The internal flow characteristics of a gasoline direct injector have been studied to improve fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to examine the internal flow of the GDI with the purpose of designing the optimum geometry of the injector. This study tests orifice length, cone angle, swirl angle, orifice diameter and needle lift. The results show that optimum sizes of the orifice length, cone angle, swirl angle, orifice diameter and needle lift are 0.8mm, $140^{\circ},\;120^{\circ},\;80mm\;and\;70{\mu}m$, respectively. The size of the lift does not affect the formation of the air core signficantly near the tip of the needle compared to the ball-type needle. The vena contracta phenomenon near the orifice inlet can be released by smoothing the edge.
In this paper, the study of the optimum design for a geometry of the handle bar to obtain a high stiffness and light weight is investigated, using EDISON simulation program. High stiffness and weight lightening are considered as the major performance indicators of the component of the bicycle. Four design factors and three levels of the design factors are selected for the structural optimization and experiments are designed using the orthogonal array of L9 by Taguchi method. We calculated SN ratio of larger-the-better and smaller-the-better characteristics from FEA results and analysed the effects of design factors on characteristics. We choosed the optimum level of design factors based on deflection and safety factor. Comparing the results of FE analysis with converted value of predicted SN ration, we made sure for reliability of Taguchi method and FE method for structural optimization.
Optimum design of mooring dolphin is numerically investigated. Design optimization problem of mooring dolphin is first formulated. Geometry and cross sections of piles are used as design variables. Design objective is the total weight of steel piles of mooring dolphin and the constraints of stress, penetration depth, lower and upper bounds on design variables are imposed. Based on the design variable linking and fixing, several class of design variations are sought. For the numerical optimization, both PLBA( Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) program and DNCONF subroutine code in IMSL library are used. For a dolphin with 20 steel piles, vertical and inclined, optimum designs for different cases are successfully obtained, which can be applied for the mooring of a large floating structure.
The majority of fixed shading devices are installed in the exterior of a building in order to dissipate the heat absorbing from the sun and to prevent the direct sunlight. In designing external shading devices for windows, many requirements must be considered simultaneously; solar geometry, optimum energy performance, multi-purpose usage and design factors etc.. In order Lo satisfy these requirements, we suggests the folding shading device and its optimum design methodology. Also we analyzed the thermal performance using the IES_VE program according to various operating modes and compared with existing shading devices. The results show that proposed device reduce about $1.90{\sim}22.40%$ in cooling load and about $1.09{\sim}24.22%$ in heating load in comparison with existing ones.
A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil on the optimum flap height using NACA0015 Wells turbine. The five double flaps which have 0.5% chord height difference were selected. A Wavier-Stokes code, CFX-TASCflow, was used to calculate the flow field of the Wells turbine. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the 3-D numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. This paper tries to analyze the optimum double flap of Wells turbine with the numerical analysis.

In this paper, a numerical study has been carried out to investigate the influence of jet fan design variables on the performance of a jet fan. In order to achieve an optimum jet fan design and to explain the interactions between the different geometric configurations in the jet fan, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and the DOE method have been applied. Several geometric variables, i.e., hub-tip ratio, meridional shape, rotor stagger angle, number of rotor-stator blades and stator geometry, were employed to improve the performance of the jet fan. The objective functions are defined as the exit velocity and total efficiency at the operating condition. Based on the results of computational analyses, the performance of the jet fan was significantly improved. The performance degradations when the jet fan is operated in the reverse direction are also discussed.
Up to the present the study on the performance prediction of HAWT was performed mainly by assuming the axial flow. So in this paper we aimed at the fully non-axial flow of HAWT. For this purpose, we defined the wind turbine pitch angle in addition to the yaw angle to specify the arbitrary wind direction. And we adopted the Glauert method as the basic analysis method then modified this method suitably for our goal. By comparing the computational results obtained by this modified new Glauert method with the experimental results, it was proved that our method was a very efficient method. And on the basis of the reliability of this method we considered the effect of all the design parameters and presented the optimum blade geometry and the optimum operating condition to gain the best performance curve.
Pseudospectral Hartree-Fock(PSHF) gradient calculations with $6-31G^{**}$ basis set have been carried out to determine the structure of D-Asparagine molecule $(C_4N_2O_3H_8)$ with improved grids and with the BFGS method. The modified PSHF method, despite partial optimization of the gradient code, turned out to be still faster than the conventional ab initio method, GAUSSIAN 90 program by more than twice. The optimum geometry of D-Asparagine obtained by the PSHF method is in good agreement with those calculated by the GAUSSIAN 90 program (within 0.0036 ${\AA}$ for bond lengths, 0.8 degrees for bond angles, and 1.6 degrees for torsional angles) except for three torsional angles. Here, rather large discrepancy of these three torsional angles (5-6 degrees) is attributed to the small differences in the optimum bond lengths and angles between the PSHF and GAUSSIAN 90 calculations.
Composite steel-concrete box girders are frequently used in bridge construction for their economic and structural advantages. An integrated metaheuristic based optimization procedure is proposed for discrete size optimization of straight multi-span steel box girders with the objective of minimizing the self-weight of girder. The metaheuristic algorithm of choice is the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm. The optimum design of a box girder is characterized by geometry, serviceability and ultimate limit states specified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Size optimization of a practical design example investigates the efficiency of this optimization approach and leads to around 15% of saving in material.
For an accurate and efficient time-dependent Monte Carlo (TDMC) neutron transport analysis, several advanced methods are newly developed and implemented in the Seoul National University Monte Carlo code, McCARD. For an efficient control of the neutron population, a dynamic weight window method is devised to adjust the weight bounds of the implicit capture in the time bin-by-bin TDMC simulations. A moving geometry module is developed to model a continuous insertion or withdrawal of a control rod. Especially, the history-based batch method for the TDMC calculations is developed to predict the unbiased variance of a bin-wise mean estimate. The developed methods are verified for three-dimensional problems in the C5G7-TD benchmark, showing good agreements with results from a deterministic neutron transport analysis code, nTRACER, within the statistical uncertainty bounds. In addition, the TDMC analysis capability implemented in McCARD is demonstrated to search the optimum detector positions for the pulsed-neutron-source experiments in the Kyoto University Critical Assembly and AGN201K.
