p<0.05). Except for CaO and S, the mineral content of the onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract mixture was higher than those of onions in the other treatment. The hardness of onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract was significantly increased (8% and 20%, respectively) as compared with that of onions produced from plants treated with the onion extract only or no treatment (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the sugar contents of the onions produced from extract-treated and nonextract-treated plants. Postharvest, the content of inorganic components (phosphate, calcium, sulfuric acid, and manganese) was higher in soil treated with the onion extract than in soil treated with the onion and purslane extract and non-treated soil. It can be concluded that residues left after onion harvests and purslane extract can be used as natural and environmentally friendly materials for the cultivation of organic onions.

  • Six low-molecular-weight organic acids from decomposing plant residues were analyzed, which were formic, acetic, succinic, malic, tartaric, and citric acids. Straws of rice, barley, wheat, and rye were put under acid- hydrolysis after decomposition for different periods of time. The contents of organic acids in the hydrolysates were determined. 1. The relative molarity of a low-molecular-weight organic acid varies with the passage of the time of decomposition. 2. In general, formic and acetic acids were the major low-molecular-weight organic acids in all samples. 3. Malic acid was found to be only in a trace amount in rice and barley straws, and in their decomposed residues. 4. The relative molarities of total monocarboxylic acids(formic and acetic) increased with the progressing time of decomposition, far exceeding those of dicarboxylic and tricarboxylic acids combined together. 5. Formic and acetic acids were compensatory for each other and they were supposed to persist for a long time in soil environment.

  • In this paper, the carbon resources recycling of the overview of coffee waste generation in Vietnam. Since few years, there has been a significant research studies was done in the areas of coffee waste generation areas and also waste water generation from coffee production. The coffee residue (solid) and waste water (liquid) both are caused the underground water contamination and also soil contamination. These residues contain high organic matter and acid content leads to the severe threat to environment. In second stage of coffee production process, the major solid residue was generated. Various solid residues such as spent coffee grounds, defective coffee beans and coffee husks) pose several environmental concerns and specific problems associated with each type of residue. Due to the unlimited usage of coffee, the waste generation is high. At the same time, some researchers have been investigated the spent coffee wastes are the valuable sources for various valuable compounds. Biodiesel or biomass productions from coffee waste residues are the best available utilization method for preventing the landfill problems of coffee waste residues.

  • The study of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere is critical to understand the role of aerosols in human health and climate. Using standardized thermal optical transmittance methods, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were determined using a combustion sampling system for four types of agricultural crop residues (rice straw, red pepper stems, soybean stems, and green perilla stems) and eight types of forest trees (pine stems, pine needles, ginkgo stems, ginkgo leaves, maple stems, maple leaves, cherry stems, and cherry leaves). The aerosol particles between 0.056 and $5.6{\mu}m$ in size were analyzed using a Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI). In the current study, the Carbonaceous Thermal Distribution (CTD) by carbon analyzer was discussed in order to understand the carbon fractions from the twelve types of biomass burning. Also, the concentration of OC, EC, WSOC, and water insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) detected in the emissions were described.

  • The cheaper and high-quality media are necessary to produce the year-round mushroom. For low input and high productivity, this experiment was carried out to screen the proper supplementary materials on media among agricultural by-products; bean-curd residues, dried orange peel, chinese drug residues and celery cabbage leaf. Judging by chemico-physicals, the used agricultural by-products was possible for an additives on mushroom media. Bean-curd residues added to media raised the amount of organic matter, nitrogen and carbon. In Pleurotus ostreatus, the conventional media yielded 20 pilus cap, 72g per a bottle, but adding 10 percent bean-curd residues produced 12 pilus cap, 77g and an increase yielded 7%, and 10 percent orange peel took 12 pilus cap and an increase yieled 11%. In Agrocybe aegerita, added to media, except chinese drug residues, increased performance compared with conventional media, produced 98g per a bottle. Especially, the bean-curd residue increase 15 percent in productivity.

  • Organic waste, which is defined as wastes derived from various biological organisms that contain more than 40% of organic materials, is generated about 100 million tons per year in Korea. These organic wastes are now controlled by several governmental entities, under different rules and regulations, leading to the improper management and inefficient treatment. Therefore, integrated management system is primarily needed for the efficient recycling of organic waste. In this study, six kinds of organic wastes, which are food waste, sludges(sewage, waste water, night soil), animal excreta, animals and plants residues, and three kinds of recycling by-products(compost, feed, anaerobic digestion by-products) made of organic wastes, were analyzed for their physical and chemical characteristics. On the basis of this result, a possibility for the efficient recycling of organic waste was investigated.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of animal slurry on nitrogen uptake of hairy vetch and growth of chinese cabbage in cropping system. Hairy vetch was seeded on September 20 in 2003 . We examined the effect of cover crop(hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and slurry application(0, l00, 200kg N/ha) on yield and N uptake. Dry matter yield and nitrogen uptake of hairy vetch were measured. The chinese cabbage succeeding cover crop was harvested in 2004. The nitrogen uptake of hairy vetch was 84, 121, 148kg N/ha respectively, when the slurry application was 0, 100 and 200kg N/ha. In addition. N uptake of hairy vetch at the plot of 100kg and 200 kg N/ha slurry were 44% and 76% higher than that of the plot without slurry application respectively. Slurry application of hairy vetch could increase nitrogen uptake by application of green manure at the harvesting time. the content of organic matter and P-content of soil with hairy vetch plot was higher than that of fallow plot due to inhibition of soil erosion. The organic matter levels tend to improve with the addition of hairy vetch. Hairy vetch could improve soil quality by reducing erosion compared with bare fallow. The green manure of hairy vetch with animal slurry maintained soil nutrient and reduced nitrogen fertilizer of chinese cabbage. The hairy vetch residues decomposed rapidly releasing half of their residues within 40 days after burial. The yield of chinese cabbage was 90% in the plot of manure of hairy vetch compared with chemical fertilizer. The yield in the plot treated with green manure of hairy vetch and 50% of chemical fertilizer was reduced 5% less than that of chemical fertilizer. Therefore, it was estimated that the green manure of hairy vetch-chinese cabbage cropping system could reduce nitrogen chemical fertilizer as much as 84~148kgN/ha. the green manure of hairy vetch with animal slurry maintained soil nutrient and reduced nitrogen fertilizer of chinese cabbage.
