PURPOSES: The liquid-type chemical warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additive has been developed. This study evaluates the basic properties of the additive and the mechanical properties of WMA asphalt and mixture manufactured by using the newly developed chemical additive. METHODS: First, the newly developed WMA additive was applied to the original asphalt by various composition of additive components and dosage ratio of additive. These WMA asphalt binders were evaluated in terms of penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, and PG grade. Based on the binder test results, one best candidate was chosen to apply to the mixture and then the mechanical properties of WMA mixture were evaluated for moisture susceptibility, dynamic modulus, and rutting and fatigue resistance. RESULTS : According to the binder test, WMA asphalt binders showed the similar properties to the original asphalt binder except the penetraion index of WMA additive was a little higher than original binder. From the Superpave mix design, the optimum asphalt content and volumetric properties of WMA mixture were almost the same with those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture even though the production and compaction temperatures were $30^{\circ}C$ lower for the WMA mixture. From the first set of performance evaluation, it was found that the WMA mixture would have some problem in moisture susceptibility. The additive was modified to improve the resistance to moisture and the second set of performance evaluation showed that the WMA mixture with modified chemical additive would have the similar performance to HMA mixture. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the various laboratory tests, it was concluded that the newly developed chemical WMA additve could be successfully used to produce the WMA mixture with the comparable performance to the HMA mixture. These laboratory evaluations should be confirmed by applying this additive to the field and monitoring the long-term performance of the pavement, which are scheduled in the near future.

This investigation aims at the optimum mixing of flexible flowable-fill made of Bottom-ash as an industrial waste. Flowable-fill refer to self-compacted, cementitious material used primarily as a backfill in lieu of compacted fill. The two primary advantages of flowable fill over traditional methods are its ease of placement and the elimination of settlement. Therefore, in difficult compaction areas or areas where settlement is a concern, flowable fill should be considered. This study compares Bottom-ash with fine aggregate in physical character. The mixing design indicates a various mixing-rate.

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum length distribution of hybrid PVA(Poly vinyl alcohol) fiber. To produce blended PVA fiber length, first the length distribution of PVA fiber in the cement composites were identified in an experimental study based on simplex lattice design. Among the different length distributions investigated, fiber length was found to have statistically significant effect on plastic shrinkage cracking of cement composites. Subsequently, Complex analysis techniques were used to devise an experimental program that helped determine the optimum combinations of the selected fiber length distribution based on plastic shrinkage crack. The optimum blended PVA length ratio was 0.0146% 4mm fiber, 0.0060% 6-mm fiber, 0.0285% 8-mm fiber, and 0.0209% 12-mm fiber.
A composite of TiB2-Al2O3 system was successfully prepared from a mixture of TiO2, B2O3, and Al by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) with a novel characteristic, utilizing the internal oxidation heat of aluminium metal of the mixture, instead of by a conventional technique, externally heating a mixture of Ti, B and Al2O3. From a mixture with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0, pure two phases of TiB2 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 with good crystallinity and small, uniform sizes were formed. However, when the B/Ti molar ratio of the mixture goes to a value less than 2.0, in addition to the above main minerals, a small smounts of metastable phases such as TiB and Ti3B4 were formed. It was found that about 60%, the optimum green density of compacts gave their highest reaction rate and temperature during SHS process. TiB2-Al2O3 system composite with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0 could be pressurelessly sintered even at 190$0^{\circ}C$ under Ar gas flows without any addition of sintering aids, showing their good properties such as 91.2% in relative density, 2750 kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in Vickers hardness and 2620 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in flexural strength.

To investigate only the effects of the stratified mixture distribution on initial flame propagation and combustion characteristics, the instantaneous equivalence ratio in the spark plug gap and combustion pressure were measured simultaneously In a constant volume chamber, To induce the stratified propane-air mixture distribution near the spark plug, counter-flow typed mixture injection system was used under the constant mean equivalence ratio $\Phi$$\_$mean/= 1.0 The instantaneous equivalence ratio was measured by a single-shot Raman scattering with narrow-band KrF excimer laser. The measuring error was within the limit of $\pm$ 3.5% provided that the proposed method was applied to the measured Raman signals. Judging from mass fraction burned derived from the measured pressure, the optimum combustion characteristics were shown under the condition that the local equivalence ratio in the spark plug was near 1.28$\pm$0.04, and these characteristics were more remarkable at the initial stage of combustion.

This study was performend to examine Poisson's ration of polymer-modified asphalt concrete due to temperature variatino . Asphalt binder used in this study was an AC85-100, penetration grade of 85-100, and polymer for modifying asphalt were domestic LDPE(Low-density polyethylene) and SBS(Styrene-butadiene-styrene). Aggregate was a crushed gneiss which was most widely used in the middle part of Korea. Using these materias, asphalt mixture slab(340mm$\times$240mm$\times$80mm) with optimum asphalt content from mix design was made and cut into square pillar (80mm$\times$80mm$\times$160mm). Poisson's ration was measured in various temperture (-15$^{\circ}C$, -1$0^{\circ}C$, -5$^{\circ}C$,$0^{\circ}C$,5$^{\circ}C$,1$0^{\circ}C$ and 2$0^{\circ}C$) under the load of one axis repeated compression mode. Poisson's ration of normal asphalt polymer modified asphalt mixtures in normal temperatures. This indicated that AP mixture was more susceptible to temperature effects. From regression aalysis of experimental results, the difference of Poisson's ration between normal and low temperature showed that polymer modified asphalt mixture were lower than AP mixture except for SBS modified asplat mixture.
A study was conducted in order to remove Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) from granular plastic mixture by using Air Table. The motion of plastic particle on Air Table was investigated, and separation test on the plastic mixture with the mixing ratio of PVC 10% and PE 90% was conducted. At the optimum condition obtained from this study, that is frequency of 9.2Hz, air velocity of 1.05 m/sec, End-slope of $7.5 ^{\circ}$, Side-slope of $1^{\circ}$, Feeding speed of 450 g/min, etc., we could separate the PE-PVC mixture to PE (99.96% grade and 98.9% yield) and PVC (88.7% grade and 99.6% yield).
This paper presents an optimum mixture design method for proportioning a concrete. In the proposed method, the search space is constrained as the domain defined by the minimal convex region of a database, instead of the available range of each component and the ratio composed of several components. The model for defining the search space which is expressed by the effective region is proposed. The effective region model evaluates whether a mix-proportion is effective on processing for optimization, yielding highly reliable results. Three concepts are adopted to realize the proposed methodology: A genetic algorithm for the optimization; an artificial neural network for predicting material properties; and a convex hull for evaluating the effective region. And then, it was applied to an optimization problem wherein the minimum cost should be obtained under a given strength requirement. Experimental test results show that the mix-proportion obtained from the proposed methodology using convex hulls is found to be more accurate and feasible than that obtained from a general optimum technique that does not consider this aspect.

Response surface methodology (RSM) is frequently used for optimization studies. In the present work, RSM was used to determine the antimicrobial activitiesof grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) and a lactic acid mixture (LA) against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. A central composite design was used to investigate the effects of independent variables on dependent parameters. One set of antimicrobial preparations included mixtures of 1% (w/w) GFSE and 10% (w/w) LA, in which the relative proportions of component antimicrobials varied between 0 and 100%. In further experiments, the relative proportions were between 20% and 100%. Antimicrobial effects against various microorganisms were mathematically encoded for analysis. The codes are given in parentheses after the bacterial names, and were S. aureus ($Y_1$), B. cereus ($Y_2$), E. coli ($Y_3$), S. typhimurium ($Y_4$), P. fluorescens ($Y_5$), and V. parahaemolyticus ($Y_6$). The optimum antimicrobial activity of the 1% (w/w) GFSE:10% (w/w) LA mixture against each microorganism was obtained by superimposing contour plots ofantimicrobial activities on measures of response obtained under various conditions. The optimum rangesfor maximum antimicrobial activity of a mixture with a ratio of 1:10 (by weight) GFSE and LA were 35.73:64.27 and 56.58:43.42 (v/v), and the optimum mixture ratio was 51.70-100%. Under the tested conditions (a ratio of 1% [w/w] GFSE to 10% [w/w] LA of 40:60, and a concentration of 1% [w/w] GFSE and 10% [w/w] LA, 70% of the highest value tested), and within optimum antimicrobial activity ranges, the antimicrobial activities of the 1% (w/w) GFSE:10% (w/w) LA mixture against S. aureus ($Y_1$), B. cereus ($Y_2$), E. coli ($Y_3$), S. typhimurium ($Y_4$), P. fluorescens ($Y_5$), and V. parahaemolyticus ($Y_6$) were 24.55, 25.22, 20.20, 22.49, 23.89, and 28.04 mm, respectively. The predicted values at optimum conditions were similar to experimental values.

An Eulerian-Lagrangian method is employed to simulate the ignition process and the flame propagation through the air/fuel spray mixture in a closed constant-volume combustor. The spray mixture is ignited by providing a hot wall at the end of the combustor or by firing the electric spark. The investigated parameters involve the initial droplet size, overall equivalence ratio, initial fuel vapor concentration, distance between the hot wall and the nearest droplet, and the ignition energy. Numerical results clearly show the existence of the optimum spray condition for minimizing the ignition energy and the ignition delay time as well as the critical dependence of ignition upon the distance of the heat source to the nearest droplet.
