Microwave Dielectric Characteristics of $Ba(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ - $La(Mg_{2/3}Nb_{1/3})O_3$ Solid Solutions with Crystal Structure (결정구조에 의한 $Ba(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ - $La(Mg_{2/3}Nb_{1/3})O_3$고용체의 마이크로파 유전 특성)

  • The microwave dielectric properties and their related structural characteristics in solid solutions of (1-x) $Ba(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ -x $La(Mg_{2/3}Nb_{1/3})O_3$ (BLMN) have been investigated by measuring the dielectric constant${\varepsilon}r)$, Q value and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency$({\tau}f)$ and by observing the crystal structure using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Microwave dielectric properties showed characteristic features for specific composition. Dielectric constant$({\varepsilon}r)$ showed maximum value at the composition which corresponds to the phase boundary between 1:2 ordered and 1:1 ordered structure. The increase in ${\varepsilon}_r$ may be caused by the rattling of ions by incorporating smaller ions and the disordered structure. The variation of temperature coefficient of resonant frequency${{\tau}_f)$ was investigated in terms of oxygen octahedra tilting.

Development of High Strength Mg-Zn-Gd Alloys by Rapid Solidification Processing

  • Rapidly solidified ribbon-consolidation processing was applied for preparation of high strength bulk Mg-Zn-Gd alloys. Mg alloys have been used in automotive and aerospace industries. Rapid solidification (RS) process is suitable for the development of high strength Mg alloys, because the process realizes grain-refinement, increase in homogeneity, and so on. Recently, several nanocrystalline Mg-Zn-Y alloys with high specific tensile strength and large elongation have been developed by rapidly solidified powder metallurgy (RS P/M) process. Mg-Zn-Y RS P/M alloys are characterized by long period ordered (LPO) structure and sub-micron fine grains. The both additions of rare earth elements and zinc remarkably improved the mechanical properties of RS Mg alloys. Mg-Zn-Gd alloy also forms LPO structure in -Mg matrix coherently, therefore, it is expected that the RS Mg-Zn-Gd alloys have excellent mechanical properties. In this study, we have developed high strength RS Mg-Zn-Gd alloys with LPO structure and nanometer-scale precipitates by RS ribbon-consolidation processing. $Mg_{97}Zn_1Gd_2$ and $Mg_{95.5}Zn_{1.5}Gd_3$ and $Mg_{94}Zn_2Gd_4$ bulk alloys exhibited high tensile yield strength (470 MPa and 525 MPa and 566 MPa) and large elongation (5.5% and 2.8% and 2.4%).

Microstructure and Microwave Dielectric Properties of (1-x) Ba (Co1/3Nb2/3)O3-zBa(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 Ceramics

  • Ba (Co$_{1}$ 3/Nb$_{2}$ 3/)O$_3$(BCN) has a 1:2 ordered hexagonal structure. Q-value of BCN increased with increasing sintering temperature however, it significantly decreased when the sintering temperature exceeded 140$0^{\circ}C$ Ba (Co$_{1}$ 3/Nb$_{2}$ 3/)O$_3$(BZN) has the 1:2 ordered hexagonal structure and the degree of the 1 : 2 ordering decreased with the increase of the sintering temperature. The Q value of the BZN increased with increasing the sintering temperature and BZN sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 6h has a maximum Q-value. For (1-x) Ba (Co$_{1}$ 3/Nb$_{2}$ 3/)O$_3$-zBa(Zn$_{1}$ 3/Nb$_{2}$ 3/)O$_3$[(1-x)BCN-xBZN] ceramics the 1:2 ordered hexagonal structure was observed in the specimens with x$\leq$0.3 and the BaNb$_{6}$ O$^{16}$ second phase was found in the specimens with x$\geq$0.6. Grain Growth, which is rotated to the BaNb$_{6}$ O$^{16}$ second phase occurred in the specimens with x$\geq$ 0.5. In this work, the excellent microwave dielectric properties of $\tau$r=0.0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$$\varepsilon$r=34.5 and Q,$\times$f=97000GHz sere obtained for the 0.7BCV-0.3BZN ceramics sintered at 1400$0^{\circ}C$ for 20h.

  • The crystal structure of A2+(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3,(A2+=Sr2+ and Ca2+)ceramics was studied usig X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electrion microscopy(HRTEM). Ba(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (SMN) has the 1:2 ordered monoclinic structure which has the anti-phase tilt of octahedra. The type of tilting in SMN was considered to be a$^{\circ}$a$^{\circ}$c- or a­a­c$^{\circ}$ Ca(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (CMN) also has the 1:2 ordered monoclinic structure which was distorted by the anti-phase tilt or in-phsae tilt of octahedra. A unit cell containing both the in-phase tilt axis and anti-phase tilt axis was not observed in the CMN. Therefore CMN has the mixed phase consisting of the 1:2 ordered monoclinic phase with anti-phase tilt of octahedra and the one with in -phase tilt of ocatahedra,. The anti-parallel shift of cation was also observed in the CMN.

  • Pure macroporous silica matrix using a template of polystyrene (PS) was prepared by the sol-gel method. Macroporous Ag-$SiO_2$ composite materials, which were homogeneously dispersed with Ag particles in the macropores, were successfully fabricated. The pure porous silica had ordered pore sizes of 100 nm and 200 nm, which was adjusted under consideration of the template size. The macroporous Ag-$SiO_2$ composite showed the ideal ordered distribution of the pore in case of the adding of 3 wt% $AgNO_3$ under consideration of controlling of the pore size as well as microstructural observation of $AgNO_3$concentration. The macroporous Ag-$SiO_2$ composites had ordered 100 nm and 200 nm pores, and the Ag particles within the matrix showed the size of 15~20 nm.

Interaction of oxygen with the ordered Ni3Al(111) alloy surface: adsorption and oxide islands formation at 800 K and 1000 K (Ordered Ni3Al(111) 합금표면과 산소와의 상호작용 : 800 K와 1000 K에서의 흡착과 oxide islands 형성연구)

  • The interaction of oxygen with the ordered $Ni_3Al(111)$ alloy surface at 800 K and 1000 K has been investigated using LEED, STM, HREELS, UPS, and PAX. The clean $Ni_3Al(111)$ surface exhibits a "$2{\times}2$" LEED pattern corresponding to the ordered bulk-like terminated surface structure. For an adsorption of oxygen at 800 K, LEED shows an unrelated oxygen induced superstructure with a lattice spacing of $2.93\;{\AA}$ in addition to the ($1{\times}1$) substrate spots. The combined HREELS and the UPS data point to an oxygen chemisorption on threefold aluminum sites while PAX confirms an islands growth of the overlayer. Since such sites are not available on the $Ni_3Al(111)$ surface, we conclude the buildup of an oxygen covered aluminum overlayer. During oxygen exposure at 1000 K, however, we observe the growth of ${\gamma}'-Al_2O_3$ structure on the reordered $Ni_3Al(111)$ substrate surface. This structure has been identified by means of HREELS and STM. The HREELS data will show that at 800 K the oxidation shows a very characteristic behavior that cannot be described by the formation of an $Al_2O_3$ overlayer. Moreover, the STM image shows a "Strawberry" structure due to the oxide islands formation at 1000 K. Conclusively, from the oxygen interaction with $Ni_3Al(111)$ alloy surface at 800 K and 1000 K an islands growth of the aluminum oxide overlayer has been found.

Formation and Structure of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Octylthioacetates on Au(111) in Catalytic Tetrabutylammonium Cyanide Solution

  • The formation and structure of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by the adsorption of acetyl-protected octylthioacetate (OTA) on Au(111) in a catalytic tetrabutylammonium cyanide (TBACN) solution were examined by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Molecular-scale STM imaging revealed that OTA molecules on Au(111) in a pure solvent form disordered SAMs, whereas they form well-ordered SAMs showing a c(4 × 2) structure in a catalytic TBACN solution. XPS and CV measurements also revealed that OTA SAMs on Au(111) formed in a TBACN solution have a stronger chemisorbed peak in the S 2p region at 162 eV and a higher blocking effect compared to OTA SAMs formed in a pure solvent. In this study, we clearly demonstrate that TBACN can be used as an effective deprotecting reagent for obtaining well-ordered SAMs of thioacetyl-protected molecules on gold.

A Study on the Ordering of Na Ions in $Na_xWO_3(0.5{\leq}x{\leq}1.0)$

  • Cry structures of $Na_xWO_3$ (0.5$\leq$x$\leq$1.0) were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies indicate that there is an ordering of sodium ions when x=0.75. The direction of ordering is [110] and the wavelength of ordering is twice of the interplanar distance of (110) plane. It has been confirmed that a superlattice containing eight $Na_{0.75}WO_3$ is the unit cell of ordered structure. In this unit cell, Na sites at (000) and ($\frac{2}{1}\frac{2}{1}\frac{2}{1}$) are vacant. The ordered phase was preserved after the annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ in the air. In reduced $Na_xWO_3$ with x=0.5 and 1.0, extra phases were found with the partially ordered perovskite phase. After annealing at $600^{\circ}C$, theses phases transformed to the phases found in calcined specimens.
