The performance and the operational problems of UASB(Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor for treatment of dairy wastewaters were investigated. Synthetic milk wastewater was successfully treated up to the loading rate of 3.9kg $COD/m^3.day$, with a specific gas production rate of 1. 23 I/I. day and a COD removal efficiency of over 90%. However, the sludge rising was observed at the loading rate of 2.1kg $COD/m^3.day$, due probably to the formation of scum layer at the surface of settling compartment. The BMP(biochemical methane potential) of raw milk wastewater and ice cream wastewater, measured by using SBT(serum bottle test), were 0.135 and 0.66ml $CH_4/mg\;COD_{added}$, respectively. The sludge activity increased more than 8 times from 0.159g $COD-CH_4/g$ VSS. d during 90 days of operation.

This study was performed to examine the effect of copper on the biodegradability, nitrification, denitrification and oxygen uptake rate (OUR) using batch reactor and continuous flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR) of anaerobic/anoxic/oxic ($A_2/O$). The results of this study can be summarized as follows. In the case of the effect of copper on organic treatment, the bad effect initiated when it was above 4.5 mg/L copper with batch reactor and above 2.0 mg/L copper with CSTR. Concerning the case on nitrification and removal of nitrogen, it showed bad effect when copper was above 4.5 mg/L with batch reactor for nitrification and 1.0 mg/L with CSTR for the removal of nitrogen. The bad effect on the removal of phosphorus began when it was 4.5 mg/L copper with batch reactor and 2 mg/L copper with CSTR. In the case of OUR, it decreased as microbial activity was affected when copper concentration was above 1.5 mg/L in both case of batch reactor and CSTR.

This study was performed to examine the effect of zinc on the biodegradability, nitrification, denitrification and oxygen uptake rate (OUR) using batch reactor and continuous flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR) of anaerobic/anoxic/oxic ($A^2/O$). The results of this study can be summarized as follows. In the case of the effect of zinc on organic treatment, zinc had no effect up to 12 mg/L with batch reactor but biodegradability was lowered when it was above 3.0 mg/L with CSTR. Concerning the case on nitrification and removal of nitrogen, nitrification rate was lowered when zinc was above 6.0 mg/L with batch reactor and removal rate of nitrogen was lowered when zinc was above 3.0 mg/L with CSTR. Removal rate of phosphorus was lowered when it was above 6.0 mg/L zinc with batch reactor and above 3.0 mg/L zinc with CSTR. In the case of OUR, it decreased as microbial activity was affected when zinc concentration was above 3.0 mg/L in CSTR.
Biodegradation of fat, oil, and grease (FOGs) plays an Important role in wastewater management and water pollution control. However, many industrial food-processing and food restaurants generate FOG-containing waste waters for which there Is no acceptable technology for their pretreatment. To solve these problems, this study evaluated the feasibility of effective FOG-degrading microorganisms on the biodegradation of olive oil and FOG-containing wastewater. Twenty-two strains capable of degrading FOGs were isolated from five FOG-contaminated sites for the evaluation of their FOG degradation capabilities. Among twenty-two strains tested, the lipase-producing Pseudomonas sp. strain D2D3 was selected for actual FOG wastewater treatment. Its biodegradability was performed at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and pH 8. The extent of FOG removal efficiency was varied for each FOG tested, being the highest for olive oil and animal fat (94.5% and 94.4%), and the lowest for safflower oil (62%). The addition of organic nitrogen sources such as yeast extract, soytone, and peptone enhanced the removal efficiency of FOGs, but the addition of the inorganic nitrogen nutrients such as $NH_4$Cl and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ did not increase. The $KH_2PO_4$ sources in 0.25% to 0.5% concentrations showed more than 90% degradability. As a result, the main pathway for the oxidation of fatty acids results in the removal of two carbon atoms as acetyl-CoA with each reaction sequence: $\beta$-oxidation. Its lipase activity showed 38.5 U/g DCW using the optimal media after 9 h. Real wastewater and FOGs were used for determining the removal efficiency by using Pseudomonas sp. strain D2D3 bioadditive. The degradation by Pseudomonas sp. strain D2D3 was 41% higher than that of the naturally occurring bacteria. This result indicated that the use of isolated Pseudomonas sp. strain D2D3 in a bioaugmentating grease trap or other processes might possibly be sufficient to acclimate biological processes for degrading FOGs.
In our previous study, a surfactant-coated Candida rugosa lipase immobilized in microemulsion-based organogels was exploited for the synthesis of ethyl isovalerate. In the present study, we are focusing on the effective reuse of lipase immobilized in microemulsion-based organogels (MBGs) in terms of retainment of the catalytic activity. As water is one of the co-products in esterification reactions, the removal of water becomes a priority to allow the reaction to work in the forward direction and to prevent back hydrolysis. Taking this fact into consideration, the lipase-containing microemulsion-based organogels were given pretreatment and/or several intermittent treatments with dry reverse micellar solution of AOT in organic solvent during repeated cycles of ester synthesis. The pretreated MBGs with dry reverse micellar solution exhibited lower water content and higher initial rates of esterification in comparison with untreated freshly prepared MBGs. The esterification efficiency of untreated MBGs started decreasing after 5 cycles of reuse and was almost completely lost by the end of the $8^{th}$ cycle. In contrast, pretreated MBGs exhibited a gradual decrease in esterification efficiency after 5 cycles and retained about 80% of the initial activity at the end of the $8^{th}$ cycle. The intermittent treatment of MBGs after every 3 cycles resulted in enhanced reusability of immobilized lipase for up to 9 cycles without significant loss in esterification activity, after which it resulted in a slow decrease in activity with about 27% lower activity at the end of the $12^{th}$ cycle. Furthermore, the treatment conditions such as concentration of AOT in liquid dessicant and time of treatment were optimized with respect to our system. The granulated MBGs proved to be better in terms of initial esterification rates (1.2-fold) as compared with the pelleted MBGs.

For the need of bio-degradable flocculant in stage of wastewater treatment, some cultural conditions of bioflocculant production were optimized with Aeromonas hydrophila KH-54. About 260 strains of type culture and bacteria isolated from marsh, pond, activated sludge, etc were examined for their ability to flocculate kaolin particles and swine wastewater. Among them, KH-54 showed the highest flocculating activity and was identified as Aeromonas hydrophila according to the cultural, morphological and physiological properties. The maximum production of the flocculant secreted by Aeromonas hydrophila KH-54 was observed in culture medium containing 2.0% mannitol, 0.05% ammonium chloride, 0.02% potassium phosphate dibasic, 0.01% $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ and 0.05% yeast extract at initial pH 7.0 when cultured on rotary shaker controlled at $25^{\circ}C$ and 150 rpm. Under the optimized condition, the flocculating ability reached to 770 units/ml of kaolin flocculating activity and 81% of NTU removal efficiency against swine wastewater after 4 days cultivation. The bioflocculant was also effective on various organic wastewaters other than swine wastewater, showing NTU removal rate ranging from 92% to 34%.
Catalytic filter is capable of performing shallow bed dust filtration plus a catalytic reaction, promoted by a catalyst deposited in its inner structure. Such a feature may allow potential cost and space reduction in several environmental applications. Dust filtration and halogenated volatile organic compound (1,2-dichlorobenzene) destruction were carried out in a lab-scale reactor. $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ supplied by MaGreen, which showed high catalytic acitivity at low temperature, was used as a catalyst. P-84 that can be operated under $250^{\circ}C$ was used as a felt. The catalytic activity and filtration efficiency of catalytic filters were investigated under the operating conditions, including temperature, face velocity, and dust concentration. The catalytic activity of catalytic filter increased with increasing temperature and the amount of catalyst loaded. The test results showed that the filtration efficiency was primarily affected by the face velocity. Pressure drop variations as a function of time were investigated for a variety of conditions. In case of virgin filter, a dramatic decrease in the pulse interval and a slightly increase in the base line pressure drop were observed. A relatively slow pressure drop build-up was recorded for the catalytic filter due to smooth and slippery surface characteristics of nanofiber. The catalytic filter indicated that high filtration efficiency over 99.98% and high catalytic activity over 90% at 1 m/min and $210^{\circ}C$.

Coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons and anthracite were tested for an adsorption and biodegradation performances of nitrogenous chlorinated by-products such as chloropicrin, DCAN, DBAN and TCAN. In early stage of operations, an adsorption performance was a main mechanism for removal of nitrogenous chlorinated by-products, however as increasing populations of attached bacteria, the bacteria played a major role in removing nitrogenous chlorinated by-products in the activated carbon and anthracite biofilter. It was also investigated that the compounds were readily subjected to biodegrade. Whilst the coal- and coconut-based activated carbons were found most effective in adsorption of the compounds, the anthracite was worst in adsorption of the compounds. Highest populations and activity of attached bacteria were shown in the coal-based activated carbon. The populations and activity of attached bacteria decreased in the order: coconut-based activated carbon > wood-based activated carbon > anthracite. The attached bacteria were inhibited for removal of the compounds at temperatures below $10^{\circ}C$. The attached bacteria were more active at higher water temperatures$(20^{\circ}C\;<)$ but less active at love. water temperature$(10^{\circ}C\;>)$. The removal efficiencies of the compounds obtained using coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons and anthracite were directly related to the water temperatures. In particular, water temperature was the most important factor for removal of the compounds in the anthracite biofilter because the removal of the compounds depended mainly on biodegradation. Therefore, the main removal mechanism of the compounds the main mechanism on the removal of the compounds using activated carbon was both adsorption and biodegradation by the attached bacteria. The observation suggests that using coal-based activated carbon is the best for removal of nitrogenous chlorinated by-products in the water treatment.

Conventional deodorization filters using soil and compost reach the capacity limitation of deodorization in short period, because its removal mechanism primarily depends on adsorption. Therefore, in this study the experiment was performed on the removal of ammonia which is a strong inorganic malodor, frequently emitted from night soil treatment plants and sewage treatment plants, by seeding activated sludges on the bio-peat containing higher organic contents, water conservation capacity, permeability and lower pressure drop. As a result, in raw peat filter natural ammonia outlet was observed in consequence of pH increase resulted from ammonia ionizing in liquid phase. Ammonia removal mechanism primarily depended on the adsorption onto the anion colloidal substances in peat. In peat bio-filter, theoretical ammonium salts ratio was higher than that of raw peat, resulted from slight pH increase by microorganism activity, however, the experimetal value of ammonia-nitrogen accumulated in bio-peat was lower than that of raw peat because of nitrification by nitrifying bacteria. In the initial reaction period, adsorption was predominant in the ammonia removal mechanism, but nitrification was conspicuous after the middle period. Mass balance of nitrogen was established using experimental data of input $NH_3$ loading, output $NH_3$ loading, $NH_4{^+}$-N, $NO_x$-N, and Org-N. The critical time of unsteady state, which is the maximum activating point of microorganism in bio-filter, was determined using experimental data, and the ammonia adsorption curve was computed using regression analysis. On the basis of the results obtained by above analysis, the delay days for the saturation of adsoption capacity in peat bio-filter was calculated.

[ $TiO_2$ ] was deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on glass surface under various sputtering parameters such as discharge power($0.6{\sim}5.2\;kW$, substrate temperature($R.T{\sim}350^{\circ}C$), Ar and $O_2$ flow ratio with $0{\sim}50\;sccm$($Ar+O_2$ 90 sccm) and about 1 mtorr of pressure. TiO-N thin film was prepared under same sputtering conditions for $TiO_2$ thin film except flow ratio($Ar+O_2+N_2$ 90 sccm). The sheet resistance of thin films deposited under these parameters was measured to analyze electronic characteristic and thin film's thickness(${\alpha}$-step), surface roughness(AFM) and formation construction(FE-SEM, XRD) were also measured to draw optimal sputtering parameters. In order to evaluate photo-activity of thin film($TiO_2$, TiO-N) made in optimal parameters for removal of pollutants, toluene among VOCs and Suncion Yellow among reactive dyes were chosen to probe organic compounds for photo-degradation. It was shown that the photo-catalytic thin films had a significant photo-activation for the chosen contaminants and especially TiO-N thin film showed maximum efficiency of 33% for toluene(5 ppm) removal in visible-light range.
