  • The aim of stereotactic radiosurgery(SRS) is to deliver a high dose to a target region and a low dose to critical organ through only one or a few irradiation. To satisfy this aim, optimized irradiating conditions must be searched in the planning. Thus, many mathematical methods such as gradient method, simulated annealing and genetic algorithm had been proposed to find out the conditions automatically. There were some limitations using these methods: the long calculation time, and the difficulty of unique solution due to the different shape of tumor. In this study, optimization protocol using ideal models and data base was proposed. Proposed optimization protocol constitutes two steps. First step was a preliminary work. Some possible ideal geometry shapes, such as sphere, cylinder, cone shape or the combination, were assumed to approximate the real tumor shapes. Optimum variables such as isocenter position or collimator size, were determined so that the high dose region could be shaped to fit ideal models with the arrangement of multiple isocenter. Data base were formed with those results. Second, any shaped real targets were approximated to these models using geometry comparison. Then, optimum variables for ideal geometry were chosen from the data base predetermined, and final parameters were obtained by adjusting these data. Although the results of applying the data base to patients were not superior to the result of optimization in each case, it can be acceptable as a starting point of plan.

  • Genetic algorithm is the theory of grafting the principle of survival of the fittest in genetics on to the computer algorithm and it is used to solve the optimization problems, especially the shape and size optimization of the structure in Architectural problems. In the size optimization problem discrete variables are used, but series variables have to be used in the shape optimization problem because of the incongruenty. The purpose of this study is to obtain the optimum shape of cable domes by using the real coding genetic algorithm. Generally, the structural performance of the cable domes is influenced very sensitively by pre-stress, geometry and length of the mast because of its flexible characteristic. So, it is very important to decide the optimum shape to get maximum stiffness of cable domes. We use the model to verify the usefulness of this algorithm for shape optimization and analyze the roof system of Seoul Olympic Gymnastic Arena as analytical model of a practical structures. It is confirmed lastly that the optimum shape domes have more stiffness than initial shape ones.

  • Experiments have been performed to find an optimum filling quantity of working fluid in a heat pipe. The optimum operation has been defined to give a minimum temperature difference between evaporator and condenser. The experimental results show that there exists an optimum filling quantity which is slightly smaller than that calculated by the well known formula from the geometry of the wick. When the concaved vapor-liquid interface at the wick is taken into account to calculate the required quantity of working fluid, the computed value agrees with the experimentally determined quantity.

  • Recently many automotive parts have been made with stainless steels by deep drawing processes, But there are various problems occurred in deep drawing works of stainless steels compared with low carbon steels. For the severe deep drawing of complex cylindrical housing optimum process planning is required to eliminate intermediate annealing improve shape accuracy and maintain surface integrity without drawing defects such as tears wrinkles and scratches or galling. Therefore in this study a sample process planning of the severe of the severe deep drawing process is applied to a complex cylindrical housing needed for a 6 multi-stepped deep drawing of type STS 305 . A series of experiments are performed to investigate optimum process variables such as drawing rate radius and clearance. Through experiments the variations of the thickness strain distribution and hardness distribution in each drawing step are observed. Also the effects of other factors on formability such as drawing oil, blank holding force and die geometry are examined and discussed.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches. The optimization method is applied to Series 60 hull and KCS(KRISO 3600 TEU Container Ship). The obtained results prove that the method is appropriate for preliminary hull form design.

  • This study deals with optimum geometry design of laterally loaded piles in a Winkler's medium through the Fully Stressed Design (FSD) method. A numerical algorithm distributing the mass by means of the FSD method and updating the moment by finite elements is implemented. The FSD method is implemented here using a simple procedure to optimise the beam length using an approach based on the calculus of variations. For this aim two conditions are imposed, one transversality condition at the bottom end, and a one sided constraint for moment and mass distribution in the lower part of the beam. With this approach we derive a simple condition to optimise the beam length. Some examples referred to different fields are reported. In particular, the case of laterally loaded piles in Geotechnics is faced.

  • In order to improve leakage characteristic, angled-circumferential-groove pump seal is suggested. CFD analysis using FLUENT has been performed to predict leakage and determine an optimum slanted-groove angle $\alpha$ which yields the best leakage reduction. The optimum value of $\alpha$ ranges from $45^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ and depends on the pressure difference of seal and number of grooves for the same groove geometry. The maximum leakage reduction ratio increases as increasing the pressure difference of angled-circumferential-groove pump seal with the optimum value of $\alpha$.

  • For minimizing wall thickness thinning of circular shells, a new stamping technology, the deep draw-ing process combined with ironing is approached and investigated. The design requirements for the deep drawing shells are to keep the optimum wall thickness with max. 10 percent thickness thinning of the initial blank thickness, to make uniform thickness strain distribution for the wall of circular shell and to improve the shape accuracy for the roundness and concentricity. In order to check the validity and effectiveness of proposed work, a sample process design is applied to a circular shell needed for a 4multi-stepped deep drawing. Through experiments, the variations of the thickness strain distribution in each drawing process are observed. Also a series of experiments are performed to investigate optimum process variables such as the geometry of tooling, radius and drawing rate. In particular, the advantage of current approach with ironing is shown in contrast to the conventional deep drawing process. From the results of proposed method, the optimum value of process variables are obtained, which contribute more uniform thickness strain distribution and better quality in the drawn product.

  • Quadrupole ion trap mass analyzer with a simplified geometry, namely, the cylindrical ion trap (CIT), has been shown to be well-suited using in miniature mass spectrometry and even in mass spectrometer arrays. Computation of stability regions is of particular importance in designing and assembling an ion trap. However, solving CIT equations are rather more difficult and complex than QIT equations, so, analytical and matrix methods have been widely used to calculate the stability regions. In this article we present the results of numerical simulations of the physical properties and the fractional mass resolutions m/Δm of the confined ions in the first stability region was analyzed by the fifth order Runge-Kutta method (RKM5) at the optimum radius size for both ion traps. Because of similarity the both results, having determining the optimum radius, we can make much easier to design CIT. Also, the simulated results has been performed a high precision in the resolution of trapped ions at the optimum radius size.
