Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyze the differences in factors related to the incidence of dental caries between children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas and compared the DMFT and DMFS scores to confirm the effect of water fluoridation program (WFP) in Geoje and Changwon. Methods: The oral health examination and questionnaire survey were conducted in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. The number of surveyed children aged 8, 10, and 12 years in the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area of two cities was 1,524 and 1,383, respectively. Self-recorded questionnaires included self-perception of their own dental health, daily toothbrushing frequency, intake frequency of cariogenic sweet snacks and beverages, experience of gingival bleeding, experience of unmet dental treatment, and use of oral hygiene device except for toothbrush and toothpaste. The prevalence of caries and fissure-sealant status were surveyed. The logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the difference in children's self-rated oral health status between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated area. The mean number of sealed teeth and surfaces, marginal means of the DMFT and DMFS scores adjusted for the difference in the samples' sex distribution, and region were compared between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Results: In the fluoridated area, the experience rate of unmet dental treatments was higher among children aged 10 years, intake frequency of cariogenic sweet snacks and beverages were higher among the whole sample, and experience rate of professional fluoride application were lower than in the non-fluoridated area. The DMFT score for permanent dentition adjusted for differences in sex, region, and mean number of fissure-sealed teeth in the fluoridated area was significantly lower among whole samples and 8-, 10-, and 12-year-olds alone than in the non-fluoridated area. Conclusions: WFP can alleviate oral health inequality because it is effective in reducing the incidence of caries among children is disadvantaged demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to compare a nutritionally balanced soft blend diet (SBD) with a soft fluid diet (SFD) on the health of inpatients who have undergone oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, ultimately aiming to enhance care outcomes, improve health-related quality of life (QOL), and increase satisfaction with the hospital. Methods: Thirty-two patients were randomized into two groups: sixteen received SFD and sixteen received SBD. Anthropometric, laboratory evaluations were conducted upon admission and discharge. Patients filled out questionnaires on demographics, diet satisfaction, food intake amount, and health-related QOL on the day of discharge, assessed using the EuroQoL 5 Dimensions 3 Level and EuroQoL Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) instruments. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, χ2 tests for group differences, and paired nonparametric t-tests for within-group comparisons. The Mann-Whitney U test evaluated inter-group differences in preoperative weight and body mass index (BMI), postoperative changes, meal satisfaction, intake, health-related QOL, and self-assessed health status. P-values were set at a significance level of 0.05. Results: The SBD group had higher dietary intake (63.2% vs. 51.0%) and greater diet satisfaction (80.6 vs. 48.1, P < 0.0001) compared to SFD group. Health-related QOL, measured by EQ-VAS, was better in SBD group (70.3 vs. 58.8, P < 0.05). Postoperative weight and BMI decreased in SFD group but increased in SBD group (P < 0.01). Changes in laboratory results showed more stability in the SBD group. No postoperative infections were reported in SBD group, whereas SFD group had a 31.25% complication rate. Conclusions: While SFD is often recommended after OMF surgery to protect oral wound healing process, our study reveals that SBD not only enhances physical and psychological outcomes but also, somewhat unexpectedly, supports wound healing and reduces complications. Essentially, SBD promotes physical recovery and enhances health-related QOL than SFD by supporting both somatic and mental healing aspects.
The purpose of this study was to determine halitosis perception status of firefighters and identify the factors related to halitosis; for this purpose, a survey was conducted in 241 firefighters in Daejeon, obtaining the following results: First. The higher level of smoking and alcohol intake, the more likely to perceive halitosis; all of those with a general disease perceived halitosis; and the more stress, the more likely to perceive halitosis. Second, The respondents who brushed their teeth three times a day, who spent 1~2 minutes in brushing their teeth, who failed to wash their tongue, and who had never received oral health education were most likely to perceive halitosis. And third. such factors as age, the amount of tongue coating, and dry mouth affected halitosis perception status. Firefighters' halitosis perception is related to several factors. For this reason, emphasis is placed on the need to develop a program for helping firefighters prevent halitosis and remove oral symptoms and to give education for good oral health management.

It has been suggested that people who suffer from impaired masticatory function may adapt food consistency to their oral status (which may lead to deficient nutrient intake) or rely on the digestive system to compensate for the lack of oral preparation of food (which may increase the likelihood of digestive diseases and decrease gut absorption). Masticatory deficiency thus may be detrimental to health. This article reviews evidence of the effects of masticatory deficiency on nutrition. The selection of relevant literature was based on Medline queries using the following key words: mastication, nutrition, digestion, diet, and disease risk. Earlier work not listed in Medline but related to the subject also was reviewed. Only publications available in English were selected for inclusion. It is difficult to draw conclusions from many of the reviewed studies due to issues related to study design, confounding variables, and the subjective nature of the measurements. In particular, data supporting a link between masticatory function and deficient dietary intake often are based on relatively weak correlations and cannot confer a causal relationship.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to attempt to lay the foundation for the development of oral health programs geared toward promoting the oral health of low socioeconomic class children. Methods : The subjects of this study have been investigated for the use of children to 96 local children's center. Questionnaire for research purposes are described in more detail under the coordination of child care teachers to students, students to be able to record. The survey was conducted at the Health center. Analyzed the data collected by SPSS 18.0. Results : The findings of the study were as follows: The children were influenced by habits of having a snack in dental caries experience. Higher intake of bread and a lot of children more probability of dental caries experience. I've found a lot of sweet-food intake eleven cakes or fruits and vegetables that children prefer higher dental caries experience was low. Conclusions : Education on dietary behavior for low-income children was necessary because of the high correlation of the relationship between dietary habits and dental caries and diet.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting periodontal disease-related symptoms in adolescents using raw data from the 16th (2020) online survey on adolescent health. Methods: Data were collected from the survey entries, and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0. A multi-sample chi-square test was performed to determine periodontal disease-related symptoms according to demographic characteristics, lifestyles, exercise habits, and psychological factors. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors affecting periodontal disease-related symptoms. Results: Periodontal disease-related symptoms were higher in female, high school-age adolescents, and those with lower economic status. Increased alcohol intake, having breakfast 3 days or less a week, ingesting sweet drinks and fast food three or more times a week, and zero water intake were found to have a greater effect on periodontal disease-related symptoms. Higher levels of stress, fewer hours of sleep, and feeling less healthy were also factors leading to increased periodontal disease-related symptoms. Conclusions: Adolescents have various factors that are associated with periodontal disease. A method to reduce rates of periodontal disease in adolescents should be developed, along with a school oral health education program.
The purpose of this study was to enhance soldiers' oral health level and to offer basic data on controlling and preventing halitosis. It surveyed halitosis-related elements and analyzed relationship between subjective self-perception level of halitosis according to it targeting 253 soldiers in their 20s in some areas of Seoul from September 2012 to October. Thus, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. As for subjects' self-perception of halitosis, the perception status of oral health was indicated to be 'very bad' and to be shown most highly in one place. It was indicated to be high in the group of feeling Xerostomia much and the group of often feeling the white membrane of tongue. The statistically significant difference was shown(p<0.01). 2. Subjects' self-perception of halitosis was indicated to be the highest in the group with the largest intake of snacks. It was shown to be the highest in the group of having sinus infection and rhinitis. It was indicated to be the highest in the group of having a habit of oral respiration. Significant difference was shown(p<0.05). 3. Subjects' self-perception of halitosis was indicated to be lower in the group, which ever received oral health education, than the group in opposite case. Significant difference was shown(p<0.05).
Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between chewing ability and health status in order to provide basic information for the development of program which may lead to an improvement of a the elderly health status in urban areas. Materials and methods: The subjects of this study were 128 elderly urban female over the age of 65 who reside at house. The data were collected from May 21 to August 20, 2001, through questionnaires about nutrient intake status, direct measurement of anthropometrics, and oral examinations. Results: In terms of remaining teeth, there was significant negative relationship between age and number of remained teeth. The average number of remained teeth our subjects was $13.1{\pm}10.6$. About sixty five percent of the subjects were denture users (partial or full dentures) and there was positive relationship between age and the percentage of denture user. There was a significant negative correlation between age and chewing ability. The group that was able to chew had more remained teeth than the other group. Conclusion: This study suggests that there is strong positive relationship between chewing ability (remaining teeth) and elderly health status in urban areas, and the importance of preserving original teeth to improve the elderly health status in the public health program.
This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional status and diabetes management of diabetic patients in the Health Center. General characteristics, food habits, food intakes and the knowledge about diet therapy were investigated from ninety one diabetes subjects. Anthropometric assessment such as weight, hight, triceps skinfold thickness, and biochemical measurement of fasting blood glucose(FBG), post prandial 2 hours blood glucose(PP2), and hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) were obtained form the subjects. The results were summarized as following : 1. The average of age was 60.9 years old and 83.5% of subjects was illiterate and primary school graduated. 2. Relative Body Weight(RBW) and % body muscle were 96.18${\pm}$13.6 and 33.56${\pm}$7.01%, respectively. Obese subjects whose body weight exceeded 120% of the ideal values were 3.3%. 3. The 86.8% of subjects were managed by oral hyperglycemic agents. 4. The mean of FBG, PP2, HbA1c were 140.75${\pm}$44.43mg/㎗, 7.60${\pm}$1.88%, respectively. 5. The mean daily intake of calorie was 1407㎉, and 73.6% of subjects lower caloric intake than prescribed calorie. when the degree of dietary compliance was expressed as Tunbridge score, 18.7% of total subjects was grouped as satisfactory, where as 20.9% and 60.4% could be considered as tolerable and hopeless, respectively. The nutrients intake were lower than RDA except for Vitamin A and Vitamin C and the ratio of carbohydrate : protein : fat was 72 : 14 : 14. 6. The mean score of knowledge test about diet therapy was 3.52${\pm}$2.19 out of possible 14.00 points. The above results suggested that the most of diabetic patient showed the poor nutritional status and they faced the lack of knowledge about diabetes management.
Objectives : The study investigated and analyzed the relationship between health-related lifestyle and psychosomatic self-reported symptom in dental hygiene students. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 478 dental hygiene students in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do from March 7 to June 21, 2012 by random sampling method after informed consent. Results : The health-related lifestyle showed the results as follows. Nonsmokers accounted for 89.1%. Those who never exercise accounted for 67.9% and 37.9% of the students sleep for 5-6 hours. Those who take alcohols twice per month accounted for 58.2%. The correlation between the symptoms and lifestyle included multiple subjective symptoms(I), respiratory(A), eyes and skin(B) and digestive organs(C) symptoms and smoking status(p<.01), mouth and anal(D), depression(K), nervousness(E). There existed the correlation in average sleeping time(p<.01) and impulsivess(H) and smoking status(p<.05) and lie scale(L) and regular exercise(p<.05) and aggressiveness(F) and drinking habits and irregular and life(G) and breakfast habits. The smoking habit, sleeping time, and snack intake had an influence on psychosomatic self-reported oral health-related symptoms. Conclusions : Cessation of smoking, adequate sleeping time, and reduction of snack intake can improve the oral health-related lifestyle and reduce the self-reported symptoms in the dental hygiene students.
