  • The flange hub is a main component of an automotive steering system. Dimensional precision of the flange hub is very important for precise control of the steering force. Consequently, the process design for precision forming of a flange hub is required. The teeth of the flange hub are generally formed by bending. In this study, the formability of flange bending was investigated using FE simulations. For the optimum process conditions, the flange is bent by movement of an insert die, and the die angle and bending length are selected as $90^{\circ}$ and 4mm respectively.

  • When investigating optimum design of the evaporator in the refrigeration and heat pump systems, there is still lack of data for the dynamic characteristics of the evaporator, This is due to the fact that the static characteristics in the evaporator are absolutely difficult to measure and are burdened with uncertainties. In this study, the simulation works for static characteristics in the evaporator of small air conditioner are carried out to obtain the data of dynamic characteristics. In the simulation, the test evaporator is divided by two-phase evaporating region and single-phase heating region. The major parameters are refrigerant flow rate, heat transfer coefficient of air, air velocity and air temperature. The results show that the calculation method for tube length is an easy-to-use to model analysis of static characteristics and to determine state of refrigerant in the evaporator. The effects of the four parameters on the length of evaporating completed point and heat flow rate to the evaporator are clarified.

  • A simplified resistor network model for electrical and mass transport in anode-supported planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was constructed in order to investigate the effect of interconnect rib geometry on the cell performance. For accurate potential calculation, activation and concentration over-potentials at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces were fully considered in this calculation. When contact resistance was not considered, the optimum interconnect rib length were calculated to be $0.1{\sim}0.2$ mm for 2 mm half unit cell for given operation conditions and properties. However, with realistic contact resistance, the interconnect rib length should be increased to provide larger contact area and thus to obtain better performance.

  • The computer program for the prediction of the volumetric efficiency of 4-cycle single cylinder diesel engine was developed using the characteristic method which considers the effects of friction, heat transfer and specific heat. The results of calculation by this program are as follows; 1. The back flowing was arised at the beginning and the closing stage of inlet valve, and the back flowing mass and velocity decrease as the engine speed increases. 2. The volumetric efficiency varies with the engine speed and the length of inlet manifold. There was an optimum length of inlet manifold for each specified engine speed. 3. The pressure fluctuation and friction effect in the inlet manifold became very important factors for the determination of the volumetric efficiency.

  • An experimental study was made to elucidate critical heat flux(CHF) characteristics in a two-phase concentric-tube thermosyphon. The experiment was performed by using saturated water, over the experimental range of configuration: inner diameter of heated outer tube D=12mm, outer diameter of unheated inner tube do=3 to 10mm and heated tube length L=100 to 1000mm. The experiment shows that the CHF is enhanced with increase in the inner tube diameter, and that the CHF decreases beyond a certain diameter of the inner tube. There is an optimum diameter for inner tube that maximizes the CHF, for each tube length and test liquid. The CHF maximum is about two to eight times as large as that without an inner tube. For a large inner tube, the CHF characteristics is similar to that for natural convective boiling in a vertical annular tube.

  • Thermal performance of a thermosiphon for medium-temperature solar thermal application was investigated. The working fluid was Dowtherm A and the container was made of STS 316L. The thermosiphon had a outer diameter of 12.7 mm and a total length of 2 m, where the evaporator and the condenser had the same length of 0.3 m and the adiabatic section was 1.4 m. Both the evaporator and the condenser were aligned horizontal with an elevation difference of 0.18 m to utilize the gravitational force for the working-fluid return. The optimum fill charge ratio of the working fluid was investigated to obtain the maximum heat transport with the lowest thermal resistance. The maximun input thermal load was 500 W and thermal resistance was $0.60^{\circ}C/W$.

Rational designing of double-sided nail plate joints using the finite element method

  • Double-sided punched metal plate timber fasteners present projections on both sides, which offer improved joint fire resistance and better joint aesthetics. In this paper, 3-D nonlinear finite element models were developed to simulate double-sided nail plate fastener timber joints. The models, incorporating orthotropic elasticity, Hill's yield criterion and elasto-plasticity and contact algorithms, are capable of simulating complex contact between the tooth and the timber and between the base plate and the timber in a fastener. Using validated models, parametric studies of the double-sided nail plate joints was undertaken to cover the tooth length and the tooth width. Optimal configuration was assumed to have been attained when increase in nail plate tooth width did not result in a raise in joint capacity, in conjunction with the optimum tooth length. This paper presents the first attempt to model and optimise tooth profile of double-sided nail plate fastener timber joints, which offers rational designs of such fasteners.

  • Coal gasification fuel has generally a lower calorific values than natural gas and also contains ammonia which is a main source of fuel NOx. Such a fuel is in need of the advanced technologies for the NOx reduction with higher combustion efficiency. Therefore fuel staged combustion was investigated for the fuel NOx control using a bench scale gas combustoi for the fuel NOx control. Parametric screening studies were performed with the variation of air ratio, retention length and reburning fuel. The NOx reduction efficiency was increased with an increase of total air ratio having optimum reburning air ratio differently, The Increased retention length of the reburning zone was preferable for NOx reduction. Hydrocarbonic reburning fuels like propane and butane were more effective for the NOx reduction efficiency than hydrogen fuel. The NOx concentration at exit was linearly increased according to the fuel-N the fuel.

  • Characteristic properties of fluorescent lamps operated by capacitively-coupled external electrodes have been investigated. External electrode fluorescent lamps(EEFLs) are typically operated at low currents less than 10 mA, and high voltages of about 1.5 kV. Luminance of up to 20,000 cd/$\textrm m^2$ with efficiency of above 40 lm/W is achieved in EEFLs driven by square pulses of the frequency lower than 100 kHz. It is also found that the brightness and efficiency of external electrode fluorescent lamps depend on the electrode length whose optimum length is about 3 cm.

Interaction force analysis by peak value tracking in optical soliton transmission system (광 솔리톤 전송 시스템에 있어서 최대치 추적에 의한 상호 작용력 분석)

  • In the soliton transmission system for a long-length and high bit rate data transmission systme using the nonlinear/dispersive optical fibers, the improtant problem is the loss characteristics and is the limited transmission rate by interaction forces. In this paper, It is explained the reasons of moved time position for the soliton peak value due to interaction force sof adjacent solitons. And for the analysis of interaction force affection level in the losslessmedia, we define the percent parameter of error rate due to the interaction forces and propose the optimum time distance of adjacent solitons by peak value tracking methods. With the results, initial percent of error is approximately 50% when itme difference between adjacent solitons is 5 times of funddametnal soliton pulse width. And it is confirmed that maximum transmission length of th esolitons is approximately 38 times of fundamental soliton period, which the maximum allowable percoent of error is 50%.
