In this paper, scripts for estimating the reference orbits of navigation satellites were developed and their performance was analyzed as a preliminary study for the development of the Korean GPS precise orbit determination technology. The JPL Flinn AC's data processing strategy was applied and Linux-based scripts were developed using GIPSY-OASIS. For the analysis of the accuracy of the estimated reference orbit, the precise orbit provided by the international GNSS data center was used as the truth. As a result, estimated satellite coordinates showed almost exactly same patterns and trends with the reference precise orbits, and their differences are in the range of ±2 cm. The average error between the two orbits was less than 1 cm in the 3D direction, while the standard deviation was also at 1 cm. From these, we found that the developed scripts have excellent performance in precise orbit determination.
This study presents the application of satellite laser ranging (SLR) to orbit determination (OD) of high-Earth-orbit (HEO) satellites. Two HEO satellites are considered: the Quasi-Zenith Satellite-1 (QZS-1), a Japanese elliptical-inclinedgeosynchronous-orbit (EIGSO) satellite, and the Compass-G1, a Chinese geostationary-orbit (GEO) satellite. One week of normal point (NP) data were collected for each satellite to perform the OD based on the batch least-square process. Five SLR tracking stations successfully obtained 374 NPs for QZS-1 in eight days, whereas only two ground tracking stations could track Compass-G1, yielding 68 NPs in ten days. Two types of station bias estimation and a station data weighting strategy were utilized for the OD of QZS-1. The post-fit root-mean-square (RMS) residuals of the two week-long arcs were 11.98 cm and 10.77 cm when estimating the biases once in an arc (MBIAS). These residuals were decreased significantly to 2.40 cm and 3.60 cm by estimating the biases every pass (PBIAS). Then, the resultant OD precision was evaluated by the orbit overlap method, yielding three-dimensional errors of 55.013 m with MBIAS and 1.962 m with PBIAS for the overlap period of six days. For the OD of Compass-G1, no station weighting strategy was applied, and only MBIAS was utilized due to the lack of NPs. The post-fit RMS residuals of OD were 8.81 cm and 12.00 cm with 49 NPs and 47 NPs, respectively, and the corresponding threedimensional orbit overlap error for four days was 160.564 m. These results indicate that the amount of SLR tracking data is critical for obtaining precise OD of HEO satellites using SLR because additional parameters, such as station bias, are available for estimation with sufficient tracking data. Furthermore, the stand-alone SLR-based orbit solution is consistently attainable for HEO satellites if a target satellite is continuously trackable for a specific period.
In this paper, a brief but essential development strategy for the lunar orbit determination system is discussed to prepare for the future Korea's lunar missions. Prior to the discussion of this preliminary development strategy, technical models of foreign agencies for the lunar orbit determination system, tracking networks to measure the orbit, and collaborative efforts to verify system performance are reviewed in detail with a short summary of their lunar mission history. Covered foreign agencies are European Space Agency, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Indian Space Research Organization and China National Space Administration. Based on the lessons from their experiences, the preliminary development strategy for Korea's future lunar orbit determination system is discussed with regard to the core technical issues of dynamic modeling, numerical integration, measurement modeling, estimation method, measurement system as well as appropriate data formatting for the interoperability among foreign agencies. Although only the preliminary development strategy has been discussed through this work, the proposed strategy will aid the Korean astronautical society while on the development phase of the future Korea's own lunar orbit determination system. Also, it is expected that further detailed system requirements or technical development strategies could be designed or established based on the current discussions.

In this study, we present the results of orbit determination (OD) using satellite laser ranging (SLR) data for the Science and Technology Satellite (STSAT)-2C by a short-arc analysis. For SLR data processing, the NASA/GSFC GEODYN II software with one year (2013/04 - 2014/04) of normal point observations is used. As there is only an extremely small quantity of SLR observations of STSAT-2C and they are sparsely distribution, the selection of the arc length and the estimation intervals for the atmospheric drag coefficients and the empirical acceleration parameters was made on an arc-to-arc basis. For orbit quality assessment, the post-fit residuals of each short-arc and orbit overlaps of arcs are investigated. The OD results show that the weighted root mean square post-fit residuals of short-arcs are less than 1 cm, and the average 1-day orbit overlaps are superior to 50/600/900 m for the radial/cross-track/along-track components. These results demonstrate that OD for STSAT-2C was successfully achieved with cm-level range precision. However its orbit quality did not reach the same level due to the availability of few and sparse measurement conditions. From a mission analysis viewpoint, obtaining the results of OD for STSAT-2C is significant for generating enhanced orbit predictions for more frequent tracking.
Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) is the first satellite in Korea that provides 1 m resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Precise orbit determination (POD) using a dual-frequency IGOR receiver data is performed to conduct high-resolution SAR images. We suggest orbit determination strategies based on a differential GPS technique. Double-differenced phase observations are sampled every 30 seconds. A dynamic model approach using an estimation of general empirical acceleration every 6 minutes through a batch least-squares estimator is applied. The orbit accuracy is validated using real data from GRACE and KOMPSAT-2 as well as simulated KOMPSAT-5 data. The POD results using GRACE satellite are adjusted through satellite laser ranging data and compared with publicly available reference orbit data. Operational orbit determination satisfies 5 m root sum square (RSS) in one sigma, and POD meets the orbit accuracy requirements of less than 20 cm and 0.003 cm/s RSS in position and velocity, respectively.
Orbit determination problems have been interest of many researchers for long time. Due to the high nonlinearity of the equation of motion and the measurement model, it is necessary to linearize the both equations. To avoid linearization, the filter based on Fokker-Planck equation is designed. with the extended Kalman filter update mechanism, in which the associated Fokker-Planck equation was solved efficiently and accurately via discrete quadrature and the measurement update was done through the extended Kalman filter update mechanism. This filter based on the DQMOM and the EKF update is applied to the orbit determination problem with appropriate modification to mitigate the filter smugness. Unlike the extended Kalman filter, the hybrid filter based on the DQMOM and the EKF update does not require the burdensome evaluation of the Jacobian matrix and Gaussian assumption for the system, and can still provide more accurate estimations of the state than those of the extended Kalman filter especially when measurements are sparse. Simulation results indicate that the advantages of the hybrid filter based on the DQMOM and the EKF update make it a promising alternative to the extended Kalman filter for orbit estimation problems.

In this paper, an approach is developed for relative state estimation of satellite formation flying. To estimate relative states of two satellites, the Extended Kalman Filter Algorithm is adopted with the relative distance and speed between two satellites and attitude of satellite for measurements. Numerical simulations are conducted under two circumstances. The first one presents both chief and deputy satellites are orbiting a circular reference orbit around a perfectly spherical Earth model with no disturbing acceleration, in which the elementary relative orbital motion is taken into account. In reality, however, the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but rather an oblate spheroid, and both satellites are under the effect of $J_2$ geopotential disturbance, which causes the relative distance between two satellites to be on the gradual increase. A near-Earth orbit decays as a result of atmospheric drag. In order to remove the modeling error, the second scenario incorporates the effect of the $J_2$ geopotential force, and the atmospheric drag, and the eccentricity in satellite orbit are also considered.
To maintain the stability during the operation of railway vehicle, the perfect installation of rail, namely the orbit as well as the performance of the railway vehicle itself is required. The orbit of railway needs the intensity and elasticity that stands the shock and vibration due to the weight of the railway vehicle enough, Also, the driving safety during the operation of vehicle should be guaranteed, comfortable feeling of the passenger should be maintained, and the influence of the noise and vibration to the environs should be minimized. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program that calculates the change of construction cost according to the selection of railway orbit. This study introduces the orbit design automation program according to the selection of railway orbit, and discuss the principle and the way to use of the program.

In this paper, we investigate the accuracy of various sensor models developed for linear pushbroom satellite images. We define the accuracy of a sensor model in two aspects: the accuracy of bundle adjustments and the accuracy of estimating exterior orientation parameters. The first accuracy has been analyzed and reported frequently whereas the second accuracy has somewhat been neglected. We argue that the second accuracy is as important as the first one. The second accuracy describes a model's ability to predict satellite orbit and attitude, which has many direct and indirect applications. Analysis was carried out on the traditional collinearity-based sensor models and orbit-based sensor models. Collinearity-based models were originally developed for aerial photos and modified for linear pushbroom-type satellite images. Orbit-based models have been used within satellite communities for satellite control and orbit determination. Models were tested with two Kompsat-1 EOC scenes and GPS-driven control points. Test results showed that orbit-based models produced better estimation of exterior orientation parameters while maintained comparable accuracy on bundle adjustments.

In an optical observing system, three pairs of observations at equal time intervals are required for the orbit determination method to obtain orbital information of an unknown space objects. In this paper, we propose a method of estimating a streak for acquiring three pairs of observations using one streak image information. Satellite trajectory simulation data were generated for nine cases using the STK program in order to verify the characteristics of the orbit of space object and estimation performance. Simulation was performed by applying three approaches that can estimate the next streak position after a few seconds from one streak image information, and the estimation performance was evaluated. Linear vector method and Kalman Filter method based on the linear assumption tend to increase the estimation error in the region where the nonlinearity is large. However estimation method using the polynomial curve fitting based on the least square method showed smaller and uniform error result than the previous methods.
