This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of applying levels of organic liquid fertilizer (OLF) on growth and fruit quality of hot pepper. The OLF was made with compositions of chicken dung : rice bran : soybean meal (2:1:1). Hot pepper was applied with 5 treatments; control (chemical fertilize), OLF-1.0X (standard applying levels), OLF-0.7X (70% of standard applying level), and OLF-1.3X (130% of standard applying level). The plant height was reduced at 23cm in the OLF-1.0X treatment compared to control of 293cm. The number of hot pepper fruits was significantly increased. The content of capsaicin in the ripened pepper decreased by 23.6% in the OLF-1.0X treatment with $253mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ compared with control of $331mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, but the content of free sugar increased by 19.5%. The content of capsaicin and soluble solid content in OLF-1.3X treatment were significant different with other treatments. The yield of red pepper in OLF-1.0X treatments increased by 15% with $4,190kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ compared to control of $3,643kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$, and OLF-1.3X and OLF-0.7X treatments showed increase by 10% and 6%, respectively.

BACKGROUND: The use of green manure and compost as organic fertilizer may increase crop yield and soil fertility due to improved soil nutrient availability and soil organic matter content (SOM). This study aimed to investigate the effects of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.) and compost application on red pepper growth, yield, fruit quality and soil health. METHODS AND RESULTS: The treatments were no fertilizer (CON), chemical fertilizer (CF), hairy vetch (HV), and livestock compost+HV (LC+HV). Red pepper seedlings (70 days old) were transplanted and maintained in experimental plots for 140 days. Plant dry weight, micro- and macronutrient contents of plants and soil chemical properties were determined. All fertilizer treatments significantly increased plant dry weight. Fruit yield was significantly highest with HV treatment. As for nutrient content, plants in HV and LC+HV treatments have significantly higher K and Ca contents than the other treatments. Regarding soil properties, HV and LC+HV application significantly altered the soil chemical properties. Significantly higher SOM was observed in HV and LC+HV treated soils. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that short-term application of hairy vetch and compost is an effective alternative to the conventional chemical fertilizer to increase fruit yield red pepper and improve soil health.
The antioxidant activity of ground red pepper, ethyl alcohol extracts of ground red pepper peel and alcohol extracts plus organic acid was studied by using edible soybean oil as a substrate. All the substrates were stored in a dark place at $45.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ respectively. The results of the study were as follow: 1. Ground red pepper, black pepper and cassia exhibited slight antioxidant activity and there was no significant difference in antioxidant activity among them. 2. Although both ground red pepper peel and red pepper seed showed antioxidant activity, ground red pepper peel exhibited greater antioxidant activity than ground red pepper peel did. 3. Ethyl alcohol extracts of red pepper peel showed strong antioxidant activity, but the residue did not show the antioxidant activity. 4. The antioxidant activity of the ethyl alcohol extracts of red pepper peel increased in direct proportion to the concentration of the extracts. 5. In connection with the synergistic effect of organic acid to the ethyl alcohol extracts of red pepper peel, citric acid showed a very strong synergistic effect on the antioxidant activity of red pepper, while ascorbic acid showed a weak effect. On the other hand, phosphoric acid showed an accelerating effect on the oxidation of oils. 6. The maximum antioxidant activity of the ethyl alcohol of ground red pepper peel was observed at the citric acid concentration of 0.04%, when tested at various concentration of citric acid.
This study suggests the yield forecast model for chilli pepper using artificial neural network. For this, we select the most suitable network models for chilli pepper's yield and compare the predictive power with adaptive expectation model and panel model. The results show that the predictive power of artificial neural network with 5 weather input variables (temperature, precipitation, temperature range, humidity, sunshine amount) is higher than the alternative models. Implications for forecasting of yields are suggested at the end of this study.

Capsaicinoids in red pepper powder are known to show anti-bacterial effects; however, their effects during kimchi fermentation are not known. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various concentrations of capsaicinoids on kimchi fermentation. Five sets of kimchi samples were prepared using 0 mg/kg (control), $98.34{\pm}5.34mg/kg$ (mild), $243.47{\pm}3.71mg/kg$ (medium), $428.63{\pm}30.78mg/kg$ (hot), and $1,320.49{\pm}28.27mg/kg$ (extreme) capsaicinoid. The characteristics of each kimchi sample, including pH, acidity, organic acid, sugars, sugar alcohol, capsaicinoid content, and microbial community were periodically investigated during fermentation. Kimchi with red pepper powder shows significantly higher acidity than control kimchi, whereas pH values were the same. Organic acid in kimchi with red pepper powder was higher than in control kimchi, probably caused by higher lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts in kimchi samples with red pepper powder. Our results show that addition of red pepper powder decreased Leuconostoc spp. counts in the bacterial community. In particular, Lactobacillus sakei and Leuconostoc gelidum counts increased and decreased, respectively, with increasing capsaicinoid content of red pepper powder added to kimchi. Overall, the results of this study indicate that physicochemical properties and LAB such as L. sakei and L. gelidum are influenced by capsaicinoid content. However, further studies are necessary to investigate the effects of the percentage of red pepper powder in kimchi on fermentation to provide practical guidelines for producing standardized kimchi.
This study was conducted to select some effective organic materials for supplying mineral nutrients at the later red-pepper growing period under organic farming system, and to evaluate the application effect. Nutritional characteristics of organic materials, nitrogen release pattern during liquefying the selected organic materials, and crop growth were examined. Among 18 organic materials, meals such as soybean, rapeseed, cottonseed, and sunflower seed except for gluten had greater nitrogen content. Total nitrogen content liquefied solution of the mixture of organic materials and molasses or yogurt was measured after 7 days of the liquefying, thereafter, the mixture of rapeseed meal and yogurt showed the highest nitrogen, reaching about $3,000mg\;L^{-1}$. Selected liquid manure, mixture of rapeseed meal and yogurt, was applied 8 times to red-pepper plants with fertigation or foliar application. Total nitrogen of leaves at 150 days after transplanting was the highest (4.4%) in the treatment of foliar application of the selected liquid manure, whereas shoot dry weight and fresh fruit yield were the greatest in the treatment of fertigation.
Drought stress is one of the major yield affecting factor for pepper plant. The effects of PGPRs were analyzed in relation with drought resistance. The PGPRs inoculated pepper plants tolerate the drought stress and survived as compared to non-inoculated pepper plants that died after 15 days of drought stress. Variations in protein and RNA accumulation patterns of inoculated and non-inoculated pepper plants subjected to drought conditions for 10 days were confirmed by two dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and differential display PCR (DD-PCR), respectively. A total of six differentially expressed stress proteins were identified in the treated pepper plants by 2D-PAGE. Among the stress proteins, specific genes of Cadhn, VA, sHSP and CaPR-10 showed more than a 1.5-fold expressed in amount in B. licheniformis K11-treated drought pepper compared to untreated drought pepper. The changes in proteins and gene expression patterns were attributed to the B. licheniformis K11. Accordingly, auxin and ACC deaminase producing PGPR B. licheniformis K11 could reduce drought stress in drought affected regions without the need for overusing agrochemicals and chemical fertilizer. These results will contribute to the development of a microbial agent for organic farming by PGPR.

To enhance the antimutagenic and anticancer activities of chinese cabbage kimchi, 13 kinds of kimchi, which were different kinds and levels of sub-ingredient added kimchi, were prepared and fermented at 15℃ for 1 day and then at 5℃ up to pH 4.3. The antimutagenic effects of the methanol extracts of the kimchi were studied by using Ames mutagenicity test in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and SOS chromotest in E. coli PQ37. Among the kimchi samples, high ratio of red pepper powder(7%) and garlic(2.8% or 5.2%) added kimchi, 1% chinese pepper powder added kimchi and organic cultivated chinese cabbage kimchi significantly reduced(p<0.05) the mutagenicity induced by aflatoxin B1(AFB1) in Ames test and SOS response against N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) in SOS chromotest, and also the kimchi inhibited more effectively(p<0.05) the survival and growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells than the standarized kimchi on the SRB assay, MTT assay and growth inhibition test. These results suggest that the antimutagenic and anticancer activites of kimchi can be increased by the sub-ingredients such as organic cultivated chinese cabbage, red pepper powder, garlic and chinese pepper powder.
This experiment was carried out to determine optimal concentration of organic liquids for the improvement of antioxidant in pepper. As human beings enter the age of 100, they are naturally recognized as a standard of high quality agricultural products for safety and improvement of functional materials. Tomatoes are among the most consumed vegetables in the world and there is a growing interest in varieties with high functional content. However, there is a limit to the improvement of functional materials of certain varieties, so it is necessary to study the improvement of materials by cultivation physiology and environmental conditions. The test material was sown on March 15th in Wanju province and on June 15th in rain shelter house using pepper "suppermanidda" varieties. To investigate the optimum concentration of organic liquids for the improvement of antioxidant, 15 kinds of treatments were carried out including control, tomato liquid fertilizer etc. The liquid fertilizer of organic material was treated with 6 times of irrigation, and the analysis of nutrients and antioxidant was done by harvesting pepper on the September 10th. The contents of beta-carotene was increased in the T3, T4, T12 treatments, vitamin C was in the P14 treatments, flavonoid, polyphenol were in the P12 treatment compared to the control. In T12 treatment, flavonoid increased by 115.9%, polyphenol by 121.7%, beta-carotene by 117.2% and vitamin C by 136.1% compared to the control. There was no significant difference in the growth characteristics and characteristics of pepper fruit of pepper according to liquid fertilizer treatment. Therefore, it has been confirmed that the organic antioxidant is affected by the liquid fertilizer treatments of organic materials and it is necessary to study the environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture and photosynthesis.
In order to examine the factors affecting herbicidal injury of pepper, crop injury and growth response of 2 red pepper cultivars and 2 sweet pepper cultivars to napropamide and pendimethalin were evaluated under defferent conditions of soil texture, organic matter, soil temperature and seeding depth in the greenhouse. Growth response of 4 pepper cultivars was also examined by roos dipping to napropamide and pendimethalin. More inhibition of top leaf growth by root dipping to napropamide was occurred in red pepper cultivars than in sweet pepper cultivars. However, sweet pepper cultivars showed more severe inhibition of top leaf growth by root dipping to pendimethalin compared to red pepper cultivars. Crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was more severe in sandy soil than in loam soil and this trend was more remarkably shown in sweet pepper cultivars. Crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was reduced with the increase in organic matter especially in cv. Walgeykwan and cv. Orient al Pimento. As seeding depth of pepper cultivars became deeper, crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was reduced in cv. Walgyekwan and cv. Oriental Pimento.
