Objectives: The purpose of this study was to aid in the prediction of tumor cell tolerance to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Material and Methods: Human epidermoid carcinoma A-431 cell lines were irradiated by 2, 4, 6, 8, 10Gy at a dose rate of 210cGy/min using /sup 60/Co Irradiator ALDORADO 8 and then were exposed to bleomycin or cisplatin at concentration of 2㎍/㎖ for 1 hour. The viable cells were determined for each radiation dose and/or each drug at the 4th day and cell surviving curves were obtained using semiautomated MTT assay. Results: The surviving fraction after irradiation of 2Gy was 0.99, and there was not significant difference of surviving fraction in comparison with the control group on A-431 cell line(P>0.05). But there were significant differences of surviving fractions at doses of 4, 6, 8, 10Gy in comparison with the control group(P<0.05). The cytotoxicity of bleomycin or cisplatin was significantly different in comparison with the control group on A-43l cell line (P<0.05). And the cytotoxicity of cisplatin was greater than that of bleomycin on A-431 cell line (P<0.05). There were significant differences of surviving fractions after irradiation of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10Gy with bleomycin or cisplatin in comparison with each group of irradiation only on A-431 cellline(P<0.05). There were significant differences of surviving fractions between the groups of irradiation with bleomycin and cisplatin at doses of 2, 4Gy(P<0.05), but there were not significant differences of surviving fractions at doses of 6, 8, 10Gy on A-431 cell line (P>0.05).

Primary intraosseous carcinoma(PIOC) is defined as a squamous cell carcinoma arising within the jaw, having no initial connection with the oral mucosa. The squamous cell carcinoma within the bone can be presumably developed from residues of the odontogenic epithelium, therefore, it is seen in the jaw only. Metastatic carcinoma from another primary site should be excluded in the diagnosis of Primary Intraosseous Carcinoma. This is a case of 62-year-old man, who initially diagnosed as odontogenic cyst on maxilla, but its pathologic examination was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma with odontogenic cyst. We treated this patient with partial maxillectomy, modified radical neck dissection(mRND), and postoperative radiation therapy.

Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC), a rare tumor in the head and neck region, displays comparable properties with other tumors clinically and pathologically. In consequence, an incorrect diagnosis may be established. A 51-year-old male patient who was admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Pusan National University Dental Hospital was initially diagnosed with ameloblastoma via incisional biopsy. However, the excised mass of the patient was observed to manifest histopathological characteristics of ameloblastic carcinoma. The lesion was ultimately diagnosed as clear cell odontogenic carcinoma by the Department of Oral Pathology of Pusan National Dental University. Therefore, segmental mandibulectomy and bilateral neck dissection were performed, followed by reconstruction with fibula free flap and reconstruction plate. Concomitant chemotherapy radiotherapy was not necessary. The patient has been followed up, and no recurrence has occurred 6 months after surgery.

Basal cell nevus syndrome is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable expressivity. This syndrome comprises a number of abnormalities such as multiple nevoid basal cell carcinomas of the skin, skeletal abnormalities as bifid rib and fusion of vertebrae, central nervous system abnormalities as mental retardation, eye abnormalities, and multiple odontogenic kerato cysts. In 1960, Gorlin and Goltz first described the features of this disease as constituting a true syndrome; since then, it has been realized that it is much more complex and encompassing than initially thought. This patient has many symtoms of basal cell nevus syndrome. - we has known multiple jaw cysts through panorama and facial computed tomography. He has hyperchromatism on basal cell through skin biopsy. In ophthalmologic consult, he has blindness on right. On his past medical history, amputation was done on his toes for polyductalism. - So we report with literature reviews

Background: Periodontitis is generally a chronic disorder characterized by the breakdown of tooth-supporting tissues. P. gingivalis, a Gram-negative anaerobic rod, is one of the major pathogens associated with periodontitis. Frequently, P. gingivalis infection leads to cell death. However, the correlation between P. gingivalis-induced cell death and periodontal inflammation remains to be elucidated. Among cell deaths, the death of immune cells appears to play a significant role in inflammatory response. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine P. gingivalis-induced cell death, focusing on autophagy and apoptosis in THP-1 cells. Methods: Human acute monocytic leukemia cell line (THP-1) was used for all experiments. Autophagy induced by P. gingivalis in THP-1 cells was examined by Cyto ID staining. Intracellular autophagic vacuoles were observed by fluorescence microscopy using staining Acridine orange (AO); and 3-methyladenine (3-MA) was used to inhibit autophagy. Total cell death was measured by LDH assay. Cytokine production was measured by an ELISA method. Results: P. gingivalis induced autophagy in an MOI-dependent manner in THP-1 cells, but 3-MA treatment decreased autophagy and increased the apoptotic blebs. P. gingivalis infection did not increase apoptosis compared to the control cells, whereas inhibition of autophagy by 3-MA significantly increased apoptosis in P. gingivalis-infected THP-1 cells. Inhibition of autophagy by 3-MA also increased total cell deaths and inflammatory cytokine production, including $IL-1{\beta}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$. Conclusion: P. gingivalis induced autophagy in THP-1 cells, but the inhibition of autophagy by 3-MA stimulated apoptosis, leading to increased cell deaths and pro-inflammatory cytokines production. Hence, the modulation of cell deaths may provide a mechanism to fight against invading microorganisms in host cells and could be a promising way to control inflammation.
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which accounts for approximately 90% of oral cancers, has a high rate of local recurrence and a poor prognosis despite improvements in treatment. Exosomes released from OSCC cells promote cell proliferation and metastasis. Although it is clear that the biogenesis of exosomes is mediated by the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) machinery, the gene expression pattern of ESCRT, depending on the cell type, remains elusive. The exosomal release from the human OSCC cell lines, HSC-3 and HSC-4, and their corresponding gefitinib-resistant sub-cell lines, HSC-3/GR and HSC-4/GR, was assessed by western blot and flow cytometry. The levels of ESCRT machinery proteins, including Hrs, Tsg101, and Alix, and whole-cell ubiquitination were evaluated by western blot. We observed that the basal level of exosomal release was higher in HSC-3/GR and HSC-4/GR cells than in HSC-3 and HSC-4 cells, respectively. Long-term gefitinib exposure of each cell line and its corresponding gefitinib-resistant sub-cell line differentially induced the expression of the ESCRT machinery. Furthermore, whole-cell ubiquitination and autophagic flux were shown to be increased in gefitinib-treated HSC-3 and HSC-4 cells. Our data indicate that the expression patterns of the ESCRT machinery genes are differentially regulated by the characteristics of cells, such as intracellular energy metabolism. Therefore, the expression patterns of the ESCRT machinery should be considered as a key factor to improve the treatment strategy for OSCC.

${\beta}-carotene$ is present in carrots, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. It suppresses many types of cancers by regulating cellular proliferation and apoptosis through a variety of mechanisms. However, the effects of ${\beta}-carotene$ on oral cancer cells have not been clearly established. The main goal of this study was to investigate the effects of ${\beta}-carotene$ on cell growth and apoptosis in oral cancer cells. Our results demonstrate that treatment with ${\beta}-carotene$ induced inhibition of cell growth, and that the effect was dependent on ${\beta}-carotene$ treatment time and concentration in KB cells. Furthermore, treatment with ${\beta}-carotene$ induced nuclear condensation and fragmentation in KB cells. ${\beta}-carotene$ promoted proteolytic cleavage of procaspase-3, -7, -8 and -9 with associated increases in the concentration of cleaved caspase-3, -7, -8 and -9. In addition, the level of cleaved PARP was increased by ${\beta}-carotene$ treatment in KB cells. These results suggest that ${\beta}-carotene$ can suppress cell growth and induce apoptosis in KB human oral cancer cells, and that it may have potential usefulness in anti-cancer drug discovery efforts.

Head and neck cancer, including oral cancer, is the sixth most common cancer in humans worldwide. More than 90% of oral cancers are of squamous cell carcinoma type. Recent studies have shown a strong relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and head and neck cancer, especially oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Moreover, the incidence of HPV-related OSCC appears to be on the rise while HPV-unrelated OSCC tends to have stabilized in the past decades. p16, a tumor suppressor gene, normally functions as a regulator of the cell cycle. Upon infection with high-risk types of HPV (HR-HPV), particularly types 16, 18, 31, 33, 34, 35, 39, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, and 70, the expression of p16 is aberrantly overexpressed. Therefore, the expression of p16 is widely used as a surrogate marker for HPV infection in head and neck cancer.

The age related changes in the life cycle of the progenitor cell population of murine oral epithelia was studied. Using radioautographic methods which have been adopted in previous cell cycle studies, the age-related changes of different phases in renewing cells of the palatal, buccal and lingual mucosae were determined. The results confirm published findings on cell cycle changes of epithelia with aging and illustrated further that mitotic phase which has hither to been considered stationary, also changes with aging. The major parts revealed by this study are as follows: 1) The basal progenitor cells in different regions of oral mucosa have different generation times. 2) The basal cell cycle time increases as a function of aging and the region most affected by aging appears to be the epithelium of the cheek. 3) The phases of the cell cycle affected by the process of aging are in increasing order of magnitude: M-, S- and G₁-phase. 4) The age elated change in the number of DNA synthesizing basal progenitor cells occurs at two age periods. Between 1 and 12 months of life it decreases, while from 12 to 20 months it increases.

Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare salivary gland carcinoma, usually being found in the parotid gland and is uncommon in the other major and minor salivary glands. The tumor cells consist of either serous or mucous acinar cells with few ductal or myoepithelial cell elements. The tumor is a low-grade malignancy with slow growth potential. Surgical therapy depends on tumor size and the extent of infiltration into neighboring tissues. Superficial parotidectomy or total parotidectomy is the initial method of therapy in case of acinic cell carcinoma on parotid gland. When regional neck lymph nodes are involved, the operation is combined with a neck dissection, or with radiation therapy. In the short follow up period, acinic cell carcinoma has good prognosis with 5 year survival rate after surgery is over 80%. In the long-term follow-up, however, there is a tendency to increase in recurrence or metastasis. We experienced a case of acinic cell carcinoma of parotid gland in a 57-year-old female, so we report it with literatures review.
