This study compared the effects of programs according to management type by preparing a manual for oral muscle exercises that integrates oral movement and oral massage. The program was performed on 14 elderly patients in a seniors' college self-practice program group and 28 elderly patients in a social welfare center expert intervention group. In the self-practice group, an expert demonstrated oral muscle exercises and subsequently encouraged self-practice by selecting an oral muscle exercise leader. In the expert intervention group, an expert demonstrated oral exercises on a one-on-one basis and subsequently gave oral muscle massages. In the self-practice group, there was no difference in saliva secretion (p=0.213) or oral dryness (p=0.206), after the intervention, the expert intervention group showed improvements in saliva secretion (p=0.009) and oral dryness (p=0.007). There was no difference in program satisfaction between groups (p=0.143), and both groups reported high satisfaction. As seniors may have difficulty in maintaining oral health behaviors, a certain amount of expert intervention may be needed. The results suggest that both a self-practice oral exercise program and an expert intervention program can be effective elderly patients.
PURPOSE. Prevention of xerostomia and stress is important to prolong healthy life expectancy and improve the quality of life. We aimed to investigate the effects of tongue rotation exercise for increasing salivary secretions and stabilizing salivary stress hormone levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty four participants without subjective oral dryness were enrolled. The exercises comprised tongue rotation exercise and empty chewing. The salivary stress hormone level was measured using a Salivary Amylase Monitor. Unstimulated whole saliva volume and salivary amylase activity were measured before tongue rotation exercise or empty chewing and subsequently 5, 10, and 15 minutes after these exercises. Differences in the rates of change of unstimulated whole saliva volume and salivary amylase activity were analyzed by repeated measure analysis of variance. RESULTS. Statistically significant differences among the rates of change were not observed after empty chewing for unstimulated whole saliva volume and salivary amylase activity at the four measurement times. However, the rate of change of unstimulated whole saliva volume and salivary amylase activity were statistically significantly different among the four time points: before the tongue rotation exercise and 5, 10, and 15 minutes post-exercise (P<.05 and P<.01, respectively). CONCLUSION. Tongue rotation is effective in increasing saliva secretion, reducing stress, improving oral function, and extending healthy life expectancy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a mouth excercise program on the promotion of oral function of old people. Forty seven old persons who conducted a mouth excercise exercise two times every week for 12 weeks in the experimental group were compared with the control group of 39 old persons using physical examinations. The results were as follows; In virtue of this exercise the salivary flow was increased 0.029 ml in the experimental group more than 0.046 ml in the control group. Maximum mouth opening in the experimental group was 4.12 cm and higher than 3.92 cm in the control. Also Oral diadochokinesis was 1.69 times per second in experimental group and more than 1.65 in the control group. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the mouth excercise had good effects on promoting oral health. Some movements of the mouth excercise exercise need be modified, and then the exercise should be publicized as one of the ways to improve wholistic health of the aged.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of Oral Function Improvement Exercises on salivation, xerostomia and halitosis in elderly people. Methods: The participants in the study were 48 female community-dwelling elders in D city. The Oral Function Improvement Exercises were given 3 times a week, for a total of 24 times from August to October 2011. Spitting method, Visual Analogue Scale, and halimeter (mBA-21) were used to evaluate the effects of Oral Function Improvement Exercises on salivation, xerostomia, and halitosis. The data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$-test and t-test with the SPSS program. Results: The experimental group had significantly better salivation, and less xerostomia and halitosis than the control group. Conclusion: The results indicate that Oral Function Improvement Exercises were effective for salivation, xerostomia and halitosis in the elders. Therefore, it was suggested that Oral Function Improvement Exercise are applicable in a community nursing intervention program to improve the quality of life for elders.
Tuberculosis has re-emerged as serious infectious diseases, and oral tuberculosis, though uncommon, can be seen in both the primary and secondary tuberculosis. The aim of the present review is to describe the pathogenesis of tuberculosis and the characteristics of oral tuberculosis. The oral tuberculosis lesion may present as a diagnostic challenge for the clinician. In particular, the risk of tuberculosis transmission in dental practises is potentially increasing, the dentists and dental providers must exercise strict tuberculosis prevention.
The authors reviewed the etiology and essential treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The principal etiology was thought to the the myospasm of masticatory musculatures by stress (major cause) and dental irritation. Therefore, we attempted to control the myospasm by stress management, isometric exercise and regular daily physical exercises (walking, Jogging, bycycling, rope skipping, swimming & gymnastic exercise). The result was more favorable (95% success rate) without recurrence in 123 patients, who was referred to our department of dentistry(Oral & Maxillofacial surgery), Wonju Christian Hospital.
This study was designed to investigate the expression and production of interleukin-1beta $(IL-1{\beta})$ in human peripheral blood of trained runners and untrained controls after temporary moderate intensity exercise. Male long-distance trained runners (TR) and untrained sedentary control subjects (SED) ran for 1 h at 70% of heart rate reserve (HRR). $IL-1{\beta}$ gene and protein expressions were significantly higher in TR than those with SED at all 3 intervals examined independently. Significant increases in total sweat volume and oral temperature were observed after exercise in both groups, however, there were some differences between the groups. We conclude, therefore, that sweating due to exercise is associated with increase of $IL-1{\beta}$ and it is correlated with decrease of oral temperature.
Objective: All patients who have the disc displacement with reduction (DDwR) are always not progressive but some of them with significant catching or locking progress to disc displacement without reduction (DDw/oR). In this study, we suggest opening exercise therapy using Locking-free Appliance (LA) to be helpful to prevent progressive derangement. Methods: Retrospectively, a total 37 patients who received exercise treatment using LA was analyzed from January 2010 to December 2011. Patients had been instructed in proper exercise technique to practise for opening and closing of mouth wearing the appliance 30 times a day in locking-free position. Results: None of the patients took a turn for worse to DDw/oR (37 patients). The 16 patients (43.2%, locking-free group) of them could open their mouth without intermittent condylar locking. Measurement of data was analyzed using and Mann-Whitney test. There was no statistically significant difference for age, gender, presence of palpational pain, locking period, VAS quantitative pain score between locking-free group and locking group. Conclusions: In this study, some patients could open their mouth without intermittent locking and did not take a turn for worse to DDw/oR after opening exercise therapy with LA. Furthermore, LA had advantages which were short wearing time, low costs and minimizing patients' uncomfortable compared to conventional treatment method. This therapy can be more appropriate new treatment to prevent progress to DDw/oR.
This is to report functional treatment, as mechano-therapy, of condylar fracture in cases of growing patients. Benoist's appliance was used in 3 cases condylar fractures, provides extraoral elastic forces to external pterygoid muscle. The appliance providing guided exercise of masticatory muscles induces transformative growth of trauma-tic condyles. The results were as follow; 1. Early exercise preventes ankylosis of fractured condyle. 2. Optimal physical exercise therapy induces the normal growth pattern by muscular training and bony remodeling of fractured condyle in children.
