  • This study focused on microwave irradiation of dough, raising its temperature to monitor potential variations of dough properties and bread quality, and examined the optimum mixture ratio towards streamlining the bread-making process. According to comparison and analysis on dough properties and bread quality depending on mixture materials, it was found that Salt 2 had the highest dough temperature of all, and Salt 1 had the highest fermentation rate and specific volume but the lowest hardness (i.e. highest softness). Results of sensory evaluation, were that Salt 1.5 scored highest points in sweet taste, aftertaste, and overall acceptance, but there were significant differences among bread samples. Likewise, it was found that Fat 6 had the highest dough temperature, fermentation rate and specific volume of all. Texture analysis, showed that Fat 0 had the highest hardness of all. According to sensory characteristics, Fat 3 scored the highest points in overall acceptance. Based on these results, the optimum mixture ratio of salt and fat for microwave-irradiated bread was found to be 1.5% salt and 3% fat.

  • This study aimed to investigate the engineering properties and mechanical behaviors of polymer-fibers treated sand. Para rubber (PR), natural fiber (NF), and geosynthetic fiber (GF) were used to reinforce poorly graded sand. A series of unconfined compressive and splitting tensile strength tests were performed to analyze the engineering behaviors and strength enhancement mechanism. The experiment results indicated that the PR-fibers mixture could firmly enhance the strength properties of sand. The stress-strain characteristics and failure patterns have been changed due to the increase of PR and fibers content. The presence of PR and fibers strengthened the sand and enhanced the stiffness and ductility behavior of the mixture. The stiffness of reinforced sand reaches an optimum state when both NF and GF are 0.5%, while the optimum PR contents are 20% and 22.5% for the mixture with NF and GF, respectively. An addition of PR and fiber into sand contributed to increasing interlocking zone and bonding of PR-sand interfacial.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of improvement in fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete mixture using the industrial waste material of K fiber. In this research, as an experimental equipment, the MTS with Closed-Loop Servohydraulic System was used and it was designed according to the U.S. standard testing procedure of ASTM D 4123. According to the test results, the optimum content of fiber with the length of 8mm was about 0.2 percent of total mixture weight. The optimum asphalt content for the fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete was about 5.5 percent of total mixture weight. Fatigue resistance of fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete was noticeable compared to the conventional dense-graded 20 asphalt concrete. In addition, the resilient moduli of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture were $1.15{\sim}1.18$ times higher than those of conventional asphalt concrete.

  • Recently, Plasma display panel(PDP) has been in the spotlight as one of the next generation flat-panel-display device. The luminance and luminous efficiency improvement is the hot issues for making a plasma display into a large flat panel device. In this paper, We suggest a new penning gas mixture, in order to find the optimum mixture gas in plasma display panel. The optimum gas composition has been found by the partial pressure of inert gases(such as Af and Kr added to matrix of He(70%)-Ne(27%)Xe(3%) and Ne(96%)-Xe(4%)). The influences of Ar or Kr addition to Ne(96%)-Xe(4%) and He(70%)-Ne(27%)-Xe(3%) mixture gases are experimentally investigated for AC Plasma Display Panel. When rare As(0.01%-0.03%) or Kr(0.01%-0.03%) is added Ne-Xe and He-Ne-Xe mixture gases, the luminance increases over 10%-20% and luminous efficiency increases over 10%-20% at 200 Torr. It is sure that luminance and efficiency are improved by Penning effect. Also, This influence of Penning effect is shown by increased wall charge(10%-25%). In addition to the result, firing voltage and minimum sustain voltage was approximately decreased by 2V-3V.

  • This study presents prediction of maximum fly ash conveying capacity of fly ash system in a power plant. The mixture ratio and pressure drop characteristics of air-fly ash flow in piping system are not well understood due to the complexity of particle motion mechanism. In this paper, the researcher investigated the optimum mixture ratio when the pressure drop of fly ash conveying system is equal to maximum static pressure of displacement fly ash transport blower and the capacity of fly ash transport according to the optimum mixture ratio by experimenting the fly ash conveying system of domestic D coal thermal power plants, which is currently in operation. The experiment results showed that the maximum fly ash conveying capacity of fly ash system were founded under the condition of maximum air volume 5,040 m3/h, static pressure of trip condition 1,163 mmH2O. In addition, it was predicted maximum mixture ratio of the air-fly ash was 8.66 and maximum capacity of fly ash conveying was 52,600 kg/h under these conditions.

  • As the weight of trucks increases, the need for concrete pavement also increases. Therefore, the addition of fly-ash may improve the properties of pavement concrete as well as recycle fly-ash. A full factorial experiment was performed using the primary variables, such as water-cement ratio, fly-ash substitution ratio, and maximum size of coarse aggregate, as a preliminary study for optimum mixture design for pavement concrete. The results of preliminary study indicates that the addition of fly-ash is the most important factor determining concrete strength, followed by the maximum size of coarse aggregate and water-cement ratio. It, also, shows the relative importance of fly-ash substitution ratio, compared to the water-cement ratio, and the interaction effects between the primary variables. Optimum mixture designs for pavement concrete incorporating fly-ash, that satisfied the target responses, were proposed in terms of fly-ash substitution ratio, water cement ratio and maximum size of coarse aggregate.

  • Simultaneous isomerisation and fermentation (SIF) of xylose and simultaneous isomerisation and cofermentation (SICF) of glucose-xylose mixture was carried out by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the presence of a compatible xylose isomerase. The enzyme converted xylose to xylulose and S. cerevisiae fermented xylulose, along with glucose, to ethanol at pH 5.0 and $30^{\circ}C$. This compatible xylose isomerase from Candida boidinii, having an optimum pH and temperature range of 4.5-5.0 and $30-35^{\circ}C$ respectively, was partially purified and immobilized on an inexpensive, inert and easily available support, hen egg shell. An immobilized xylose isomerase loading of 4.5 IU/(g initial xylose) was optimum for SIF of xylose as well as SICF of glucose-xylose mixture to ethanol by S. cerevisiae. The SICF of 30 g/L glucose and 70 g xylose/L gave an ethanol concentration of 22.3 g/L with yield of 0.36 g/(g sugar consumed) and xylose conversion efficiency of $42.8\%$.

  • The objective of this study was to manufacture three kinds of domestic sweet potato Makgeolli using a mixture design and an optimization technique. The effects of four different manufacture methods, such as simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) with or without malt and separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) with or without malt were determined. The SSF methods of Makgeolli produced higher alcohol content than that of SHF methods. The sensory score was not influenced by different making methods. Fourteen experimental points were selected, and rice (10~50%), sweet potato (10~50%) and water (40~60%) were chosen as independent variables. The measured responses were sensory preference, total polyphenol content, and DPPH radical scavenging activities. The ratio of the optimum sweet potato Makgeolli mixture formulation was developed as 15.11 (rice): 44.89 (sweet potato): 40 (water) using the optimization technique. The desirability of the optimum mixture formulation was 0.839. Yellow sweet potato Makgeolli using the optimum mixture formulation produced higher soluble sugar content compared to others. Regular sweet potato Makgeolli produced higher pH. The purple sweet potato Makgeolli's total polyphenol content and DPPH radical scavenging activity were measured to be the highest at $771.91{\pm}1.42mg\;GAE/{\ell}$, $131.55{\pm}4.03%$.

  • A control of chloride diffusion coefficient is very essential for service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to chloride attack so that much studies have been focused on this work. The purpose of this study is to derive the intended diffusion coefficient which satisfies intended service life and propose a technique for optimum concrete mixture through genetic algorithm(GA). For this study, 30 data with mixture proportions and related diffusion coefficients are analyzed. Utilizing 27 data, fitness function for diffusion coefficient is obtained with variables of water to binder ratio(W/B), weight of cement, mineral admixture(slag, flay ash, and silica fume), sand, and coarse aggregate. 3 data are used for verification of the results from GA. Average error from fitness function is observed to 18.7% for 27 data for diffusion coefficient with 16.0% of coefficient of variance. For the verification using 3 data, a range of error for mixture proportions through GA is evaluated to 0.3~9.3% in 3 given diffusion coefficients. Assuming the durability design parameters like intended service life, cover depth, surface chloride content, and replacement ratio of mineral admixture, target diffusion coefficient, where exterior conditions like relative humidity(R.H.) and temperature, is derived and optimum design mixtures for concrete are proposed. In this paper, applicability of GA is attempted for durability mixture design and the proposed technique would be improved with enhancement of comprehensive data set including wider range of diffusion coefficients.
