  • The experiments were conducted to study the influence of growth location and cutting microelements macro-and on managements in temperate grasses in Korea and West Germany from 1975 to 1979. The field trials were designed as split plot with three grass species of Dactylis glomerata L., Lolium perenne L. and Festuca pratensis Huds under three cutting regimes at grazing stage, silage stage and hay stage. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Concentrations of macro-and microelements in temperate grasses showed a different response to growth location and growing season. P concentration in the plants was decreased under hot stress in summer, whereas Mg and Na tended to be increased. The seasonal changes in K and Zn were not significant. 2. Morphological growth stage was to be found as an important factors influenced to mineral components. P and K contents in temperate grasses tended to be decreased as morphological development especially under high temperature in Suweon and Cheju. Ca and Mg were less affected by morphological stage and cutting managements. 3. Mean value of Ca/P ratio in the plants were 1.58, 1.33 and 1.21 for meadow fescue, perennial ryegrass and orchardgrass, respectively. Ca/P ratio in grasses tended to be increased as morphological development. 4. Zn deficiency in the plants occured in all grass species and experimental sites. Mean Zn concentration of the plant were 34.2%, 31.2% and 37.8% for Suweon, Cheju and Taekwalyong, respectivelly. Na deficiency occured in orchardgrass and meadow fescue, especially in taekwalyong. Cool temperature resulted in a decrease of Na absorption and accumulation.

  • The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of grass maturity at harvest on the nutritive value of grass silage (GS) in relation to voluntary intake, digestibility, nitrogen (N) utilization and in sacco dry matter (DM) degradability. Silage was cut from a sward dominated by orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) at the late-vegetative (early-cut), internode elongation (mediumcut) and flowering (late-cut) stages of growth. The DM yield at harvest was the lowest for early-cut silage (5.4 t/ha) and increased to 6.5 and 7.0 t/ha for the medium and late-cut silage respectively. As the crop matured, the crude protein (CP) concentration decreased significantly (p<0.05) and there was a marked increase in acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentration (p<0.001). The three different silages were offered to four 18-month old Charolais wether sheep to measure the voluntary intake, in vivo digestibility and N retention over four 21-day periods in an incomplete changeover design. Silage degradability characteristics were determined using four fistulated sheep to measure DM degradability over 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. There was a linear decrease in the voluntary intake of silage fresh matter, DM, organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestibility of DM, OM, NDF, ADF and CP, and digestibility of OM in DM (Dvalue) ($P_L<0.01$) as harvesting of grass was delayed. Nitrogen intake, N output in urine, N output in faeces and N balance also linearly decreased ($P_L<0.01$) with postponed harvesting of grass for silage. DM degradability and effective degradability (ED) significantly decreased with increasing maturity of grass at harvest. The results suggest that harvesting date has a significant influence on the nutritive value of GS in terms of intake, digestibility, N balance and in sacco degradability in the rumen. It was concluded that early harvest GS ensured higher intake, digestibility, N intake and DM degradability in comparison with the medium and the late cut GS as a result of improved rumen N efficiency and utilization probably due to a better balance of available energy and protein.

  • In this study in order to know the behavior of mineral nutrients from forage plant to soil in a grassland ecosystem, the leaching of minerals (K, Mg, Ca, N and P) from air-dried (dead) plant body was investigated by putting orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) hay on meadow during a month with seasonal changes. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The K content of the forage, not stable during the experimental seasons, tended to decrease in the summer of 1986, while the Mg and Ca contents increased in the summer. The reason might be a different response (solubility or leaching liability) of the monovalent mineral (K) and divalent ones (Mg and Ca) in the forage to rainfall. 2) The percentage of P to the initial amount in the forage showed larger decrease in a rainy period (Feb.~Mar., 1986) and during the rainy summer (May to July). The P component of the forage might be easily leached with water. 3) The percentage of the four minerals (Ca, N, Mg, K) remained the least in the period of (Jun.~Jul., 1986), 4) Though the percentage of remained Mg and N of the forage varied very similarly, the percentage of remained N was higher than that of Mg during periods before summer (January to May), while after the period the ratio of the Mg seemed to be higher than that of the N (June to December), 5) During the periods until (May~Jun., 1986) the percentage of remained K and P of the forage varied in very similar pattern, and the order of remained mineral was as follows; $Ca>N{\geq}Mg>P=K$. But from the period of (Jun-Jul) the ratio of P remained in the forage increased nearly up to the ratio of N, and the order was as follows; $Ca>Mg{\geq}N{\geq}P>K$.

  • Red sorrel (Rumex acetosella L.) is a troublesome perennial weed in the alpine grasslands of Kangwon Province of Korea. A number of soil- and foliar-applied herbicides were evaluated for their efficacy of red sorrel control. In greenhouse experiments, no soil-applied herbicides, such as pendimethalin, simazine, alachlor, metolachlor, ethalfluralin controlled red sorrel, however, foliar-applied herbicides, such as glufosinate, paraquat, glyphosate, glyphosate + 2,4-D, dicamba, mecoprop, 2,4-D, bentazone controlled more than 60% of red sorrel 2 weeks after treatments. When dicamba and 2,4-D were applied to red sorrel in different growth stages, the auxin-type of herbicides cold control red sorrel regardless of growth stage. This result implies that the auxin-type herbicides can be applied between early May (early growth stage) and mid lune (before fruit maturation) at Kangwon alpine grasslands. In a field experiment, glufosinate at 1.0 kg a.i, $ha^{-1}$, glyphosate at 3.28 kg a.i. $ha^{-1}$, dicamba at 0.96 kg a.i. $ha^{-1}$, and mecoprop at 150 kg a.i. $ha^{-1}$ controlled more than 80% of red sorrel 4 weeks for treatment, suggesting such herbicides could be applied for red sorrel control at Kangwon alpine grasslands.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the competition in mono-and binary-associations of four forage species; ochardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L. cv. Potomac), tallfescue (Festuca arundinacea Scnreb, cv. Fawn), white clover (Trifolium repns L. cv. California), and red clover (Trifolium pratense L. cv. Kenland) as affected by different sowing rate. Each species was grown in interspecific stands in field. And samplings of shoot were taken at first cliping stages. The interspecific competition was evaluated by calculating traditional methods: aggressivity, relative yield total (RYT), relative crowding coefficient (RCC), and compensation index (CI) with shoot dry matter production and calories of nutrient ingredient of each species in mono-and binary-mixture. Compared mixture with monoculture. RYT based on dry weight was lucrative in mixture except for orchardgrass-redcover (1:0.1,1:1). RYT of calculated calories with produced nutrients was in inlucrative in mixture of orchardgrass-redclover's 1:0.1 mixture by RYT<1.0. Generally, RYT was the highest in mixture of 1:0.5 sowing rate. Aggressivity of grass was poor competition tendency that raised up legume's sowing rate, particularly, with whiteclover. In grasses, tallfescue was stronger competitor than orchardgrass with legume in mixture, RCC of grasses against legume's growth was depressed in higher sowing rate with legume. Grass's growth depression was severer with whiteclover than redclover in mixture.
